TODAY'S FEATURE - Blog #3512:

I haven't seen a full list of the 2011 Shel Dorf Awards winners as of 6:15 AM this Monday morning when this blog goes to press...

However I did see on 'The Beat' that the winner of the category for 'Comics Blogger of the Year' was Heidi MacDonald of 'The Beat'.

Here is what was posted there just a short while ago, plus the photo used at the top right of this blog post:

"The Shel Dorf awards were given out this weekend at the Detroit Fanfare con, and while the complete winner list has not been posted anywhere we could find, we know we won for Best Comics Blogger! Woot! The competition was tough and to have prevailed is really humbling and gratifying. We don’t know who exactly voted on these wards, but whoever did — thank you so much."

Photo of award by Lauren Sankovich.

Congrats to Heidi from Michael D Hamersky 'On Comics'!

Other nominees in the category (with links to the blogs) for this year were:

COMIC BLOGGER OF THE YEAR
*
Stefan Blitz (Forces of Geek)
* Michael Hamersky (Michael D. Hamersky On Comics)
* Rich Johnston (Bleeding Cool News)
* Heidi MacDonald (The Beat)
* Various Contributors (Robot 6)

As you can tell from the above, those are all 'heavy hitters' in this industry!

I appreciate those that nominated me for this category, and all those that voted for me in the voting process. It was an honor to be listed among the 'Top 5' in this category which covered the world of comics bloggers!

Again, congrats to Heidi MacDonald of 'The Beat'!

I'm sure that the other winners will be announced soon at the Facebook Fan Pages for both the 'Detroit Fanfare' & the 'Shel Dorf Awards', so please check out those links for the full list of the winners of each category after they are listed!

TODAY'S FEATURE - Blog #3511:

Sorry for the lateness in this 'Weekend Edition' of my Blog... I had it ready to be posted, when the laptop blipped out on me, and because I didn't have a current backup when writing it... I had to re-write it...!

Last night I rented the Season 1 DVD of 'The Man From U.N.C.L.E.' TV show that ran for the 1964-65 TV Season.

I did this to introduce it to my youngest son, Vinnie, who other than interfiling the comic books of this TV series in inventory backstock to sell; had not viewed any episodes of this TV Series.

We watched the first three episodes to get an idea of the show, and episode #23 'The Brain-Killer Affair', because it had Yvonne Craig in it, whom I've met recently at a comic con!

Anyways... The TV show ran for four seasons... And its background history can be found at this Wikipedia entry for the show.  The show was originally aired from September 22, 1964 to January 15th of 1968. The list of episodes can be found at this link.

Season one from 1964-65 is shown at this link as to what the competition aired against it was.  I was my son's age at this time, and in a one TV set household.  So instead of this show, my folks had on either 'The Red Skelton Show' that also ran for an hour on CBS, or 'McHales Navy' / 'The Tycoon' on ABC.

Season two from 1965-66 was where NBC moved it to a different night, to Fridays.  Which is kind of like what is done today, moving shows to Friday that have a 'cult' type status, but low viewership.  The airtime was 10PM which was better for me, because it wasn't a 'school night', and only 'The Jimmy Dean Show' was on ABC, and 'Slattery's People' on CBS.

Season three from 1966-67 was terrible in that the show was moved up earlier for air time.  We watched 'The Green Hornet' & 'Time Tunnel' on ABC, which overan UNCLEs time slot!  Re-run time during the summer would be 'The Wild Wild West' & 'Hogan's Heroes' on CBS.

Season four from 1967-68 got no better! The show was moved to Monday nights.  Your household would have to be watching 'The Monkees' on NBC to continue on with the UNCLE show that was next. Otherwise your household wouldn't turn the channels half-way through 'Gunsmoke' on CBS or 'Cowboy In Africa' on ABC.  This is probably why this was the last season for the UNCLE Show.

I'm not going to get into talking about 'The Girl From U.N.C.L.E.' TV Show or the Gold Key Comic Books.  That would be a topic for another time.

I am going to mention a high school buddy of mine, David Heilmann, who was really into this 'secret agent' stuff at the time.  It was due to him that I seeked out the TV Show and espisodes that I missed a little later.  He had a great collection of items from this time period, but I've lost touch with him since my first getting married and moving to the LA Metro Area.

