Christmas has always been the most wonderful time of the year for my family.

My Dad would dress up as Santa. My Uncle would go up on the roof, bang on the gutters and yell, "Ho, ho, ho!". and my Grandma would sing the entire Mitch Miller Christmas Album with us.

My wish for you this holiday season is that you create new wonderful memories with family and friends.

Merry Christmas to all!

TODAY'S FEATURE - Blog #3569:

I knew ahead of time that I wanted to stop at the Gopher-It Productions table at the 2011 Long Beach Comic Con (LBCC)!

That's because I had clicked the 'Like' button at the Facebook Fan Page, and clicked the 'attending' link at the event page.  Always nice to be rewarded for doing so!  So I made sure to have Ambrose's table number circle on my list to stop at!

In addition I checked out his Special Edition which is the print format from his web comic. Ambrose had made the decision to put into print what he had previously published on line for free. Which is one way to capitalize on all the hard work in producing an online comic strip.

So what's this comic book all about? Here's what the creator / publisher has for the promo info:

Written and Illustrated by Ambrose Quintanilla IV

Standard Comic
 Full Color
 Page Count: 32
 POD

Enter the world of cartoonist Ambrose Quintanilla IV as he takes you on a fun filled ride through his mind with five different comic strip titles based on Pop Culture, Corny Jokes, Funny Animals, Married Life and the adventures of a Dad & his son. The collection not only brings together the best of the first year of comics from the facebook.com/Gopherit fanpage but contains four exclusive full page comic strips as well as eight exclusive pages of material just for this Special Edition.

Gopher-It Productions - The Comic Strip Collection: Volume 1 Special Edition collects web comic strips from Ambrose Quintanilla IV's facebook fan page at facebook.com/Gopherit along with eight pages of bonus material.

So what did I think of it?

Well... The front cover definitely caught my eyes!  As there appeared to be quite a few features inside, judging from that cover!

Turning that cover over to the inside front cover showed that Ambrose had his act together... Because he provided an introduction to himself, as well as what was in store for purchasers of the comic book.

What would have been the 'splash page' of the comic book, was actually used as one of the strips for 'Me & The Kid' feature. The next few pages were from the same series of the strip.

Then there were four pages from the strip 'Hitched'.  Followed by two pages of 'Severe Head Trauma'.  Then two pages of 'Ferret Island', and other features.

With this as the 'Special Edition', there were eight additional pages of content.

I found this compilation of strips being published in hard copy to be a fun read!  I'm glad that Ambrose showed those features in special illustrations on the front cover, to give an idea of what was inside!

My comic book grade for this comic book is a VERY FINE / NEAR MINT (VF/NM) 9.0 out of a 10.0 comic book grading scale.

Here is the link to purchase a copy of the 32 page Special Edition.

Here is the link to purchase a copy of the 24 page standard edition.

Here is the link to the Facebook Fan Page for Gopher-It Productions.

Lastly, this is the link to the web site for Gopher It Comics.

BTW, Ambrose used my photo of him and myself shown above at this blog post, plus others from elsewhere at his Long Beach Comic Con photo album at his web site, as seen here in this link.

My thanks again to Ambrose for bringing this comic book of his to my attention at the 2011 Long Beach Comic Con!  A great idea to have Facebookers come and stop by your table for a free sketch card!  I have used the same method for my clients this year also!

Top Photo Left Column:  A Close Up of The Front Cover to that same TPB (trade paperback)!

TODAY'S FEATURE - Blog #3568:

I hadn't actually read a copy of 'Love and Capes' before meeting Thomas F Zahler at the 2011 Long Beach Comic Con, (aka LBCC).

Of course I had heard of the series, and had even seen him at a comic con before, with lots of attendees at his table at those times.

Tina and I actually caught Thomas during a very brief lull at his table during the 2011 LBCC, where the top right photo was shot.

After talking with Thomas briefly about his series, he showed me a copy of Vol 2, the TPB (trade paperback) of the collected series.

So what exactly is in Vol 2?  Here's a brief promo:

"The Crusader and Abby are going to the chapel, and they're gonna get married! Along the way, though, there will be secret wars, evil twins, earthquakes, disasters, and the Crusader's ex-girlfriend, Amazonia. It's wedding planning, super hero-style! Collects issues #7-12 of the Harvey-nominated series."

Okay... So I started reading this TPB, thinking that coming in at issue #7 of the series, (see this link from GCD for the entire Love and Capes series), that I could have trouble catching up with it...

Well, I didn't have any real trouble catching up with the storyline!

I quickly picked up on who was whom, and how they fit into the storyline.  A nice collected story arc, and the artwork was darn good too!

Quite often when a comics creator has this much control over an intellectual property, it goes off track or derails partway through a story arc.  However, not in this story arc!

I found it to be exactly what it stated on the front cover on the TPB:  "The Heroically Super Situation Comedy".  Yes, indeed!

I would actually think of giving this to a person who does not like 'superhero' comic books, as even though it has superheroes throughout the pages, there aren't mindless slugfests or inane plots on conquering the world.

Yet, I would even think of giving this to a person that likes 'superheroes' because it reminds me of the 'Lois & Clark' style of presenting superheroes on TV.  Not that it copies anything, but this TPB gets more into the lives of the superhero and his girlfriend than a 'mainstream super hero comics' would.  Which I found refreshing!  I looked forward to reading each chapter (comic book issue) separately at each reading.

