Anthony D Lee

Last month I blogged about my 'joining' Anthony D Lee's... Facebook Comic Con Artist's Table during the Gala Premiere of that virtual comicon.

At the same time I signed up for a 'Free Sketch' to be drawn by Anthony as he was promoting his table at the new con.

Of course my first choice would be 'The Thing', one of the members of the Fantastic Four from Marvel Comics, if Anthony was willing to draw the character!  Note: Because of the Thing's 'rocky' body, it takes additional time to draw, and here he was going to do it for free!

Well... he was, and the above sketch is one I wanted to share with everyone here again on my Blog!  Especially since it is so cool looking to have in hand!

I am going to prize this as much as when I had Joe Sinnott sign my issue of Fantastic Four #95 with a full page panel of the Thing holding up a building on his back!  Why did I have Joe sign that issue?  Well, he once said at a panel I was atttending, that the full page panel on page 8 of that issue was his favorite inking job on the Thing over Jack Kirby's pencils!

Actually, the sketch that Anthony drew for me is just one of 21 sketches he has drawn so far for FBCC attendees that signed up at his table! It does take time to sketch these folks!

To see all the great sketches he has illustrated so far, including Spy Smasher, the Scarlet Witch, Green Lantern, Dawnstar, Wonder Woman, Dawn, Mary Jane Watson, and others... check out his table at:

http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=48365333090&ref=ts

You would have to be a Facebook member to see them though... but it would be worth joining FB and then Anthony's FBCC Table to get a great sketch emailed to you!

PLUS here's an Update since my original posting of this blog post!  Anthony was originally just sending a scan of the 'free' sketch he was drawing for those that requested them at his table.  However, due to popular demand, he is now mailing the original also, IF the requester of the sketch card pays for the shipping cost!  So that is an additional bonus from this great artist that is based in the UK!  So ask him what it would be to ship it to you if you want the original sketch card mailed to you also!  Plus check out what else Anthony is doing while you are at his FBCC artist's table!

Beware Of Golden Records Comics Reprints!

They May Look Like The Original... But They Are Not!

Click Here To See Our COMIC CON Listings of Comics, Graphic Novels, Promo Comics and other Pop Culture items listed for sale!

It's been a while since I blogged about this...   But once again someone has asked me about a comic book they have from this reprint series from 1966, thinking that it is the original issue from 1961!  They look so close to the original issues, (minus certain pages and a price on the front cover), that mainstream folks quite often are 'conned' into thinking that they have the originals!

I am re-posting the following blog from March 5th, 2007 where I went into this subject:

The above Golden Records featuring Marvel Comics characters were originally issued in 1966 with a record and a REPRINT of the issue that the character(s) were originally featured in.

Too often the comic book is found without the record, and is either believed to be the original printing or is 'passed off' as being the original to non-collectors who think they have found a 'Great Deal'.

When looking just at the cover of the comic book, when pictured in an auction listing, the one BIG thing that will differentiate the reprint from the original is that the reprint will NOT have the cover price of either 10 cents or 12 cents on it. (Please see the Fantastic Four #1 at the top left for the REPRINT copy issue.  The photo shown below that is the ORIGINAL printing. It HAS the cover price of 10 cents printed.)

The above example is just one of the pitfalls of buying online from someone who is not normally a comic book seller, as how would they know without a Comic Book Price Guide?  There have been other reprints throughout the years, but the above 'Golden Record' reprints look so close to the original until close-up inside the pages inspection, (as they also don't reprint the original ads as well as the cover price!).

As a last note, the above 'Golden Records' and the reprint comics also do have value.... just that the reprint comics don't command the full value that the originals do!  A 'Fine' 6.0 graded reprint is 'price guided' at $42 while the original in 'Fine' 6.0 grade is 'price guided' at $1,455 ! (Note: these prices were in effect at the time of this blog post's original publishing.)

So please folks, be aware that these reprint issues are out there, and end up quite often on certain auction sites for sale...  They are not worth even close to the value of the original prints!

May 2nd 2009 Is FCBD !
Mood:  d'oh
Topic: Comic Books - New

Archie Comics Has a 2009 FCBD Comic!

May 2nd 2009 Is FCBD!

That's The Acronym For

"Free Comic Book Day"!

Oh, And Tell 'Em Wolverine Sent You!

Okay Folks, it's almost here!  That's right, because on Saturday May 2nd - 2009, many local comic book stores, (LCBS), across the USA will participate in the Eighth Annual Free Comic Book Day (FCBD) !

So what does that mean to You??!!  Well, it could mean that you go to a participating comic book store, where you get can free comic books, possibly including the Archie Comics FCBD comic book shown above!

