TODAY'S FEATURE - Blog #3559:

I had just finished posting today's blog, (#3558), when I saw the announcement that Mr. Jerry Robinson had passed.

Having the pleasure of meeting Jerry a few times at comic cons, and at an after con event, I wanted to post a brief blog about his passing today, instead of waiting for tommorrow.

Also, I had had the delight in seeing several of his own personal comic books related items a couple of years back, (February 21st of 2009), when his traveling exhibit, 'Zap! Pow! Bam!' was on the West Coast, in Los Angeles.  As seen in this two part blog from our visit during the Opening Weekend to the Skirball Museum. Part 1 & Part 2.

Jerry Robinson's contributions to comic books was vast, as seen at this link to the his credits listed in the GCD (Grand Comics Database)!

You can read more about Jerry's life in the wiki entry on the Wikipedia web site.

My condolences to Jerry's family & friends.

His contributions to comics will not be forgotten, nor will he, the man...!

TODAY'S FEATURE - Blog #3558:

Last year on this date, December 8th of 2010, I had finished posting my addendum on 'Comics Related Gifts For The Holidays - Part 2', as seen at blog #3298.

This year, due to taking the time to take a road trip to attend to a family member who is in the hospital for a surgery, and because eBay has another listing sale December 6th - 7th - 8th, I've had to skip posting blogs for a few days, just to keep current as possible with my other endeavors.

So, right now, I'm going to mention that I'm going to do this a little differently than I did last year... Or the years before.

I've already started a photo album at my Facebook 'Fan' Page, 'Michael D Hamersky On Comics', where I've been posting a photo and links to comics / graphic novels / TPBs / books on comics that I have reveiwed for 2011.

Yes, it is not complete, but at least there you can visually see the items before clicking the links to read the reviews.   That link is shown here, which I suggest you click.

Due to time constraints, I'm not going to repeat myself here, other than to point out just one of the items here, because of a new edition that just came out this month.

I'm emphasizing the revised first edition of the book that I was one of fourteen essayists in, that was published in December of 2010, that not everyone was able to a copy of in time for last year's Gift Giving Season.

That would be the 'Gotham City 14 Miles' book, which just came out with a $7.00 lower cover price, at $15.99 + shipping where applicable.  Here is the link to my review blog part 2 when I first reviewed it

Also, for those of you in the Los Angeles Metro Area, Saturday December 10th... I personally am going to be at the upcoming Nuke The Fridge Con in the City of Industry this upcoming Saturday to sell a few signed copies. My signature only, as the other essaysists are somewhat scattered throughout the world. For fans of the 1966 Batman TV Show, starring Adam West & Burt Ward, this is a 'Must Read', in my opinion. Period.  And yes, I'm a little prejudiced in favor of it, but... Take a look at the names of the other essayists involved with the book, and you will see what a quality project it was to produce.

As for the link I provided above, and repeated here, for other items for possible purchase for gift giving... First let me tell you, that I don't take the time to review blog anything that doesn't at least 'grade' a Very Fine (VF) 8.0 in my opinion.

I'm given a LOT of items to possibly review blog, and each of these blogs take 1 - 2+ hours to write / scan photos / & post.  I'm not going to spend my time to write negative reviews, when that is not always constructive for the creators, nor is it a meaningful use of my time

So take a look at the link to the photo album, place your cursor on the individual photos, each has an 'alt' message, as to the title of the item, and a little bit on the item, and then left click the photo to read more of it, and there is a link to corresponding blog for the item, that shows the full review.

The genres covered there are wide ranging, as usual. From 'funnybooks' to 'underground comix', as my own personal tastes are varied. I also include items that while not my own personal favorite genre, I find are so well produced that they are darn good in their genre.

I'll be adding more review blogs in the days to follow, as time permits, what with the family member still in the hospital, a book signing at a comic con to attend this Saturday, and other obligations to take care of between now and Christmas Day, as well as the other Holidays.