So my comic book grade for this TPB is a NEAR MINT MINUS (NM-) 9.2 out of a possible 10.0 comic book grading scale.

That's because although there are features at the end of the TPB on this story arc, there wasn't an 'intro' to the characters at the front of the TPB, other than a general 'intro' by Kurt & Ann Busiek.  To have new readers, like me, get totally involved and want to purchase Vol 1 or even Vol 3, there should be character bios / illustrations or even a mini-review of what happened in Vol 1 to make the new reader want to know what happened prior to this story arc. As this TPB Vol 2 is almost a 'done in one' compilation, there isn't the immediate desire to want to rush out and purchase the other volumes, after reading this one.  Which has both a good point to it as well, as some readers don't like 'continued' story lines in a TPB. Marketing is always a little tricky, as the 'floppy' publication format (comic book) doesn't always blend into a 'compilation' format, (TPB).  In this case, other than that minor point I'm making, this TPB is worth purchasing and sharing with family / friends.

Speaking of purchasing... Yes, it's a little late for a Christmas present, unless you have a bookstore near you where you could pick up a copy. However, if it isn't a rush order...

Here is the link to purchase a copy online:  Love and Capes Volume 2!

My thanks again to Thomas for bringing this TPB of his to my attention at the 2011 Long Beach Comic Con!

TODAY'S FEATURE - Blog #3567:

I was driving back last night from Los Angeles Metro Area, after making sure that my Great Uncle Howard was transferred in okay to the rehab center after his two recent surgeries...

On the way back I heard on the radio that today,Tuesday December 20th of 2011, would be the 1st day of Chanukkah, which reminded me that I wanted to post a special blog on Chanukkah and Comics this year.

For those of you that are not aware of the dates of Chanukkah this year, Hanukkah begins in the evening of Tuesday, December 20, 2011, and ends in the evening of Wednesday, December 28, 2011.  (Note: I will be using both spellings of Chanukkah / Hanukkah in this blog post.)

I have spent two hours this morning researching the topic of Chanukkah and Comics. I was amazed at the lack of comic books that even have a story titled Chanukkah / Hanukkah in them, let alone a mention on a comic book cover!

Especially after knowing how many Jewish-Americans were a major part at the start of the comic book format in the 1930s! Totally shocking to me as to the lack of stories. I did find references to 'The Thing', my favorite Marvel superhero as being Jewish... but even the 'holiday specials' printed by Marvel Comics have just a mention of Hanukkah in them, but no title / cover that I could find.

I finally ended up thinking about 'Shaloman', created by Al Wiesner. I met him and his wife at the 2010 SDCC, as shown in the top right photo of this blog post. I figured at least he had to have a story title with Hanukkah in it, if not a comic book cover on his Shaloman comics... And he did! So Al gets the featured photo and the inset photo for this blog post!

Again, the lack of Hanukkah stories / comic book cover is rather sad, considering the history of those that first started comic books. I'm hoping that other comic books published in the future at least use the name in a comic bood title. The only one that shows up in the Grand Comics Database, (GCD) is a story in the holiday Tick 1997 comic book... as seen here.

My thanks to Al Wiesner for showing me this issue at the 2010 San Diego Comic Con.  Here is the background history of his Shaloman Comics. He has been at this quest for several years.  Pictured to the left is Al during the mid 1990s.

You can see more of his comics at the GCD in this link. Plus you can purchase back issues at several Jewish bookstores in person, or online via those bookstores websites.

You could also check out Al Wiesner's Mark I Comics via mail order, as there is no web site.  The address is: Mark I Comics, PO Box 5097, Philadelphia, PA 19111.

That's it for now... This took me quite a while longer to research / blog than I thought it would, for sure!

Happy Chanukkah & Happy Holidays to You!

TODAY'S FEATURE - Blog #3566:

It's starting to feel like Christmas around here... Which is hard to do sometimes living in the San Diego area, with no snow!

But Tina LoSasso, Vinnie, and I watched the colorized version of my favorite Christmas film, "It's a Wonderful Life" on Saturday night, and then we went to my folks on Sunday for our 'Christmas' celebration, as Vinnie will be with his mother during the Christmas Day weekend.

Of course, Tina has her own favorite Christmas film, a 1964 film titled:  'Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer', which a scene from it is shown in the top left of this blog post!   Plus I started off the text here with an ad from 1964 advertising it!

Here is the Wikipedia entry as to the background on the film, which seems to be shown every year also on TV!

Around our house, it isn't Christmas until we have seen both of those films, plus Tina's other favorite... 'How The Grinch Stole Christmas'!  Tina can almost recite the entire dialogue of that one... line by line!

Of course, it wouldn't be a comic book blog without a reference to comic books... So I'm including one of the dozen Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer Comics from DC Comics that were published from 1950 - 1962, as seen here!

I have to get ready to make a drive to see my Great Uncle Howard, who thankfully has been discharged from the hospital after a second surgery, and has been transferred to a rehab center. So this is a short blog post this morning.

But I wanted to share with you on how we prepare for Christmas around here... Of course with comic books as part of the preparations!

Merry Christmas & Happy Holidays to You!