It could be that simple! Of course each privately owned LCBS has the right to put its' own limit(s) on how many free comics that it will distribute. (Because it does cost each store owner money to purchase the FCBD comics to distribute for free.) Some stores will only have some, but not all of the many FCBD comics that have printed for this special day.

When I say that, I mean that All of the major publishers and a lot of the smaller ones have printed special edition comics designed to hand out for free at those stores.

Some of the publishers printed 'samplers' of their whole line.  Others figured that printing 'prequels' to their major upcoming events in the regular series could entice you to join them for that story arc.  Yet others are free issues of a regular ongoing unlimited series so that you can get a 'feel' of what the comic book is about.

Whatever the publishers' reasons they have elected to print a comic book for FCBD, it’s a chance for YOU to try something out something new, whether you read comics every week or if you’ve never picked one up until this May 2nd!

And for You Comic Book Fans... It's a perfect day for you to take a friend to a LCBS after viewing the new 'Wolverine' movie that opens the day before on May 1st.  What could be better than that to introduce your friend(s) to Comics on Film and in Print?!

By the way, in the video above at the top right of this blog post, it is Hugh Jackman, star of "X-Men Origins: Wolverine" who talks about Free Comic Book Day, and the importance of comics in fighting illiteracy at the beginning of the video.

Of course since this is a tie-in weekend, the FCBD plug is followed by a theatrical trailer for the "X-Men Origins: Wolverine" film. But what the heck, both of those clips are good viewing!  Just ask my wife who is a big Hugh Jackman fan, LOL!   (Video used by permission. Copyright 2009, 20th Century Fox, All Rights Reserved.)

"appearing at this event at this location selling our full color comics, signing books, and drawing sketches for all local fans! Stop by and celebrate with us!".   Details of this as shown below :

Date:             Saturday, May 2, 2009
Time:            10:00am - 9:30pm
Location:       Harrison's Comics
Street:          3850 Mystic Valley Parkway
City/Town:    Medford, MA

Thanks again to all of YOU reading our current and archived blog posts!

Even More DON BLUTH Animation Tutorials Now For Sale!

Don Bluth

Now Has 3 Animation Tutorials Now Available On DVD!

Click Here to see our newly listed Comics, Books, and Graphic Novels!

I blogged a while back that Don Bluth... had a new DVD out that he was selling on eBay.

Don's name may be a familar one to you, because of his many years in the animation industry.

Starting out at Disney Studios  he was an animator on Robin Hood, The Rescuers, The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh and Pete's Dragon, among other films there.

When he left Disney in 1978 he set up his own animation studio, Don Bluth Productions.  Don has had 'hands on' experience as well as management of animation features that have grossed multi-millions of dollars in worldwide releases.

His own production company has been involved in the animation segment in Xandau, Dragon's Lair (the video game), and The Secret of NIMH, among other releases during the years.

The following is about the first of Don Bluth's Animation Tutorials that is currently for sale on eBay via his own eBay listings.

Here is a blurb from his marketing promotion:

"Have you had the thrilling experience of seeing your drawings come to life? We are not talking about mere movement here, but the thrill that comes from giving your characters “the illusion of life.” If you have not experienced this thrill, let Don Bluth be you mentor. He will show you many of his secrets that he has learned during his fifty year career as an animator/ director for both Disney and his own company. These tutorials focus on the techniques of drawing and the principles of animation, with the goal of helping you expand your skills as an animator. Don’t miss these exciting and informative sessions."

Run Time Approximately: 42 Minutes

Not Available in Stores...

Additional info on what is presented in this first DVD are:

"This animation principle is ubiquitous. It is present in all animation shots. In this lesson we will explore the nature of an object, its mass and its reaction to the gravitational pull."

And....

"Don Bluth will answer the question of what causes a bouncing ball to gradually diminish the energy of its bounce.  These simple principles of physics are then applied to character hops, and jumps, and rhythms.  Animation characters must appear to have weight."

I had the opportunity to view this DVD from start to finish myself...

I am not an animator, but enjoy reading and viewing how the comics, graphic novels, and films that I watch are created. This DVD tutorial shows Don at work explaining how certain aspects of animation are created.

Don's voice is smooth, consistent, and pleasant to hear. He takes his time to show every detail in getting each concept across to the viewer.  Additionally, the camera shows the animation being drawn by Don from both the side view, over the shoulder, and from the overhead of the drawing table itself.

This DVD is a good lesson in applying several techniques that Don illustrates in this lesson. No, you won't get all the Secrets from this Master of Animation in just this one DVD, but what is shown is clearly and succinctly illustrated for you.  This is one of what is a few DVDs in a series where Don shares his years of experience with you.

This tutorial, one on one with the viewer, could make a good start for those interested in the art of animation. Think about it for yourself or for a friend or family member who is thinking of going into the animation field!

