TODAY'S 'MAIN FEATURE':

Earlier this week I blogged about the upcoming 'Indy Comic Book Week' that starts December 27th, 2009....

The above pictured comic book is Not part of this upcoming event, but I still wanted to bring it to my Blog's readers today.

That's because when I met Dave Ryan again at the 2009 Long Beach Comic Con, he gave me a comic book that he had printed years earlier to read, saying that it had something to do with a project he was working on.

It took me a while to figure out which project he referred to, but now that I've read the Penance comic book issue #1 and researched his websites and more, I've figured it out!

So what is this 'Penance' publication about? Well first, it was printed in the year 2000. So I'll just briefly print what the earlier promo info said:

"In ancient times twenty four gemstones were scattered through out the world in an attempt to find worthy bearers. Eash is a conduit to it's local mythos. Whom so ever finds a gemstone shall be endowed with a power of a god. Now in a race for omnipotence, mankind will tip the scales in the war between heaven and hell."

The first reason I am bringing this previously published comic book up today in my blog, is that You don't have to search back issue bins to find it!

It can be found here on the web to read for Free!  It's at: http://www.myebook.com/index.php?option=ebook&id=5296 . I enjoyed the work by Dave Ryan and Peter Palmiotti. It's a little 'out there' storyline wise, but the art and colors kept my interest throughout the pages!

The next reason I'm blogging about this is because it contains the premise for the series 'War of the Independents'!  What's that about???

Here is the promo info for 'War Of The Independents from Dave:

"The inspiration came to me one day as I sat next to the recently finished Infinite Crisis and Civil War issues and glanced at the ‘friends list’ on my MySpace profile. It had occurred to me that no one has ever tried to unite the independents for a mega-crossover, but just as important to me was all the creators who have a dream but are stuck in a nightmare of self-publishing and will probably never be able to deliver their characters to the public. This was a way to do both."

Dave goes on to say:

"The story revolves around the villains Kain and Orcus trying to create a reverse tower of Babel to open the doorway to RazorJack's world and conquer Earth. The villains make their first appearance in Ryan’s own book “Penance,” The heroes in Penance are not strong enough to deal with Orcus and Kain, so they recruit heroes from throughout time and space."

The series will feature a variety independent characters such as:

Flaming Carrot (Bob Burden)
SCUD THE DISPOSABLE ASSASSIN (Rob Schrab)
Milk & Cheese (Evan Dorkin)
Bone (Jeff Smith)
The Maxx (Sam Keith)
Popbot (Ashley Wood)
Zippy the Pinhead (Bill Griffith)
Cowboys & Aliens (Platinum Studios)
Buzzboy (John Gallagher)
Johnny Raygun (Rich Woodall)
Too Much Coffee Man (Shannon Wheeler)

...And then Dave lists a lot more characters... way too many to list here!

The creative team for this six issue series is:

Writer(s)    Richard Kane Ferguson & Dave Ryan
Penciller(s) Dave Ryan
Inker(s)     Peter Palmiotti
Colorist(s)  Greg Waller

You can find out more about 'The War Of The Independents' by either becoming Facebook Friends with Dave Ryan by clicking here!

Or check the following web site on occasion for possible updates:  http://www.waroftheindependents.com/home  !

My thanks to Dave Ryan for making me aware of his Penance comic book series and what makes that series important for his next series!

TODAY'S FEATURETTE:

INDY COMIC BOOK HISTORY:   Today's 'Main Feature', as shown above, was on an Indy Comic Book which is begetting another comic book series, which is in keeping with my blog series celebrating the upcoming Indy Comic Book Week at the end of this month.

Today's Featurette section is a mini-history of 'Soldiers Of The Dead', of which issue #1 published earlier by Atlantis Studios is pictured below:

Click Here to see several of our HoRRoR & MoNSTer comics and magazines listings!

So what is this issue about? Here's the promo info:

"Paul Fusco converted his unsold screenplay "Soldiers of the Dead" into a comic book with the help of custom publisher Atlantis Studios.

