TODAY'S FEATURE - Blog #3465:

This comic book was moved up in my 'To Review' stack due to the fact that I had already read and review blogged issue #1 a while back, as seen here... And that the writer of the comic book series will be at the upcoming Comic-Con International that starts later today, Wednesday the 20th, with Preview Night, from 6PM to 9PM!

Okay, back?

Well, this issue continues with an eye catching front cover.

The inside front cover is the 'credits page', which shows that the interior pages will be 'based on the works of L. Frank Baum.  Which I have to say must be pretty much right on, as Kirk Kushin was a recent attendee of the 2011 Winkie Con, the Official Wizard of OZ convention, and I don't believe they threw him out, LOL!

However, once again the first page, and the additional pages are printed in black & white, which can be a 'turn-off' for some potential readers.  For those of you that have to read your comics in color, and don't want to even peruse non-color comics... You are missing out on a good 2nd issue...

I mentioned before that I have received several Wizard of OZ comics in the fast couple of years.  This series so far ISN'T an adaptation of the series of OZ books just being rewritten into a current day 'grim and gritty' revisionist tale.

Which is just fine with me!

The main characters appear to act 'in character', although its been several years since I read most of the OZ books.

What I like besides Kirk's writing, is that the interior art is illustrated by Gonzalo Martinez which flows with the storyline and dialogue. No writer / artist conflict there.

Yes, the front color cover is painted by Sylwia Smerl, but once the cover grabs the attention of the possible reader / buyer of the comic... The interior art better deliver... This issue does!

Like I said above, its been a few years since I read the series of books, so when this issue #2 starts to introduce more of the gazillion Oz characters, I get a little lost on who is who and what they do (or did) in the book series. 

However, I'm okay with Kirk bringing in Trot, Cap'n Bill, Scraps, and the Scarecrow, even though they seem to me to be with a twist in costuming(?) by Kushin & Martinez in art style. 

What 'centered' this storyline for me, was that the story revolved (pun intended), around Dorothy's old house being converted into a museum.  Again, deja vu one more time... Another tornado whips it up into the air and off everyone goes... So it is a fun little caper, but I won't spoil it further for you!

Like issue #1, this second issue also contains a self-contained story, but I believe that Kirk is formatting it into part of a longer story arc.

It's been a while since issue #1 came out, but this issue #2 was worth waiting for!

I need to cut this review blog a little short, as although it is called 'Preview Night' at today's San Diego Comic Con... Everyone gets down there by noonish to stand in line to get in! 

So, my comic book grade for this comic book is a NEAR MINT (NM) 9.4 out of a possible 10.0 grading scale.

TODAY'S FEATURE - Blog #3463:

Last night, (July 17th), was the July 2011 meetup of Semantink's Comic Savvy at the Milano Coffee Company, in the Mission Valley area of San Diego, California.

And no, this isn't a brand new series of meetups going on in the San Diego Metro Area... Here's the link to the February 20th, 2011 Meet-Up, the April 2011 meetup , the May 2011 meetup, and the June 2011 meetup that I attended.  (I did miss the March 2011 meetup due to family members going to the hospital during that time.)

As stated in those prior blogs on this meetup... The 'official hours' of the meet-up are from 5PM to 7PM, on the 3rd Sunday of every month, but several persons, including my youngest son Vinnie, and myself  were having so much fun attending that we were there till 7:45PM last night, talking! 

I've included one photo at the top right of this post, choosing to hi-lite Nathalie Grepe, who was one of the two winners of a giveaway last night, sponsored by this Blog.  Because of the limitations of this blog format, I've built a 'special photo album' titled 'July 2011 Semantink's Comic Savvy Meet-Up' at my Facebook Fan Page for you to see all that were in attendance, if YOU weren't there!  And  please.. Feel free to 'tag' yourself if you attended this meetup!

Christopher Henderson was the 'moderator' of the meetup last night.

First came the introductions going round the tables, and how many times that person had attended the Comic-Con International: San Diego (aka San Diego Comic Con), which was one of the two questions I had in mind to ask at this meetup.  The second question I had was whether or not that person would be attending this year's Comic-Con, because it was hard to buy memberships online this year, if you hadn't been there the year before in person to buy them then!

Here in brief is what was said.  Bear in mind that those attending the meetup are persons who are likely to read comics & graphic novels, and attend comic book cons, and view comic book movies!

Christopher Henderson:  Has attended 6 or 7 times at least, and is going to 2011 SDCC.

Andrew Rakestraw:  Attended 3 times, and Yes for 2011.

Louis: 2 times & No to 2011.

