.... The Green Hornet

TV Show & Comic Books...

Site Meter

It's been 40 Television Seasons since the 1966-67 TV Show first ran! I can still remember when I first heard the 'Flight of the Bumblebee' that was the theme music of the show!

The show was inspired by the success of the Batman series. ABC brought The Green Hornet to television in the 1966-67 TV Season,  which introduced martial arts master Bruce Lee to American audiences and starred Van Williams as the Green Hornet.

Unlike the Batman show, the TV version of The Green Hornet was played straight, but it was cancelled after only one season.

However, the meteoric rise of Bruce Lee as a major cult movie star ensured continued interest in the television property. As a matter of fact, Bruce Lee's popularity in Hong Kong, where he was raised, was such that the show was marketed there as 'The Kato Show' !

The TV series displayed the Hornet's car, the 'Black Beauty', as a 1965 Chrysler Imperial customized by Dean Jeffries. I named my first bike 'The Black Beauty' as I was very enamored of the TV Show!  I later met Van Williams at a SDCC show where he was signing autographs for the NOW Green Hornet series!

It was also in 1967 that Gold Key Comics produced a  comic book series based on the TV show, which mirrored that program's short life with a brief three-issue print run, with the first issue pictured to the left!  I never met Bruce Lee, but saw a program at the LA Sci-Fi & Comic Con where his brother showed home movies of the Lee family...For those interested in Gold Key comic books, we have a few listed in our eBay Featured Store and eBay Pro Store.

Mother's Day is May 13th... Send Her A Little Love....

Like a Romance Comic!

Well... maybe NOT the too-hot-to-handle comic to the right, but how about a little tamer one! LOL !

Romance comics are a genre of American comic books that were actually more popular during the years from 1947 to 1965.

The American market for comic books, which had been increasing rapidly throughout the 1940s, was beginning to fall drastically after the end of World War II, when military contracts to provide disposable reading matter to servicemen ended.

This development left many comic creators seeking new markets. The romance comic genre was created by Joe Simon and Jack Kirby, who kicked off their title 'Young Romance' in 1947 in an effort to tap into new adult audiences. It was so successful that over the next 30 years, 200 plus issues of that flagship romance comic would be printed!

What were Romance Comics all about? Well the romance comics tended to espouse traditional female gender roles and values of marriage. Of course this was due in part to the fact that the comics were created almost entirely by men!

The stories in the comics dealt with a wide range of complex and mature issues of the day. The protagonist of the story was frequently but not always a middle class woman, who was grappling with power struggles in the workplace between genders, economic hardship, illegitimate children, marital infidelity, and divorce. Whew, Hot Stuff for back then!!

But then, with the implementation of the Comics Code Authority, publishers of romance comics greatly self-censored the content of their comics, which made the stories bland!

Their stories kept reiterating themes insisting that women should pursue marriage above all else...

Of course, when the sexual revolution arrived and introduced an era in which the traditional values promoted in romance comics were being questioned, then the romance comics began to fade and fade fast they did!

The remaining prominent comic book publishers, D.C. Comics, Marvel, and Charlton Comics continued to print a few romance titles into the middle 1970s, but the romance genre never regained the level of popularity it had enjoyed earlier.

It was decades before a few publishers in the 2000s began again producing romance comics. A major publisher, Dark Horse Comics, in conjunction with Harlequin (yes that Harlequin), published a new line of romance manga comics, which adapted previously published romance novels into the manga format.

In addition, the influx of manga into American brick and mortar stores has created an interest in a wider variety of the manga genre, including romance and erotica, aimed at a young female audience. Time will tell if the romance genre enjoys a new resurgence!

Edward Norton is set to play..... WHO ???
Mood:  loud
Topic: Comic Book Movies

Edward Norton...

...has been given the 'green light', (pun intended),  by Marvel Studios to play Bruce Banner in "The Incredible Hulk", the second theatrical film in the series.

This will be a  Louis Leterrier directed drama/action film and will be distributed by Universal Pictures. It has an opening set for June 13, 2008.

It may surprise many Norton fans as this is a decided return to the mainstream for him!  He has recently starred in such independent films as "Down in the Valley," "The Painted Veil," and "The Illusionist."

Norton is taking over a role played in the Ang Lee-directed "Hulk" by Eric Bana.  Many involved in the first film were disappointed that it opened strongly but didn’t fare as well as other Marvel Comics efforts, including "Spider-Man," "X-Men," "Fantastic Four" and, most recently  "Ghost Rider."