Atlantis Studios connected Fusco with a comic artist, Ulises Roman, of Argentina, who illustrated the visual side of the script.

Fusco describes the action-horror tale as "Black Hawk Down" meets "Aliens" - with zombies, of course!

The 24-page preview issue of "Soldiers of the Dead" is on sale now and full 96-page graphic novel is scheduled to be published in the future.

"Soldiers of the Dead" tells the story of a U.S. Army Green Beret team dispatched to Haiti on a mission to suppress a military conflict. However, the troops discover a town infested with voodoo-induced zombies."

Okay... here's my thoughts for this issue:

I'm not really into Zombies or Vampires reading per se... although I do blog about ones that catch my interest at times.

The writing of this comic book was interesting enough that I would check out the future graphic novel.  Plus the artwork is different enough to make this more than just a run of the mill zombie comic book. The colors are very vivid in the issue.

The publication I have in hand is not the one shown above. I have the one published by Eyes On Hand On Entertainment in Agoura Hills.  The credits for that issue are Paul Vincent Fusco and Ulises Carpintero.

I had more info on this comic book's history, but that data seems to have been removed...

For more on this work, please see the web site at:

http://www.atlantisstudios.net/soldiersofthedead/creator.html

My thanks for the preview comic being submtitted here for possible review!

~Michael

Comicbook Artists Guild Anthology: Issue Seven

TODAY'S 'MAIN FEATURE':

Earlier this week I blogged about the upcoming 'Indy Comic Book Week' that starts December 27th, 2009....

The above pictured comic book was issued prior to that period of time, but still fits in with my blog series on Indy Comics. Plus you can still buy copies of it at the address I'll be providing below.

I have already blogged about 'Iconic', which is also from C.A.G. That annual anthology, (#8), in graphic novel format was published in time for the 2009 MoCCA Fest.

So what is this publication about?  Here is the promo info:

CAG # 7 is six short stories filled with Action, Adventure and Honor packed in 56 glorious black and white pages. Included is Three J Productions own western hero, Jonas McCabe™ Bounty Hunter in "Reflection in the Water".

Okay, so what are my thoughts on this issue?

Well, the issue was sent to me courtesy of Carl Hering Jr. owner of Three J Productions, who as mentioned in the above promo release, has a feature in the comic book.

As I have mentioned numerous times here in my Blog, reviewing an anthology is one of the hardest publications to review.  That's because too often stories are published together that don't mesh well when reading in one publication in my opinion. However, when the stories don't clash with one another, then that is when reading them is a pleasure.  So how did this anthology do?

Here in CAG #7 are the following stories:

Agent Unknown: Kill Zone - Story and art well done by Robert Sodaro and Chris Torres. The shades of gray / black / white are fitting for the genre of this story.

Recollections of a Commander - I go back to my earlier statement.  This doesn't flow after the first printed story, and doesn't with the next one either. In another anthology with more stories like this one, it could fare better.

Reflection In The Water - Story by Carl Herring Jr. with art by Ed Coutts. Story and art flowed well.  Enough for me to want to seek out more of this Jonas McCabe - Bounty Hunter series.

Steel and Paper - Written by Ed Pereira with artwork and lettering by Ed Traquino. Well plotted story, with art that flowed with that genre.

Rockabilly Rex: Riders In the Sky - Story and art presented well by several persons.  Having the story title and the credits on the last page of the story was the only aspect of this story that didn't work for me.  Would have preferred to see that on the first page of the story.

Then the rest of the 'comic book' is printed in a 'flip' option.

The story there is called 'A History Lesson starring: Tarchaka and Squeeature' -  I'm glad that this segment was in a 'flip' option printing with a 'flip' back cover. That's because this story didn't mesh with any of the earlier stories!  But I can forgive that because of the 'flip' printing.  Reading it from this side is like having an xtra comic book for 'free'.  So okay... taken by itself, the story and art were OK for me. (Maybe the second story could have been placed at the end of the stories presented, before the flip option?)

So for an anthology publication, I would have to rate it as a pretty good read.  There was enough in here to make it worth the cover price.  Plus as a reader, you are exposed to creative teams that you probably don't see that much.  I recognized several of the names, but not all of them...

