TODAY'S FEATURE - Blog #3468 - Part 9 of a series on the 2011 Comic-Con International San Diego:

It's 6AM Monday morning, July 25th of 2011... I'm sitting here in my home office, after five days & four nights at the 42nd Annual San Diego Comic Con International!   I have a lot to catch up on from having the business shut down during that time period, but I wanted to share with you what was the 'Hi-Light' of the Comic-Con for me!

The below listing on the web site of the Comic-Con International: San Diego was unassuming enough to most of those that read it either online or in the event guide book...

8:30-11:30 Fandom's 50th Meet-and-Greet— Meet some of the founders of comic book fandom at this mixer that will feature Comic-Con special guests Jean Bails, Richard Kyle, Paul Levitz, Dick and Pat Lupoff, Bill Schelly, Roy Thomas, and Maggie Thompson. Room 28DE  

...But it was THIS event that was the HI-LIGHT of the entire five days of the Comic-Con for me!

Why?  Well... Let me repeat just a little of what I've written about here in this Blog, and at other sites over the years. 

I've been attending the Comic-Con International straight, without missing any years since 1991, the year that Comic-Con moved to the San Diego Convention Center.  So that would make this 2011 con the 21st in a row for me.

But way before that stretch of comic cons... I set up as a comic book dealer at the 1972 San Diego Comic Con as a comics dealer in the El Cortez Hotel... which would make me an 'El Cortez Alumni'. (See this link for a super--sized photo of the earliest photo I have at the Con, in 1973 at the Shearaton Hotel on Harbor Island, and yeah... I had long hair at that time!)

The event on Saturday night was titled a 'Meet n' Greet', which was far more than that for so many that attended, including my wife Tina and I!

First, there was the 'spread' of food that reminded me of the old days at Comic-Con, when there was food for attendees at the Awards 'Banquet', as well as food 'Under the Sails'.

Second, the numbers of those in attendance were staggering, considering how long ago it has been... 50 Years for several of them!  I recognized the names of many who were there, if not their faces. It had been years since several had been at the Comic-Con at all! Which is why Tina and I split up after partaking of the great food, and took multiple photos that I'll be sharing in a special photo album at my Facebook Fan Page, titled:   '2011 SDCC 50th Anniversary of Fandom Reunion'.       

There was also a celebration cake that everyone gathered around, and I'll be sharing photos and a video after viewing it later at my new YouTube Channel, 'Hamersky On Comics'. Please note:  The YouTube Channel was just set up the week before this Comic-Con, so there aren't over 3,400 videos like this Blog has in number of blog posts!

Pictures say a thousand words... So I'm going to stop here at this time, and state again that there will be several photos in that special photo album at that Facebook Fan Page, as I get time to upload them.  I don't normally just 'throw everything up', but would prefer to identify the persons in the photos.  It just depends how this new week starts.  It is always a challenge to re-adjust to 'real life' after spending 5 days at this comic convention!  After this blog is posted, I'll start uploading pics.  The videos will be posted later!

What a great event this night turned out to be!  It truly was the 'HI-LIGHT' of the 5 day Comic-Con for me!  And my pleasure to share what I can via photos and video(s) in the days to follow...

Tomorrow?  I'll be blogging my critique of this 42nd Annual Comic-Con, with both the 'good', 'the okay', and the 'bad'. With possible solutions for the latter.  Tina & I took in the panel, 'Comic Con Talk Back', held from 3:30 till closing time on Sunday at Room 23ABC...

Part 2, (Blog #3458), pointed out shopping tips on what we are buying to bring to the Comic-Con.  I haven't missed a year since the Comic-Con first moved to the San Diego Convention Center back in 1991.  I first started attending as a comic book dealer back in 1972, at the El Cortez Hotel.  But I still have to plan out what to bring each year, as five days on my feet means a lot of trekking around the convention center and surrounding environs! This con is expanding out every year it seems, with programs being held at two different adjacent hotels now, at opposite ends of the convention center!

Plus they are the most 'representative' of what Comic-Con International is, without 'Hollywood' panels / programs being included, UNLESS they are truly comic book oriented.

When I'm not attending panels / programs with or without my wife Tina, I'll be most likely at the 'Artists Alley' or 'Small Press Pavilion' sections of this convention center.

Part 6, (Blog #3462) of this series... Well, Part 5 was about the future, so here I was taking a 'look' at the 'Past'!  And not just a look via my thoughts or collections of memorablilia obtained at Comic-Cons in the past... But from the collection of the 'Founder' of the SDCC himself, Shelf Dorf!

Part 7, (Blog #3466) of this blog series was a brief history and a link to the online version of this week's San Diego Weekly Reader cover feature article on comics creators living in San Diego, and who will be attending the San Diego Comic Con International.

So Part 8, this blog... Is just to tell you that there won't be any more blogs the rest of this week, or this weekend, as I'm celebrating my Birthday the rest of the week at the Comic-Con!

That's because this is the last year I'm going to be able to do so, as the Comic-Con moves up a week in time for next year, the 2012 edition of the SDCCI.

That's because this blog is being written before I get my hands on a hard copy of the magazine... I'm having to check it out via online on Wednesday night if possible, or wait till Thursday morning enroute to the San Diego Convention Center!

A few months back, Jay Allen Sanford, a Facebook Friend of mine, posted a request on his own Facebook profile page, and then an 'event page' asking the following:

HEY SAN DIEGO COMIC CREATORS - wanna be interviewed for a COVER ARTICLE in the SD Reader ish published during Comic-Con? If you create comics, live in San Diego, and will hit the Con, we wanna profile you & your work, including publishing your art in the article, which will be ALL OVER San Diego and the Convention Center that week! Contact me ASAP! FB or email.

