TODAY'S FEATURE - Blog #3523:

I've been so busy reading comics and graphic novels that were given to me at the 2011 Comic-Con International San Diego, and other events I've been to, that I have neglected to finish reading the 2011 Comic-Con International San Diego 2011 Souvenir Book.

Well... I remedied that this weekend, and realized that it was a book that I wanted to blog about, as there were several milestones featured in it.

I've already mentioned the 50th Anniversary of Comics Fandom, and blogged about it in blog #3468 with photos. In addition, I posted many of the photos not used in that blog at a special photo album at my Michael D Hamersky On Comics Facebook Fan Page.  The special feature on the same 50th Anniversary in this Souvenir Book is worth the time and effort to read it, even if you haven't been in Comics Fandom for 50 years! It is that good of an article!

I've also mentioned the 50th Anniversary of Fantastic Four #1 at blog #3483. In the feature article in this souvenir book, Mark Alexander presents a really nice story on  "Stan Lee & Jack Kirby: The Wonder Years".  Even though I lived during those years, it was great to revisit it from Mark's POV. Plus the art submitted by others to complement the article was very sharp in presentation style!

The 'Golden Age of Fanzines' feature is a gold mine of info and pics about those early days!  Definitely worth reading to catch up on past history if you are new to comics!  There wasn't an internet back then!

50 Years of 'Spy vs. Spy', which was a feature in MAD Magazine that I always enjoyed!   Sheesh!   50 Years now!   Peter Kuper does a fine job in covering this!

'1986: The Year Comics Grew Up' - which although is NOT one of my favorite periods, (too much grim n gritty since then for my tastes), it still is a watershed year and covered very well by Mark Lucas.

Other feature articles are presented in this special souvenir book, including: '25th Anniversary of Dark Horse Comics', '25th Anniversary of SLG Publishing', '20th Anniversary of the CBLDF', and '20th Anniversary of Bone', but I'm just commenting on the features that were of major interest to myself here in this review.

Returning features inlcuded seeing the 2011 Will Eisner Award Nominees, the 2010 Will Eisner Award Winners, Will Eisner Hall of Fame, the Inkpot Awards, and remembering those in the comics industry or fans of that have passed on since the last souvenir book.

My comic book grade for this year's Souvenir Book is a NEAR MINT (NM) 9.4 out of a possible 10.0 comic book grading scale. My only semi-negative thought is that the 50th Anniversary of the Fantastic Four #1 would have been a more logical choice for the front cover due to the significance of that issue, instead of the JLA... But then again, it is the Editor's choice for cover feature placement.

Once again, this is a Comic-Con Souvenir Book that those interested in comics should not be without!  My thanks to those that were instrumental in publishing this, Gary Sassaman, Jackie Estrada, Fae Desmond, David Glanzer, and others.

If YOU didn't attend this year... I do have extra copies of the 2011 Souvenir Book listed for sale in my online local comic book shop!

TODAY'S FEATURE - Blog #3522:

I want to bring to your attention that the first ever COMIKAZE EXPO will be running November 5th thru 6th at the Los Angeles Convention Center!

As it is with any first time show, there will be many questions as to what the convention is about... What it is exhibiting... What Guests will be there... Who else is attending... etc., etc.

Well, I'm going to list the links that I think are important for you to check out, as the Expo isn't that many days away now!   Only four weekends away, actually!

First, as it is a new show on the convention circuit, I'm going to direct you to the Facebook Fan Page for the Comikaze Expo, where you should direct any questions directly to the con promoters!  They have been pretty good in responding so far to questions that are posted there...

The actual main web page for the Comikaze Expo is shown here.

The web page for Guests of Honor is here. Including Pop Culture guests: Stan Lee & Elvira as the headliners!

Featured Guests page shows that there are several Star Trek: Voyager stars will be there, including Robert Beltran, Jennifer Lein, and Tim Russ.  Plus Erin Gray of Buck Rogers of the 25th Century TV Show will be there!  Who else...?  Take a look at the link to see more!

Writers, Artists, and other Comic Book creators will be there as well, including Wes Huffor, George Chase, and several of the new DC 52 creators.

Interested in gaming tournaments?  Check out this link.

Okay... that's about it right now on upcoming features at this point in time when this blog is posted.

Again, I'm going to suggest that you 'Like' their Facebook Fan Page, to keep up with what else will be happening at this Expo. Which is easier to spot than on their web page.

As for tickets, you can purchase them right now at their ticket web page.

Tina and I are planning to be there both days, taking photos for my own Facebook Fan Page, and additional blog posts afterwards.

The special photo album at my own Facebook Fan Page has been set up here.

Since the Comikaze Expo is the first weekend of November, I suggest that you mark your calendars now, purchase your tickets online, and be set to attend, as first of the month events sometimes sneak up on us way too soon!