I stated earlier that I would give you the address on where to obtain this comic book. Carl Herring Jr.'s web site has this available for purchase at $5.00 by clicking here!

Plus, while you are there, take a look at his Crime Wave Anthology Volume 1 that I blogged about here! That was a great read, and I'm looking forward to Volume 2 of that anthology series!

I will be blogging about more indy comics series right here at ComicBookCollectorsBlog.com in the days to come, straight into the New Year itself, as that is how long 'Indy Comic Book Week' continues into!

TODAY'S FEATURETTE:

NEW INDY COMIC BOOK:   Today's 'Main Feature', as shown above, was on an Indy Comic Book, which is in keeping with my series celebrating the upcoming Indy Comic Book Week at the end of this month.

Today's Featurette section is an update on a mini-series from Bluewater Comics that I first blogged about when issue #1 came out. (Click here for my review blog on issue #1.)

Below are shown both variations of the front cover to the issue #3 of this 4 issue mini series; with cover B at the left, and cover A at the right:

Click Here to see several of our SCI-FI comics and magazines listings!

So what is this issue about? Here's the promo info:

"Tom, Astro and Roger have discovered the origin and the goal of the robot army called the One State. To fight these deadly robots, though, they need to solve a mystery, and, to solve that mystery, they must enlist the help of Joan Dale."

Writer: Bill Spangler

Art: John DaCosta

Letterer: Wilson Ramos Jr.

Colors: Niko Anaya

Okay... here's my thoughts for this issue:

I enjoyed the first issue enough to continue with the series. Bill's plotline and dialogue have kept me interested to this point, and I look forward to the ending of the story arc next issue.

John's artwork as I stated in my earlier blog post is a different style when he illustrates the characters.  After three issues I find it still appropriate for this story genre. I really do like the background scenes he puts in, which gives me the illusion of being in space with the characters.

The lettering by Wilson continues to be one of his good lettering works.

The colors by Niko are vivid and mesh well with the artwork.

I'm looking forward to the wrapping up of this four issue mini-series.  So far the ride has been a good one.  I don't see any reason not to enjoy the fourth and final installment...

For more on this Tom Corbett: Space Cadet mini-series, please check out their web site at:

http://www.bluewaterprod.com/

My thanks to the folks at Bluewater Productions for submitting the 3rd issue of this series being reviewed here today in this blog post.

~Michael

TODAY'S 'MAIN FEATURE':

Earlier this week I blogged about the upcoming 'Indy Comic Book Week' that starts December 27th, 2009....

The above pictured comic book was issued before that period of time, but still fits in with my blog series on Indy Comics. Plus you may still find copies of it at your LCBS during 'Indy Comic Book Week'.

Female Force: Barbara Walters #1 is NOT the first of the Female Force series from Bluewater Comics that I have blogged about here. That's because I have found each of the comics in the series thus far to be readable, enjoyable, and possibly collectible for later purposes.

So what is this publication about?  Here is the promo info:

By:          Robert Schnakenberg, Ryan Howe, Vinnie Tartamella
Type:        Comics
Genres:      Biography, Non-Fiction
Publisher:   Bluewater Productions
Pub. Date:   November 11, 2009
Availability:   Released
ISBN:        978-1-4276-4122-9
UPC:         837654404904
For ages:    13+

This comic series has been featured on CNN, Fox News, and OH! Magazine.

She's a television trailblazer with a unique "View" all her own. Read the incredible true story of Barbara Walters' rise from the daughter of a nightclub promoter to the pinnacle of TV journalism. Learn about her legendary interviews, her battles with sexism, and the men she loved and lost along the way.

Okay, so what are my thoughts on this issue?

As usual, I enjoyed the great front cover by Vinnie Tartamella!

The interior pages were pencilled by Andrew Yerrakadu. His style was fitting for a biographical comic book format.  The illustrations of the main characters that I knew of were pretty much recognizable.  The storytelling flowed with the artwork.

