Michael D Hamersky On Comics Presents His Take On:

Fat Jack's Comicrypt
At Oaklyn, New Jersey!

TODAY'S FEATURE IS BLOG #3705 -   As stated in last week's blogs... We are back from a Summer Vacation visiting Tina's family in South New Jersey!

While there we both took in a tour of a few LCBS (Local Comic Book Shops) in the South New Jersey area, plus the Philadelphia Comic-Con that took place on Sunday, August 19th at the Ramada Philadelphia Airport in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.  Last Thursday's blog, #3700, was the review blog on the Comic-Con.

Today's blog is a review blog on the third of the LCBS that we saw in South New Jersey.

That would be 'Fat Jack's Comicrypt' at 521 White Horse Pike, in Oaklyn, NJ.

The top middle photo above this text is myself, at the front window of this LCBS.

The third photo, (at the top right), is a photo of the LCBS's frontage on White Horse Pike.

I found that the location of this LCBS was easy to find, even though the width of the shop was a little small.

As stated, the exterior frontage of this LCBS was a little small, but when opening the door, I could see that it was shaped in a long rectangular size, and was deeper in depth than I expected from seeing the frontage!

There were a couple of female customers in the shop when we arrived, and shop manager Brian Rappa, was serving them.

While I checked out the LCBS and took photos, (which can be seen in this special photo album at my Facebook fan page), Tina started checking out the back issue bins.

Brian declined to be photographed for the photo album, but was well versed in comics history.  His knowledge of comics and his well stocked back issue bins make this LCBS a good place to fill in holes in comic book runs, IMO, if you live close to Oaklyn.

I found a few back issue magazines that I hadn't seen before and picked those up for myself while we were there.

My thanks to Brian Rappa for showing me around this LCBS during our trip to South New Jersey!

Here is the web site link for Fat Jack's Comicrypt, which has its main LCBS in Philadelphia, PA.

Here is the link to the Facebook fan page for Fat Jack's Comicrypt.

Plus again, here is the link to the special photo album at my Facbook Fan Page that I shot during this part of our trip.

BTW, I should mention, and will now... That this LCBS in New Jersey is home to approximately five cats, which frequent the insides of the shop.  So those of you that are allergic to cats, please be advised.

~ Michael

Michael D Hamersky On Comics Suggesting Your Taking In...

The Friday, August 31st of 2012 Leo Carrillo Film Festival in Carlsbad, California!
 alt=

TODAY'S FEATURE IS BLOG #3704 -   I previously posted that the 2012 Leo Carrillo Film Festival was starting on August 17th, (in blog #3696), with a Special Presentation:  Dinner & A Movie!  As seen in this flyer:  Dinner And A Movie.  Tickets were reserved for only 150 attendees, with a cost of only $30 each person.

Unfortunately, Tina and I had a week off in New Jersey / Philly area, and so we couldn't attend this fund raiser...

Then, the following Friday night, August 24th, was the start of the Film Festival, which runs for five consecutive Friday nights, as seen at this link:  Flyer for the 2012 Season.  The cost for each of these Friday nights is 'Free'!

For those of you that haven't attended any of the previous seven seasons... Here's the master link to my review blogs on what the film festival is like:   Master Link.

In addition, I've uploaded a video so you can see what to bring to these evening:  Leo Carrillo Film Festival video 2nd Night of the 2011 Festival.

Tina and I are expecting to attend this 8th Season on the 2nd night, as I have called in for reservations at 760-476-1042, which I suggest you do so also before Friday!

Friday night's film is from 1943 and titled 'Follow The Band'.  Here is the link to the IMDb page for the film.  Others appearing in the film besides Leo Carrillo are: Eddie Quillan, Mary Beth Hughes, Leon Errol, and Anne Rooney, among others.

While I'm posting links... Don't forget to 'Like' the Leo Carrillo Ranch Historic Park Facebook Fan Page!

Also, Leo Carrillo was 'Pancho' in the 'Cisco Kid' western TV show. I mention this because one of the half hour Cisco Kid episodes is shown before the featured film is shown.  Plus... Should we have any of those comics or other westerns comic books, they would be listed here for sale!

~ Michael

UPDATE:  10:38 AM Wednesday - Just had a call back from the Leo Carrillo Historic Park office.  This Friday is booked up and so is next Friday, September 7th!  There are a few reservations left for September 14th & September 21st... So make your reservations now!

