I want to thank each of those that participated in this series of blog posts this month... it was fun for me to do!  Looking forward to seeing All of You at the Con, as well as many others that are exhibiting or signing there also!  There are of course others that are deserving to be mentioned, but time and space limitations are keeping me from including everyone that is deserving of a mention at this time!

I do blog about other cons so keep me in mind if You are a creator and attending a different con later for possible mention in my Blog!

BTW, The Comic-Con is celebrating its' 40th Anniversary!  As I have mentioned in previous blog posts, I attended the first con, missed the second, but started selling at the third con while going to college.

The 3rd San Diego's West Coast Comic-Con, (renamed), was held August 18-20th, 1972 at the El Cortez Hotel, (it was a Hotel in those days, not the Condos it is today). It was on the last day of the Con that I bought out a dealer's complete stock as he wanted to leave early, and sold comics from the table he had been selling from! It was a little impromptu, but I had the cash, and was a business major student in college; so this is how I entered into my first commercial enterprise! And I made a lot of money that day, plus had plenty of comics left over!

I set up my own table at the SDCC the following year in 1973, see picture above. Yes, that's me, 36 years ago, a young kid at having turned just 2l years of age the month before. The photo at the top right is one of the photos of me at the 1973 SDCC, which you can click on the photo to view full sized to see in detail the comics I was selling.  Notice how there weren't comic book boxes back then!

Great memories of the San Diego Comic Con; My personal favorite of all the Cons I've been to!  And I Love the idea of celebrating my own personal Birthday this year during this week at the 40th Anniversary of Comic Con!  Matter of fact, to remember this occasion,  I've already pre-ordered the special 40th Year commemorative book that the Con has ready for pick up at the Con this week!

BTW, if you are not one of the 125,000+ persons that are attending this great comic book and pop culture convention this month, then you could take a look at the Con's web site to see what else there is for this year:

http://www.comic-con.org/

However, if you are attending  the San Diego Comic Con International THIS WEEK, then please find and then hi-lite on your program map all of the above mentioned creators that I have blogged about that interest You.  You'll be glad You did, so that you don't miss them while you are there!

Please Note:  Days and Times of signings /programs / panels / doors opening etc., are subject to change at any convention, so double check that when you get there!  There is a daily updated printed schedule that is available onsite!

For those that don't know... the 2009 SDCC / CCI-SD is being held at the San Diego Convention Center in San Diego, California.

The address is: 111 W Harbor Dr, San Diego, CA.  Dates of the Con are from July 23rd through July 26th, with a Preview Night July 22nd for 4 day Badge Members Only!  However as this blog post 'goes to press' ALL memberships have been SOLD OUT already!

BTW, unless we are onsite all day & night during a comic con... we do blog daily on comics and pop culture news and events!  Check out our daily blog posts, new listings of comics, graphic novels, Comic Con exclusives and more pop culture items for sale in our online eBay Featured Store

See Paul Dale at Table HH-10 In Artists Alley!

Continuing My Series On Creators that will be at the Comic Con International San Diego 2009, AND whom I think You should make a point to stop and see...

Is Paul Dale, a.k.a Kapitan Kartoon, who will be in Artists Alley at table HH-10 for this year's SDCCI!

Paul is better known as an animator, with an extensive on-staff studio background.  However he has been attending the San Diego Comic Con International for many years.  Actually This Year will be his 20th Anniversary there... Congrats Paul!

As this blog post 'goes to press', Paul tells me that his publication 'The Children of Captain Nemo' is in the final stages of completion!  However he fears that it may arrive at the Con two days into the five day event...

I'm looking forward to seeing what he has on display even if the final product doesn't make it till a few days into the Con.

Paul also tells me:  "I will be drawing peoples caricatures at the con. I am the only American artist that draws caricatures in the ANIME style. I have done this for 12 years".

As a side note; this is Paul's first comic book work that he has created by himself.  I first saw this concept of his back in April of this year and had to blog about it then, as I thought it would make a really cool graphic novel!

BTW, if you are not one of the 125,000+ persons that are attending this great comic book & pop culture convention this month, then you could take a look at Paul's web site:   http://www.flickr.com/photos/kapitankartoon/sets

However, if you are attending  the San Diego Comic Con International later on this month, then please find and then hi-lite on your program map the area known as Artists Alley and check off table HH-10 for Paul Dale.  You'll be glad You did!  I know I have already added Paul on my list of creators to see at the Con!

PLUS: A Special Signing by Wayne McDuffie!

