TODAY'S FEATURE - Blog #3520:

This past Saturday I blogged about the upcoming Long Beach Comic & HoRRoR Con that is running October 29th & 30th in Long Beach, California.

The con's promoters had just added the 'HoRRoR' title to the name of the con, as the con keeps occuring during the Halloween period.

So I thought to continue this week with review blogs on HoRRor / MoNSTer / Sci-Fi comic books that have been given to me or mailed in for review. Here's the fourth one of this week's reviews:

The photo at the top left of this blog is of Geo Brawn IV at his table in Artists Alley at the recent 2011 San Diego Comic Con.  He is shown holding a copy of this 'graphic novel' that I'm reviewing here today.

This isn't the first time I've mentioned Geo either here or at my Facebook Fan Page, as seen via this link.

I've read this graphic novel earlier, but as usual after attending the largest comic con in the Northern Hemisphere... I've been a little backed up in review blogging all those comics / graphic novels / TPBs that I was given there.  This was the perfect week to post a review on this graphic novel.

That's because this is definitely a 'HoRRoR' graphic novel.  The preview edition comic book said this about the storyline:

"Gwen had no idea what she was in for when she became a vampire in the year 2072 AD. Until she was drafted into this team as apart of a great prophecy. Soon she learns the line between good and evil is not always black and white, but yet is always a wild, sinister ride.

This is a Story that depicts an order of supernatural beings,(vampires, werewolves, witches, demons, etc.), who are sworn to fight the forces of Evil that prey on the unsuspecting mortals of this world. Known as Blood Rites, they've continued the fight since the dawn of time."

Blood Rites:Next Gen. TM and © Geo BRAWN IV. All rights reserved.

Okay... That is just one of the features in this graphic novel, but you get the picture as to what the creator is showing in this Book Two.

As for my thoughts:

Front Cover -  The words 'Blood Rites' in the color red lets the casual browser into knowing what this book is probably about.  Plus adding the images of five females on the front cover adds to what the main characters will be like.

Inside Front Cover - A 'Credits Page' / 'Thank You Page' to the creators supporters in this endeavor. Okay...

First Page - The start of a three page intro

Fourth Page - Chapter One - The Kat... which continues into more pages and stories.

The artwork is black & white, which is fine, because the 'blood red color' might be a little overwhelming for the faint of heart.

The storyline is a compilation of many stories, and the chapters seem to overlap and run into each other.  Being a creation of one man who is both writer & artist of this series, this book takes you where he wants to go...

Where that exactly is, I don't know, even after reading the whole book.  Geo has been developing his multiple stories into a collection of graphic novels known as The Untold Chronicles, and this Book Two is 'Blood Rites'.  Back on October 14th of 2010 I review blogged Book One, as seen here in Blog #3256.

So, if there is an end story to this 'Untold Chronicles' series, I don't know what it is...!  However if this genre of story is one that you enjoy reading in comic book illustrated format, this one is up there in providing you the thrills and chills that you would be looking for!

Geo illustrates women very well.  He also has the shades / blacks / tones when illustrating down as well.  This book is done very artistically in black & white. No need for color interior pages.

What I would like to see in the next book is an 'outline' of sorts that ties together Book One, Two & Three when it is published.  As to what all these stories tie in together as.

I'm sure that I could find more answers at his web site, or Facebook Group Page, or elsewhere, but I'd like to see it published in Book Three when that comes to print.  I'm 'Old School' that way, where if a publication is in print, then the characters bios etc., should be in print also.  But that's my opinion from over fifty years of reading comics...

In the meantime... I'm giving this a VERY FINE / VERY FINE PLUS (VF/VF+) 8.25 out of a possible 10.0 comic book grade, because of what I just mentioned above.

If you don't see this graphic novel at your LCBS... You can purchase it at: Untold Chronicles: Blood Rites.

If you missed Book One... Here's a place to purchase it online: The Untold Chronicles-Everdance: A Blood Story.

If you are in the Los Angeles Metro Area, then you can also buy both books at his table at the upcoming ComiKaze on November 5th & 6th!

Thanks again to Geo Brawn IV for bringing this Book Two to my attention at the 2011 SDCC!

