Michael D Hamersky On Comics Presents His Take On:

Read A Comic Book In Public Day
At Claremont, San Diego, California!

TODAY'S FEATURE IS BLOG #3702 -   Yesterday, Vinnie and I attended the 3rd Annual 'Read Comics in Public Day' event that was held in the Claremont neighborhood of San Diego, California.

The middle photo above shows me reading a copy of 'The Comic Book History of Comics' by Fred Van Lente and Ryan Dunlavey, which I found to be fascinating!

The larger photo to the right shows those that had shown up early in the morning, outside of the Starbucks on Genessee and Balboa Avenue.

This local event was once again hosted by Chriss Cornish, who has been holding this since 2010 at the same location.

This event is just one of many events that was inspired by the main 'Read Comics In Public' group started by Brian Heater and Sarah Morean back in 2010.  I urge you to take a look at their link, and see what is happening tomorrow, August 28th in your area, so you too can celebrate the 'Read Comics in Public' Day!

Chriss Cornish elected to hold the San Diego event on this past Sunday.  The event page for the San Diego event is at:  Read Comics In Public Day - San Diego.

Chriss' main Facebook page has just been started at:  San Diego Reads Comics In Public, which I urge you to 'Like'!

Photos that Vinnie and I took of the couple of hours we attended the San Diego event can be seen at my Facebook Fan Page in the special photo album titled:  2012 Read Comics In Public Day.

(Vinnie and I would have stayed longer at this event, but I had a meeting of the San Diego Comic Fest to attend that ran during the later hours of this event.  I'll be posting on that later, either here, at my Facebook fan page, and / or the Facebook fan page for the San Diego Comic Fest.)

My thanks once again to Chriss Cornish, who held this 2012 event.  I urge you to 'Like' her Facebook fan page, and to check out whatever is being held in your area on Tuesday, August 28th!

~ Michael

Michael D Hamersky On Comics Presents His Take On:

The Comic Station
At Haddon Heights, New Jersey!

TODAY'S FEATURE IS BLOG #3701 -   As stated in yesterday's blog... We are back from a Summer Vacation visiting Tina's family in South New Jersey!

While there we both took in a tour of a few LCBS (Local Comic Book Shops) in the area, plus the Philadelphia Comic-Con that took place on Sunday, August 19th at the Ramada Philadelphia Airport in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.  Yesterday's blog, #3700, was the review blog on the Comic-Con.

Today's blog is a review blog on the first of the LCBS that we saw in South New Jersey.

That would be 'The Comic Station' at 615 Station Avenue, Haddon Heights, NJ.

The top middle photo above is myself, at the front of the LCBS.

The third photo, (at the top right), are the co-owners of the LCBS, Mike and Scott Kaitz at the sales counter.

I found that the location of this LCBS was right across the street from the Haddon Heights Library, and also close to other main buildings in the town.  Indeed, 'The Comic Station' was centrally located on the two blocks that comprised the town!

The exterior of the LCBS was a little small, but when opening the door, I could see that it was a long rectangular size, and was deeper in depth than I expected!

I also found that the front of the shop had the current comics and a good selection of toys. Behind the sales counter to the left, was a door to another room with a lot of backstock of comics!  Tina picked up a couple of back issues of 'Fringe' that she had not yet read, while I talked with Scott about the LCBS.

Mike was in the far back of the shop, and stopped long enough to also talk with me.  Plus he posed for a couple of pics, that I'm sharing here and at the special photo album hosted at my Facebook Fan Page, 'Michael D Hamersky on Comics'.

I found that this was a well stocked LCBS, and that those of you near the Haddon Heights area of New Jersey should stop in and check this shop out!

My thanks to Scott & Mike for showing me around their LCBS during our trip to South New Jersey!

Here is the web site link for 'The Comic Station'.

Here is the link to their Facebook fan page for 'The Comic Station'.

Plus again, here is the link to the photos of this LCBS at my Facbook Fan Page that I shot during this part of our trip.

