Mr. Man Created by Scott Alan

It's Down To The Last 9 Days To Vote...  In the 2nd Round of the Small Press Idol 2009 contest!

And that's counting 'tonight' as a voting 'day'!

There were 27 entries that have made it out of Round 1 and are now into Round 2 of the SPI.  Why does this matter and why am I blogging about it again?   Well, in Round 2 it is not only the 3 initial Judges that are doing the voting... it is also registered persons, like YOU or me could be, that are voting in this round!

I have already blogged about a few entries in the SPI contest so far.... and there just isn't time to blog about all of them, what with all of the current projects that have come in for me to do this week and next!

However, one of the early entries that caught my eyes was that of the 'Mr. Man' comic book project. The project was submitted by Scott Alan  of Mountlake Terrace, Washington. It is now in Round 2 of the competition.

The Small Press Idol 2009 has 4 rounds:

Round 1 is already over. It was to present the Basic Concept / Talent.

Round 2 ends on April 30th. It is more about showcasing the characters with illos and background text. Only 20 contestants move on to the next round...

Round 3 goes from May 18th - June 7th.  It is on the 'sequential primers'.

Round 4 goes from July 15 - ??? It is the Origin or the #0 issue.

Below is the Basic Concept shown in Round 1 from the 'Mr. Man' Comic Book project:

Jim Dandy is an out of work actor in a failing economy who has one last chance to make it, an audition for a tv series based on the popular comic book hero Mr. MAN. Despite Jim’s thorough preparation for the role he fails the audition. This sinks him into a deep depression which is compounded by a blow to the head that causes Jim to suffer amnesia. Still looking just like the hero Mr. MAN, events lead Jim to believe that he IS this hero allowing him to perform super human feats. Now Jim struggles with his new identity, trying live up to the legend of Mr. MAN and learn what it really means to be a hero as the city begins a trend of costumed villains and oddball criminals looking to take him down.

Taking it’s roots from the days when comics weren’t so dark and broody and had no fear of having fun with the characters and stories, Mr. MAN is the tale of mind over matter, the faith of a child, and a hilarious look at modern life through the eyes of a man who would be a hero … if he could only get his mind on task.

Round 2 shows the characters from 'Mr. Man'.  He is shown at the top of this blog post, along with a character outline / bio. The other characters are shown at the web site.

For more on 'Mr. Man' I invite you to check out his entry on the Small Idol Press web site.   After viewing his progress so far, and liking it, Scott would definitely appreciate your vote!  If you are not yet signed up to vote at the Small Press Idol 2009, feel free to do so!

If you have signed up to vote at Small Press Idol, you can vote for 'Mr. Man' at:  http://www.dimestoreproductions.com/forum-t34874.html

Bongo Comics Has a 2009 FCBD Comic!

May 2nd 2009 Is FCBD!

That's The Acronym For

"Free Comic Book Day"!

Oh, And Tell 'Em Wolverine Sent You!

Okay Folks, it's almost here!  That's right, because on Saturday May 2nd - 2009, many local comic book stores, (LCBS), across the USA will participate in the Eighth Annual Free Comic Book Day (FCBD) !

So what does that mean to You??!!  Well, it could mean that you go to a participating comic book store, where you get can free comic books, possibly including the Bongo Comics FCBD comic book shown above!

It could be that simple!  Of course each privately owned LCBS has the right to put its' own limit(s) on how many free comics that it will distribute. (Because it does cost each store owner money to purchase the FCBD comics to distribute for free.) Some stores will only have some, but not all of the many FCBD comics that have printed for this special day.

When I say that, I mean that All of the major publishers and a lot of the smaller ones have printed special edition comics designed to hand out for free at those stores.

Some of the publishers printed 'samplers' of their whole line.  Others figured that printing 'prequels' to their major upcoming events in the regular series could entice you to join them for that story arc.  Yet others are free issues of a regular ongoing unlimited series so that you can get a 'feel' of what the comic book is about.

Whatever the publishers' reasons they have elected to print a comic book for FCBD, it’s a chance for YOU to try something out something new, whether you read comics every week or if you’ve never picked one up until this May 2nd!