As I said above... Tina and I will be there... So we hope to see  YOU there also??!!

TODAY'S FEATURE - Blog #3521:

Last Saturday I blogged about the upcoming Long Beach Comic & HoRRoR Con that is running October 29th & 30th in Long Beach, California.

The con's promoters had just added the 'HoRRoR' title to the name of the con, as the con keeps occuring during the Halloween period.

So I thought to continue this week with review blogs on HoRRor / MoNSTer / Sci-Fi comic books that have been given to me or mailed in for review. Here's the fifth one of this week's reviews:

Which, when looking at the top right photo of this blog post, might seem a little strange by including this title in such a genre of comics...

Yet the way this graphic novel / anthology / comic book unfolds puts it gently into this genre for me! I'll explain why in just a bit. First let me print what the Publisher says about this publication:

"This is a 64 page anthology consisting of 7 different short stories with a "Twilight Zone" flair, but coming from a Biblical perspective. Each story is narrated by a mysterious old man, as he explores the Biblical nature represented within the stories. The stories include an old retired pastor, who attends a very unique college reunion only to find a special surprise awaiting him. Another story involves a man who realizes that being the "best" is sometimes not good enough; Especially when approaching the Throne of God. This will be an ongoing series, with new stories every issue."

Okay... So now you can start to see why I'm including this graphic novel formatted comic book into this genre!

Just like the first comic book that was reviewed during this special week, (The Attic #1 from Main Enterprises), this publication also has a series host.  In addition, just like 'The Attic', this is an anthology title.  Plus the stories presented, although religiously oriented... Come across with a mix of 'HoRRoR' / 'Sci-Fi' twists and turns.

Yes, it is a 'strange' kind of mix for a presentation, especially with the front cover which looks at a first quick glance seems to be not of that genre...!

You would have to do a little bit more than just glance at the front cover to get the fact that 'The Kingdom Zone' inside is going to be more of a 'The Twilight Zone' presentation.

The inside front cover is the 'Table of Contents' page, which would have been a little more insightfull if the 'creators credits' had been included.  This page just shows the page number... And the 'story title', with no credits.

The first page is used a 'splash page', which was good when introducing the host of the stories being presented in this issue.

'The World's Best Person' is written and illustrated by Brian Bradley, who is also the Editor and Publisher.

Which is followed by the story '7 Days', written by Brian Bradley and illustrated by Jeremy Atkins.

The third story 'The Time...' is written by Brian Bradley and illustrated by multiple artists, including Hal Jones, Kathleen Webb, Rob Marsh, and Frank Humprhies among others.  That's because each page is separately illustrated, by one of the illustrators.

Page 31 starts the fourth story, again with art and story by Brian Bradley.

Page 43 is also a story titled 'Barabass' with art and story by Brian Bradley, which is based on a short story by an unknown author.

'The Guillotine' starts on page 48, with a story by Brian Bradley, and art by 'Just Mike'.

The final story starts on page 56, and is titled 'Go to Hades', with story by George Macas and art by Rob Marsh.

Okay... The reason I listed the above stories with the titles and credits, is to help explain why I'm including this 'graphic novel formatted comic book' in with the others I've review blogged during this week's theme.

When I first opened the package that this came in, I kind of got the idea of what might be in the interior pages from the cover, as the title 'The Kingdom Zone' was in a different font and did 'hit me' with being close to 'The Twilight Zone' in presentation.  Especially with the black & white cover.  It was the golden cross that kind of threw me off at first as to what I had in my hands...

But upon turning the cover and seeing the table of contents and splash page.. I quickly got the idea of what the Editor / Publisher was striving for.

Did he make it in covering the 'look' he was aiming for in this publication?

For me... I appreciated the effort to take these stories and present them in such a way as to appeal to a different reading audience that what one would think the stories would normally be produced for.

The table of contents could / should have included the creators credits in my opinion, especially as there was enough room on the inside front cover to do so.

The 'host' of the stories, who was first introduced on the 'splash / first' page, was a good idea to use, similar to having Rod Serling introduce stories on 'The Twilight Zone', both on the TV show and in the comic books that were based on the TV show.  So I liked that use of a 'host'.

The stories that were published were well presented, and so was the dialogue.

As with any anthology comic book or graphic novel that is published, it is always hard to have a certain 'feel' or 'look' with the stories and artwork presented.

In this publication, I found that the stories presented all fit the 'feel', but the artwork didn't always work for me.  The 'look' of the artwork in almost all of the stories was a little bit too 'underground comix' look for me.

I don't say that in a 'negative' sort of way... Because as long time readers of this Blog know... I have reviewed blogged several underground comix here.

It's just that the artwork in total didn't quite 'jell' for me when taking these stories and mixing them with a 'Twilight Zone' sort of presentation.