Rich Kuhaupt: 12 times - hasn't missed since 2006. Yes to 2011

Kimberly Prue Paul: 3 times - and Yes to 2011.

Michael D Hamersky:  Attended straight thru since 1991 when the Comic-Con moved to the San Diego Convention Center.  Set up as comic book dealer at the El Cortez Hotel in 1972.  Yes to 2011.

Vinnie Hamersky: 3 times & No to 2011.

Matt Dunford: Attended straight thru since 1994. Yes to 2011.

Steve Hendricks: 1st time attended in 1999, and Yes to 2011.

James Ninness: 5 or 6 times. Yes to 2011.

'Siemen' (sp.) 4 or 5 times. No to 2011.

Michael Wyatt: Has not missed since 1985. Yes to 2011.

Joe: 4 times.  No to 2011.

Jose: Straight thru since 2004. No to 2011.

Tiffany Smith: 3 times. No to 2011.

Daniel Touchet: 10 times since 2006. Yes to 2011.

Luke: Attended since the 1980s. Yes to 2011, but Sunday only.

Nathalie Grepe: 2 times. Yes to 2011.

Yanglyn Ou: 2 times. Yes to 2011.

Others came in after the intros, so did not get chance to participate on this.

Other mini-discussions were brought up, and then the group got back together to share their favorite moment at the Comic-Con. Here's just a few quick topics:

Jose's favorite was seeing Hall H for the first time.

Tiffany's was seeing the Captain from Firefly.

Daniel's was seeing the Last 'Lost' Panel.

Nathalie's was a Scooby Doo panel.

Sean's was getting sketches when he was 11 or 12 years of age from creators like Todd McFarlane.

Rich's was meeting three different people, including Jim Kelly.

Kimberly's was seeing the stars from the short-lived 'Nightstalker' TV series.

Michael D Hamersky's was setting up as a dealer in 1972 at the El Cortez Hotel.

Vinnie's was having cake brought to him at an after con party by Sergio Aragones.

Matt's was being served at a restaurant in the Gaslamp Quarter by a costumed server who turned out to be Rosario Dawson in disguise!

Gary's was at the Big Ban Theory panel, when Bare Naked Ladies came out to perform the theme song.

Steve Hendricks' was the first time with an exhibitor pass.

James told a story about 'Data' from Star Trek and a limo.

Whew!  That was a lot of memories to cover... And some of the attendees had three favorites!  But not enough room to tell them all here!

As I said, Vinnie and I stayed till 7:45 talking with new attendees, and had a great time.  Please see the video at the top right of this blog post for what you can expect when attending one of the meetups, as everyone is welcome!

I'll mention the upcoming August Sunday evening meetup in an upcoming wall post at my own Facebook Fan Page, 'Michael D Hamersky On Comics', after the event page for August is created.  Again... This is a 'free' meetup to attend, AND Milano Coffee Co has great coffee and eats!

TODAY'S FEATURE - Blog #3462 - Part 6 of a series on the 2011 Comic-Con International San Diego:

NOTE: Part 1 of this ongoing series about the 2011 Comic-Con, (Blog #3450),  gave a 'general overview' of why the San Diego Comic Con / Comic Con International: San Diego is very important to me.  Along with multiple links to previous years blog posts, photo albums dating back to 1973, etc, etc.

Part 2, (Blog #3458), pointed out shopping tips on what we are buying to bring to the Comic-Con.  I haven't missed a year since the Comic-Con first moved to the San Diego Convention Center back in 1991.  I first started attending as a comic book dealer back in 1972, at the El Cortez Hotel.  But I still have to plan out what to bring each year, as five days on my feet means a lot of trekking around the convention center and surrounding environs! This con is expanding out every year it seems, with programs being held at two different adjacent hotels now, at opposite ends of the convention center!

Part 3, (Blog #3459), posted the links to what panels / programs I believe are the most important for those of you that are first timers to this comic convention. Plus they are the most 'representative' of what Comic-Con International is, without 'Hollywood' panels / programs being included, UNLESS they are truly comic book oriented.

Part 4, (Blog #3460) posted the links to where I normally would be spending a lot of time at while on the exhibit floor of this comic convention. Where's that?!  Well... When I'm not attending panels / programs with or without my wife Tina, I'll be most likely at the 'Artists Alley' or 'Small Press Pavilion' sections of this convention center.

Part 5, (Blog #3461) posted a link to what is in store for those of you attending the 2011 Comic-Con and wondering about how to beat the online mess of trying to buy memberships for 2012! I don't want to 'repeat' myself here, so please look at the blog #3461 link for the 'news'!