The colors by Osmarco Valladao fit with the illustrations.

Wilson Ramos Jr.'s lettering was 'right on' as usual!

No sensationalism here in this story. I did learn several new facts about Barbara while reading this comic book.  Barbara has been around for so many years on TV that I had kind of forgotten the path she had taken to get where she is today.

Sure, Tina and I always watch at least some portions of her year end special, 'The Most Interesting People of the Year'. And I have caught her on The View on occasion this year.

So, if she is proud enough of this comic book to hi-lite it on her show, The View, and state that it was pretty much right on, then that clarifies that this comic book is a 'winner' in my view too!

This publication can also be found at Tfaw if you can't locate one at your LCBS (Local Comic Book Shop) during Indy Comic Book Week:

For more Female Force comic book coming soon in the series, you can check out those concepts at Bluewater Comics' own web site:

TODAY'S FEATURETTE:

NEW INDY COMIC BOOK:   Today's 'Main Feature' as shown above, was about another of the comics in the 'Female Force' series from Bluewater Comics, that of Barbara Walters.

Today's Featurette section is about one more in that same series, this one on Stephenie Meyer.

Of course, even if you haven't read the books or seen the movies that Stephenie Meyer has help create, you still must have heard her name, as she and 'Twilight' have been on all the channels and covered / discussed at pop culture conventions!

Below is the front cover to the issue on Stephenie Meyer:

Click Here to see several of our HoRRoR and MoNSTer comics and magazines listings!

So what is this issue about? Here's the promo info:

By:         Ryan Burton, Dave Macneil, Vinnie Tartamella
Type:      Comics
Genres:    Biography, Non-Fiction
Publisher:  Bluewater Productions
Pub. Date: November 11, 2009
Availability: Released
UPC:       074470254102
For ages:  13+

"This comic series has been featured on CNN, Fox News, and OK! Magazine.

Just in time for the theatrical release of The Twilight Saga: New Moon, Bluewater brings you the biography comic book FEMALE FORCE: Stephenie Meyer! Named USA Today's "Author of the Year" in 2008, the celebrity author is responsible for ushering in a new vampire-centric fan base. From her beginnings in Connecticut and Utah, to her fame and fortune as today's hottest author, witness her story being told by the most famous vampire of them all!"

Okay... here's my thoughts for this issue:

I haven't seen a front cover by Vinnie Tartamella that I haven't liked!

The interior artwork by Dave MacNeil was a little 'strange' to me for a biographical comic book, but the slant for this comic book was more toward a 'HoRRoRific' slant and 'cutesy' way of presenting the bio, so the artwork did fit that style of presentation.

The coloring by Kristy Swan flowed with the storyline and interior art pages.

Jaymes Reed's lettering also meshed well with the art style and coloring.

What didn't work for me was the 'host' aspect of the story, who was introduced at the beginning of the story and narrated the tale.  That's what it seemed to me... a tale, not a bio comic book.  Which is probably what the writer and publisher wanted for this comic book.  Which would have been fine if the series wasn't titled: Female Force - Stephenie Meyer.  It just didn't quite come over to me as belonging in this series of comics that I have read and enjoyed thus far.  It just seemed 'gimmicky' to me.  I'm sure younger readers will probably enjoy the 'gimmick' of using "the most famous vampire of all" as the host...

For more on this Female Force series, please check out their web site at:

http://www.bluewaterprod.com/

My thanks to the folks at Bluewater Productions for submitting both issues of this series being reviewed here today in this blog post.

~Michael

TODAY'S 'MAIN FEATURE':

Yesterday I blogged about the upcoming 'Indy Comic Book Week' that starts December 27th, 2009....

And stated that one of the persons that told me of this event was Jiba Molei Anderson.  I thought that today I would blog about Jiba's publication that will be for sale during that upcoming event at selected LCBS in the Illinois, Michigan, New York, and California areas.

Please note that I received an 'Official Griot Preview' .pdf file copy to review from, which does not always reflect what holding an actual printed copy in both hands could show when printed, or how the paper itself 'feels' when turning the pages while reading.