I liked the idea / concept of this publication, and the stories presented.  However, being a reader of the original 'The Twilight Zone' comic books published by Gold Key Comics, from 1962 - 1979... I believe that the execution of the artwork presented in this volume would have been better presented in a more 'realistic' art style similiar to the Gold Key Comics, rather than an 'underground comix' artstyle.

Again, as I have stated here many time before... Reviewing anthology comics is one of the hardest things to do being a reviewer.  I do believe that the artwork presented in this publication is all in the same style that the Editor wanted.  There are no jarring styles conflicting with each other in this publication.  The artwork presented in each story here meshes quite well with the others.  So if this art style is one that you enjoy, then the concept and execution would be just fine for you, as it is a good representation of the art style mixed with the stories presented.

The opinion expressed above is just my own personal taste after reading the publication from cover to cover, and watching where the Editor / Publisher took this.

So... I'm giving this a VERY FINE (VF) 8.0 out of a possible 10.0 comic book grade, because of what I just mentioned above...

Where can you find this for sale?

You can find this publication with a color cover, with black and white interior pages at this Kingdom Comics web site link.

While you are there... Take a look at this comic book that was previously review blogged in this Blog, 'Faith Boy #1'.   Here is my son's review link on it, plus a comment from me with my comic book grade, and here is the link to purchase it directly from the publisher.

I want to add the following that is found on the web site about Kingdom Comics:

"Kingdom Comics is a Christian comic book publishing company. Through the publication and distribution of our printed materials, it is our mission to spread the Gospel of Jesus Christ. By presenting the Gospel in comic book format, we are able to reach a culture that may otherwise be unreached. While this includes adolescence and young adults, it has also included those incarcerated. In addition, our books have been used as teaching tools for youth ministries.

Kingdom Comics publishes comic book for entertainment, as well. Some books are more subtle in the Christian message than others; however, we always strive to offer stories of an uplifting and interesting nature. We attempt to offer comic books that are the alternative to what currently passes for mainstream. This includes comic books about superheroes, as well as comic books dealing with everyday people dealing with everyday circumstances."

For additional info and to be interactive with others interested in this Publisher's publications, feel free to 'Like' The Facebook Fan Page for Kingdom Comics.

Thanks to Publisher Brian Bradley for bringing this issue #1 to my attention!

TODAY'S FEATURE - Blog #3520:

This past Saturday I blogged about the upcoming Long Beach Comic & HoRRoR Con that is running October 29th & 30th in Long Beach, California.

The con's promoters had just added the 'HoRRoR' title to the name of the con, as the con keeps occuring during the Halloween period.

So I thought to continue this week with review blogs on HoRRor / MoNSTer / Sci-Fi comic books that have been given to me or mailed in for review. Here's the fourth one of this week's reviews:

The photo at the top left of this blog is of Geo Brawn IV at his table in Artists Alley at the recent 2011 San Diego Comic Con.  He is shown holding a copy of this 'graphic novel' that I'm reviewing here today.

This isn't the first time I've mentioned Geo either here or at my Facebook Fan Page, as seen via this link.

I've read this graphic novel earlier, but as usual after attending the largest comic con in the Northern Hemisphere... I've been a little backed up in review blogging all those comics / graphic novels / TPBs that I was given there.  This was the perfect week to post a review on this graphic novel.

That's because this is definitely a 'HoRRoR' graphic novel.  The preview edition comic book said this about the storyline:

"Gwen had no idea what she was in for when she became a vampire in the year 2072 AD. Until she was drafted into this team as apart of a great prophecy. Soon she learns the line between good and evil is not always black and white, but yet is always a wild, sinister ride.

This is a Story that depicts an order of supernatural beings,(vampires, werewolves, witches, demons, etc.), who are sworn to fight the forces of Evil that prey on the unsuspecting mortals of this world. Known as Blood Rites, they've continued the fight since the dawn of time."

Blood Rites:Next Gen. TM and © Geo BRAWN IV. All rights reserved.

Okay... That is just one of the features in this graphic novel, but you get the picture as to what the creator is showing in this Book Two.

As for my thoughts:

Front Cover -  The words 'Blood Rites' in the color red lets the casual browser into knowing what this book is probably about.  Plus adding the images of five females on the front cover adds to what the main characters will be like.

Inside Front Cover - A 'Credits Page' / 'Thank You Page' to the creators supporters in this endeavor. Okay...

First Page - The start of a three page intro

Fourth Page - Chapter One - The Kat... which continues into more pages and stories.

The artwork is black & white, which is fine, because the 'blood red color' might be a little overwhelming for the faint of heart.

The storyline is a compilation of many stories, and the chapters seem to overlap and run into each other.  Being a creation of one man who is both writer & artist of this series, this book takes you where he wants to go...

