Michael D Hamersky On Comics Presents His Take On:

Robert 'Robbie' Solomon
Who Worked For Martin Goodman's Companies...
Brought These Two Young Men To Comics!
Pictured above (L-R) Stan Lee (aka Stanley Martin Lieber) & Larry Lieber circa 1969!

TODAY'S FEATURE IS BLOG #3707 -   This past Saturday, in Blog #3606, I shared with you a special photo album that I featured on my Facebook Fan Page, titled... "Magazine Management Company's History".

On Sunday, I heard from Mr. Allen Bellman, a 'Golden Age' comic book creator that has been mentioned in this blog before.   Here's the email from Allen Bellman:

Stan Lee was the nephew of Robert Solomon, called "Uncle  Robby" who was a brother in law to Martin Goodman, Solomon was a former ladies hat salesman who was brought in to work for Goodman. And that is how Stan began his career. I can always remember Stan walking behind Robby Solomon following him around, I suppose "breaking"  him in for his job . After  passing, Robert Solomon,  at a young age, Stan Lee never walked behind anyone again !

I should know, I WAS THERE !  (Photo of Allen at age 21 in 1945 shown.)

Have a great day,

Allen

After reading the above... I remembered seeing the name Robert Solomon before.  As a matter of fact, it was a paragraph from Larry Lieber in  an article.  Larry, for those of you that don't know... Is the younger brother of Stan Lee, (aka Stanley Martin Lieber, before he changed his name).

Larry Lieber:  "I remember once, and I don’t know when it was, but my uncle, Rob Solomon, took me down to Timely Comics. They were in a building called the McGraw Hill Building, (seen to the left in 1936), later on in the Empire State Building. I actually worked there when I was about 17, but not in the comics; and he took me down there."

So that would make both Larry and his brother, Stan, that were both introduced to Timely / Atlas Comics by their Uncle Robbie Solomon!

Here's what Joe Simon, (who hired Stan at eight dollars a week), said in an interview: "Simon: "Your Uncle Robbie brought you into the office one day and he said, 'This is Martin Goodman's wife's nephew'. [sic] ... You were seventeen years old".
Lee: "Sixteen and a half!"
Simon: "Well, Stan, you told me seventeen. You were probably trying to be older.... I did hire you."

As to what relationship Robbie was to Stan and Larry... Robert Solomon was a brother to Stan & Larry's mother, Cecilia née Solomon, who married Jack Lieber.

So what did Robert do for Martin's companies?

Here's a bit from Brad Elliott:  "If you pay attention to the names in the Ownership Statements, you’ll notice that up until 1952, Robert Solomon is listed as the Atlas Business Manager".

From Vince Fago, (source - Alter Ego #11 by Jim Amash): "Robert Solomon was married to Martin Goodman's sister, and he kept everybody honest. It was a sin if you worked on the side for anybody else. Some guys would rent a hotel room and moonlight".

BTW, I couldn't find a photo of Robert Solomon, and mentioned this to Allen Bellman. As a follow up email from Allen Bellman stated:  "Michael, I once asked Stan for his (Solomon's) foto, and he didn't have one. I was going to write a story on Robby Solomon for Alter-Ego mag.  He was a short gentleman, nice looking face but got on every ones back to draw like Mac Raboy and artists like him".

From HollywoodNepotism.net: "Martin Goodman, (shown at the left), began publishing pulp magazines in 1933, just as the earliest comics books were appearing.  His company was nepotistic from the start, with his brother Abe Goodman in charge of accounting, his brother Dave Goodman doing photography, and his brother Artie Goodman in production. Martin's brother-in-law, Robbie Solomon, was the office gopher".

From CopyCatEffect Blog on Blogspot: "(Mel) Stuart was also survived by his first cousin, Marvel Comics genius Stan Lee. Stan Lee was born Stanley Martin Lieber in New York City on December 28, 1922, in the apartment of his Romanian-born Jewish immigrant parents, Celia (née Solomon) and Jack Lieber, in Manhattan. Recall that Mel Stuart was born Stuart Solomon. It was with the help of Stan Lee's uncle Robbie Solomon, Lee became an assistant in 1939 at the new Timely Comics division of pulp magazine and comic-book publisher Martin Goodman's company. Young Stanley Lieber made his comic-book debut with the text filler "Captain America Foils the Traitor's Revenge" in Captain America Comics #3 (May 1941), using the pseudonym "Stan Lee," which years later he would legally take as his name. Lee, whose cousin Jean was Goodman's wife, was formally hired by Timely editor Joe Simon".