And for You Comic Book Fans... It's a perfect day for you to take a friend to a LCBS after viewing the new 'Wolverine' movie that opens the day before on May 1st.  What could be better than that to introduce your friend(s) to Comics on Film and in Print?!

By the way, in the video above at the top right of this blog post, it is Hugh Jackman, star of "X-Men Origins: Wolverine" who talks about Free Comic Book Day, and the importance of comics in fighting illiteracy at the beginning of the video.

Of course since this is a tie-in weekend, the FCBD plug is followed by a theatrical trailer for the "X-Men Origins: Wolverine" film. But what the heck, both of those clips are good viewing!  Just ask my wife who is a big Hugh Jackman fan, LOL!   (Video used by permission. Copyright 2009, 20th Century Fox, All Rights Reserved.)

Click Here to see our Reviews on Comics, TPBs, Graphic Novels, & DVDs!  And as a Special Bonus for reading this far into the blog post, I'll let you in on a special "Plus" if you are in the Idaho Falls, Idaho area!  My Facebook Friend, Comic Book Creator / Writer Valerie Finnigan, says she will be.... "Participating in the Free Comic Book Day with a signing at Outland Comics in the Teton Village Shopping Center, Idaho Falls".  She will also be discussing her upcoming projects with Outland Comics while signing.   Details of this  event as shown below :

Date:             Saturday, May 2, 2009
Time:            11:00am - 2:00pm
Location:       Outland Comics
Street:          17th Street

City/Town:    Idaho Falls, Idaho

BTW, I'll be re-posting this blog a few more times in the near future.   If YOU are a comic book creator / writer / artist / inker/ letterer/ etc., feel free to message me of where you will be signing on this special Day!

And for those of you that are new to our blog today, we have an ongoing online 'Comic Con and Pop Culture Convention' ourselves here at "Make It So Marketing Inc.", what with our daily blog posts,  and new listings of items for sale in our online eBay Featured Store!  However due to the fact that we are online only, and not a brick & mortar store, we won't be participating in this FCBD event this year other than blogging where you can pick these FCBD comics at, and possibly see a comics creator!

Thanks again to all of YOU reading our current and archived blog posts!

Book Launch Is Today, April 21st !

Tina Lo Sasso, President Of Make It So Marketing Inc.

Guest blogger today: Tina Lo Sasso, President of Make It So Marketing Inc....

“Make It So, Number One!”

That familiar command from Captain Picard is why our company is called Make It So Marketing.

When I started the company I remembered how my former boss would often end our meetings by saying, “Make it so, Number One!” in his best Picard imitation.  (One year we all chipped in and got him a Worf stand-up to guard the entrance to his office. Okay, it was a tech magazine – some of us were a little nerdy!)

Michael takes the dreams and desires of comic book fans and “makes it so” by giving them news, reviews, and interesting stories about comics creators through his popular blog and by helping people find that sought-after collectible comic through our eBay store.

Me? I take the dreams of publishers, authors and experts and “make it so” for them by marketing their books and products.  Today I’m helping an old friend of mine, New York Times bestselling author Harry Paul, launch his latest book – “Instant Turnaround!” which he co-wrote with my new friend Ross Reck.

The book is a business parable (like “The Go-Giver” and “Who Moved My Cheese?” – one of Michael’s favorite books). It explains how to get people excited about coming to work and working hard.  A great message for managers coping in today’s tough times!

I read the book in one night and loved it.  I was delighted when I later got the chance to help Harry and Ross with their online book launch which happens today.

What’s an online book launch?

Well, here’s what we did. Harry and Ross told all their author friends (and I told a bunch of mine, like the people at Zig Ziglar’s company) about their new book. Then they asked them to give a cool free downloadable gift to people who buy the book today at Amazon.com and to tell all their readers about the book and the chance to get all the cool freebies.

Today all the friends are emailing their newsletter subscribers recommending the book and telling them to check out the gifts here:

http://www.rossreck.com/instantturnaround

The book buyers win – they get a great book and a bunch of other cool stuff that helps them do their jobs better. The friends win because more people hear about them through their free gift.  The authors win because they sell a ton of books.

I’m curious about what you think about this way of marketing.  I’ve seen it done, and done it myself, with several non-fiction books. But what do you think?  If you were a manager, would you be interested?

