Michael Golden

Michael Golden has been mentioned as a guest at upcoming Cons in this Blog several times...   Which is great for fans of his works that want to meet him in person!  His next stop is in Orlando, Florida at the 2009 FX Show, which is billed as "The Coolest Show on Earth"!

The 'Show' may not be taking place under a 'Big Top', indeed it is inside at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, but as they say they sure are bringing out all 'Three Rings' of excitement this year at this Show!

How is that you say?  Well the FX Show has an expanded guest list, plus more celebrities, and the announcement of artist/creator Michael Golden as the "Special Guest of Honor"!

In addition to commemorate Michael's return to Florida, the FX Show is offering a limited Michael Golden G.I. JOE art print  poster for sale at the convention itself!  The 11" X 22" posters will be offered, at $15 each, and Michael will be on hand there to sign them all individually for each collector. However, be there early as that poster is limited to only 200 numbered prints!

For those of you that haven't read about Michael Golden here in my Blog before, Michael has "long been touted as one of the best storytellers in comics, influencing countless artists via his work on "The 'Nam," "Micronauts,"  "G.I. Joe Yearbook," "Batman," and  "Dr. Strange, " among much more! In addition, Golden is the co-creator of Rogue from the X-Men, "Bucky O'Hare," and "Spartan X," as well as other popular properties".

So what has had he done lately?  Well... "His recent work can be seen in the last few years with covers on "Nightwing," "Iron Man," "Heroes for Hire," "Exiles," "Demon's Regret" and just this month on "Uncanny X-Men."  In addition, Vanguard Productions recently released the top selling art retrospective "Excess: The Art of Michael Golden," which sold out and went into a second printing."!

BTW, for those of you that can't make this Show but are planning to attend the upcoming San Diego Comic Con Interntional (SDCC) in July 2009:  "This year will see the release of Michael's new sketchbook, "Dangerous Curves," from Eva Ink Publishing. A perfect match for last years sketchbook, "Heroes and Villains." The new volume is scheduled for debut at the San Diego Comic Con".

So you are tempted to stop in at the FX Show this upcoming weekend, but need something else to make you come for sure?

Well, other guests scheduled to join Michael Golden at the Orlando Convention Center include: Leonard Nimoy, Juliet Landau,  Jonathan Frakes, Mark Texeira, Matt Fraction, Arthur Suydam, Frank Brunner, Yaya Han, Eva Hopkins,  Dan Brereton, Billy Tucci, Chuck Dixon, Greg Horn, Dave Johnson, Doug Murray, Dave Nester, Phil Noto, Michael Oeming, Dan Panosian, Steve Rude,  Mark Goddard, James Kyson Lee,  Lindsay Wagner, Renee Witterstaetter, John Beatty, Tony Bedard, Jeremy Haun, Kathryn Immonen, Andy Kuhn, Laura Martin, Jose Marzan Jr, Pat Broderick, Marc Hammond, Amanda Stevens, and many more!

'FACTION'

Comic Book  Is Leading In The Early 2nd Round Of Small Press Idol 2009 As This Blog is Posted!

Click Here To See Our ENDING SOONEST Listings of Comics, Graphic Novels, Promo Comics and other Pop Culture items listed for sale!

Each day I receive messages...   From either contestants entered in the Small Press Idol 2009 contest, or from the Small Press Idol organizers.

Nah, I don't consider them spam messages... in fact I am quite interested in this, the second Small Press Idol, to tell you the truth!

There were 27 entries that have made it out of Round 1 and are now into Round 2.  Why does this matter and why am I blogging about it again?   Well, in Round 2 it is not only the 3 initial judges that are doing the voting... it is also registered persons, like YOU or me could be, that are voting in this round!

One of the early entries that caught my eyes was that of the 'Faction' comic book project.  The project members are Erik W Hendrix - Words (Writer and letters) of Oceanside, California and KT Gravatt - Pictures (pencils, inks, color, digital, etc)  of Chula Vista, CA.

The Small Press Idol 2009 has 4 rounds:

Round 1 is already over. It was to present the Basic Concept / Talent.

