Michael D Hamersky On Comics Presents His Take On The September 23rd Planning Meeting For:
 alt=

TODAY'S FEATURE IS BLOG #3723 -   Once again, Vinnie and I raced down to San Diego after noontime yesterday, Sunday the 23rd, right after church services.

That's because it was time for another meeting of the planners of the San Diego Comic Fest!  This time it was held once again at Ron and Val Ontell's house in the Tierrasanta area of San Diego.

Mike Towry, founder of this brand new revival fest, held the meeting, and there were 18 of us attending it.

I'll share just a few of the items that were covered at the meeting:

First, I took a few photos of the meeting.   My photos will be uploaded at this special photo album at my Facebook fan page.

As of this past weekend, it is less than 4 weeks away before the start of the first San Diego Comic Fest!

For those of you from out of town, you can also stay at the Town and Country Resort at our San Diego Comic Fest rate! Be sure to use that link to get the San Diego Comic Fest booking rate!

Volunteers are still needed!   Here is the new 'Volunteers' tab at the San Diego Comic Fest web site, so you can click on it.

The Artists Alley at the Comic Fest is being placed in a special room... In the Le Sommet room.  Be sure to contact the Comic Fest if you are interested in a spot!

Ed Cormier brought to our attention that Barry McGuire, ('Eve of Destruction' song and many others), will be playing at the Comic Fest!   To keep track of the Cafe Frankenstein aspect of this Comic Fest, be sure to check out the Facebook event page:  San Diego Comic Fest - Cafe Frankenstein Revival!

The upcoming article about the San Diego Comic Fest in THE READER will be out soon!

The Art Show was discussed... There will be art displayed, but no silent auction.  So this is really an 'Art Exhibit', not an 'Art Show'.  To be held in the Windsor Rose room!

There will be more 'Countdown' videos soon... The YouTube Channel from the San Diego Comic Fest can be found at:  SanDiegoComicFest.

The Souvenir Book from the Comic Fest... With Scott Shaw! doing the cover is on track.  Several articles to be included!

The Blood Drive is projected to be happening at the Comic Fest... Probably on Sunday!

Registration for dealers in the dealer room will be on Thursday during setup time.

Registration for the public.  The 'Ascot' room is where registration will be located, starting Friday morning.

Public hours for attendees are still being worked out.  So are the panels / programs schedules.

Disabled Services... There will be a liasion set up for this.

Phil Tippett (movie director), and Joanna Cassidy (of Blade Runner fame), are new guests that will be added to the web site this week.   Plus possibly a 'special guest' from Baltimore area... if his team doesn't make it all the way through the playoffs!

Oh... For photos that I took of the September 9th meeting and of the Town and Country Resort area that the San Diego Comic Fest will be at, please see this special photo album.

That's it for this past weekend's meeting...

Be sure to 'Like' the Facebook Fan Page for the San Diego Comic Fest!  It's coming up very soon... October 19th through the 21st!

Oh, and also click the 'Attending' link at the Facebook Event Page!  Be sure to buy your membership online soon, as the total attendance for this convention is just 1,000 total attendees!

~ Michael

Michael D Hamersky On Comics Presents His Take On The Final Night Of The:

2012 Leo Carrillo Film Festival in Carlsbad, California!

TODAY'S FEATURE IS BLOG #3722 -   Last night, Tina and I attended the Final Night of the 2012 Leo Carrillo Film Festival for 2012...!

I'm sharing a few photos from the event here, and the rest will be uploaded to the special album, Leo Carrillo Film Festival September 21st of 2012.

BTW... The 2012 Leo Carrillo Film Festival started this past August 17th... With a Special Presentation:  Dinner & A Movie!  As seen in this flyer:  Dinner And A Movie.  Tickets were reserved for only 150 attendees, with a cost of only $30 each person.

Then, the following Friday night, August 24th, was the start of the Film Festival, which ran for five consecutive Friday nights, as seen at this link:  Flyer for the 2012 Season.  The cost for each of these Friday nights was 'Free'!

For those of you that haven't attended any of the previous seven seasons... Here's the master link to my review blogs on what the earlier film festivals were like:   Master Link.

In addition, I've uploaded a video so you can see what to bring to these evenings:  Leo Carrillo Film Festival video 2nd Night of the 2011 Festival.

