TODAY'S FEATURE - Blog #3458 - Part 2 of a series on the 2011 Comic-Con International San Diego:

Yesterday, my wife Tina and I spent most of the day shopping for the upcoming Comic-Con International: San Diego.

That's right... I said shopping 'for' the Comic-Con, not shopping 'at' the con!

That's because after 11 years of attending the Comic-Con, Tina has learned to be prepared, as we arrive very early to the convention center, and don't leave the premises unless we have an 'after-con party' to attend in the evening!

So we spent the day buying multiple items at multiple stores. Being an experienced attendee at this con, (I have been attending since 1991 straight without missing a year at the convention center, and actually started attending officially back in 1972, when I bought out a comics dealer at the El Cortez site), as mentioned in blog #3450!

I ordered new walking shoes, as I have very wide feet, and don't want any problems walking the massive convention center PLUS the hotels next to the convention center that are also having 'panels' and 'programs'. Trust me... Comfortable shoes are the #1 item to bring to this convention! 

Next I purchased new blue jeans, to match my new 'ComicBookCollectorsBlog.com' Navy blue colored polo shirts that you will be seeing more of in this blog in the weeks to come! (Yeah, I still have a half-dozen of the indigo colored shirts... But those were getting a little worn, as I wear them to all of the conventions I attend, for easier recognition.)  Here's a link to Semantink's Comic Savvy in Mission Valley, San Diego, where I 'premiered' the Navy Blue polo shirts at earlier last month.) 

Tina also bought new shoes, pants, and tops for the Comic-Con.  Yes, in the past we have bought t-shirts on the exhibit floor from dealers that peddle those, but we also have to remember that we want our photos taken with certain individuals and groups while at the Comic-Con, and at any 'after con parties' we attend.  So being comfortable is the priority, but also feeling that we can fit into any crowd scene we find ourselves invited to.  There isn't a 'dress code' for most of the events. Hey's it's 'laid back San Diego' after all!

We also bought plenty of snacks, which will be lugged around the convention center in small quantities.  I say 'small quantities', as the swag we pick up on the exhibit floor, plus the comics / graphic novels / TPBs that I am given by comics creators in Artists Alley & the Small Press sections for possible review in this Blog, get very heavy after a while!

As an additional note on food... Ever since Tina came down with food poisioning at this con, we have been very careful as to what we purchase there.  She missed a whole day of the con, and after looking forward to attending all five days, that was a big disappointment for her that year!   So we stay away from non-cooked food there, (hint!).

We already bought pre-paid parking under the San Diego Convention Center three months ago, but the first day, 'Preview Night' was already reserved for those setting up at the Comic-Con. Thus we are nearby, but not where we can easily take items back to the car that night.

I also want to remember to mention that there have been quite a few mentions of the Comic-Con in this Blog since it started in 2006...!  Here's a link to all of the mentions of the SDCC during the years of this Blog and its predecessor in the eBay Blogs platform, which were copied overr!  There are several lists of what to bring in some of those also!

TODAY'S FEATURE - Blog #3457:

I do realize that this really isn't a 'comic book movie', but with a few series of comic books that have been published... I wanted to review blog it here today!

First, I'm going to say that both my wife, Tina, and I saw this film. However she is not going to separately review blog it, and I'll state why at the end of this post.

Second, for those of you that don't know what this film is about... AND don't mind a 'SPOILER WARNING' here's what the film is about, and it does go way into depth on it, but could help some to figure out what the heck is going on here, the Wikipedia entry for Transformers 3: Dark Of The Moon. 'END SPOILER WARNING'. Don't read it if you don't want full details!!

Tina and I have seen the earlier two films in this series via DVD rental with my youngest son, but it just isn't a series that makes Tina want to pay the $$ to see it at the Big Screen.  For myself, I've read  several of the Transformers comic books, (heck, I buy & sell them in my online comic book shop!), but it isn't one of my favorite series, nor is it something I would normally be waiting to see on the Big Screen, like the upcoming Captain America film!

So, you now know what the film is about, if you read the link to the wiki, and you know that Tina and I don't place this series as a 'must see' at the Big Screen...  So what did I think of this 3rd entry in the series?

I've got to admit... The marketing people for this film know their audience and how to please them!

To the left is a movie lobby display for the Transformers 3 film. Great imagery reproduced to entice those going by it to want to see it!

As for myself, I would have to say that if I was really into this film series... I would have to see this one on the Big Screen for sure!

That's because of the non-stop action scenes! Michael Bay did what he does so well, with all kinds of explosions to keep the film moving!  