AND NOW... You can follow up with the first DVD by checking out his two additional tutorials!  They are titled 'Getting The Feeling', and 'Nuts and Bolts'!

The eBay listing for these special tutorial DVDs from Don Bluth can be seen by clicking here

And thanks to my eBay and Facebook Friends that have already bought the first one Don had listed earlier!  For those that haven't check out all three now listed!

(Please note:  This listing is NOT one of Make It So Marketing's... it comes directly from Don Bluth's eBay enterprise.  Additional  Note: A complimentary copy of the first DVD for this mention / review was provided by the creator.)

Lee Roy Lopez

And Lee Roy Lopez is just one of several creators... That are going to be exhibiting at S.P.A.C.E. this upcoming weekend!

So for those of you that don't know what 'S.P.A.C.E.' is all about... it is the 'Small Press and Alternative Comics Expo',  which is held each year in Columbus, Ohio.  This year it is celebrating its' 10th Year!  The event is organized by Bob Corby of Back Porch Comics.

Several of my Facebook Friends have told me that it has grown in size over the years since it first started, and has become one of the best shows for finding comic book creators all in one place, without all the 'mainstream distractions' that are seen at major conventions.

Plus for those that are not comic book writers, pencillers, inkers, etc., this is the show where you will find... "the old school zinesters, mini-comic makers, and lots and lots of the up-and-coming indies, all under one roof"!

I'm centering on just one comic book creator right now for this blog post, and that is Lee Roy Lopez.

Lee Roy is currently the penciller for "Into The Dark". Here is his 'bio' in his own words:

"I've been with Speak Easy around the same time as Nathan Baker since early '08. Best group of talent ive been lucky enough to work with. This is the 2nd comic ive drawn the 1st still unpublished "Young Vindicators" with Ken Stutsman."

"Im a Muslim of Puerto Rican descent born and raised in Brooklyn, East New York but ive been living in Lakewood, Ohio for the past 5 years. You can catch my artwork on Facebook, myspace.com/lafamilialopez4 or comicspace.com/allpencils . Im looking forward to see everyone at Columbus."

Lee Roy mentions his work on "Into The Dark" which is also shown above at the top of this post.  Here are the details on this project:

Into the Dark - Ashcan edition

Created by Nathaniel Baker
Cover by Lee Roy Lopez & David Marshall
Pencils by Lee Roy Lopez
Inks by Roger Price
Written by Nathaniel Baker
Lettered by David Marshall

Welcome to Woodrow Asylum

Story One: Into the Dark

Into the Dark is a horror/suspense story that follows Kaleb Grey. Kaleb is your everyday under appreciated father, husband, fellow employee, and human being. Unbeknownst to him however he’s also something else. As the worst day plays out in front of him a minor lapse in time brings him to a room locked away from the world. What happened? How did I get here? Is this real? Am I going crazy? As Kaleb faces nightmares in every form, he must also face the truth that’s hidden somewhere deep in the darkness, maybe even his mind. So many questions, so little light...!

Thanks Lee Roy for bringing your project to my attention!  For those not able to attend the Expo, you can see more at his web site at: http://www.comicspace.com/allpencils

Besides Lee Roy Lopez attending this Expo, the following are others that will be exhibiting there.  I've added on a few more since my last blog about this show:

Marek Bennett, Doc Boucher, David Branstetter, Tim Broderick, Karen Chen, J.D. Elder, Tomm Gabbard, Howie Noeldechen, Randy Pare, Jonathan Hodges with Bad Place Productions, D Jason Meadows with Lead Slinger Studios, Bryan Borgman, Pat Lewis, Troy Boyle, and Bob Corby.

Matter of fact, Troy Boyle just messaged me that he will have an artist's table at SPACE. He's at table #49 and will be doing sketches for free plus giving away tear sheets for his two upcoming comics from Dimestore - PINNACLE, and EARTHMAN!

Others attending but I'm not sure are exhibiting are: JK Carrier, Ian Shires, Brent Erwin, Allen Freeman, Carrie Cartwright, Matt Feazell, Darrell Goza, Tim Corrigan, Bruce Rosenberger, Heather Farr, and Molly Durst.

Expo Details:

SPACE 2009 April 18 & 19, 2009 at the Aladdin Shrine Center, Columbus, Ohio

10:00 AM to 6:00 PM Saturday and
10:00 AM to 5:00 PM Sunday

Admission $5.00 for one day and $8.00 for both

For more information on this show go to:  http://www.backporchcomics.com/space.htm

(Please Note: A complimentary item for this mention was NOT provided by the artist nor the comic con!)

For those of you that are new to our blog today, we also have an ongoing 'Comic Con and Pop Culture Convention'  here at "Make It So Marketing Inc.", what with our daily blog posts,  and new listings of items for sale in our online eBay Featured Store