TODAY'S FEATURE IS BLOG #3703 -   Yesterday, I blogged about the 'Read Comics In public Day' event that I attended in the Claremont neighborhood of San Diego, California, on Saturday. (See blog #3702.)

The special day was started to take place on Jack Kirby's birthdate, which was on August 28th.  The 'Read Comics in Public' Day was started in 2010.

For those of you that don't know that much about Jack Kirby... Here is a link to the Wikipedia entry on Jack.  There is a lot of info and links to be found there, so I won't repeat them here.

The web site for this special day has been re-directed to its Facebook fan page:   'Read Comics In Public'.  The group was started by Brian Heater and Sarah Morean back in 2010.

I urge you to take a look at the above links, and see what is happening today, August 28th, in your area, so you too can celebrate the 'Read Comics in Public' Day, and celebrate Jack Kirby's birthday as well!

~ Michael

Michael D Hamersky On Comics Presents His Take On:

Read A Comic Book In Public Day
At Claremont, San Diego, California!

TODAY'S FEATURE IS BLOG #3702 -   Yesterday, Vinnie and I attended the 3rd Annual 'Read Comics in Public Day' event that was held in the Claremont neighborhood of San Diego, California.

The middle photo above shows me reading a copy of 'The Comic Book History of Comics' by Fred Van Lente and Ryan Dunlavey, which I found to be fascinating!

The larger photo to the right shows those that had shown up early in the morning, outside of the Starbucks on Genessee and Balboa Avenue.

This local event was once again hosted by Chriss Cornish, who has been holding this since 2010 at the same location.

This event is just one of many events that was inspired by the main 'Read Comics In Public' group started by Brian Heater and Sarah Morean back in 2010.  I urge you to take a look at their link, and see what is happening tomorrow, August 28th in your area, so you too can celebrate the 'Read Comics in Public' Day!

Chriss Cornish elected to hold the San Diego event on this past Sunday.  The event page for the San Diego event is at:  Read Comics In Public Day - San Diego.

Chriss' main Facebook page has just been started at:  San Diego Reads Comics In Public, which I urge you to 'Like'!

Photos that Vinnie and I took of the couple of hours we attended the San Diego event can be seen at my Facebook Fan Page in the special photo album titled:  2012 Read Comics In Public Day.

(Vinnie and I would have stayed longer at this event, but I had a meeting of the San Diego Comic Fest to attend that ran during the later hours of this event.  I'll be posting on that later, either here, at my Facebook fan page, and / or the Facebook fan page for the San Diego Comic Fest.)

My thanks once again to Chriss Cornish, who held this 2012 event.  I urge you to 'Like' her Facebook fan page, and to check out whatever is being held in your area on Tuesday, August 28th!

~ Michael

The Comic Station

Today's blog is a review blog on the first of the LCBS that we saw in South New Jersey.

That would be 'The Comic Station' at 615 Station Avenue, Haddon Heights, NJ.

The top middle photo above is myself, at the front of the LCBS.

The third photo, (at the top right), are the co-owners of the LCBS, Mike and Scott Kaitz at the sales counter.

I found that the location of this LCBS was right across the street from the Haddon Heights Library, and also close to other main buildings in the town.  Indeed, 'The Comic Station' was centrally located on the two blocks that comprised the town!

The exterior of the LCBS was a little small, but when opening the door, I could see that it was a long rectangular size, and was deeper in depth than I expected!

I also found that the front of the shop had the current comics and a good selection of toys. Behind the sales counter to the left, was a door to another room with a lot of backstock of comics!  Tina picked up a couple of back issues of 'Fringe' that she had not yet read, while I talked with Scott about the LCBS.

Mike was in the far back of the shop, and stopped long enough to also talk with me.  Plus he posed for a couple of pics, that I'm sharing here and at the special photo album hosted at my Facebook Fan Page, 'Michael D Hamersky on Comics'.

I found that this was a well stocked LCBS, and that those of you near the Haddon Heights area of New Jersey should stop in and check this shop out!

My thanks to Scott & Mike for showing me around their LCBS during our trip to South New Jersey!

Here is the web site link for 'The Comic Station'.

Here is the link to their Facebook fan page for 'The Comic Station'.

Plus again, here is the link to the photos of this LCBS at my Facbook Fan Page that I shot during this part of our trip.