Round 2 ends on April 30th. It is more about showcasing the characters with illos and background text.

Round 3 goes from May 18th - June 7th.  It is on the 'sequential primers'.

Round 4 goes from July 15 - ??? It is the Origin or the #0 issue.

Below is the Basic Concept shown in Round 1 from the Faction Comic Book project:

The year is 2025. A burned, mutilated, shrapnel-filled, and left for dead Acker Kinney will awake in a hospital to find his life has changed forever.

The war on terror, in which he’s fought since the age of 18 as a medic in the Marines, has left this 43 year old man scarred and short both an arm and career after a roadside bomb took out his unit in the “Badlands” of the Middle East… but this is just the beginning.

Once, the concept of good and evil was as simple as which person was pointing the gun. When Acker is attacked by a demon’s minion in the hospital while recovering from his wounds, he is saved by a group of Knights from the Society of the Enlightened. Soon, he will find himself one of them, blessed with countless lifetimes of knowledge and rediscovered powers.

The Society, in an eternal conflict with the forces of Den Malignity, an assembly of powerful demons and their minions, must react when the participants on the battlefield grow.

Old factions, thought banished in the time of the dark ages, have risen again to claim their rightful place in the world. Which of these factions will side with the Society and which with the Den?

The answer will play out across the entire planet and shape its destiny. The schemes of gods, the desires of demons, the powers of nature, myth, and supernatural – all are setting forth to change a world long believed to be the sole dominion of man. This is the world the Society of the Enlightened and her Knights must protect. This is Faction.

Round 2 shows the characters from 'Faction'.  Sketches of the main character, Acker Kinney, are shown at the top of this blog post, along with a character outline.

For more on 'Faction' I invite you to check out their entry on the Small Idol Press web site.  After viewing their progress so far, and liking it, Erik and KT would appreciate your vote!  If you are not yet signed up to vote at the Small Press Idol 2009, feel free to do so!

If you have signed up to vote at Small Press Idol, you can vote for 'Faction' at:  http://www.dimestoreproductions.com/forum-t33806.html

"Steel Rising"

Has Advanced To Round 2 In The Small Press Idol Contest!

Brad Huffman-Parent...  Has notified me that 'Steel Rising' has advanced to Round 2 of the Small Press Idol for 2009!

Click Here to see our Newly Listed listed Comics, Magazines, Games and more!  Brad sent me the following when I asked what his project for the SPI was all about:  "What if every fantasy novel you ever read…was true? Elves and dwarves, orcs and dragons, and many others all existed side-by-side with man and many a great adventure was had.

“Steel Rising”, a comic book written and created by Brad Huffman-Parent with art by Brad Thingvold, Joe Armour, and Michael Summers, has advanced to Round 2 of the 2009 Small Press Idol Competition. This year, all records have been broken.  With over 40 entries and a prize of $700, this is the largest competition Small Press Idol has ever seen.

In “Steel Rising”, the forests and villages have faded, replaced by cities and highways. The world has moved on and The Races moved with it. Dwarves are successful businessmen, Orcs and Trolls fill the ranks of the military and police, and dragons sleep under the Golden Gate Bridge.  Tolkien is more history than fiction.  But the transition was not so easy for some.  After the Second World War, Mages were declared a danger to all normal beings. Since then Mages have been hunted, imprisoned, and killed. The few remaining are deep in hiding, afraid to reveal their power to the world.  Then the mysterious and powerful Black Ruby is unearthed.  Only a Mage can unleash its power and only a Mage can stop it. Now the race is on to find one of the last remaining Mages. Will her power be used to save the world or to destroy it?

For those that have read the above and would like to know more, then check out these web sites:

The official Steel Rising Blog is http://www.steelrising.blogspot.com/

The Small Press Idol home page to caste your vote is at http://www.dimestoreproductions.com/content287.html

The Facebook Steel Rising Fan page can be found at http://www.facebook.com/home.php?ref=home#/pages/Steel-Rising/53524008534

My thanks to Brad for sending this project synopsis to me!   I'm sure he would appreciate your vote on his 'Steel Rising' comic in Small Press Idol Round 2 !