The actors weren't just clay dummies either... They worked the scenes, instead of just walking through them for a third paycheck. The fact that Shia LaBeouf, Josh Duhamel, Tyrese Gibson and John Turturro returned to reprise their starring roles, along with Peter Cullen returning as the voice of Optimus Prime and Hugo Weaving returning as the voice of Megatron added continuity to the film series.  The lack of Megan Fox, who had another committment, wasn't really missed by me, as English model Rosie Huntington-Whiteley came in as a new love interest for Shia's role, and she did fine in my opinion.

For those that have seen the earlier two films in this series, it was almost like seeing old friends once again. For those coming into this 3rd film of the series, I'm sure that there was some catching up to do at the beginning of the film.

The continued story of Sam, (played by Shia), with his parents coming in to visit him, added a lot to the film for me.  The fact that their son still hadn't found a job after graduating college placed this film in the 'real world', where jobs are hard to find because of the poor economy at this time.  Some actual realism for a change, versus all of the sci-fi and action scenes.

A Big Plus for me was that the voice of Leonard Nimoy starred in this film.  It really added credence to the character of 'Sentinel Prime', who was portrayed to be much older!

Also, I do want to point out that we saw this in the regular 2D, not the Real D 3D, nor IMAX that the film could be seen in.   

However, we both found this film to be a little too long for us, not being Big Fans of the film series.  I'm sure that others that are 'into' this found it just the right length of playing time for the move! 

I give this film a FINE PLUS (F+) 6.5 out of a possible 10.0 comic book grading scale.  That's because it does have a target audience and it should play well to them... Just that I'm not that into it, and it's been a while since Transformers 2: Revenge of the Fallen in 2009, so I didn't remember everything that had gone on before!  The 1st film in the series, Transformers in 2007, was actually the most memorable of the three for me, when I think back on it... And Megan Fox was 'hot', LOL!

As for Tina's comic book grade for this film... She gives it a FINE (F) 6.0 out of the same 10.0 comic book grading scale.  Even though this isn't her fave genre of movie, and the CGI was overwhelming for her... She was a good sport in attending the film, but it did not hold her interest enough to take the time to review blog it separately, what with her busy schedule...!

Both Tina & I believe this movie is worth taking in... IF YOU are already a Fan of this movie series. Especially at a BIG SCREEN near You!   Don't wait for the release of the DVD because there are many scenes that should be seen on the BIG SCREEN!  If you aren't a Fan of the movie series already, or the comic books, or the original cartoon series... Well, it would probably be best to wait for the DVD rental!

Yeah, this is kind of a 'strange' review this morning... But I can see the 'entertainment value' of this 3rd film in the series for a Fan of the series.  Otherwise... Catch 'Super 8' which is more for a general audience. Which I reviewed blogged earlier here!

Michael D Hamersky On Comics Presents: The Second Of A Series Of Free Reports At 'Michael D Hamersky On Comics' The Facebook Fan Page!     - Photos: (Above) I had the pleasure of seeing Julie (Catwoman) Newmar again... She was pleased to see 'my' new book, and asked me how times she was mentioned in it!  LOL!  She also mentioned to me that her new book was coming out shortly, AND that all of us should buy a copy! TODAY'S FEATURE - Blog #3455:

I've mentioned before in this Blog, that I have a few pages going on at Facebook!

As well as being an 'admin' at several Fan Pages for Tina's and / or my clients, I also have a Facebook profile, group, and fan page!

That's because I maxed out my 'personal' profile page with over 5,000 Facebook Friends Plus others Fan Pages being 'Liked' back in early 2009.

So, because having a 'fan page' for myself sounded somewhat 'vain' at the time, I instead joined with the Facebook Comic Con (FBCC) folks, and started a Facebook Comic Con | Make It So Marketing group page, that is affiliated with the FBCC folks.  The 'Make It So Marketing' is the name of Tina's business.

However, I could see before the recent change on groups / group pages at Facebook, that I also needed another page, due to maxing out my 'profile' page with the 5,000 imposed limit. 

So I finally decided that it wouldn't be that 'vain' to start up a 'fan page' about what I am most involved in nowadays, and took the plunge!  Which ended up with the 'Michael D Hamersky On Comics' Facebook Fan Page, which I have been promoting a little more, what with the changes at Facebook with the group pages.

Well, last week I woke up at 1 AM with the solution to one of Tina's clients questions on how to present a 'free chapter' of their new book, as a 'gift' to 'fans' of their own author fan page at Facebook.

Here's the link to the rest of the story from the earlier blog, where I tested oout the 'Free Report' app, which has actually gone over pretty well so far to date!

So, I've talked with my Editor on the book that I submitted an essay to a while back, that was published at the end of 2010.

That book was titled 'Gotham City 14 Miles'.  Each one of the 'Milemarkers' stood for one 'essay' submitted by a different author.  So there were 14 of us in total!

So, my Editor, Jim Beard, said it would be okay to give away the first three pages from that book, which is very similar to what I did for Tina's client.