My bigger question is:

Do you think that an online launch could work for graphic novels or books on the comic book industry?

I look forward to your feedback!
~ Tina

Dead Duck Created by Richard Case

It's true that I've said before that each day I receive several messages...   From either contestants that are entered in the Small Press Idol 2009 contest, or from the Small Press Idol organizers themselves.

And yeah, I still don't consider them spam messages... because there's only 11 Days left for the contestants to get the votes in for their projects!!!

There were 27 entries that have made it out of Round 1 and are now into Round 2.  Why does this matter and why am I blogging about it again?   Well, in Round 2 it is not only the 3 initial Judges that are doing the voting... it is also registered persons, like YOU or me could be, that are voting in this round!

I have already blogged about a few entries in the SPI contest so far....

Dead Duck is yet another one of the entries that has caught my eyes.  Why?  Well, because I have a fondness for Westerns both in comic book and graphic novel format! The project was submitted by Richard Case from the Muncie, Indiana area.

The Small Press Idol 2009 has 4 rounds:

Round 1 is already over. It was to present the Basic Concept / Talent.

Round 2 ends on April 30th. It is more about showcasing the characters with illos and background text.

Round 3 goes from May 18th - June 7th.  It is on the 'sequential primers'.

Round 4 goes from July 15 - ??? It is the Origin or the #0 issue.

Below is the Basic Concept shown in Round 1 from the 'Dead Duck' Comic Book project:

"The last thing that I recollect was my pulling myself out of a river just at nightfall. I had not a rag of clothing and knew nothing of my whereabouts, but all that night I traveled, cold and footsore, toward the north. At daybreak I found myself at Canyon Diablo, my destination. The first man that I met was a outlaw named William Briscoe, whom I knew very well. You can fancy his astonishment at seeing me in that condition, and my own at his asking who the devil I was.”

"'Jake Duck,' I answered; 'who should I be?'”

He stared like an owl.

"'You do look it,' he said, and I observed that he drew a little away from me. 'What's up?' he added.

I told him what had happened. He heard me through, still staring; then he said:

"'My dear fellow, if you are The Duck I ought to inform you that I buried you two months ago. I was out with a small scouting party and found your body, full of bullet-holes and newly scalped. Come to town and I'll show you your clothing and some letters that I took from your person.”

And so the Adventure Begins…

Note: This series concept is based on an excerpt from the book Present at a Hanging and Other Ghost Stories, by Ambrose Bierce, 1913. (Which is now in the public domain.)

Round 2 at their web site shows the characters from 'Dead Duck'.  The above illustration at the top left of this post is in pencilled form only at this time and is just a representation of what other pages are at the web site for viewing and reading.

For more on 'Dead Duck' I invite you to check out this entry on the Small Idol Press web site.   After viewing his progress so far, and liking it, Richard would definitely appreciate your vote!  If you are not yet signed up to vote at the Small Press Idol 2009, feel free to do so!

Really... It's True!

I Was A 'Comic Book Artist' For A Day!

Click Here to see our newly listed Comics, Books, and Graphic Novels!

I've had several of my new Facebook Friends ask me... If I was a writer or artist in the comics industry, or even a 'wannabe'.  That may be because so many persons in my Facebook Network are in or were in the industry in some capacity.

Well, the standard answer would be 'No', because I'm a collector / dealer / blogger of comics and other pop culture items!

However, for one special 'day' I was a 'comic book artist', (LOL), as seen in the above 'Certificate of Participation' from Harvey Comics, and the below reprinted blog post I previously published:

I Was A Comic Book Artist For A Day....

... back on August 21st, 1993 at the San Diego Comic Con International! (SDCC).
Of course there were about another hundred other people including two of my children, who also have the official Certificate of Participation given to would-be artists as shown above at the top of this blog post!
We each drew snowflakes on the splash page of the comic book; there were several hundred of those snowflakes on the page !
Afterwards, I looked for years for that issue with my and my kids' artwork included, but sad to say that the Crash Dummies Series lasted for only 3 Issues!!  Issue #4 was never printed.... we wuz robbed!!
Thanks for nothing Harvey Comics !! LOL

So that's my 'story' and I'm 'sticking' to it!
