Bruce Durham!

This entry in our 'Spotlight On...' blog post series is about ...

Bruce Durham, who sent a Facebook Friends request to me at the beginning of September.

As I do with everyone that either sends me a Friends request or accepts one that I send them, I check out the info and photos tabs on their Facebook wall to get to 'know' them a little better.

What I saw on Bruce's photo wall really got my interest, as he had attended the 'Howard Days' back in 2006!   For those that don't know which Howard, that would be THE Robert E Howard (REH), creator of such characters as Conan, King Kull, Solomon Kane and others!

I invited Bruce to send in a brief bio about himself, as I could see he had several interests and activities that he was doing that would make a good blog post. The following is what he submitted:

Hi, my name is Bruce Durham, or for those who frequent the Conan.com community forums, Crom’s Justiciar. I was born in Toronto, Ontario shortly before Hurricane Hazel and have spent the majority of my years in neighbouring Mississauga. Though I majored in film and television, it was before Toronto gained the moniker as Hollywood North. So, seeing as I predated the industry, I ended up in the cable TV business. For over 30 years.

In the 60’s I perused a selection of pocketbooks and came across a title with artwork that was, quite simply, stunning. The book was ‘Conan the Conqueror’, and the cover was by the legendary Frank Frazetta. From that moment on I was hooked, and anything that had the name Robert E. Howard attached, I bought. It was only later I came to understand the liberties that (Lancer) series editor L. Sprague de Camp had taken with Howard’s work, and it wasn’t until the Wandering Star and Del Rey editions appeared that I could read Howard as he was meant to be read.

In 2002 Conan Properties Inc. was acquired by Paradox Entertainment. In early 2003 they opened a website complete with community forums. At the time I was moderating another Paradox forum, and because of my knowledge of REH was asked to help out. After a short stint as a moderator, I was made Administrator. Over the years the forums have grown into a valuable resource on all things Howard, attracting scholars such as Rusty Burke, Mark Finn and Patrice Louinet. In addition to Howard’s writings there are forums covering the comics, frequented by various artists and writers, as well as debates over the films. Currently Michael J. Bassett and Paul Berrow, director and producer respectively of ‘Solomon Kane’, drop by to post updates. In addition, Berrow is keeping us posted on the new Bran Mak Morn movie. And it doesn’t stop there. We discuss the Hyborian Age, Rpgs and so on. The website can be found at http://www.conan.com

In my spare time I write, with over 20 stories published in various venues, as well as authoring an upcoming graphic novel. You can visit my website at: http://www.brucedurham.ca

So as you can see Bruce is a pretty busy guy!  You should check out the forums mentioned in the link above should you be interested in the Hyborian Age and other things Conan!

Bruce didn't mention that if You are on Facebook, You can find out more about what he is doing and also post input at his Facebook Comic Con | Bruce Durham creator table at:

http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=63716717402&ref=ts

My thanks to Bruce for taking the time to update me and this Blog's readers as to what he is currently doing, and where you can contact him further and also get into some lively discussions!

And... Thanks again to all of YOU reading our current and archived blog posts!  We do blog daily on comic book creators, comic book reviews, and other pop culture news and events including some TV shows and theatrical films!

James Pinard!

Above Photo: The Front Cover to the DARK TRINITY Project.   To the Left:  James Pinard @ the 2009 SDCC.

I met several creators at this year's San Diego Comic Con, or as they call it now:  Comic Con International: San Diego...

James Pinard was one of them, whom I had 'met' only via Facebook and the telephone prior to meeting him at the SDCC.  Due to time schedules and the fact that two programs Tina and I were interested in were overlapping; it turned out that Tina and James were going to the same comics marketing program.

So after introducing James to Tina, I read further on what James was working on.  I thought I would share that info with my blog readers today. First is the biography on James, and then the 'pitch' on one of his two current projects.  If you are an illustrator reading this blog post, you might want to check out the 'Dark Trinity' project pitch that James is in need of an illustrator to collaborate with!

JAMES PINARD

(Screenplays, Comic book/Graphic novel writer)
Currently working on Comic book scripts for “Dark Trinity,” and “Death by Devine.”

