One-Hundred And Twenty Seven Years Ago....

Yesterday, October 26th, 2008, marked the 127th Anniversary of the 'Gunfight At the O.K. Corral' in Tombstone Arizona back in 1881!

Tina and I were so busy with Church, 'Trunk or Treat', and the Phillies Game later on TV, that I missed blogging about this fact yesterday!

Long time readers of our Blog will know that I am a TV Westerns fan, and of course bought every Comic Book that had a TV Western Show Photo Cover during the 1950's thru the mid 1970's during that Comics Genre's Heydays. (See below pic for just one of them!)

Click Here To See Our Current WESTERN Comics & Magazines listed for sale!

Wyatt Earp, his two brothers, and 'Doc' Holliday confronted Ike Clanton's gang 127 years ago. Three members of Clanton's group were killed, Earp's brothers and Holliday were wounded.

Tina and I of course had to stop in Tombstone when were in Tucson for a convention a few years ago. We were able to see a live 're-enactment' of the famous gunfight there as well as see the Birdcage Theatre.

A year ago, Tina, my great-uncle Howard and I visited the Autry National Center in Los Angeles, which has a special room that features the same gunfight, with audio and lighting effects. (See top right column for photo.)

Of course, Tina and I couldn't help ourselves, and got tooo much into spirit of the 'Wild West' there and found ourselves in the Autry Museum's Jail... (see below!).

Anyways, I just couldn't let the 127th  Anniversary of this famous gunfight go by without a mention.

Heck, I still remember when Star Trek: TOS - had an episode where they were part of the famous "Gunfight"!

Wyatt Earp, his brothers, and Doc Holiday are shown above in the replay of the 'Gunfight At the OK Corral', as portrayed at the Autry Western Museum in Los Angeles. The scene is in a special room and overhead lights go on and off as each figure takes turns "talking".

You can learn more about the hours and the admission prices at the web site autrynationalcenter.org

Spider-Man Makes an Appearance at Halloween Trunk or Treat!

Michael and I had a ton of fun today dressing up my red sportscar for Spider-Man's appearance at our church's Halloween "Trunk or Treat." (See top right photo.)

If you're not familiar with the concept, the adults park their cars in a row, trunks out so the kids can go from trunk to trunk trick or treating.  Like many of the parents we decorated our car.  But, as comic book fans, we stood out with our Amazing Spider-Man theme.

While everyone else had spooky Halloween themes, we decorated our trunk with a big Spider-Man beach towel, a spider web, and a bunch of Spider-Man cards and decals.  We had Spider-Man masks and T-shirts too!

Why Spidey?  He's the favorite comic book superhero of Michael's son, Vinnie, (see below pic).  Vinnie looked awesome in his Spider-Man mask and T-shirt, and had a ton of fun collecting candy with the rest of the kids.

Michael and I had a ball handing out candy, some of which was Marvel super-hero sweet tarts depicting Iron Man, Incredible Hulk, The Thing and Spider-Man.  I enjoyed showing the kids the Spider-Man stickers so they could chose their own.  Most popular for boys and teenagers: the sticker showing Spidey in his black costume, of course.

We also put a few Amazing Spider-Man comics on display.  Next year, I want to bring the laptop and show one of the Spider-Man movies or play the Spider-Man theme song!  Until then, we've got Spidey's web stretch across our front door and a bunch of Spider-Man faces holding it in place. Here's hoping some little super-heroes come by for Halloween!

Happy trick or treating,

~Tina

Police Action!

Tina and I are watching the new TV Show, 'Life On Mars', Thursday nights on ABC.

It is sooo good because of the cast, the sci-fi element, and of course a cop show that's set in 1973!

Matter of fact watching this show made me pull out some Atlas - Seaboard Comics from 1974-1975 to re-read!

Police Action and Targitt are a couple of series from Atlas Seaboard, that really have this time era down pat. Each series has a strong male lead character.

Just like 'Life On Mars' lead star, Jason O'Mara (pictured below), who was like a fish out of water when he leaves the year 2008 by being hit by a car, and finds himself as a newly assigned detective in a NYC precinct. However by the 3rd episode he is a much stronger person in the way he conducts himself 35 years in what is his 'past'.

Click Here To See Tina's Review on 'Life On Mars'!

Tina and I are looking forward to upcoming episodes of this series, which is derived from the UK TV Series of the same name.

For those of you that haven't read the Atlas Seaboard series, we have a few copies left in our eBay Featured Store.  They are a real 'trip' back to the 1970's for sure!

Police Action features Sam Lomax NYPD with artwork by Mike Sekowsky, and Luke Malone - Manhunter, story and art by Mike Ploog.

Targitt is pretty good at first, being an FBI agent, with art by Howard Nostrand, but with issue #2 he turns into a 'Bullseye' type of character with a costume. (Bullseye is a Marvel Comics' Daredevil villain).

Some stories hold their own even decades into the future, and others are definitely 'time period pieces'.

Tina and I are starting to enjoy 'Life on Mars' already, and it may replace the shows 'New Amsterdam' and 'Journeyman' for us that were not renewed for this season....

With Third Party Graded Comics!

We've been buying and selling comic books since Michael started selling at San Diego Comic Con in 1972.  (See sidebar story in right column.)

Over the years, we've seen a number of innovations in the comic book industry, but few have made as big an impact as third party grading.

The leader in third party comic book grading is CGC (Comics Guarantee Company), the company we use. CGC takes the raw comic book, grades it according to their guidelines, encapsulates and seals the comic with a label showing the title, grade, writer, artist and any special notes.

A comic that has been CGC-graded can fetch twice the value of the same comic's Overstreet Guide price. Now that's impact!

Why would comic book buyers pay twice as much (and sometimes more) for CGC graded books?  Simple - confidence in the grading.  As a collector you want what you're buying to hold it's value (unlike today's stock market!)  With third party graded comics, collectors feel confident that the comic is as described.

While we pride ourselves on our conservative grading, we also carry CGC graded comics for our customers.  We invite you to take a look at several CGC-graded comics we have listed which feature
a "Submit Your Best Offer" option.  Just click on the eBay widget above.  Make us an offer we can't refuse!

CGC graded comics make a treasured gift for the holidays for those special collector friends and loved ones.

If you're new to our blog, we have an ongoing 'Comic Con and Pop Culture Show' here with daily blog posts and new listings of items for sale in our online store!

Wonder Woman Joins the Cover Girls of the DC Universe!

It's about time that Wonder Woman joins the Cover Girls of the DC Universe!

The Adam Hughes Limited Edition Statue shown to the above right is sculpted by Jack Mathews.

This is a limited-edition, hand-painted, cold-cast porcelain statue and is based on the stylish cover of WONDER WOMAN #150 by artist Adam Hughes!

Of course the staute is packaged in a 4-color box and also includes a 4-color Certificate of Authenticity.

This statue is due to ship by Late June of 2009 with a MSRP $99.99!

This Wonder Woman statue would add to the others in the Cover Girls of the DC Universe statues of: Catwoman, Zatanna, and Supergirl!

Of course Tina will think I will want one, as she thinks Wonder Woman is my favorite Superheroine! She even took my photo with 'Wonder Woman' at the SDCC 2008 below!