Thank you for reading this blog post, and I hope that some of my suggestions / recommendations already posted from this year 2011 will help you find that special something for a family member / friend that is hard to shop for, but loves reading sequential art format publications / books!

Merry Christmas & Happy Holidays to All!

TODAY'S FEATURE - Blog #3557:

Thanks to my wife, Tina LoSasso, for posting news of this upcoming event yesterday at her own Facebook Fan Page for her business, Make It So Marketing Inc.!  Tina conducts online book launches for authors, as well as other promotions, including social media campaigns, so she is more aware of what is happening in the 'book world' than I am.

Quite honestly, I wasn't aware of this 'Day', even though I'm made aware of several special 'Days' each year by Facebook Friends and other industry members in comics!

So, this is going to be a short blog today, so that you can read more about this event on the Day's own web site, and see their own Facebook group page.

First, what's this all about? Here's what the web site has:

"Bookstores hold a place in the hearts and times of our community. They are places to discover an author, a story, a life. Nothing affords the conversation and interaction among books and book lovers that a bookstore does. In the future, whether you download your story or pluck a volume off a shelf, a bookstore will be able to accommodate. But in order for bookstores to flourish and thrive, we must expose future generations to the unique pleasures they offer. On December 3rd, 2011, take the child in your life to a bookstore. Watch his face light up as you give him free access, not just to a new book, but to tomorrow." —Jenny Milchman

Sounds like fun!  So, Tina and I will be taking my youngest child to a bookstore in our area.  On the world map with the names & addresses of the bookstores that are participating, as seen here, there are three stores in our immediate area that are celebrating this 2nd Annual celebration.  They are Mysterious Galaxy in San Diego, Warwick's in La Jolla, and The Book Works in Del Mar. Hopefully there is one in your area to attend?!

The web site for the 'Take Your Child To A Bookstore' is seen here.

Plus there is a Facebook group page, that you can read what is going on.  There are currently 149 members in this 'open group'. I'm not for sure of the criteria to be accepted into the group as of this blog posting.  I just sent in my request for acceptance.

Plus, the founder of this special day, Jenny Milchman, has her own web site, as seen here, that you can check out further.

I believe I've covered the links that will transport you to this relatively new event day. Feel free to let me know what you found near your city should you decide to participate, at my own Facebook Fan Page, 'Michael D Hamersky On Comics', where I also cover books about comics, graphic novels, and TPBs (trade paperbacks), as well as comic books!

-
Top Photo left column:  Dahveed Kolodny-Nagy with Michael D Hamersky during the recent 2011 ComiKaze Expo in Los Angeles!

TODAY'S FEATURE - Blog #3556:

At the recent 2011 ComiKaze Expo in Los Angeles, I ran into Dahveed Kolodny-Nagy, (aka Captain Zack Stevers, a wannabe rock ‘n roll pirate at Supa Pirate Booty Hunt).

As usual, Dahveed was full of energy and was promoting his web show, Supa Pirate Booty Hunt.

He and Steven Sievers, (aka Daniel the Turtle on the same show), have been at almost every Los Angeles Metro Area convention that I have been to, PLUS a LOT more!

I've always thought that they should have published a comic book for the show.  Well, they have!  And it is only available to those that contribute a certain amount to their Kickstarter Fundraiser, which ENDS TODAY!

First, I'm going to mention the comic book. It is a promotional comic book, in that it is a 'flip book', with two different comic book covers. The one shown above is the one with just the Pirate (Dahveed's alter ego), which he and the additional artist, Richard Gaines, signed for me while at the convention.

The other comic book front cover has the Pirate & Daniel the Turtle along with a few other characters.  Each cover is followed by four pages of story, and then an ad page separating that flip side from the other.

Again, this is a promotional comic book, which is the reason for the short amount of interior pages.

So what's the promo for?