Here's the intro/question sheet I'm sending around:

JAS from the Reader here. We were wondering if you're attending this year's Comic-Con and, if so, do you have current comic projects or other plans that you hope to further at the show? (landing freelance assignments, an industry job, or ?)

This year, the San Diego Reader’s annual Comic-Con cover article will profile San Diego-based creators and publishers who are attending in hopes of selling, marketing, or simply networking for their creations or seeking an industry job. The issue will hit the stands on opening day of the Con, and will be available all over downtown and elsewhere around town, including/especially at the Con itself – note that the Reader is the second highest-distribution weekly paper in the U.S., having published weekly since the early 1970s, so this exposure at the show could prove invaluable to your efforts.

If interested, please provide replies to a few queries, so we can prep the issue accordingly. We’ll need replies ASAP in order to include your profile --

1. Please tell us a bit about yourself and your background in comics, as well as what neighborhood in San Diego you live in. We’d also like to know your approximate age, and how many/which other San Diego Comic-Cons you’ve attended in the past? If you’re looking to land work on someone else’s established property, let us know if you have a background doing this kind of work.

2. What is the property you’re working on and/or taking to the Comic-Con? (Unless you hope to land work on an established property) If you’re taking your own comic to the show, please give us a brief synopsis of your comic’s topic, characters, and anything else pivotal that you want to promote at this year’s show. Has it been published yet, or are you seeking a publisher? Are you doing/planning a web-only comic? If possible, please provide one or two artwork samples, formatted as jpg files and sent to my email along with your replies. If you’re a scripter with no artwork at hand, let us know --

3. MOST IMPORTANT: The main thing we want to hear from you is what this year’s San Diego Comic-Con means to you. Not is fluffy general terms, but specifically what you hope to achieve at the show this year. Do you feel your daily life could be changed because of what happens at the Con? What would be the ideal scenario and/or achievement you hope to experience because of the show?

4. If you’ve attended past Comic-Cons, what has been your best experience to date regarding your own aspirations as a comic creator?

TODAY'S FEATURE - Blog #3465:

This comic book was moved up in my 'To Review' stack due to the fact that I had already read and review blogged issue #1 a while back, as seen here... And that the writer of the comic book series will be at the upcoming Comic-Con International that starts later today, Wednesday the 20th, with Preview Night, from 6PM to 9PM!

Please take a moment and check out what I said about issue #1 of this series... 

Okay, back?

Well, this issue continues with an eye catching front cover.

The inside front cover is the 'credits page', which shows that the interior pages will be 'based on the works of L. Frank Baum.  Which I have to say must be pretty much right on, as Kirk Kushin was a recent attendee of the 2011 Winkie Con, the Official Wizard of OZ convention, and I don't believe they threw him out, LOL!

However, once again the first page, and the additional pages are printed in black & white, which can be a 'turn-off' for some potential readers.  For those of you that have to read your comics in color, and don't want to even peruse non-color comics... You are missing out on a good 2nd issue...

I mentioned before that I have received several Wizard of OZ comics in the fast couple of years.  This series so far ISN'T an adaptation of the series of OZ books just being rewritten into a current day 'grim and gritty' revisionist tale.

Which is just fine with me!

The main characters appear to act 'in character', although its been several years since I read most of the OZ books.

What I like besides Kirk's writing, is that the interior art is illustrated by Gonzalo Martinez which flows with the storyline and dialogue. No writer / artist conflict there.

Yes, the front color cover is painted by Sylwia Smerl, but once the cover grabs the attention of the possible reader / buyer of the comic... The interior art better deliver... This issue does!

Like I said above, its been a few years since I read the series of books, so when this issue #2 starts to introduce more of the gazillion Oz characters, I get a little lost on who is who and what they do (or did) in the book series. 

However, I'm okay with Kirk bringing in Trot, Cap'n Bill, Scraps, and the Scarecrow, even though they seem to me to be with a twist in costuming(?) by Kushin & Martinez in art style. 

What 'centered' this storyline for me, was that the story revolved (pun intended), around Dorothy's old house being converted into a museum.  Again, deja vu one more time... Another tornado whips it up into the air and off everyone goes... So it is a fun little caper, but I won't spoil it further for you!

Like issue #1, this second issue also contains a self-contained story, but I believe that Kirk is formatting it into part of a longer story arc.

It's been a while since issue #1 came out, but this issue #2 was worth waiting for!

I need to cut this review blog a little short, as although it is called 'Preview Night' at today's San Diego Comic Con... Everyone gets down there by noonish to stand in line to get in! 

So, my comic book grade for this comic book is a NEAR MINT (NM) 9.4 out of a possible 10.0 grading scale.

10:30-11:30 The Winner Twins, America's Youngest Multiple Award-Winning Authors Share Their Writing Secrets— Teen authors Brittany and Brianna Winner, writers of the national bestselling "Strand" book Series, have written four science fiction novels, a screenplay and a comic book. They will share their writing process, how to overcome writers' block, and team writing skills. In addition, the twins will talk about how they had to overcome dyslexia on their journey to becoming America's youngest multiple award-winning authors. The panel will include Brittany Winner, Brianna Winner,  other panelists to be announced. All in attendance will receive a free Winner Twins Writing Secrets booklet. Room 8

Since I have not yet read this book with a comic book chapter in it... I'm not going to be able to give it a 'comic book grade' at this time...