TODAY'S FEATURE - Blog #3519:

This past Saturday I blogged about the upcoming Long Beach Comic & HoRRoR Con that is running October 29th & 30th in Long Beach, California.

The con's promoters had just added the 'HoRRoR' title to the name of the con, as the con keeps occuring during the Halloween period.

So I thought to continue this week with review blogs on HoRRor / MoNSTer / Sci-Fi comic books that have been given to me or mailed in for review. Here's the third one of this week's reviews:

Scarlet Huntress #2 - Photo Cover Variant!

I've review blogged the Scarlet Huntress Preview Issue before in blog #3232 back in September of 2010.  So I was looking forward to seeing how the 2nd issue of this series turned out in print...

Here's what I found when reading the comic book:

Front Cover -  I received the photo cover variant to possibly review.  I usually like female characters with live models on the front cover... And this photo cover variant was no exception!  She came across exactly as what the creator, Sean Forney, had illustrated in the Preview issue I had review blogged earlier!

Inside Front Cover - Showed that there were three different covers to this issue #2, which I am not usually a fan of... Unless there are only two covers, with one a photo cover.  There were additional credits and links shown on this inside front cover, which was used as a 'credits page'.

Splash Page - Not used as a 'splash page', but rather as page one of the story.

Interior Pages - Tells the following story:  "After running away for two years due to the death of her mother, Scarlet returns hoping to move on with her life. Instead her plans change when she learns of a secret family legacy that will change her life forever. Through her grandmother Scarlet learns of a hidden world full of evil, werewolves, and huntresses. Now Scarlet must decide if she can truly complete her first kill as a Huntress."

After 24 pages of story, which are printed in black & white, there are 2 pages of color pin-ups, 3 pages of black & white pin-ups, and then a color photo page of the model as 'Scarlet Huntress', with a house ad page of the Scarlet Huntress as a 'game'.

The Inside Back Cover is a color ad...

The Back Cover is a color pin up page of the Scarlet Huntress.

So what's my take on this 2nd issue?

I found that the cover variant I received was a nice touch in having the character jump out at me when first looking at it.  The model fit the image that Sean had illustrated over a year ago in the Preview issue.

The inside cover page was okay, but could have been laid out a little better for reading.

The interior pages, in black and white, were fine... UNTIL I came to the color pin up pages!

I'm not a 'color snob'... But after seeing those pages in color, this comic book could be far easier to read AND sell to a wider audience range.

What I viewed in the Scarlet Huntress Preview comic that I review blogged last year, is turning out to be a good comic book series.  But seriously... The next issue should be looked at closely as printing in color...

So... I'm giving this a VERY FINE / NEAR MINT (VF/NM) 9.0 out of a possible 10.0 comic book grade, because of what I just mentioned above.

If you don't see this comic book at your LCBS... You can purchase this comic issue #2 in a digital format at Graphicly at this link. Or check out the SM Comics web site for it.

To be interactive with Sean Forney and / or his wife Stephanie Forney, who is the writer of this issue, you can 'Like' their Facebook Fan Page at: Sean Forney Illustration!

Thanks again to Sean & Stephanie Forney for bringing this issue #2 to my attention!

TODAY'S FEATURE - Blog #3518:

Saturday I blogged about the upcoming Long Beach Comic & HoRRoR Con that is running October 29th & 30th in Long Beach, California.

The con's promoters had just added the 'HoRRoR' title to the name of the con, as the con keeps occuring during the Halloween period.

So I thought to continue this week with review blogs on HoRRor / MoNSTer / Sci-Fi comic books that have been given to me or mailed in for review. Here's the second one of this week's reviews:

Territory 51 #1 From Law Dog Comics, which I missed when it first came out a few years back.

I saw this at the recent 2011 San Diego Comic Con International, as seen in the top right photo of this blog post, where I am with James Heffron, Publisher at LawDog Comics.

I've already reviewed blogged another 'Law Dog Comics' graphic novel, written by Michael Heffron, EIC at LawDog Comics, in blog #3227 as seen here. That one was on The Further Adventures Of D.B. Cooper. When Michael saw me at the Law Dog Comics booth, he introduced me to James.

Anyways, long story short... I ended up walking away with Territory 51 #1 and another comic that caught my interest, that is available for review in the future.