From the book, 'Stan Lee: Comic Book Superhero':  "Lee's Uncle Robbie, who set up Lee with the job at Timely, did not bother telling Goodman that Lee had been hired. According to Lee, Goodman appeared suprised when he saw him in the office".

Vince Fago, (Source - Alter Ego #11 by Jim Amash):  Anyway, Solomon just sat in the offices and talked. He had a store on 34th Street and sold women's hats, but he'd always come into the offices. He never worked. He was loud and talked all the time and knew absolutely nothing. He was just a watchman for Goodman.

Via the Marvel Wiki:  Link.  As you can see, there is next to nothing on Robert at that link.

Per Atlas Tales... Robert Solomon was the Business Manger for Atlas Comics in 1951, as seen at this comic book listing, and others at the web site.

It would also be shown that Robert was also involved as an 'editor'. From GCD - The credits for Robert Solomon are seen at:  List of searched items.

That's about it on Robert 'Robbie' Solomon at this time, as there just isn't that much online to refer to him... Other than the same repeated line that he helped get Stan Lee into comics.

For more info on Larry Lieber, here is the link to his Wikipedia entry.

Here is the link to Stan Lee's Wikipedia entry.

Unfortunately Robert Solomon doesn't have a Wiki entry...

Again, my thanks to Mr. Allen Bellman, (his web site linked here), who started this blog post!

~ Michael

My Take On: Red Circle Books - From Martin Goodman's Company

Michael D Hamersky On Comics Presents His Take On:

Red Circle Books
From One of Martin Goodman's Companies!

 alt=

TODAY'S FEATURE IS BLOG #3706 -   I wanted to share a special photo album that I started last night on my Facebook Fan Page, titled... "Magazine Management Company's History".

The first four photos are from Martin's company, Lion Books, that published Red Circle Books.

Martin Goodman, (pictured to the left in 1942), who was the owner of the magazine house 'Magazine Management Company', founded Lion Books in November of 1949. Early releases carried the imprint "Red Circle Books" (numbers 1-7, 12 and 13); later volumes were "Lion Books" (numbers 8-11 and 14-233).

For those of you that don't know... Martin Goodman was also the founder of Timely Comics, that later evolved into 'Marvel Comics'.

At one time, Martin's magazines and books were the main basis of revenue for his company.

Indeed, Timely Comics just had a small office within the magazine empire's mass of offices at one time.

As I mentioned above, 'Red Circle Books' was an imprint of 'Lion Books'. The first several paperbacks from the company were imprinted with the 'Red Circle Books' logo, but the 'Lion' name and its famous Lion colophon soon graced the cover on all of the books from this company. Indeed, the book numbered 1 through 7, plus 12 & 13, were Red Circle Books, but books numbered 8 & 11, and 14 through 233 made  up the original Lion series.

Actually, there were two distinct series from Lion Books. Lion’s standard sized 25¢ book was printed until 1955. But then, beginning in 1954, Lion actually began printing Lion Library, 35¢ LL series, with the tall-format, plus Lion Books, the 25¢ LB series, which included both tall and standard format, in a combined sequential order of publishing.

As well, the Lion Books cover art was considered first-rate, and indeed many of the books covers and titles were considered overtly provocative!   Besides the artwork, there were several authors who had beginnings with Lion Books and became collectible, among them Jim Thompson and Robert Bloch!

Martin Goodman sold Lion Book to New American Library in the summer of 1957. Several Lion titles were later reprinted under their Signet label.

Michael D Hamersky On Comics Presents His Take On:

Fat Jack's Comicrypt
At Oaklyn, New Jersey!

TODAY'S FEATURE IS BLOG #3705 -   As stated in last week's blogs... We are back from a Summer Vacation visiting Tina's family in South New Jersey!

While there we both took in a tour of a few LCBS (Local Comic Book Shops) in the South New Jersey area, plus the Philadelphia Comic-Con that took place on Sunday, August 19th at the Ramada Philadelphia Airport in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.  Last Thursday's blog, #3700, was the review blog on the Comic-Con.

Today's blog is a review blog on the third of the LCBS that we saw in South New Jersey.

That would be 'Fat Jack's Comicrypt' at 521 White Horse Pike, in Oaklyn, NJ.