Of course, if the powers-that-are were to ask Tina or myself, we could definitely tell them why!  We saw the special film preview program at the SDCC where Ang Lee was introduced and the thousands of people in the audience were so excited to hear what he had to say on what he was going to do with the movie....

What a disappointment! The film was too high-brow at one end of the film and had way too much CGI at the other end! It was definitely not a film to sit thru the first time unless you were a Hulk fanatic, and no way would I watch it a second time on DVD!  The subject matter was definitely not for kids, so there went how many million dollars because of the word of mouth that it was too violent as well as too psycho! No way would I take my youngest son to such a movie... and yet you could find Hulk action figures to play with... create a demand and not fill it with a movie that the kids could see!

To its credit, Marvel Studios, which has a $525 million credit line through Merrill Lynch, has made "The Incredible Hulk" its second film under that arrangement and seeks to make a sequel that is less self-serious and more in line with the comic series and TV show. We shall see how true that is as the production starts...

Any of those that don't know the director's past work... Leterrier has directed the action-filled "Transporter 2," and "Unleashed." Check those out to see if we can expect more of the same !

As for the script for "The Incredible Hulk". It  was written by Zak Penn, who has had a hand in crafting two previous "X-Men" films, the "Fantastic Four" movie, and "Elektra" for Marvel. The X-Men films have been pretty good, the FF movie was better than expected, and Elektra is barely watchable... (only for Jennifer Garner!)

Until the movie comes out.... For those interested in the Incredible Hulk comic books, we have several listed in our eBay Featured Store and eBay Pro Store.

Twilight Zone...

The Twilight Zone...

...was a series of FOUR Comic Book Sets as well as a TV show!

There were two one-shot comics published by Dell Comics in their Four Color series, #1173 (May 1961) & #1288 (April 1962).

Then the Gold Key Comics comic books series was published from 1962 to circa 1982 ending with issue #92.

A now defunct company, 'Now Comics', (no pun intended), published the second volume from November 1991 to March 1993.

As a lot of comic book companies did in the 1990's, Now Comics stopped publishing the second volume, and with a new #1 issue, started volume three in May 1993 which ended with #4 in August 1993. Supposedly comic companies could sell a lot of #1 issues, so several long running comic titles were 'rebooted' this way!

Compare this with the TV show, which ran from 1959 to 1964 in its' first series with 156 different episodes.

After Rod Serling sold his shares of the Twilight Zone back to the network that originally ran them, the TV Show had its' first revival from 1985 - 1989.

Then the Twilight Zone had a 2 hour TV Movie in 1994, which did not go on to become a TV Show series.

It wasn't until 2002 that UPN had a revival of the show with Forest Whitaker as the narrator. Unfortunately that revival only ran until 2003!

For those interested in Twilight Zone Comics and other HoRRoR / MoNSTer comics, we have several hundred comic books in our eBay Featured Store and eBay Pro Store.

I Am IRON MAN....
Mood:  on fire

I AM IRON MAN...

Dum dum da da dum....        the Black Sabbath song of the same name from 1970 runs thru my mind when looking at the photo to the right.

Yes, it's one of the first photos of the now in production 'Iron Man' movie with  Robert Downey Jr (as Iron Man), Gwyneth Paltrow (as Pepper Potts), and Terrence Howard (as War Machine),  in the Jon Favreau-directed film.

This is the first film in which Marvel Entertainment provides the financing through its arrangement with Merrill Lynch, so this needs to be a blockbuster film!  It looked like a good movie script at the SDCC, but the casting so far is a little strange in my opinion!  And now it looks 'back to its' roots' for inspiration!  That's the first thing of this movie that I personally like so far !!!

As a reminder, Marvel Entertainment has recently cast Paltrow to play Virginia "Pepper" Potts, who is the personal assistant to Tony Stark, the millionaire playboy, whose alter ego is Iron Man.

Pepper Potts was first introduced in the comic book, Tales of Suspense #45 in September of 1963 !  See bottom right for comic book cover. There will have to be some changes made to Gywneth for her to look even close to how she was portrayed in the comics....

Then again, Kirsten Dunst is a blonde who plays a redhead in the Spider-Man movies, and the new female character who plays Gwen Stacy is a red-head that plays the blonde part.... So Go Figure.... That's the Magic of Hollywood !!

Gywneth starred in 'Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow', which I really enjoyed... so I am willing to give her a chance at this role in Iron Man. Just as I am more willing to give this movie a chance, with it going back to the original armor to start out with... (maybe in flashback??).

For those interested in the Invincible Iron Man comic books, we have a few listed in our eBay Featured Store and eBay Pro Store.