Right now I want to review this issue:

Front Cover - I'm definitely into what this cover shows... Cowboys and Monsters / Aliens?   (See my review blog  #3474 on Cowboys & Aliens film here, which I didn't see until after the SDCC.)

Inside Front Cover - Credits Page... Very well done, with tongue in cheek listings!

Splash Page... More of a cinematic opening than an actual splash page... Which got me right into the storyline!

Interior Pages - The creators of this title start off with what could be considered a 'classic scene', where the modern day military discovers something that has happened in the past which now gives them concern in the present.  The story moves right along, and yeah, we are going back in time to view what happened. I'm fine with all of this, except for the lettering, which at times seems to be varied a little too much.

Last Page - What a ride so far! There's 22 pages of story, and then 10 pages of house ads. For other titles from Law Dog Comics, including Athena Voltaire, which I've also received and need to review soon. (I do get backed up after big cons like SDCC in review blogging!) There are also 2 pages from Issue #2 of Territory 51, inclluding interior art previewed, so yeah, I'm very interested in how this storyline turned out!

Inside Back Cover - Another 'house ad', this one for comics creators to enter the LawDog Talent Search.

Back Cover - The Logo for Law Dog Comics.

So What's My Take on this 1st Issue?

There was a lot of storyline and action in the jam-packed 22 pages of story in this issue. The storyline, dialogue, artwork and colors were a good introduction to this series.

I have to come back to the lettering though... It did make the issue a little hard to read, when I sit back and think about it.

All in all, this 1st issue delivered what the front cover hinted at... And I am satisfied for a first issue being an intro to the series!

So... I'm giving this a VERY FINE / NEAR MINT (VF/NM) 9.0 out of a possible 10.0 comic book grade, because of what I just mentioned above.

You can purchase this comic book to see for yourself.  I don't see a 'shop' at their web site to purchase a hard copy,  but at this link you can can see that they are setting up their digital comics line at Graphicly.  I will have to update this blog post in the future on how to obtain their comics easier, as their main web site appears to be undergoing rennovation.

In the meantime, thanks to the Heffrons for suggesting this comic book title as one that I would enjoy... As I did!

TODAY'S FEATURE - Blog #3517:

Yesterday I blogged about the upcoming Long Beach Comic & HoRRoR Con that is running October 29th & 30th in Long Beach, California.

The con's promoters had just added the 'HoRRoR' title to the name of the con, as the con keeps occuring during the Halloween period.

So I thought to continue this week with review blogs on HoRRor / MoNSTer / Sci-Fi comic books that have been given to me or mailed in for review. Here's the first one of this week's reviews:

The Attic #1... From Main Enterprises.

Jim Main, Publisher of several comics & magazines, has decided to publish another anthology.  This one is captioned at the top of the comic book as 'Tales of Horror, Fantasy, and Suspense!

Okay... What do we have here?

Front Cover:  By Scott McClung... Which I like, because I do like having 'hosts' in anthology comics, which this front cover indicates this could be.  The production design is also very well done.. I like the layout, the title using a 'skull' to dot the 'i' in 'Attic'.  Good start...

Inside Front Cover: Pinup page by Rick Limacher... Black & White... Quite a bit different in style from the front cover, enough to make me move on next to the Table of Contents page, which is used instead of a 'splash page'.

Table of Contents (TOC) Page:  Nice layout.  Pages numbered for easy access... and a few panels from stories featured inside.  Quality TOC.

1st Story:  Intro to 'Grimsby'... 'Alistair Grimsby', humble caretaker of the Thorndyke Manor... which includes 'The Attic'!   Good intro for this first story in this new anthology series.  Liked this story and art by Jack Bertram and Jim Main!

2nd Story: 'The Axe of Modo' by Al Limacher with lettering by Rick Limacher... Six page story... Where the art fit the storyline.

3rd Story: 'Regret' by Robert J Sodaro and Jack Bertram... Eight Pager, where the lettering font seemed to take away just a little from the storyline.

4th Story: 'Cowbell, by Rick Limacher... Nine pager, where the storyline, the dialogue, and the art flowed together along with the lettering used.

5th Story: 'Incomplete' by Sam Gafford... A one page prose piece, like I used to see in older comic books to meet the USPS mailing requirements for mailing.  Well done.