Biography:

I am a writer whose love for movies has lead me into the world of screenplay writing which I have been doing for many years now. In addition to writing screenplays, I have also written some poetry and short stories. I also maintain two websites, one for my comic and one for my other works. Sometime back I renewed my interest and passion for comic books and graphic novels. I will also be working on a short movie script based on one of my comics in the near future.

My current focus is on creating a series of comic books based on one of my screenplays called “DARK TRINITY.” The screenplay is registered with the WGA and the comic with the copyright office. I am also working on the comic script for a second story in the series set in the Forbidden City called “DEATH BY DIVINE.”

I am currently seeking an artist who I can collaborate with on either one of these comics. I would like this to be a true collaboration where we each have input on the other’s work.

Currently resides in: Orlando, FL.

For those of you that may be interested in collaborating with James on either of his two projects, here is more on Dark Trinity, which I have seen a little more of:

“Dark Trinity” is a graphic novel that entertains you as an action packed ultra-violent thriller set in our world of the future. The Story will draw you in and make you think, because it could be true…

Set in the “Forbidden City,” an ultra-violent futuristic city, where Demons hide in human form by day and change into their true demonic form at night to hunt humans from the shadows.

As a boy, Micheal our hero, is an angel in human form. He watched as Demons who were sent to kill him, murdered his parents. He didn’t know that he was sent to defend the world from Demons who were poised to plunge the world into a dark and dangerous place. After his parent’s death Father Aragon, Michael’s protector, knew of Michael’s special abilities and sent him out of the city and into hiding where he would be safe and could develop his “gifts.” He knew Michael’s true destiny.

Michael returns years later as a man to find Sara, the childhood friend he left behind, who is also an Angel, sent to help him on a journey of discovery. A journey that will ultimately lead him to find others of his kind and the secret to his powers, all the while being hunted by Demons, who know he has returned.

Luther, his adversary and leader of the “Blade Heads,” the gang of Demons that hold the city in fear, will stop at nothing to kill Michael before he can uncover the truth. A great secret that will reveal the importance of the human race, who are the real key to stopping Luther. This secret will ultimately change the world and our reality as we know it forever…

This ends my blog's 'Spotlight on James Pinard' post...my thanks to James for meeting up with me at the SDCCI, as it was harder than ever to meet people there this year due to all the program scheduling conflicts, and long lines to get in!

William Messner-Loebs

I just became Facebook Friends this weekend with Dan Merritt, the co-owner of the Green Brain Local Comic Book Store (LCBS) in Dearborn, Michigan...

When I asked if he had any upcoming events that would be of interest to my Blog readers, (like I ask of all my newest Facebook Friends), he replied with the following press release.  I am basically running it verbatim, since it is happening Wednesday of this week, for a good cause, and because of who the special guest at the LCBS will be:

VETERAN COMIC WRITER APPEARS FOR HEROIC CAUSE
WILLIAM MESSNER-LOEBS COMES TO DEARBORN TO SIGN BENEFIT COMIC BOOK.

On Wednesday, August 12th Green Brain Comics welcomes veteran comic writer William Messner-Loebs for a book signing to celebrate the release of Hero Comics: A Hero Initiative Benefit Book.

William Messner-Loebs or Bill to his pals, is a Michigander and a veteran comic writer and artist with an impressive resume of past projects. Perhaps best known for his run as writer on Wonder Woman, his work also includes a long stint on Flash for DC Comics and a short run on Thor for Marvel Comics. Mr Loebs has worked with artist Sam Keith on The Maxx for Image and a critically acclaimed graphic novel entitled Epicurus the Sage. He is also known for his work as an artist on his creator owned series Journey: The Adventures of Wolverine MacAlistaire.

Loebs' has overcome many obstacles. He was born with a cancerous tumor on his right arm, which had to be amputated when he was still an infant. In recent years, he has been in a car accident, lost his house and gone through long periods without work. As a freelancer, Bill has never had real job security or the benefits that would provide. Recently he and his wife Nadine have received crucial help from an organization called Hero Initiative.

The Hero Initiative is the first-ever federally chartered not-for-profit corporation dedicated strictly to helping comic book creators in need. Hero creates a financial safety net for yesterday's creators who may need emergency medical aid, financial support for the essentials of life, and an avenue back into paying work. It's a chance for all of us to give back something to the people who have given us so much enjoyment.