As for Part 6 of this series... Well, Part 5 was about the future, so here I am taking a 'look' at the 'Past'!  And not just a look via my thoughts or collections of memorablilia obtained at Comic-Cons in the past... But from the collection of the 'Founder' of the SDCC himself, Shelf Dorf!

First of all, a BIG THANK YOU to Facebook Friend, Greg Koudoulian, for bringing this special exhibit to my attention!

Secondly, Another BIG THANK YOU to both Matthew Schiff, Multimedia Communications Associate, and Jane Kenealy, Archivist, at the San Diego History Center, for taking time out of their busy Saturday to show both my youngest son and myself the exhibit and the rest of the collection in the reseach library portion of this center!

I'm posting just a couple of photos here from the trip to the Center, and the rest will be posted in a special photo album, 2011 Shel Dorf SDCC Collection - San Diego History Center, at my Facebook fan page, 'Michael D Hamersky On Comics'.

My youngest son, Vinnie, and I spent a total of two hours at the Center, and I know that we will be back to take a closer look at the items that are not on exhibit, but can only be accessed via the downstairs research library.

The exhibit itself? Well, upstairs there are three exhibit cases with items that are more likely to be of a more general public interest  to those coming to the Center.  After all, it is a museum on San Diego History!

There are also banners on the wall in back of the glass cases, where you can stand in front of for photo ops, like we did, as shown at the top right of this blog.

The items presented in the cases include SDCC program books, flyers, photos and other memorabilia.  And even a comic book or two!

Plus they are the most 'representative' of what Comic-Con International is, without 'Hollywood' panels / programs being included, UNLESS they are truly comic book oriented.

Part 4, (Blog #3460) posted the links to where I normally would be spending a lot of time at while on the exhibit floor of this comic convention. Where's that?!  Well... When I'm not attending panels / programs with or without my wife Tina, I'll be most likely at the 'Artists Alley' or 'Small Press Pavilion' sections of this convention center.

So why a Part 5?  And what's the BIG DEAL about 2012?!

Well, first of all, take a look at the Facebook Fan Page for the Comic-Con International, and look at all of the current and previous wall posts and follow up comments by those that wanted to get in, and those that are getting in for the first time.... What a zoo it is!  (And I'm not talking about the world famous San Diego Zoo just a few miles North of the San Diego Convention Center either!)

Secondly, if you are attending the 2011 Comic-Con and even think you want to attend the 2012 event, you need to be sitting down for this, which I first saw at 'The Beat' a couple of days ago, and have been mentioning in my Facebook Fan Page, 'Michael D Hamersky On Comics', as a heads up to my 'fans'!

AND, as far as I can see, that article is right... There hasn't been a retraction since it was first posted on July 13th at 5:51 PM....

Plus, it has been mentioned a few times on the Facebook Fan Page for the Comic-Con, but only by the 'fans' up until this point at 10:45 AM on Friday, July the 15th of 2011.

So until something else breaks, I gotta go with this news...

And letting you, my blog readers as well as my Facebook 'fans' in on this, so you can make plans to walk over to where the memberships for 2012 will be sold at!   Just expect there to be a LOT of people there standing in line starting next Thursday morning, the 21st!

Sorry to be repeating 'bad news', but a lot of people are flying to San Diego this weekend to take in next week's Comic-Con, and I wanted them to be informed before getting out here!

So be sure to head to the right spot to purchase your 2012 Comic-Con memberships, during the special hours!

Again, as for photos I'll be taking at this 2011 Comic-Con... Those will first be uploaded to my 'Wall Photos' album, as I can't take the time at the Comic-Con to label and post them while on the Exhibit Hall floor or at the panels rooms during the con hours.

So at first they will post to the 'Wall Photos' album and then later they will be moved to the: 2011 San Diego Comic Con International SDCC after the Comic-Con is over.

Plus I'll be reserving several photos back for use in this blog, as I review blog the publications given to me for possible review.  Yes, I'm usually given quite a few comics & graphic novels at this comic convention, and get backed up for a couple of months afterwards, review blogging!

That's It for Part 5... And I don't believe there are too many 'Parts' left to blog about as... Comic-Con is only FIVE DAYS away!

NOTE: Part 6 (the weekend edition) will be on a 'Special Exhbit' that I will be seeing tomorrow... That is VERY connected to the SDCC, and Part 7 could be blogging on a special issue of a well known publication here in San Diego that is coming out with that special issue on the 21st, but we'll see if it makes it to me in time to blog about it, BEFORE shutting down the blog for my attending the Comic-Con!  Whew, busy week ahead!