Click Here to see our current listed Comics, Magazines, Games and more! Ian Shires , (pictured to the left), has listed on the main web site all 27 of the projects that made it into Round 2.   By making it that far, all 27 are set to have their projects printed in 'Mysterious Visions' at the very least.

Ian also says "But more over, they are still in contention for the $700 cash prize, 4-issue publishing commitment grand prize. So take a moment this week to check them all out, make your own notes about them, and get ready for Round 2 where we turn up the heat big time, and YOUR VOTES COUNT!"

For those of you that have missed my previous blog posts on SPI, you may be thinking "So what exactly is Small Press Idol?".  I'll let their web site promo say it for them:

"Small Press Idol is the greatest amateur's contest in comics, mixing a bit of American Idol with a bit of The Apprentice, and a bunch of our own special social experiment elements. This contest is not for everyone...but it will be fun, and, for those that participate, it will challenge you to be the best you can be. If you survive round 1, your work WILL BE PUBLISHED! This year: We have national store distribution! It's our biggest year ever!"

So starting April 1st, 2009, YOU can start voting for your faves on Small Press Idol... so take the time now to register and take part!  I personally vote for at least one project every day!

In Memoriam...

Frank Springer

1929 - 2009

Earlier this week I learned Of Frank Springer's passing...   Frank had died last Thursday, April 2nd, 2009 at the age of 79.  Frank was known both as a veteran comic book and comic strip artist.

I had last met Frank at the 2004 San Diego Comic Con International where he was a Guest of Honor, and looked through my photos of that con to run a photo of him here.   Not succeeding, I looked at the web for any photos of him.   Like so many others of his generation, Frank let his work speak for him, as there are very few photos of Frank available.  I am crediting Mike Lynch for the photo that is run above, as I want to post this Memoriam before too much time passes.

Frank was born December 6, 1929 in Queens, New York.   After he graduated Syracuse University in 1952 with a degree in art, he promptly went into the Army.   Like so many others who had an art background upon joining the armed forces,  he wound up doing mostly illustration work, and in his case drawing maps, at Fort Dix.

Frank paid his dues early in his art career honing his skills.  After his discharge from the Army in 1954, he began assisting George Wunder on the well known comic strip, Terry and the Pirates.  He was there until 1960, yet returned when George needed help to meet deadlines at times.

Even though he left comic strips for a while to pursue comic book work, Frank later also occasionally worked on other comics strips during later years.  Those included several years of Rex Morgan, M.D., where he received credit.   Like others in the comic strip industry he also 'ghosted' on strips.  Those included The Heart of Juliet Jones, On Stage, Friday Foster, The Phantom and several other strips.

My first real knowledge of Frank Springer was his work in comic books.   I was eight years old when he started his comic book career in 1960.  At that time most artists were not credited with producing the pencils or inks, and thus his name was not highlighted to the readers in several cases.  It was at Dell Comics that Frank drew his first assignment.  That story was called Brain Boy, a short lived Dell Comics series.  That was a different series for sure!   It was only later that I found that he also drew many other comic books for Dell during that time period including Charlie Chan, Ghost Stories and Toka, Jungle King.

Like other freelancers of the period he also began drawing for DC  Comics.  My major recollection of his work there was on The Secret Six first two issues.  Frank was also one of the many that did several  Batman stories under the "Bob Kane" signature.

My best memories of Frank's work was of course on Marvel Comics, as I was basically a 'Marvel Zombie' during those years.

Frank worked on Marvel's Nick Fury, Agent of SHIELD when Jim Steranko needed more time to finish a couple of his stories.  After Jim left that series, Frank took over the artwork for a short period.  During that time period he also worked on Captain Marvel #13 (shown above), and #14.  He did a couple of other stories, and then returned to work for Dell Comics until it stopped publishing in 1973.

When Frank came back to Marvel Comics, it seemed he was used primarily as an inker.   Several of his fans may remember him on some Spider-Man titles and also Dazzler.   I especially appreciated his inking on Dick Ayer's pencils in the early issues of the 'Death' strip in the War is Hell comic book series, starting with issue #9 in 1974.  He also inked on the Man From Atlantis series, and the Savage She-Hulk series.  His team up with Frank Robbins on The Invaders with Captain America, Sub-Mariner, Human Torch and others, was also a series I enjoyed...