The promo comic book was for 'Music Saves Lives', but five copies were reserved for the Kickstarter Fundraiser.  Here's what it is in Dahveed's own words:  "The Supa Pirate Booty Hunt #1 comic book – SIGNED and sketched on by both creators (Steve Sievers and myself) and voice god Spike Spencer, the voice behind Captain Zack Stevers. Full color! Beautiful art! Two full stories! Mint condition! Now this comic is so rare that it cannot be bought anywhere in any store. It was only given out at select events and blood donation centers to donors. Yes, you heard me right! You had to give BLOOD to get this book! But now I am parting with my LAST COPIES!!!"

I usually go into my own spiel after stating what the comic book is about... Something like this:  "So what's 'My Take' on this comic book after reading it?", but today I'm only going to mention that it is one of the five that Dahveed has left for the Kickstarter Fundraiser!  No Review, as when these copies are spoken for... It is gone!

So I won't be giving you my comic book grade for this promotional issue!

Instead... Here are the links for you to check this project out further:

The KickStarter funding program is titled: Dave Mustaine (Megadeth) & Supa Pirate Booty Hunt, and needs YOU to help get it get fully funded as it ENDS TODAY!  As of 'press time' here at my blog: It has raised $1402 so far... And... "This project will only be funded if at least $2,500 is pledged by Thursday Dec 1, 9:52pm EST.  So please, take a moment and see if this Kickstarter funding program is one you would like to contribute to!

You can see the following and a lot more, including the thank you gifts for contribution levels at the Kickstarter site, but I wanted to at least post a little here so you understand what the fundraiser is for, and click through to it:

"Supa Pirate Booty Hunt is an independent animated webseries about the adventures of Captain Zack Stevers, a wannabe rock ‘n roll pirate, and Daniel the turtle as they search the seas for what else booty. Our previous episodes can be viewed at SupaPirateBootyHunt.com.  Our last episode just won 6 awards at the Burbank International Film Festival.

But our upcoming episode promises to reach new heights and for that we need the help of our friends at Kickstarter!  Our new episode “Metal In My Shell” will feature Dave Mustaine of Megedeath who will face off against Zack and Daniel in a rock-off that will warp the boundaries of time and space!!

Why We Need Your Support:  Animation is a very time consuming endeavor.  As an independent studio we have no backing and everyone has been putting in their time for free.  We hope to eventually bring the show to television but first need to build up a large audience.  To do that we need to produce episodes independently and offer them for free online but that can only be done with the support of generous backers. Although we have come very far we still have a long way to go."

Again, here is the link to the KickStarter fund raiser site, where you can contribute starting from $1.00 !

Also, here is the Facebook event page for the Kickstarter fundraiser, where you can be interactive with Dahveed & Steven and others.

My thanks again to Dahveed for bringing this to my attention during the 2011 ComiKaze Expo!   Good luck on reaching the Fund Raising Goal!

THE ITEMS ENDING SOONEST at my own online comic book shop!

-

TODAY'S FEATURE - Blog #3555:

Whew!  Am I tired this morning!

At 6PM PST last night, I shut down my laptop after hosting my 3rd Annual event after Thanksgiving!

That's because the event had grown from a 1 day event back in 2009 hosted by my Facebook group page, Facebook Comic Con | Make It So Marketing, to a 4 day event hosted by 'Michael D Hamersky On Comics' (my Facebook fan page), and 'Make It So Marketing Inc', (Tina LoSasso's Facebook fan page for her business).

The 'Free Gifts' DOUBLED in number from 2010's 11 Free Gifts to this year's 22 Free Gifts!  Which basically averaged out at 5 Free Gifts distributed on Black Friday & Small Business Saturday; with 6 each on Sunday and Cyber Monday!

You wouldn't think that giving away 22 Free Gifts would take that much time, but I wanted to make sure that each of the Donators of the Free Gifts received as much 'web exposure' as possible, for participating in this 3rd annual online event of mine!

So basically, between listing the Free Gifts, replying to those that messaged me about the event, promoting  the event, promoting the free gifts, proclaiming the recipients of the free gifts, etc., etc., I was glad that I had already listed 4,700+ items in my online comic book shop, (at ComicBooksCircus.com), because there wasn't time to list many more during the event!  I was also sending invoices out to buyers, while combining the items bought for combined shipping rates, and answering questions about shipping, combined shipping, print editions, etc.!