~ Michael

Michael D Hamersky On Comics Presents His Take On:

The August 19th of 2012 Philadelphia Comic-Con
Held At The Ramada Philadelphia Airport in Essington, Pennsylvania

TODAY'S FEATURE IS BLOG #3700 -   We are back from a Summer Vacation visiting Tina's family in South New Jersey!

While there we both took in a tour of a few LCBS (Local Comic Book Shops) in the area, plus the Philadelphia Comic-Con that took place on Sunday, August 19th at the Ramada Philadelphia Airport in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.  (Photo of Ramada is the 2nd from the left at the top of this blog post.)

First, I want to thank the promoter of the comic con, Derek Woywood, who is pictured at the top right photo of this blog post. (Thanks, Derek!)

Second, I want to mention 'my take' on this comic book show...

To tell the truth, I was kind of excited to be able to see Silver Age artist, Herb Trimpe, back on the East Coast.  He and Dan Nokes were the 'Special Guests' that were advertised for this comic book show, as seen in the flyer to the left...

However, Herb had car trouble the morning of the show, and was not able to attend... At least by the time we left at 12:45 PM... So instead we saw Dan Nokes sketching at his table, and also Paris Cullins, who stopped long enough to introduce himself and have photos taken with a few of his friends.  (Those photos and the rest can be seen at the special photo album hosted by my Facebook Fan Page, Michael D Hamersky On Comics.)

The show was 4500 square feet in size, and had many comics dealers along with the two comic book special guests.  We picked up a box size of comics that I hadn't seen out here on the West Coast for a while, and it has already arrived, so I'll be placing those up in my online comic book shop, ComicBooksCircus.com, pretty soon for sale.

I found this 'comic-con' to be more a comic book show, as we call them here on the West Coast, but still had plenty of time to check out all the dealers' tables in the 2 & 1/2 hours that we attended this show.

Additionally the entry fee was very reasonable!  Only $3 for admission, and a $1 off with the flyer in hand at the ticket table.

Plus, unlike several other 'comic cons' that I've attended in recent years... This is a true comic book show, not a 'pop culture' convention using the term 'comic con' in its name.

The next Philadelphia Comic-Con is scheduled for Sunday, November 18th, from 10 AM to 4 PM at the same location, in Essington, PA.

Here is the web site link for the Philadelphia Comic-Con.

I don't see a Facebook fan page for the Con...

According to its web site... This is 'Philadelphia's Longest Running Comic Convention'!

After attending this one... I can see why.  If you are in the Philly area, check it out!

~ Michael

Michael D Hamersky On Comics Presents His Take On:

The Jack Kirby Collector #59
From TwoMorrows Publishing

 alt=

TODAY'S FEATURE IS BLOG #3699 -   I am continuing to review blog items that I picked up  during our five days at the 2012 Comic-Con International: San Diego, (aka San Diego Comic Con or SDCC).

Here is what this magazine is about per the publisher's promo:

"Summer 2012 - 104 page magazine with COLOR
JACK KIRBY COLLECTOR #59 shifts to a new format (104 magazine-size pages with COLOR SECTION, $10.95), and opens “The Kirby Vault”, unlocking a treasure trove of rarities by the "King" of comics! There's personal correspondence from Jack to fans and co-workers, private photos and accounts from family and friends' interaction with Kirby, a COLOR gallery of his amazing collage work, rare art from Marvelmania, bootleg album covers featuring Kirby art, private sketches, and other artifacts. PLUS: A transcript of a never-before released 1969 visit by San Diego fans to the Kirby home (where Jack answers all the questions you would ask if you were there in ’69)! Also, "Kirby Kinetics" (a new column by NORRIS BURROUGHS examining Kirby’s art and compositional skills), MARK EVANIER and our other regular columnists sounding off about all things Kirby, and we present Jack’s uninked pencil art from unused 1970s DC pages, a complete Kirby story, and more! Edited by John Morrow."

I'll start my review next...

Front Cover -  Looking pretty good to me!  Nice usage of a comic book page along with a photo of the King himself!

Inside Front Cover - A house ad for other TwoMorrows publications....

Splash Page - This page is a true splash page in that it shows the 'Contents' along with an unfinished Thundarr The Barbarian illustration.  So a nice beginning for this issue.