Okay... Back to last night!

First, we arrived early enough to have dinner in the park!  We brought our own, although there were hot dogs and other goodies at the pool shack.  See the top right photos for the menu and service location.

We each took turns walking the house buildings to see what was new since our last visit.  Those photos are in the special album link.

Then when it was sunset, we saw an episode of 'The Cisco Kid', in which Leo played 'Pancho'.  After that was a trivia contest, where some nice prizes were awarded.  I will be uploading a couple of videos from this period of time at my YouTube Channel in the near future.

Then came the feature presentation from 1933... 'Moonlight and Pretzels'!

An 83 minutes film, in black & white, it went well as the final film for the six night festival!

The film, is identified in the IMDb web site, and also in the Wikipedia web site.

Tina laughed at the film's ending, as it was so crazy... and I... Well I enjoyed the film, as it was a Depression 'period piece'.  Some really nice songs and scenes, in my opinion.  Although a little 'dated', heck it's almost 80 years old!, it was a good viewing outside under the stars.

A good way to end the 2012 Leo Carrillo Film Festival!

So, I want to say, don't forget to post on your calendar, that the 2013 Leo Carrillo Film Festival will start next August.... You have to have called in earlier to reserve the number of tickets for your party for each Friday night, which is a new procedure that was started this season!

Oh... And don't forget to 'Like' the Leo Carrillo Ranch Historic Park Facebook Fan Page!

BTW, Leo Carrillo was 'Pancho' in the 'Cisco Kid' western TV show... Should we have any of those comics or other westerns comic books, they would be listed here for sale!

My thanks to all of those staff members and volunteers that worked the 2012 Film Season!

~ Michael

My Take On: Expiration Date - Issues #1 - 2

Michael D Hamersky On Comics Presents His Take On:

Expiration Date #1-2

by Robert Zappia / Lee Wiley
As Seen At ComiKaze Expo
On September 15

 alt=

TODAY'S FEATURE IS BLOG #3721 -   I found Lee Wiley's table at the recent 2012 Stan Lee's ComiKaze Expo.  There I found the first two issues of his and Robert Zappia's graphic novel series, 'Expiration Date'.

Here's what the graphic novel, (comic book series), is about, per their promo:

“Our ability to achieve near immortality through the eradication of all disease and the cloning of human organs has bred an entirely new threat to the survival of mankind. Overpopulation has brought the human race to the brink of near extinction. Now, more than ever, a program of governed population control must be considered. It is time we realized it is not the quantity of our life that matters, but the quality of it.”

"It is the year 2496 and the population of the United States has reached 8.6 billion. Every human being, by law, is implanted with an SY-9 chip. This chip controls overpopulation by activating at random and “expiring” the host. In so many words, it kills them. One day, a rising politician vows to end the reign of the SY-9 chips, but then sadly “expires” on the brink of his popularity. The investigation of his death begins to unravel a dark and devious conspiracy. This is the world of Expiration Date."

Okay... So that is how this graphic novel series starts... So far there are two comics in this series.  I've read both issues printed so far.

The first issue was published via a KickStarter program.  So there was enough interest in this series to generate reaching the KickStarter goal.

Also, you might think that with the year being 2496 that this is just another dystopian future story... Well, it isn't.  There was enough storyline by Robert in the first issue to get me interested into reading the 2nd issue right away!

Additionally, the artwork by Lee is colored in all blue hues... Which had a strange effect on my reading these two issues!  It does give the storyline a 'darker' image, yet also makes it more intriguing to follow.

The binding is different also.  It almost looks like a comic book series, but is the size of a small magazine in its format.  Kind of an unusual print job...

I found the two issues to be of such a good quality of read, that I placed them near the top of my 'To Blog Stack'.  My Thanks to Lee Wiley who is shown at the top right of this blog post.

I give this 'comic book' / graphic novel series of two issues that I have read so far a comic book grade of a Very Fine / Near Mint (VF/NM) 9.0 out of a possible 10.0 comic book grading scale!

Here's the link to where you can order your copies: Expiration Date.

Michael D Hamersky On Comics Presents His Take On:

Burger Force #1-3

 by Jackie Ryan of
Burger Force Comics
As Seen At ComiKaze Expo
On September 15

 alt=

TODAY'S FEATURE IS BLOG #3720 -   I found Jackie Ryan's table at the recent 2012 Stan Lee's ComiKaze Expo.