I believe that is why I shut down last night at a little after 6PM PST, when the last Free Gift was announced!  Even though the event was shown as ending t 9PM PST, when the last of the auction listing at my online comic book shop were ending...  As all that time at the keyboard, my eyes were getting a little hazy!

Anyways, as I have done each year of this event, I learned more on how to better conduct an online event. I hope to use the now past three annual events to conduct an even better 2012 event... But more on that next year!

Right now I want to thank ALL of the Donators of the Free Gifts! I do appreciate all of you very much! Thank you for doing this! The list of donators, the Free Gifts donated, and links to their own websites or web pages are shown in this link!   The exposure you received at the event continues on, as those Facebook web pages will be exposed to even more web users in the months to follow, as I do submit them manually to search engines along with my other pages!

I next want to thank ALL of those persons that clicked the 'Attending' / 'Going' link at the event page itself.  Facebook changed the event page format just before the event started from 'Attending / Maybe / Not Attending / Invited' to a format shown of 'Going / Maybe / Invited'.  Once again, another Facebook change!

I want to also thank ALL of those that clicked the 'Maybe' link at the event page. I appreciate that, but again I want to point out that clicking 'Maybe' did not make you 'eligible' for receiving a 'Free Gift', as stated in the 'More Info' section of the event page. I do appreciate the clicking 'Maybe', and realize that some didn't want to receive a 'Free Gift', but wanted to show support for my event anyways!

As for those that clicked the 'Not Attending' link, I'm sure that you have your reasons for doing so. You may have thousands of Facebook Friends, (like I do), and are bombarded with invite requests. However,  I heard after the previous two annual events from those that had thought it was a 'real world' event, and couldn't make it there physically.  I even had comments on my event page during those two past events that persons couldn't attend because they were too far away... Which I explained it was a 'virtual world' event, and have since deleted their comments so as not to embarass them at the event page that doesn't go away in time. There was no cost to attend any of the now three annual events, and the standard 'No Purchase Necessary' was placed as often on the event page / list of free gifts / wall posts / etc., as possible during the days before, and during the event.

That leaves the persons that didn't click anything. I do know that Facebook keeps making 'changes' every so often, and some people, (including me!), have to figure out how to adjust to those 'changes'. So I have to work harder to make the event more enticing to click the 'Going' link, without endless spamming to do so.  Plus, I do know that Facebook has made changes in communications between Facebook Friends, so possibly several hundred didn't even realize that the event was going on, while I had one person tell me that he was a  little perturbed at seeing my wall posts so often on his Facebook Feed!  Facebook does need to stop making so many changes!

And for those of you that are were not Facebook Friends, and clicked the 'Going' link at the event page and the 'LIKE' button at my Facebook fan page to make yourselves eligible, I thank you for that!  Including previous customers of my web site, ComicBooksCircus.com, who I attempted to email as many as possible!

As for the recipients of the 'Free Gifts'... who are listed on this web page, I'm making every effort to obtain your email and mailing address from you so that the donator of the free gift can ship the free gift directly to you! There are only four of the free gifts that I either have on hand, given to me by the donator at a comic con, or are in transit to me by the publisher / promoter.  The other 18 free gifts are coming direct from the donators, so please give them time to ship the free gift package to you!

Well... It's time to get back to 'normal' here at 'Michael D Hamersky On Comics'... Whatever 'normal' is when you operate out of a 'home business'!

Wrapping up the 2011 Black Friday / Cyber Monday online event... I want to say it was a lot of fun, a lot of work, and I'm glad I had such good Facebook Friends who donated their items as free gifts this year, as they went to a lot of others who will treasure those free gifts, either keeping them for themselves, or in turn giving them away as presents during this holiday season to their friends or family members!

Happy Holidays, everyone!