Inside Back Cover:  By John Lambert... Not for sure what this what meant to be, other than it does feature 'Grimsby' at the forefront of the pinup page.

Back Cover:  Ad page by the printer, ComiXpress... Which is the 'norm' for small press publishers.  Almost all of the comics submitted to me for possible review are printed by either ComiXpress or Ka-Blam!

So what's my thoughts on this first issue of 'The Attic'?!

Well, I enjoy most of the publications that are published by Main Enterprises... Which is why you see so many review blogs on their comics / mags here at 'ComicBookCollectorsBlog.com'!

However, as I have also said before... Publishing 'anthology' comics has to be one of the hardest things to do...Period!

This anthology's first issue set out very well on the Front Cover, and definitely caught my interest!  The setting of the Table of Contents page was well done, and showed that the Production Manager, Marc Haines, as well as the Publisher, Jim Main, wanted to produce a high quality comic.

I've got to say that the majority of the stories fit that bill.  Enough for me to want to see a second issue in this comic book title series.

The concept of this comic book is one that is a good one, although it has been used before.  However, the totally different artwork in almost each story presented from each other didn't help to jell this concept together in the first issue for me.

Yet I still enjoyed reading it and it is well worth the $2.99 cover price for fans of this genre of comic book. Please note that the interiors of this comic book are printed in black & white.

Again, the Editor of an anthology comic book such as this one has a hard job in compiling a presentation, let alone using a comic book host such as 'Grimsby'. The first issue is a good representation of this genre, but a little more 'tweaking' in artwork presented will make it even better.

I'm giving this a VERY FINE PLUS (VF+) 8.5 out of a possible 10.0 comic book grade, because of what I just mentioned above.

You can purchase this comic book to see for yourself at the Main Enterprises order page! While you are there... Check out the other publications that have been published to date!

If you need some help on what else to order... Here are several more review blogs I've posted on Main Enterprises publications over the years.

My thanks to Main Publications for submitting this issue for possible review! As I said above... This is a publisher with quality publications, and I'm pleased to see my reviews & re-posts by others at 441 different listings at Google at the time of writing this blog!

TODAY'S FEATURE - Blog #3516:

It's that time of year in the Los Angeles Metro Area that one of the most fun comic cons that I attend is happening once again!

When I say 'happening' it actually takes shape months earlier in preparation for this weekend con, but the results of it take place usually just before or during Halloween Night on the 31st!

Which makes very good promotional sense that the promoters of this con have added 'Horror' to its name this year, as seen by the top right flyer published in this blog!

If the scheduling continues to have this convention occur during this time period, then I think it is a smart move on the part of the con's promoters!

So... I want YOU to definitely mark on your calendars that this con is taking place the two days just before Halloween this year, and attend, like Tina and I will be doing again!

Why?

Well here are just a few photos from the earlier cons, as uploaded at my Facebook Fan Page, Michael D Hamersky On Comics:

2009 LBCC

2010 LBCC 1 Day Expo

2010 LBCC

2011 LBCC 1 Day Expo

2011 LBC&HC (to be added to after the con is over)

So those are just a few of the reasons why this con is a 'MUST' for me to attend!  And you'll notice that I have been to all the LBCC events including the two 1 day Expos since this event started back in 2009.  It's that GOOD of a show to attend!

Plus here are NEW reasons for you to attend this 2 day con:

The 2011 Scheduled Guests

The 2011 Artist Alley Tables

The 2011 Exhibitors

The 2011 Programming Schedule Including 1st time Masquerade Ball

As I said above, when first starting blogging this post... There are many reasons why I haven't missed any of these Cons / Expos that the Long Beach Comic Con promoters have set up! And with the guests / exhibitors / programming for this year... I'm not going to miss this one either!

So about the only thing left is... How do YOU buy tickets?  Well... You could wait till you get there, but why not buy them online now?  At this link:

2011 Long Beach Comic & HoRRoR Con tickets!

Oh, and so that you don't miss any of the as yet unannounced Halloween Tricks or Treats... Here's the Facebook Fan Page for the LBCC, so that you can be interactive with the promoters / attendees for this year's Con and see what else they have in store for this year's Comic and HoRRoR Con!

See YOU there??!!