The top middle photo above this text is myself, at the front window of this LCBS.

The third photo, (at the top right), is a photo of the LCBS's frontage on White Horse Pike.

I found that the location of this LCBS was easy to find, even though the width of the shop was a little small.

As stated, the exterior frontage of this LCBS was a little small, but when opening the door, I could see that it was shaped in a long rectangular size, and was deeper in depth than I expected from seeing the frontage!

There were a couple of female customers in the shop when we arrived, and shop manager Brian Rappa, was serving them.

While I checked out the LCBS and took photos, (which can be seen in this special photo album at my Facebook fan page), Tina started checking out the back issue bins.

Brian declined to be photographed for the photo album, but was well versed in comics history.  His knowledge of comics and his well stocked back issue bins make this LCBS a good place to fill in holes in comic book runs, IMO, if you live close to Oaklyn.

I found a few back issue magazines that I hadn't seen before and picked those up for myself while we were there.

My thanks to Brian Rappa for showing me around this LCBS during our trip to South New Jersey!

Here is the web site link for Fat Jack's Comicrypt, which has its main LCBS in Philadelphia, PA.

Here is the link to the Facebook fan page for Fat Jack's Comicrypt.

Plus again, here is the link to the special photo album at my Facbook Fan Page that I shot during this part of our trip.

BTW, I should mention, and will now... That this LCBS in New Jersey is home to approximately five cats, which frequent the insides of the shop.  So those of you that are allergic to cats, please be advised.

~ Michael

The Friday, August 31st of 2012 Leo Carrillo Film Festival in Carlsbad, California!
 alt=

TODAY'S FEATURE IS BLOG #3704 -   I previously posted that the 2012 Leo Carrillo Film Festival was starting on August 17th, (in blog #3696), with a Special Presentation:  Dinner & A Movie!  As seen in this flyer:  Dinner And A Movie.  Tickets were reserved for only 150 attendees, with a cost of only $30 each person.

Unfortunately, Tina and I had a week off in New Jersey / Philly area, and so we couldn't attend this fund raiser...

Then, the following Friday night, August 24th, was the start of the Film Festival, which runs for five consecutive Friday nights, as seen at this link:  Flyer for the 2012 Season.  The cost for each of these Friday nights is 'Free'!

For those of you that haven't attended any of the previous seven seasons... Here's the master link to my review blogs on what the film festival is like:   Master Link.

In addition, I've uploaded a video so you can see what to bring to these evening:  Leo Carrillo Film Festival video 2nd Night of the 2011 Festival.

Tina and I are expecting to attend this 8th Season on the 2nd night, as I have called in for reservations at 760-476-1042, which I suggest you do so also before Friday!

Friday night's film is from 1943 and titled 'Follow The Band'.  Here is the link to the IMDb page for the film.  Others appearing in the film besides Leo Carrillo are: Eddie Quillan, Mary Beth Hughes, Leon Errol, and Anne Rooney, among others.

While I'm posting links... Don't forget to 'Like' the Leo Carrillo Ranch Historic Park Facebook Fan Page!

Also, Leo Carrillo was 'Pancho' in the 'Cisco Kid' western TV show. I mention this because one of the half hour Cisco Kid episodes is shown before the featured film is shown.  Plus... Should we have any of those comics or other westerns comic books, they would be listed here for sale!

~ Michael

UPDATE:  10:38 AM Wednesday - Just had a call back from the Leo Carrillo Historic Park office.  This Friday is booked up and so is next Friday, September 7th!  There are a few reservations left for September 14th & September 21st... So make your reservations now!

TODAY'S FEATURE IS BLOG #3703 -   Yesterday, I blogged about the 'Read Comics In public Day' event that I attended in the Claremont neighborhood of San Diego, California, on Saturday. (See blog #3702.)

The special day was started to take place on Jack Kirby's birthdate, which was on August 28th.  The 'Read Comics in Public' Day was started in 2010.

For those of you that don't know that much about Jack Kirby... Here is a link to the Wikipedia entry on Jack.  There is a lot of info and links to be found there, so I won't repeat them here.

The web site for this special day has been re-directed to its Facebook fan page:   'Read Comics In Public'.  The group was started by Brian Heater and Sarah Morean back in 2010.

I urge you to take a look at the above links, and see what is happening today, August 28th, in your area, so you too can celebrate the 'Read Comics in Public' Day, and celebrate Jack Kirby's birthday as well!