Speaking of comic books...

Here's a link to the Gold Key series of 'The Man From U.N.C.L.E.' comic books that ran from May of 1965 through April of 1969. They are hard to find in high grade today... I usually don't have any of these comics in stock, at my online comic book shop, ComicBooksCircus.com, but you can always check for sure.

I've never see the 1966 Man From UNCLE Annual from World Distributors in the UK, but here is a link when someone uploads it.

The Man From UNCLE 1987 comic book series from Entertainment Publishing had eleven issues.  I sometimes have copies of these.

The 1993 2 issue mini-series from Millennium Publications is easier to find.  Also when available is listed in my online comic book shop.

As far as I can tell, those are the only four comic book series or one-shots on the TV Show.

Here's Vinnie's thoughts on the TV Show, after viewing only four episodes...

Vinnie:  Last night, my dad, stepmom Tina, and I started watching the 1964 TV show, "The Man from U.N.C.L.E." season one.

It came out around the time when James Bond was first getting popular in the United States, as they both featured secret agents. We watched the first three episodes, and I learned the basic storyline of the show. I haven't seen any of these episodes or read the comics before, so I essentially had no knowledge of it whatsoever.

We started watching it, and I realized it was in black and white. It didn't surprise me considering the release date of the show. The stories each episode told were interesting, and I do believe that these were a lot better than today's entertainment on TV, however I don't watch much anyways. The acting was also relatively good. They all played their roles well, and acted how I figured their characters personalities would be. I really enjoyed the show as it was something different for me. Of course, with the show being 47 years old, many other people may have watched these before me. As a matter of fact, my dad started watching this show at the same age that I am today!

Thanks, Vinnie for your thoughts above!  I enjoy introducing you to some of my favorite TV Shows and their Comics adaptations via DVD sets like this one!

TODAY'S FEATURE - Blog #3510:

Back in Blog #3378, I review blogged *PPFST! #29, which was my first introduction to this title.  The comic book had been discontinued several years ago, and the publisher, Jim Main, was just bringing back the title after a seven year hiatus with issue #28, which I had not seen.

I've not seen issue #30 either, since review blogging #29, which I gave a VF/NM comic book grade. So I was interested to see what had transpired since the last issue I had read, as anthologies have to be one of the hardest comics genres to publish!

So what's this comic book anthology about?  Here's a description:

"A gorgeous full color cover by Brad Foster kicks off the latest issue of Jim Main's long-running comic, fiction, illustration publication. Also included is a superb full color back cover by Troy Boyle and John Larter, B&W interior illustartions by Kevin Duncan, Brad Foster and Christopher Durant. Strips this issue by Brien Wayne Powell(Magnet Man), Nate Corrigan(Death Comics and Some Comics About Some Stuff), Steve Keeter, Rock Baker and Jeff Austin(The Return of The Mysticist), George Leon(Super Surfer Dudes), Al and Rick Limacher(The Wild Zone), Robert W. Brunelle(Mr. Brunelle Explains It All), Simon Mackie(Pinky Gets A Stamp From Outer Space and The Coffee House)), Steve Shipley(The Death Of Digital), Henry Gustavson(Bill The Cockroach), Dan Burke(The League of Annoying Heroes) and Michael Anthony Carroll(Chibi Ninja Epic). 56 pages of enjoyment for 7.00 postpaid."

What were my thoughts on this comic book?

Front Cover - By Brad Foster illustrated circa 2007.  A PUP-BOT Theatre scene. Not for sure what this was all about, nor why it was chosen as the front cover artwork... But it kind of goes with the oversized title log of *PPFSZT!

Inside Front Cover - By Kevin Duncan.  A more recent pin up page (dated 2011), which got my imagination going when looking at it...

Splash Page - Used as a Table of Contents Page, which is always good to have right away for an 'anthology comic'! Especially as some comics creators only use initials for their signature.

Page 2 - The Editor Speaks! - Always a good feature to have, so that the reader of the comic can figure out what the Editor was thinking by including certain stories, what may be coming up in a future issue, etc.

With so many features in this issue, I'm only going to hi-light some of those that stood out personally for me.