Continuing My Series On Creators that will be at the Comic Con International San Diego 2009, AND whom I think You should make a point to stop in at and see...

Are members of the collective known as 'The Antidote Trust', (TAT)!

Dale Wilson was kind enough to email me the collective's press release which is excerpted below:

"Starting this year, The Antidote Trust moves to booth #2806, directly across from Dark Horse Comics, and adjacent to Diamond Comics Distributors and McFarlane Toys.  “Although this is our third year exhibiting at Comic-Con, we almost feel that this is the first time fans will be able to spot us in the crowd,” says Dale Wilson, writer/creator of Caffeine Dreams and Butterfly Industrial 2.0.  “This new location – right by Entrances C & D – allows our followers and potential new readers to get close and really check out the myriad of comics and products that our creators develop.”

In addition, the group follows up last year’s standing-room only presentation with the 2nd annual Antidote Trust Panel, 7:00 – 8:00 pm on Thursday, July 23, in Room 5AB.  “The goal of our panel has always been to find others who are interested in creating their own properties and share with them the tricks of the trade we’ve picked up along the way,” says Robert Roach, Glyph Award-winning artist/creator of Menthu and The Roach.  “Basically, this is the panel we wish was around when we were starting out.  The fact that Comic-Con saw just how big out turnout was last year and supported our move to an even larger showroom makes us feel like we’re on to something.”

The Antidote Trust is also sponsoring several celebrity signings, including such comic book legends as Dwayne McDuffie, Tony DeZuniga, Ernie Chan, and other soon-to-be announced guests.  “This is our way of giving back to the folks who support independent comics and, at the same time, geeking out a bit ourselves,” admits Andre Owens, creator of Force Galaxia.  “It’s fun for guys like Dwayne [McDuffie] and Morrie Turner, who signed in 2007, since they can interact with their fans in a casual, open atmosphere, and it’s great for the fans since they don’t have to wait in a huge Marvel/DC line and can check out some cool indie books in the process.”

Notable Events at this year’s Comic-Con for the collective include:

The first 100 customers at The Antidote Trust booth #2806 will receive a free TAT Pack – a bundle of coupons, comic samplers, and other freebees.

The 2nd Annual Antidote Trust Panel, Thursday, July 23, 7:00 – 8:00 pm, Room 5AB

Dwayne McDuffie signings, Friday, July 24, 1:00 – 2:00 pm, Booth #2806, and Saturday, July 25, 1:00 – 2:00 pm, Booth #2806

About The Antidote Trust:
The Antidote Trust, an entertainment collective leveraging its combined resources to
benefit independent creators, has been extant since 2006.   This year’s Comic-Con presence will feature books, art, products, and signings from:  Dial “C” For Comics (Miserable Dastards, Return of the Super Pimps), DWAP Productions (Caffeine Dreams, Butterfly Industrial 2.0), Eyes On Hands On Entertainment (Soldiers of the Dead), Hiro Unlimited (Force Galaxia), Home Town Productions (Menthu, The Roach), Vince Moore, Ryan Archer (PrologueComics.com), Stranger Comics (Asunda, The Untamed), Studio Ronin (Silent Leaves, Soul Stealer), Sweatshop Media (HollyVOOD), and Tumble Creek Press (13), and featuring 2FB Productions (Dominion: Eulogy), Fantasy Art Comics (Fierce), and Khalid Birdsong (Banga)."

PLUS:   For those of You that have read this far... here's a SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT that wasn't in the Press Release!  Michael Easton, actor and writer, will also be at TAT's booth during the Con.  See the members at the booth for full details when you arrive there for Michael's appearance(s)!

BTW, if you are not one of the 125,000+ persons that are attending this great comic book & pop culture convention this month, then you could take a look at the TAT web site:  http://www.TheAntidoteTrust.com

However, if you are attending  the San Diego Comic Con International NEXT Week, then please find and then hi-lite on your program map the booth #2806 that TAT will be at during the Con!

See Leah Mangue at Table GG-17 In Artists Alley!

Continuing My Series On Creators that will be at the Comic Con International San Diego 2009, AND whom I think You should make a point to stop and see...

Is Leah Mangue, who will be in Artists Alley at table GG-17 for this year's SDCCI!

Leah is known as a self employed visual artist who works with colored pencils and markers. She covers a lot of art genres from fine art, comic art, to licensed work and pet portraiture.