PLUS:  Today, July 6th of 2011, is the 66th Birthday of Bert Ward!   Bert is seen sitting next to Julie Newmar at the same 2011 Wizard World Anaheim Comic Con that Julie was pictured holding the book at the top of this blog post.  They were both there for the 45th Anniversary of the Batman TV show!

So lucky you, we all get to share a gift for Bert's birthday, (wink!), which is actually my 'Free Report #2', just for clicking the 'LIKE' button on my Facebook Fan Page, Michael D Hamersky On Comics!

So while 'technically' not a 'Report', it is still 'Free' and an 'Intro' to the book that contains my chapter. If you are a fan of the 1966 Batman TV Show Series... Than consider this an introduction to re-acquaint you with the series.

If you aren't that familar with the TV series, then realize that this book is not just 'fanboys' writing and salivating over the TV show.  Instead the majority of the 14 essayists included what they liked and didn't like about the show in their essays.

So I wanted to bring this to the attention of this blog's readers! Especially since the book is still not available brand new from Amazon, where usually some pages would be excerpted to show the potential buyer what the book is about.

TODAY'S FEATURE - Blog #3454:

Every 4th of July Tina and I usually go to one of the local theaters to catch a film, and one not necessarily a 'comic book movie' that we usually would blog about here!

We also usually have a home project that we will finish first, before getting cleaned up to go out...

However, this year we will be going to our church's BBQ at 1PM and then instead of seeing the film they are presenting afterwards... We will be going to see 'Super 8'.

Yeah, I didn't think it was a 'comic book movie' either, but I knew that Tina wanted to see it, especially on the 'BIG SCREEN', as the previews we saw in the theater before made it look like one that needed to be seen on the BIG SCREEN!  Plus Tina had seen a panel at the 2010 SDCC that mentioned the film...!

So, I was looking to see what times it played today, and ran across the fact that there is a 'comic book connection' to this film!

No kidding! Just like the movie that Jude Law and Gwyneth Paltrow was in back in 2004, 'Sky Captain And The World of Tomorrow'! There was a promo comic book for that also, but we saw the film and read the promo comic book before I started blogging in 2006!   However, I have mentioned that movie and promo comic book several times in the past as seen by this link!

Okay... I believe that I'm just going to post a few items on this film we are going to see later today, from others, and then come back and just give it a 'comic book grade', along with Tina, without going into a full blown review as it isn't really a 'comic book' movie! My intent is to format this blog post now, watch the film after the BBQ, and then get Tina's reaction / comic book grade on the way home, remember mine, and then post it for Tuesday, July 5th!

So what's this movie about?  Here's just part of what I found at Wikipedia.org for it:

"Super 8 is a 2011 American science fiction film written and directed by J. J. Abrams and produced by Steven Spielberg. The film stars Joel Courtney, Elle Fanning, and Kyle Chandler and was released on June 10, 2011[3][4] in conventional and IMAX theaters. The film tells the story of a group of children who are filming their own Super 8 movie when a train derails, releasing a dangerous presence into their town."  For more you can click this link, but, SPOILER WARNING!!! It goes very deeply into the whole film!  So If you don't want to know, don't read too far into the page!!

We're back... We stayed out later than we thought we would... And now it's Tuesday morning!

First, here's Tina's comments that she told me last night on the way home, with her comic book grade:

Good action sequences!

Good use of monster!

Good use of the kids in the story!

This is a 9.0 out of a 10.0 comic book grading scale, a VERY FINE / NEAR MINT (VF/NM)!

On the promo comic book... Tina thought that she shouldn't read it before going to the film, as she hates spoilers... But she read it and enjoyed what it presented.  Plus figured that it would not affect her watching the film itself. No grade was expressed on that promotional item.

Here's my thoughts:

This movie, set in the late 1970s, is like a 1950s movie updated for the 2010s! 

Yes, it was a movie that Tina first marked down as wanting to see, way back at the 2010 San Diego Comic Con International, when she first heard the mention of it during the panel.  But for her it was worth the wait!

As for myself, once I found there was a 'comic book connection', as shown at the top right of this blog, it got me off the fence to go see it! 

I give this film a NEAR MINT (NM) 9.4 out of a possible 10.0 comic book grading scale!

As for the promotional comic book, even though I only saw it online, and did not hold it in my hands like I normally read comics... I give that promo item a VERY FINE / NEAR MINT (VF/NM) 9.0 grade.  If you were lucky enough to obtain one... Keep it!

This was a great way to spend part of our 4th of July holiday!

Both Tina & I believe this movie is worth taking in... Especially at a BIG SCREEN near You!   Don't wait for the release of the DVD because there are many scenes that should be seen on the BIG SCREEN!