Page 6 - Death Comics, by Nate Corrigan. A good six panel page. Who says you can't make your point on just one page?!

Page 7 -11 - The Return of the Mysticist, by Steve Keeter, Rock Baker and Jeff Austin.  This was a feature I really enjoyed!  I'm glad it was placed near the front of the comic.

Page 8 - The U.F.O. Checklist.  Yeah, it's an ad page... But it presents to readers of this comic that there are others creating indie comics and sharing cross exposure by printing this page in their comics.  Good to see this spirit of collaboration!

Page 21 - 30 - The Wild Zone, by Al and Rick Limacher.  Kind of 'out there', but of interest to those  that are into this 'genre' of storytelling.

Page 33 - 34 - Pinky gets a Stamp from Outer-Space', by Simon Mackie. Funny two-pager!

Page 35 - 38 - Timely storyline... As comics are going more and more digital...Here's a story on 'Death Of Digital'!  by Steve Shipley.

Page 43 - 48 - The League of Annoying Heroes, by Dan Burke. Good illustrations with a storyline that is fun to read.

Page 51 - 52- The letters pages (*PPFSZT!-ED OFF!!!).  What I miss about modern comics... Very few have letters pages...

Back Cover - By Troy Boyle and John Larter... Good way to end the issue, with a good sized pinup!

This issue is also a pretty well organized 'anthology' comic book, just like the issue #29 that I recently reviewed.  There seemed to be something for just about everyone in this issue... Which is hard to do!  I did notice that KA-Blamm didn't print this issue... ComiXpress did.  I would have to pull out my earlier issue to see if there was any printing differences... But offhand I didn't see anything stand out different, production wise from the printer.

I would have to say that Jim Main, Editor & Publisher is on the right track with this series.

Thus I'm giving this comic book a VERY FINE / NEAR MINT (VF/NM) 9.0 out of a possible 10.0 comic book grade.

You can see this comic book for sale at Main Enterprises ecrater online store.

Main Enterprises is renovating its Facebook presence, so I'll hold off on posting a link here at this time...

Thanks again to Jim Main of Main Enterprises for bringing this latest issue of *PPFSZT! to my attention!

TODAY'S FEATURE - Blog #3509:

I first 'met' Grasiela Rodriguez on Facebook, when I was contacting her and Javier Hernandez regarding the 2010 San Gabriel Valley Comic Book Fest (SGVCBF), that I was looking at to 'cover' via this blog.

Grasiela was the primary con promoter contact of the SGVCBF for that year's show, and was gracious in meeting myself and my wife Tina at the front door of the show when we arrived.

For more info and photos on that show, please see this link to the special photo album at my Facebook fan page, 2010 San Gabriel Valley Comic Book Festival. As I link to it, I see that I haven't uploaded all of the pics taken... As I was using / saving the rest for blogs, some of which were used for blog #3239. Plus individual blogs on several of the comics creators.

At the same time I was at that show I was given several comics by indie comics creators who were exhibiting there.  Including Rafael Navarro, Geo Brawn IV, Javier Hernandez, Jim Lujan, Michael Aushenker, John Narcomey, and more!

Since that great show was cancelled for this year 2011, due the death of one of the persons who sponsored it, I didn't think I'd get to see Grasiela until later on in 2011.

So I was pleased to see Grasiela driving down to attend the recent 2011 So Cal Comic Con in Oceanside, (as seen in the top right photo of this blog). She presented me with a copy of her latest work, 'Lunatic Fringe' #1,  so I asked her to pose with it for review purposes.

So what's this comic book about?  Here's a description:

"It started with a boy and a girl...and a heart and a game...

The life of a "normal" girl intertwines in a tale of love/hate and redemption."

Lunatic Fringe #1 TM and © Not Your Friend Comic Books. All rights reserved.

Written and Illustrated by Grasiela Rodriguez

Standard Comic
Full Color
Page Count: 24 - POD $4.99 Cover Price

What were my thoughts on this comic book?

Front Cover - Very striking! The black, pink, red, & white colors really accentuate the front cover!  With the tag line 'We All Know You're Out There!'...  Well, I just had to turn the page right away!