As a licensed artist she has worked on: Lucasfilm's Star Wars 30th Anniversary, Clone Wars Movie, Indiana Jones Heritage, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, New Line Cinema's Lord of the Rings Masterpieces I & II, Heroes I & II, Indiana Jones Masterpieces, Star Wars Galaxy IV and more!

Leah sent me the following message regarding her con schedule and what she has on display for sale at the Con:

"I have an upcoming book, The White Album, which will be for sale at Comic Con. It is a collaborative effort by 13 artists who have created drawings inspired by the music of The Beatles. I, along with the other twelve, will all be present at Comic Con (at our respective tables) and will be signing/personalizing the books throughout the show. I have three pieces in the book and I now have only 40 books available.

Each person who purchases a book from me will also receive a Comic-Con exclusive bookmark featuring the three pieces I contributed.  The White Album is a very limited edition Comic Con exclusive with an 800 book run."

So what is this album about? Well here is the following from a press release:

Forty-five years ago, The Beatles invaded America, bringing with them a sound and attitude different from anything any of us had seen or heard before. They challenged and inspired us, forcing us to think about how things could be if we would only realize the importance of love.

Its now 2009. Although ts been nearly forty years since The Beatles broke up, and yet their message is as relevant and influential as ever. The greatest band in history is still inspiring hope and dreams, still changing lives and fostering creativity, still shaping the way we look, listen and think.

Announcing THE WHITE ALBUM: A Collection of Images Inspired by the Music of The Beatles.

Compiled and introduced by writer and illustrator Russell Walks, and showcasing work by artists including Leah Mangue, Matt Busch, and others, THE WHITE ALBUM presents an exciting array of dynamic, emotional works of art, each of has been inspired by a song from The Beatles extensive catalogue.

THE WHITE ALBUM looks at the work of The Beatles through a kaleidoscope of artistic styles and viewpoints. THE WHITE ALBUM will be available for the very first time ever this summer at the San Diego Comic-Con (July 22 -26, 2009). Dont miss your chance to pick up a copy at the only location where every artist will be available to personalize your book.

Participating Artists Include:

Spencer Brinkerhoff III, Matt Busch, TC Cor, Nicole Falk, Grant Gould, Gabe Hernandez
Paul Michael Kane, Leah Mangue, Meghan McMahon, Jeff Pittarelli, Jamie Snell, Russell Walks
John Watkins-Chow"

So Blog Readers... if you are interested in those limited numbers of this graphic novel, you gotta get there early!  You know how Comic Con Exclusives sell out!

First, for those that aren't familar with his work... here's Alan's self bio:  "Publishing software executive by day - Freelance Writer by night. I blame it all on Tom Swift, Stanley Kubrick and Adam West. In the space of a few short months in the late 60’s I borrowed “Tom Swift And The Cosmic Astronauts” from the local library, not longer after I watched “2001”; at the movies, and thanks to Adam West and the Batman TV show discovered comic books!"

Alan sent me his schedule of where he will be at the Con, whether signing, on panels, etc.:

Wednesday, July 22nd
6:00pm - 7:00pm - BOOM! Studios booth #2543 - signing.

2:00pm - 3:00pm - "The World of CARS" panel - Room 5AB

Please Note:  I have only read Alan's 'World of Cars' work so far that he has written.  Which is what most of his activities around this year's SDCCI is revolving around.

However, Alan will also  have his new book from Hermes Press launching - STAR TREK: A Comics History, which I'll take a look at during the Con because I do like Star Trek!  For those of you not attending the Con, I understand you can find details on this book on the Hermes Press website.

Alan will also be signing copies of "JAMES BOND: The History of the Illustrated 007" at the Hermes Press booth, which I have also not seen, but I'm sure my wife Tina will want to take a look at this as she is a bigger Bond fan than I!

BTW, if you are not one of the 125,000+ persons that are attending this great comic book & pop culture convention this month, then you could take a look at Alan's web site:  http://www.alanjporter.com

However, if you are attending  the San Diego Comic Con International NEXT Week, then please find and then hi-lite on your program map the locations that Alan will be at during different times of the Con!

CONVENTION TIP:  Always make sure that the creators You want to sign Your comics know how to spell your name, even if it is a 'common' name.  You wouldn't believe how many people mis-spell 'Michael' !  Either hold your Con Badge out with the correct spelling as a guide for whoever is signing, or have a card with a legibly written name you want the item signed to.  Below is Marie Severin who signed Michael's Fantastic Four Comics at the 2001 San Diego Comic Con International held at the Convention Center in San Diego, California.
