Marvel's Greatest Battles?!
Mood:  d'oh
Topic: Comic Book History

Marvel's Greatest Battles?!

There are so many different ways that phrase could be explained by fans and non-fans alike...

One early explanation would be when Marvel Comics took on National DC Comics when it proclaimed the 1st Issue of the Fantastic Four as 'The World's Greatest Comic Magazine!'  way back in 1961!

Another would be when Marvel Comics expanded its' newstand distribution in 1968, when it had its' titles, Strange Tales, Tales of Suspense, and Tales To Astonish split into two separate titles, with each of the main superheroes heading their own title.

Some of those superheroes like the Incredible Hulk, Iron Man and Captain America went on for years... Others like Dr Strange and the Sub-Mariner have had their ups and downs in being published!

For later readers and / or investors, the battles within Marvel itself caused the implosion of the company, which found itself battling to get out of bankruptcy.

The newest battles are the successes finally of Marvel Superheroes on the Big Screen! Earlier the Captain America, the Punisher, the 1st Fantastic Four movie by Corman, etc., just were outclassed by the Superman and Batman movies by DC's efforts...

What brought this blog post about was my going through my personal collection of Marvel items and running across the book 'Marvel's Greatest Battles', which of course would feature the Incredible Hulk versus the Thing for one!

My love for this comic book industry's history is a large one, encompassing my earliest day's of reading Chilly Willy, Disney Comics, etc., but some like Fantastic Four #12 & #25 where the Hulk and the Thing tangled with each other will never be equaled in my humble opinion.

Were those really 'Marvel's Greatest Battles'???  I suppose it depends on when you first started reading Marvel Comics!

It is widely thought that a comic book reader's own personal 'Golden Age' is at 13 years of age... which would put me around 1965, when Stan Lee, Jack Kirby, Steve Ditko, Don Heck, Larry Lieber and many others were laying the Foundation for what Marvel Comics has become to be know for!

Kevin Smith AND...
Mood:  a-ok
Topic: Comic Book History

Stan

'The Man'

Lee!

Regular blog readers will know of my fondness for Stan Lee.

Tina enjoys most of Kevin Smith's works.

She has also met Stan, and sat by him at the Stan Lee Auction at the SDCC when his personal accumulation of items were auctioned off several years ago. She even suggested he sign the pinball machine that was sold during that auction. The machine had been in his Hollywood office for many years.

We just picked up a couple of VHS tapes of the 'Stan Lee's Mutants, Monsters & Marvels' that Stan and Kevin worked on together. I already have a copy of it for my personal collection and wanted to bring these to your attention.

It is a 2-tape set. The first is 'Creating Spider-Man' and the second tape is 'Here Come The Heroes'.

I just can't seem to get enough of Stan Lee... I listen to his programs at Cons, on tape, on DVD, etc. etc.... After all he has been around since I was a young impressionable kid!

I could have done a lot worse in hero worship!  'Nuff Said!

I Want to Believe!

I Want to Believe!

Our old friends Mulder and Scully come
to a theater near you on July 25, 2008 and I for one, can't wait.  If you haven't seen the trailer yet, check it out online at the official  X-Files  site.  (Sorry I can't give you the link - it's off eBay.) Click on the teaser trailer - it'll get your heart racing.

Just hearing the opening theme music takes me back to sitting home on a Friday night eagering anticipating having the crap scared out of me.  In fact, after the "Worm Man" and that guy who crawled through electrical sockets, I couldn't watch the show unless I had other adult supervision.

Twentieth Century Fox will only say that the story takes place in present time six years after the end of the television show, and it doesn't involve aliens. The movie will be a stand-alone super-natural thriller similar to the creepy scary episodes we loved from the tv series.

If the movie fulfills the promise of the trailer, we're in for an exciting and satisfying time. Setting the action in the frozen north is genius.  Immediately, the characters are isolated in an eerie setting - it instantly ratches up the tension.

And speaking of tension, Mulder says, "I need you on this with me, Scully."  You need her - no kidding!

And, we need Mulder and Scully back!

Meanwhile, if you can't wait for  X-Files The Movie and you need to have the crap scared out of you, check out these classic Horror comics:  'Dark Mansion', 'Ghost Stories', 'Dracula', and 'Frankenstein', oh my!

We have an ongoing Comic Con and Pop Culture  convention here at Make It So Marketing, what with our daily blog posts and listings of items for sale!

Thanks for reading this popular culture - comics - comic books blog post and please come back to visit us again!

It Was The Last Day In Vietnam...

It Was The

Last Day In Vietnam!

Last night Tina listed about three dozen more 'The 'Nam Comics' in our eBay Featured Store.

While she was doing so she asked me if they had any connection to the Graphic Novel by Will Eisner that was also listed in the store.

She recognized that Will Eisner also had 'The Spirit' newspaper strip and comic book series, which is being transformed into an upcoming comic book movie.

I informed her that no, the Marvel Comics of 'The 'Nam' didn't have anything to do with the Will Eisner Graphic Novel, other than the settings were in the country of Vietnam.

I also told her that there have actually been several comic book series on the War in Vietnam, and that the Marvel Comics series was the easier one to collect and / or read.

BTW, we both are showing some interest in the upcoming 'The Spirit' film which is being directed by Frank Miller.

The addition of Samuel L Jackson as the villain 'The Octupus' is a great addition to drawing more attention to this production!

We'll be sure to blog more on the film, but wanted today to bring to your attention a good read on this inexpensive Marvel Comics book series, and an interesting and recommended Graphic Novel by Will Eisner!

We have an ongoing Comic Con  and pop culture convention here at Make It So Marketing, what with our daily blog posts and listings of items for sale! Please join us again for more!