I have already blogged about his earlier work on 'The Horsemen', thus I was familar with the storyline, the characters, and the artwork.

So what is this publication about?  Here is the promo info:

Written and Illustrated by Jiba Molei Anderson

Standard Comic
full Color
Page Count: 32

The Orisha emerged from a deep slumber. Seeing that their mission had been perverted, they had set about to free us…whether we wanted them to or not. But, what if there were others not Orisha, not Deitis, not Human, but something more, a new Race? What side would they choose in the coming war? And, who truly controls the Eight Immortals but the number seven?

The gods of ancient Africa have possessed seven people to protect humanity from itself…whether humanity wants them to or not. They have been chosen to combat those who control the fate of the planet.

The Horsemen: Book Of Olorun TM and © Griot Enterprises & Jiba Molei Anderson. All rights reserved.

Here in the 'Book of Olorun', the artwork once again is of fine craftmanship caliber, and the colors are vivid!

However, the text narration boxes were a little hard to read for me, because of the white text on the yellow-orange background boxes.  The word balloons were the normal black text on white background, which was clearer to read.  I had a little difficulty reading the narration boxes from the .pdf file. Hopefully the printed format doesn't have the same level of reading difficulty.

Jiba's artwork does seem to be more a pin-up style of artwork here in this issue.  Now, there is nothing wrong with that, as long as you know going in that the artwork is that style. Several artists work in that style, adding their own flair to the work.

There is still a story that is conveyed here, just that the storyboards are more of a pin-up style in presentation of that story.  But I happen to like Jiba's art style, so that was OK with me in this issue.

At the beginning of this blog I mentioned that Jiba's publication will be at select Local Comic Book Shops. Those shops according to Jiba include:

Chicago, IL - Graham Crackers, Brainstorm Comics, Dreambound Comics, 3rd Coast Comics, Keith's Komix.

Michigan - Green Brain Comics.

Georgia - Dragon's Horde.

New York City - Midtown Comics.

California - Four Color Fantasies in Rancho Cucamonga.

For those of You that are NOT in those named areas... Jiba's publication can be found at Indy Planet at this link!

SPECIAL NOTE: As an addendum, Jiba has called me and told me that he will be signing at Graham Crackers Comics one day only on December 30th from the hours of Noon to 2 PM at the Downtown location at 55 E. Madison. Please call that store to verify that on the day of the event, as events are always subject to change!

For more info on Jiba's works and where YOU can be interactive with him and others about this series, please check out his 'Horsemen Graphic Novel Facebook Fan Page'!

TODAY'S FEATURETTE:

NEW COMICS SERIES:   Today's Featurette section is about a comic book series that was sent in to me for possible review.  However, it was just a single issue, #3, that I received.

When I jump into a series that has already started, it is sometimes hard to catch up, UNLESS the creator(s) have a 'intro' page or 'what's happened before' section in the issue you currently are holding!

So I thank Mike Sales, creator and writer of Southside Nefertiti, who is pictured below at the 2009 Onxycon at his table, for putting in that recap!

Click Here to see several of our INDY comics and magazines listings!

So what is this issue and series about?  Well on the splash page is the following:

"Daughter of slain activist Kleo Jones, Nefertiti is a super-powered single mother who has built a good life for herself and her son Joshua, while still looking out for folks around the way. No matter what goes down, the Southside knows when they need help... they can always count on Nefertiti."

Okay... here's my thoughts for this issue only:  The cover is in color. The interior pages are black and white. There are two parts to this third issue in the series, and there is at least a fourth issue for this story arc.

So, the story is a continued one, and I felt that I was missing out on not reading the previous issue at least.  Even though there was a recap page, I still had that feeling.  So a newbie to this series has a choice. Either this issue has enough drawing power to make you search for the earlier two issues, and continue with the fourth, or you take this as a one-shot reading experience. I know that this issue for me was one that I would like to know more about Southside Nefertiti. Yet I also know that one of the draws, but also one of the drawbacks of the early Marvel Comics was the fact that most became continued stories, and distribution was not always there for earlier or later issues...