Where that exactly is, I don't know, even after reading the whole book.  Geo has been developing his multiple stories into a collection of graphic novels known as The Untold Chronicles, and this Book Two is 'Blood Rites'.  Back on October 14th of 2010 I review blogged Book One, as seen here in Blog #3256.

So, if there is an end story to this 'Untold Chronicles' series, I don't know what it is...!  However if this genre of story is one that you enjoy reading in comic book illustrated format, this one is up there in providing you the thrills and chills that you would be looking for!

Geo illustrates women very well.  He also has the shades / blacks / tones when illustrating down as well.  This book is done very artistically in black & white. No need for color interior pages.

What I would like to see in the next book is an 'outline' of sorts that ties together Book One, Two & Three when it is published.  As to what all these stories tie in together as.

I'm sure that I could find more answers at his web site, or Facebook Group Page, or elsewhere, but I'd like to see it published in Book Three when that comes to print.  I'm 'Old School' that way, where if a publication is in print, then the characters bios etc., should be in print also.  But that's my opinion from over fifty years of reading comics...

In the meantime... I'm giving this a VERY FINE / VERY FINE PLUS (VF/VF+) 8.25 out of a possible 10.0 comic book grade, because of what I just mentioned above.

If you don't see this graphic novel at your LCBS... You can purchase it at: Untold Chronicles: Blood Rites.

If you missed Book One... Here's a place to purchase it online: The Untold Chronicles-Everdance: A Blood Story.

If you are in the Los Angeles Metro Area, then you can also buy both books at his table at the upcoming ComiKaze on November 5th & 6th!

Thanks again to Geo Brawn IV for bringing this Book Two to my attention at the 2011 SDCC!

TODAY'S FEATURE - Blog #3519:

This past Saturday I blogged about the upcoming Long Beach Comic & HoRRoR Con that is running October 29th & 30th in Long Beach, California.

The con's promoters had just added the 'HoRRoR' title to the name of the con, as the con keeps occuring during the Halloween period.

So I thought to continue this week with review blogs on HoRRor / MoNSTer / Sci-Fi comic books that have been given to me or mailed in for review. Here's the third one of this week's reviews:

Scarlet Huntress #2 - Photo Cover Variant!

I've review blogged the Scarlet Huntress Preview Issue before in blog #3232 back in September of 2010.  So I was looking forward to seeing how the 2nd issue of this series turned out in print...

Here's what I found when reading the comic book:

Front Cover -  I received the photo cover variant to possibly review.  I usually like female characters with live models on the front cover... And this photo cover variant was no exception!  She came across exactly as what the creator, Sean Forney, had illustrated in the Preview issue I had review blogged earlier!

Inside Front Cover - Showed that there were three different covers to this issue #2, which I am not usually a fan of... Unless there are only two covers, with one a photo cover.  There were additional credits and links shown on this inside front cover, which was used as a 'credits page'.

Splash Page - Not used as a 'splash page', but rather as page one of the story.

Interior Pages - Tells the following story:  "After running away for two years due to the death of her mother, Scarlet returns hoping to move on with her life. Instead her plans change when she learns of a secret family legacy that will change her life forever. Through her grandmother Scarlet learns of a hidden world full of evil, werewolves, and huntresses. Now Scarlet must decide if she can truly complete her first kill as a Huntress."

After 24 pages of story, which are printed in black & white, there are 2 pages of color pin-ups, 3 pages of black & white pin-ups, and then a color photo page of the model as 'Scarlet Huntress', with a house ad page of the Scarlet Huntress as a 'game'.

The Inside Back Cover is a color ad...

The Back Cover is a color pin up page of the Scarlet Huntress.

So what's my take on this 2nd issue?

I found that the cover variant I received was a nice touch in having the character jump out at me when first looking at it.  The model fit the image that Sean had illustrated over a year ago in the Preview issue.

The inside cover page was okay, but could have been laid out a little better for reading.

The interior pages, in black and white, were fine... UNTIL I came to the color pin up pages!

I'm not a 'color snob'... But after seeing those pages in color, this comic book could be far easier to read AND sell to a wider audience range.

What I viewed in the Scarlet Huntress Preview comic that I review blogged last year, is turning out to be a good comic book series.  But seriously... The next issue should be looked at closely as printing in color...

So... I'm giving this a VERY FINE / NEAR MINT (VF/NM) 9.0 out of a possible 10.0 comic book grade, because of what I just mentioned above.

If you don't see this comic book at your LCBS... You can purchase this comic issue #2 in a digital format at Graphicly at this link. Or check out the SM Comics web site for it.

To be interactive with Sean Forney and / or his wife Stephanie Forney, who is the writer of this issue, you can 'Like' their Facebook Fan Page at: Sean Forney Illustration!

Thanks again to Sean & Stephanie Forney for bringing this issue #2 to my attention!
