Neal Hefti Passes.... Writer of The Batman Theme & More...
Mood:  sad
Topic: TV Shows

Neal Hefti Passes....

Earlier this morning Tina and I were watching the cable news.

The passing of Neal Hefti was mentioned, and of course the 'Batman Theme' from the 1960's TV Show was played in the background.

Neal was hired to write that theme. He really struggled to finish the tune.

"Hardest piece I ever wrote," he later commented. "I agonized over it for six weeks." "I couldn't get inspired (to do the song)," he says.

"I'd watched two hours of film footage and thought, 'This is the campiest thing I've ever seen.' But then I felt what I was writing was not as good as the show. I never had a moment of 'Eureka!'".

Neal doesn't get as much credit today because Nelson Riddle and others actually scored the individual television episodes. So Neal's name kind of flashes by in the credits of the show...

Neal was born October 29th, 1922 in Hastings, Nebraska.

He started playing in bands back in 1940. He was in and out of Charlie Barnet's, Muggsy Spanier's, Earl Hines', Bobby Byrne's, and Charlie Spivak's bands learning and playing his craft.

In 1953 he quit touring with his own band and started studio work. He worked with Count Basie, Frank Sinatra, and then in the 1960's started writing for film and television work.

Besides being well known for the 'Batman Theme', his theme for 'The Odd Couple' Film was used for the TV series!

Neal's music will live on... our condolences for his family and friends.

Thanks for reading this blog post today, honoring Neal Hefti, and please join us again.

Neal Hefti had many hits during his career but the above album is the one that is most popular with collectors!

Neal Hefti will always be remembered for the above theme song... I was a teen-ager at the time, and it really set the 'tone' for each show's beginning!

Go Back To The 70's And See If There Is Life On Mars

Go Back To The 70's And See If There Is...

'Life On Mars'!

If you love the music of the seventies, you'll want to check out the new cop/sci-fi drama Life on Mars (ABC, Thurs. 10 pm).

Yes, that's "Life on Mars" as in the David Bowie hit tune.  Feeling like he's landed on another planet, present-day NYPD detective Sam Tyler is transported to 1973 when he's hit by a car while searching for his partner/girlfriend.

Is he time-traveling or is it all just a figment of his imagination?  It's hard to believe that anyone would conjure up Harvey Keitel in their fantasies!

Well, forget the plot, the fun of the show is the look - the clothes, the cars, the hairstyles, and of course, the music.

The music can also be the agony of the show.  If the music in the premiere episode is any indication, the songs are selected by virtue of how well their lyrics fit with the scene. This explains why viewers were tortured by "Little Willy" by The Sweet, while Tyler chases suspect "Willy."  It was a crappy song then, it's still crappy now.

The writers have fun with the fish out of water elements of Tyler's predicament. Most enjoyably when Tyler says he needs his "cell" everyone thinks he wants to sell something!  The gang in the squad room convulse when he wants his computer.

On a more serious note, the show addresses various social issues such as the changing role of women in the workplace and the burgeoning feminist movement with Gretchen Moll's character, a young policewoman whose job duties consist of getting coffee, first aid, handling kids, not asking any questions or venturing any opinions. (Michael's enjoying seeing Gretchen on the show, since he loved her in "The Notorious Bettie Page" Film.)

So, if you loved the seventies - the crazy clothes, all the hair, the music, you're going to love 'Life on Mars'.

If you want to check out some relics of the era, check out these Dazzler comic books below - yes, she's a Disco Queen super hero fighting evil with her disco skates on. WOW!  What kind of psychedelics were those writers on?!

So What Are You Listening To On Halloween Night?

It's that time of year again!

But this time Tina and I are 'Trunk or Treating' the Sunday before Halloween Night.

What's 'Trunk or Treat' you ask? Well, it's where cars, trucks and other vehichles line up on a parking lot or makeshift lot with their trunks open. Then the kids walk by each trunk and the owner(s) pass out candy!

This is a new idea that our church is sponsoring this year. We'll have to take photos and blog about it, as Tina's red sports car will be decorated ala Spider-Man webs and goodies!

Of course we'll have on Michael's favorite Halloween CD: Elvira Presents 'Haunted Hits' which features:

  Track Listing

1. Monster Mash - Bobby 'Boris' Pickett & The Crypt-Kickers
2. Haunted House - Jumpin' Gene Simmons
3. Ghostbusters - Ray Parker Jr.
4. Out Of Limits - The Marketts
5. The Blob - The Five Blobs
6. The Creature From The Black Lagoon - Dave Edmunds
7. The Purple People Eater - Sheb Wooley
8. The Addams Family (Main Title) - Vic Mizzy
9. Attack Of The Killer Tomatoes - Lee Lewis (cassette only)
10. Welcome To My Nightmare - Alice Cooper
11. Twilight Zone - Neil Norman & His Cosmic Orchestra
12. Dead Man's Party - Oingo Boingo
13. Little Demon - Screamin' Jay Hawkins (cassette only)
14. Attack Of The 50-Foot Woman - The Tubes (cassette only)
15. King Kong - Big T. Tyler (cassette only)
16. The Creature (From Outer Space) - The Jayhawks (cassette only)

Thanks To Our 250,000 Visitors!

We appreciate each and every one of you that have visited our Blog since we started counting visitors back on July 15th, 2006!

That number is based on 250,000 actual visitors. That is not counting the over 752,000 page views to date that eBay has counted since eBay added on a 'page counter' only, back in mid-2007.

That was a year after we had added a visitor counter, since eBay had not provided one with their blog format back in June 2006 when we started. We were curious where our blog visitors were finding us at, and what blog posts were popular, so we added stats!

Tina and I are very pleased with the readership to our daily blog posts seen in two versions, the eBay and our own domain name version.  Those  posts  have ranged from blogging on comics to TV Shows to movies to other pop culture topics!

For those of you that are new to our blog today, we have an ongoing 'Comic Con and Pop Culture Show' ourselves here at "Make It So Marketing Inc.", what with our daily blog posts and new listings of items for sale in our online store!

Thanks for reading this blog post today, and please join us again for more as look forward to our next Quarter of a Million Visitors!

Batman and The Joker Rule This Halloween Season!

Batman And The Joker Rule This Halloween Season!

It's that time of year when children, (and a lot of adults!), dress up in silly or scary outfits and beg for candy!

Yes, it's time for Halloween which explains the stack of catalogs and store circulars in our mail box this week featuring ghoulish costumes, decorations, and candy.

So, what characters look like they'll be the most popular this year - okay besides, Sarah Palin/Tina Fey?

Batman and the Joker, of course!

With the Joker, we're definitely talking Heath Ledger version, forget Cesar Romero!  I hope we don't have any little Jokers trick or treating at our house - that makeup on a seven-year-old -- too creepy!

Warner Brothers is even sponsoring a "Help Batman Keep the Joker in Jail" contest.  The winner gets a VIP tour of Warner Brothers studios.

Who are you going as this Halloween?

Batman?

The Joker?

Superman?

Invisible Woman? (How easy you stay home - no one sees you!)

Daredevil?

Elvira?

Elvira... Queen Of Halloween!

(Michael's favorite to see at parties!)

The Thing?

Let us know.  And happy trick or treating!

If you're looking for Batman comics...  We've got some terrific ones.

Plus, we have a ton of ghoulish HoRRoR comics that are right in season!

For those of you that are new to our blog today, we have an ongoing 'Comic Con and Pop Culture Show' ourselves here at "Make It So Marketing Inc.", what with our daily blog posts and new listings of items for sale in our online store!

Thanks for reading this blog post today, and please join us again for more!