Interior Pages -  The 'splash page' listed quite a few features for this issue, including:  'Opening Shot', 'Kirby Obscura', 'Kirby Kinetics', 'Auteur Theory of Comics', 'Innerview', 'Kirby As A Genre', Gallery 1, 2 & 3, ' Unearthed', 'Collector Comments', and more.  There seemed to be more pages, now at this reduced size, which I appreciated.

Inside Back Cover - Another house ad by TwoMorrows Publishing.

Back Cover - A pin-up page of Captain America by Jack Kirby - an unused 1966 promotional piece.

My take on this magazine?

Well... Quite honestly, I was pretty pleased that the magazine had decreased in size, back to the size it had been before expanding in length & height.  This change was after issue #58 which had been a graphic novel sized book.  Issue #57 had been one of the oversized issues, so these last three issues have been all over in size!  The theme 'The Kirby Vault', was kind of cute, and kind of showed that this issue was kind of a free for all with different and miscellaneous features being presented.  Which was okay for me, after reading issue #58, which was basically just on Stan Lee and Jack Kirby.

My rating for this magazine?  A Very Fine / Near Mint (VF/NM) 9.0 out of a possible 10.0 comic book grading scale.  Thanks to John Morrow for having this magazine shipped direct to his booth at the 2012 Comic-Con International: San Diego!

You can find this comic book for sale at the TwoMorrows web site

Plus, be sure to check out what the Publisher is doing at their Facebook fan page!

~ Michael

Michael D Hamersky On Comics Presents His Take On:

Monster Candy
A Very ALIEN Halloween

 alt=

TODAY'S FEATURE IS BLOG #3698 -   For those that have been reading this blog for the last few weeks... Here's yet another comic graphic novel that I found recently from our five days at the 2012 Comic-Con International: San Diego, (aka San Diego Comic Con or SDCC).

Here is what this graphic novel is about per the publisher's promo on their Facebook fan page:

"Also available Comic-Con 2012, MONSTER CANDY: A VERY ALIEN HALLOWEEN. Join Timmy as he uncovers an alien plot to invade earth on Halloween!"

Not much to go on... So I'll start my review next...

Front Cover -  The front cover looks pretty sharp!  Both Brian Phillipson & Alex Murillo have the top credits, above the graphic novel's title, but there is an even larger credit:  'Art by Alex Nino' at the bottom!

Inside Front Cover - Artwork by Alex Nino....

Splash Page - This page has the title and that it is from 'Bliss On Tap'... So it's not a splash page.

Interior Pages -  There is a 'credits page' which is nice to see, and then a facing splash page, which is actually an 'intro' to Timmy Locks, a ten year old.  Nice start for this graphic novel! Turning the page, I see a two page spread, which is nice, and which also tells me that Alex will be using more than just regular sized panels in this graphic novel. Indeed, there are more single page panels as well as the story goes on.   The interior pages are printed in black & white only, but Alex's artwork flows well with this approach.  All too soon, the story is ended... but wait... What's this?  A 'To Be Continued In... Goldie Locks and the Three Monsters'.  I didn't see that coming!

Inside Back Cover - More artwork by Alex Nino.

Back Cover - An illustration of  what I now know to be 'Goldie Locks and the Three Monsters'...

My take on this graphic novel?

Well... Quite honestly, I was pretty pleased while reading this graphic novel... Until the final page, when it announced 'To Be Continued In...'.  That wasn't too cool, IMO.  However, I was pleased with the storyline, the script, dialogue, and artwork up to that point.  I'm not for sure why the storyline stopped there, to be continued in 'Goldie Locks and the Three Bears' graphic novel... So I'll take the whole presentation into account for my comic book grade...

My rating for this comic book?  A Very Fine / Very Fine Plus  (VF/VF+) 8.25 out of a possible 10.0 comic book grading scale.  Thanks to Brian for bringing this graphic novel to my attention at his booth at the 2012 Comic-Con International: San Diego!

You can find this comic book for sale at the Bliss on Tap web site

Plus, be sure to check out what the Publisher is doing at their Facebook Fan Page!

~ Michael