There I found her comic book series, and was interested enough in what I saw to film a video of me interviewing Jackie, which is shown below:

Here's what the comic book is about, per her promo:

Having trouble with that pesky threat to civilization? Diabolical masterminds getting you down? Relax and turn up the theme music. The agents at your local takeaway are already on the case.

In a secret facility located beneath the Burger Berserker takeaway, undercover operatives set aside thick shakes and fries to thwart assain line-dancers, nefarious dating agency schemes, and cock-rockers gone (even more) wrong.

Into this strange world wanders the even stranger Mercury, a hapless young man with an unusual and unwanted talent, the burger team is tasked with discovering whether Mercury can help save the world as they know it, or if that world needs saving from Mercury!

So far there are twelve comics in this series.  I've read issues #1 - 3.

For a short video from this series that Jackie has produced, take a look at this link.

Okay, back?

I'm not going to do my usual 'review' of front cover, inside front cover, splash page, interior pages, etc....

Instead, I'm going to say that the three 'episodes' that I read were like storyboards / filmed scenes from 'Burger Force'.   The front covers are in color, while the interior pages are black & white.

The whole three issues I read are like scenes from a movie, which is probably why the series is twelve issues long (at this point).

The artwork is 'realistic' in nature.  The plotline is also 'realistic'.  Other than some Australian words like 'takeaway', the dialogue is very understandable.

This project's text was started in 1999.  Over the next ten years, Jackie has developed the comics / short films / etc. for 'Burger Force'.  The first 'shoot' was in December of 2008. The comic began to appear online in September of 2009.  There are other episodes that are being offered online.

I found these first three issues of the series to be really fascinating... and worth your taking a look!

I give this comic book series of three issues that I read a comic book grade of a Very Fine / Near Mint (VF/NM) 9.0 out of a possible 10.0 comic book grading scale!

Here's the link to where you can order your copies: Burger Force.

Here's the link to the Facebook Fan Page for Burger Force.

My Take On: Spadra #1 From Not Your Friend Comic Books

Michael D Hamersky On Comics Presents His Take On:

Spadra #1

 by Grasiela Rodriguez of
Not Your Friend Comic Books
As Seen At ComiKaze Expo
On September 15

 alt=

TODAY'S FEATURE IS BLOG #3719 -   Tina and I found Grasiela Rodriguez's table at the 2012 Stan Lee's ComiKaze Expo near the end of the day on Saturday, September 15th.

She had a table at the far South end of the large convention center hall, and it took some time to wind our way over there.

I'm glad we did find her... As the comic book she is holding in the photo above, 'Spadra', is one that I have already read, and placed at the top of the 'To Be Blogged' stack!

Here's what the comic book is about, per her promo:

Meet Billy Rubottom, the founder of Spadra and then take a ride with the Bride in the Stagecoach! Ghostly Appropriations Of A Town That Time Forgot.

Standard Comic, Full Color, Page Count: 16

I found that even though the page count was a little low in numbers, the quality of the presentation worked for me.  Interesting that there really was a town named 'Spadra' in the area of California!

The front cover was a pinup of Grasiela's unusual art, which I like. (See my review blog of her Lunatic Fringe #1).

The inside front cover had a scroll map of 'Early Spadra - 1837', which added visualization to the comic book.

The first story, 'El Muerto - The Headless Horseman of Elephant Hill' was portrayed very well in color and black & white.  The story was shown in a semi-pinup style, with only one or two panels per page.  Which in this story, I liked!

The second story, 'The Bride In The Stagecoach', was a four page story, yet there was a lot in those eight panels!

The inside back cover page was a text piece on 'Early Spadra'.  Good background info!

The back cover was the seal of the City of Spadra, and advertising info.

I gotta say... I give this comic book a comic book grade of a Near Mint (NM) 9.4 out of a possible 10.0 comic book grading scale!   It was nice seeing Grasiela again, this time at ComiKaze Expo, and seeing this newest published work of hers from 'Not Your Friend Comics'!

Here's the link to where you can order your copy:  Spadra.

(Here's the link to what else I found at Stan Lee's ComiKaze Expo.)