Inside Front Cover - The acknowledgements page include personal thank yous.  Plus it tells that this issue is the story of Sarah Starr and that it was inspired by Tom Petty's "Woman In Love".

Splash Page - Not used as a splash page, but rather as page 1, so the story starts right away...

I have seen Grasiela's artwork before, but not in a sequential format such as this.  The art work reminds me of good underground comix artwork, and the lettering flows within the frames, without covering up the art.

The colors used in this issue blend together in some panels, and then in other panels is very striking... Making a strong emphasis!

The storyline is illustrated in a 'groovy' kind of style, which reminds me of both the underground comix style I mentioned earlier, plus a 'taste' of what Marvel Comics tried to do with 'My Love', 'Our Love Story', and other romance comics of the late Silver Age of Comics, when they had Jim Steranko, John Buscema, John Romita, Gene Colan, and others jump start the last gasp of romance comics.

I found this issue #1 to be refreshing and one that should 'click' with today's comic reading audience looking for alternative comics!

I'm giving this comic book a VERY FINE / NEAR MINT (VF/NM) 9.0 out of a possible 10.0 comic book grade.

You can see it and other works by Grasiela Rodriguez at her web site ProjectUnit83.com.

You can also see some of the animation mentioned in the comic book at her own YouTube Channel:  NotYourFriendComics!

Here is where you can purchase this comic book, if you aren't lucky enough to see Grasiela set up at a comic con:  Indy Planet - an online comic book shop.

For where you can interact with the publisher, Not My Friend Comic Books, be sure to 'LIKE' their Facebook Fan Page!

Oh... For those of you going to APE in San Francisco... Grasiela will be at booth 211, along with Jim Lujan.  Stop by and say 'hello' to both!

Thanks again to Grasiela for bringing this first issue of 'Lunatic Fringe' to my attention!

TODAY'S FEATURE - Blog #3508:

Here is a review on the hard cover graphic novel presentation by Greek newcomer, Giannis Milonogiannis, published by Archaia Entertainment.

What is this graphic novel about?  Here's a description:

"The murder of the CEO at the head of the world’s foremost cybernetic corporation sets the stage for Old City Blues, the gripping new futuristic noir from publisher, Archaia Entertainment.

Old City Blues begins in the year 2048 of Southeastern Europe. Built on the ruins of the country once known as Greece, New Athens is a city crawling with life—low-life, that is. From mech smugglers and drug dealers, to corrupt politicians and all-too-powerful corporations, the city is at the mercy of high-tech criminals. And it’s up to Solano, Thermidor, and the rest of the New Athens Special Police to keep the city in order. When the cybernetically augmented founder of a tech corporation called Hayashi is found murdered, it seems to be just another case of cyborg persecution. But Hayashi Corporation’s strange response to the incident raises suspicion in Solano and the Special Police. The mystery they unravel will lead them straight into the wasteland of the Old City."

What were my thoughts on this graphic novel?

While the premise is one that sounds somewhat 'familiar'... The different style artwork by Giannis Milonogiannis gives a new approach to this genre.

It does help that Giannis is also the writer, in that he can illustrate his vision of the storyline in a black & white format.

The only possible problem in a work such as this, is that when one person is both the writer & illustrator, they are the one responsible for the total work.  If the reader doesn't like the storyline or the art, there is only one person that the dislike can be associated with...

I'm glad to say that Giannis comes through for me on this graphic novel.  The storyline made me 'hang in there', until I felt comfortable enough seeing the 'sketchy' style of artwork.  Unusual enough style to stop to mention, yet after seeing a few pages in this style, I found that the artwork captured the mood intended for this work.

There is a good balance between pages with a lot of copy versus pages with very little or no copy.  I found this easier to read, understand, and enjoy... The more I read on.

I'm giving this graphic novel a VERY FINE / NEAR MINT (VF/NM) 9.0 out of a possible 10.0 comic book grade, because although I liked the artwork shown in this book, I'm also realizing that my recommendations are 'out there' for all to see, and hold myself accountable for that.  I found myself liking this artwork style after a few pages, but others might not give it that long to adapt to for reading... My suggestion is, if you like this genre of story, then hang in there and give this artwork by newcomer Giannis Milonogiannis to sway you to finish it!