Like many of his contemporaries, Frank also worked for the short-lived Atlas - Seaboard Comics line, on The Cougar series.

After his Marvel Comics Comics work Frank went on to draw many of the comic book style parodies in National Lampoon.  Since I am not familiar with his work there, I'll just mention that in passing.

He also did some additional comics work,  Action Comics Weekly for DC Comics in 1988, The 'Nam for Marvel Comics in 1989, Armor in 1991 for Continuity Comics, Chronicles of Conan in 2003 for Dark Horse Comics, Coyote for Marvel in 1983, and other work.

He even had time to draw the newspaper comic strip The Incredible Hulk for a period of time, which combined both his comic book and comic strip background!

During Frank's long career the National Cartoonists Society awarded him its trophy as Best Comic Book Artist of the Year three different times.  He also served as the Society's President one term.

Frank also had a family life during his busy career.   He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Barbara, as well as his four children and seven grandchildren.

My condolences to them at this time.
~ Michael

Josh Mills had told me previously that he would be adding a special bookmark with sales of his brand new Sketchbook at this Con.  Above is a photo of the 'Battling Yank' bookmark!

Josh Mills was pleased to bring copies of his newly published 'Sketchbook By Josh Mills' to this Con. Above is the cover to the first edition. Be sure to get one before they are sold out!

Josh Mills... Was kind enough to share with me several of his photos taken in Seattle and at the Emerald City Comic Con after he and his wife, Alexandra, arrived safely back home!

I have blogged previously that Josh would have a table at the 2009 ECCC and that if you were going, to stop in and say hi... and check out his newly published 'Sketchbook'.

What is really neat by viewing the photos that were emailed to me, is looking at the Con through the eyes of a comics pro and his wife.  I am only able to share four of the photos here in the blog post, but if you are a Facebook member, then check out the rest he has uploaded at his 'Photos' section there!

Of course there would be photos of Josh and Alexandra at this Con in his uploaded photos, and those photos tell of the excitement that was felt by both of them during this weekend convention.

Josh was early at his table to help others set up, as seen in the topmost photo.  I myself, as a dealer, have felt the 'urge' to arrive early to a show and set up.  So that is good to see a comics pro feel the same urge to arrive early!

In the next photo, Josh was joined by others in the comics field, which reminds me of how fun it is to have friends stop in at your table! Pictured are Aaron Kuder and Doug Hills with Josh.

Of course it's not all fun fun fun at a con.... The third photo shows Josh sketching an illustration for a fan.  Of course if you enjoy doing that, then it is fun to see your fan's face light up when he/she takes possession of the sketch after you are finished with it!

And I couldn't resist publishing the photo of Alexandra meeting Mike Mignola for the first time!   Reminds me of me finally meeting comics pros who hardly ever came out to the West Coast, like John Buscema!

Again, if you are a Facebook member, then Josh has several more photos uploaded to his Facebook Member Page.  Of course there are photos of costumed fans walking around and posing... but I usually publish too many of them here in my Blog already!   Yeah, sorry no pics of Wonder Woman this post, LOL!

Also, the 'Sketchbook by Josh Mills' is still available from the first printing.  Josh told me before he left for the ECCC that...  "The con price is $10 and this comes with a small sketch as a bookmark. The page count is 24 pages".  You can check his web site to see when it is available for purchase again.  Josh is expecting to have a table at the upcoming 2009 San Diego Comic Con International, (SDCC), in July, so you can also see him there to purchase and say hi!

Josh's web site is:   http://www.JoshMillsArt.com

The 2009 Emerald City ComiCon ran this past weekend, April 4th thru 5th.  For details on next year's convention you can view that con's web site at:   http://www.emeraldcitycomicon.com

BTW, I already blogged about 7 other creators that also were attending this same con... Click here to see that post!

Thanks Josh and Alexandra for sharing your ECCC 2009 photos with me and my Blog readers!