The artwork by Randolph Williams was well suited for the storyline and the black and white interior pages.  There were several head shots, and talking scenes, yet plenty of action illustrated by Randolph!

I didn't see the credits for the lettering, but that was a good job in lettering, especially with the sound effects used in the pages.

I believe that a reader who started with the first issue would get more out of this series.  The concept of Nefertiti is a sound one, and I like the background info. There are relationships between the characters which fleshes out those characters in this issue. I do note that even though I just recently received this issue, the copyright was 2007 for the publishing date.  I'm not for sure how many issues have been printed to date, or if the story arc reached a conclusion.

For more on this series, please check out their web site at:

And You can be interactive with the folks at Type Illy Press if you are a Facebook member by joining their Fan Page at:

My thanks to Michael Sales for submitting Issue #3 of this series for possible review!

TODAY'S 'MAIN FEATURE':

I have had a few Facebook Friends ask me if I was going to publicize the upcoming 'Indy Comic Book Week'....

Which I am glad to do so here today.  Here is the press release for the upcoming event:

"Indy Comic Book Week is not only an event, but also a call to action.

Diamond Comic Distributors announced they will not ship any new comics for the last week of December. This company is the primary distributor of comic books in North America. What some would call a sad week without our favorite mainstream titles, we are calling an opportunity. This vacancy allows independent and small press comic book creators to claim this week as their own.

We challenge writers and artists to self publish new material for this week, and offer it to their local stores. We ask for retailers to take this as an opportunity to showcase local independent talent on the new release shelves. We encourage fans to break from their buying habits and try something new.

Raise your fist and proudly declare that comic books are more than an industry, more than a handful of corporations – it is a creative outlet for independent-minded artists and storytellers. This last week of 2009 belongs to you. Power to the people. Right on."

I've been blogging about many indy comic books, both one-shots and mini-series, since beginning this blog back in June of 2006.  So I am pleased to see others taking the lead in promoting indy comics at the end of this year!

I will be blogging about more indy comics series right here at ComicBookCollectorsBlog.com in the days to come, right into the New Year itself!

My thanks to those that informed me of this upcoming event, including Jiba Molei Anderson, so I could blog about it here in my Blog today!  Jiba tells me that his newest work: "The Horsemen: Book of Olorun" will be in stores Dec. 30 for Indy Comic Book Week. I am intending on blogging about his latest creation as well as others between now and then! For more info until then, check out his 'Horsemen Graphic Novel Facebook Fan Page'!

TODAY'S FEATURETTE:

THE PASSING OF GENE BARRY a.ka. 'Bat Masterson' and other TV / Film Roles:   With all that has been going on here... I have not been able to blog about the death of Gene Garry, who passed away on December 9th 2009, until today.

Although others might 'know' him better in other roles, it was his role as 'Bat Masterson' on the TV Show that he first became known to me.  Yeah, I was at that impressionable age when all those TV Westerns were on during the late 1950's into the early 1960's!  Issue #7 of 'Bat Mastson' from Dell Comics (May-July 1961) is shown below to show you how 'dapper' Gene Barry was in this role!

Click Here to see our WESTERNS comics and magazineslistings!

Gene Barry's real name was Eugene Klass, and he was born June 14th, 1919 in New York City. All of his grandparents were Jewish immigrants from Russia.

Eugene did what so many others did in his profession. He took a 'stage name', and decided to honour John Barrymore, and thus 'Gene Barry' started his acting career.

Again, although I knew him best as 'Bat Masterson', other collectors of his works knew him best in either 'Our Miss Brooks', 'The Name of the Game', or 'Burke's Law'.

The earliest work that I am aware of was his role in the 1952 film 'The Atomic City', and hi last work was in the 2005 film 'War of the Worlds'.

Unfortunately it seems I missed his recreation of the role of 'Bat Masterson' for two episodes of 'Guns of Paradise' in 1990 alongside Hugh O'Brian as Wyatt Earp.  I'll have to look those up now as a fond farewell to Gene Barry...

My condolences to Gene's family members on his passing.

~Michael