Hero Comics: A Hero Initiative Benefit Book features new work from Loebs. It will also feature two covers, Eve by J. Scott Campbell, and Grendel by Matt Wagner and all-new content including an original American Flagg! story by Howard Chaykin, and original stories by Gene Ha, Bill Willingham, David Lloyd, and Kaare Andrews.

The signing is on August 12th from 5 to 8pm followed immediately by a comic jam, where the public is invited to participate in creating improvised comic pages with other local artists.

Green Brain Comics is located at 13210 Michigan Avenue in East Downtown Dearborn. For more info call 313-582-9444 or check out www.greenbrain.biz

Note - For those not aware of William Messner-Loebs's background in comic books:

He is the creator of JOURNEY - the Adventures of Wolverine MacAlistaire, BLISS ALLEY - Alchemy at Street-Level, EPICURUS THE SAGE and The Bunny of Death. He has written Jonny Quest, Flash, Batman, Dr. Fate, Atom, Wonder Woman, Superman, Jaguar, Thor, Mr. Monster, The Maxx and Spiderman. His awards include: The INKPOT, the GLAAD award and this year RUE MORGUE magazine declared his book, THE NECRONOMICON, best horror comic of the year. He lives in Livingston County, Michigan with his wife Nadine and several fungi from Yith.

Note - More on The Hero Initiative:

The Hero Initiative is the first-ever federally chartered not-for-profit corporation dedicated strictly to helping comic book creators in need. Hero creates a financial safety net for yesterdays' creators who may need emergency medical aid, financial support for essentials of life, and an avenue back into paying work. It's a chance for all of us to give back something to the people who have given us so much enjoyment. Since inception, the Hero Initiative has been fortunate enough to benefit over 40 creators and their families with over $400,000 worth of much-needed aid, fueled by your contributions! It's a chance for all of us to give back something to the people who have given us so much enjoyment.   http://heroinitiative.org/

I want to thank Dan for bringing this to my attention yesterday morning!  Today's Blog is the earliest I could run this post; sorry for the short notice... but I wanted our Blog readers in the Detroit area to know about this if they already didn't!

Michael & Tina @ 2002 SDCC!

Earlier today my Facebook Friend Paul Kupperberg posted on his Facebook Wall a photo of himself using Captain America's shield from his personal collection as a prop in his salute to this Special Day...

I wanted to share that photo with those blog readers of ours that couldn't see that photo for themselves on Paul's Facebook photo album.

For those that are not totally familiar with Paul Kupperburg's credits as a writer... Paul is an author of novels, short stories, more than a dozen YA non-fiction books for Rosen Publishing and Chelsea House on topics ranging from history and science to biography and popular culture. Plus as a writer for DC Comics, Marvel, Fleetway (U.K.), Germany (Ehapa), Charlton Comics and others, more than 600 comic book stories, including Superman, Superboy, Batman, Green Lantern, Conan, Captain America, Judge Dredd, and many others.  Plus Paul created the titles Arion Lord of Atlantis, Checkmate!, and Takion.  Whew... And that's Not listing what's he's done lately!

Anyways, Kudos to Paul in his unique way of saluting the Legacy of Captain America for our Armed Forces this 4th of July Weekend!

For those of You that would like to see what Paul is up to, just check out his blog at:  http://www.kupperberg.blogspot.com

Also, to the right of Paul's photo is a smaller inset photo of Michael and Tina 'in a G.I. Joe action figure combo pak' taken at the 2002 SDCC (San Diego Comic Con International).

That is our little tribute to the Armed Forces serving today overseas!  Even though Michael grew up as a 'Navy Brat', he couldn't find a Captain Storm - PT Boat Skipper action figure to be encapsulated in! So GI Joe is our photo salute!!

Hope You All have a Safe and Sane 4th of July Weekend!

BTW, we aren't shooting off any fireworks here at Make It So Marketing's Blog, (LOL), but we do blog daily on comics and pop culture news and events!  Check out our daily blog posts, new listings of comics, graphic novels, Comic Con exclusives and more pop culture items for sale in our online eBay Featured Store

Thanks again to all of YOU reading our current and archived blog posts!!
