Joe Ruby And Ken Spears At The Comic Con!
Mood:  caffeinated
Topic: TV Shows

Joe Ruby

And

Ken Spears At The Comic Con!

As Reported From The Floor Of The 2008 SDCC Comic Con  International!

They were best known as Ruby-Spears Productions to their fans!

Individually they were Joe Ruby and Ken Spears.

I was lucky enough to see them both twice at programs during the 2008 Comic Con International in San Diego.

Both times the host of the program was Mark Evanier, who knows what the fans would like to hear from his guests, as he is still a fan himself of those that are invited to the programs he hosts!

Joe and Ken appeared at the special program on Friday from 2:00 to 3:00 titled 'That '70s Animation Panel, and then again on Sunday morning for the Annual Jack Kirby Tribute Program, because Jack came to work for them after leaving Marvel Comics in the mid 1970's!

This is just a first blog post of a few planned for these two Con guests and I'll start with listing just a few programs for TV that they did:

Thundarr the Barbarian, Scooby Doo, Dynomutt, Fangface, Jabberjaw and many more!

Below is an archived blog post about Electra Woman and Dyna Girl that has been seeing renewed activity from bloggers this past week, ending up in our Top 10 List:

Sci-Fi Comics Can be seen by clicking here!!

Electra Woman and Dyna Girl!

This live action TV show was created by Joe Ruby and Ken Spears.

The show was originally shown as part of the Krofft Supershow that aired for two seasons, 1976 - 1978!
The 8 stories were shown via 16 episodes, with the first one shown in 1976!
Deidre Hall who played in the soap 'Days of Our Lives' was Electra Woman, and Dyna Girl was played by Judy Strangis.
The two of them in their alter-egos of Lori and Judy, were reporters for 'Newsmaker' Magazine.
Believe it or not, in the year 2000, there was a pilot made for a possible series on the WB!
Markie Post was the New Electra Woman for that pilot!
Thanks for reading this post today and please join us again for more photos and stories from the Comic Con, including more on Joe Ruby and Ken Spears!

Engineer Bill Stulla Passes....
Mood:  sad
Topic: TV Shows

'Engineer Bill' Stulla Passes....

Bill Stulla who portrayed the beloved 'Engineer Bill' from 1954 to 1966 in the Los Angeles viewing area died Tuesday at the age of 97.

In his honor we are republishing our most popular viewed archived blog post today which is from November 23rd  2007.

We welcome your comments and memories of 'Engineer Bill' following the repost from last year's Thanksgiving Weekend 2007:

Whom Am I Thankful For?

Part II

Yesterday was the time of year that many Americans stopped, reflected and gave thanks...

I was no exception to this as Tina and I got ready to go to my folks for Thanksgiving Dinner.

I am thankful for many things during my life, which is why this is but Part II, but one of the earliest things I can remember from my childhood was when my dad was stationed in Long Beach.

It was then that Engineer Bill (Stulla) hosted a kid's TV show on KHJ Channel 9 in Los Angeles.

He was a favorite TV show host during the 1950's and 1960's.

His show was broadcast on every week day about when school had been out for a while.

What really stuck out in my memory was his 'Red Light - Green Light' portion of the show, where my brother and I would drink, stop, drink, and so on when he would say 'green light' for us kids to drink the milk out of the glass, and 'red light' to stop drinking!

Some of the things that stick in your mind don't always make sense years later, but it was here that I found that drinking and eating what's good for you was fun!

By the way, other local televised kid's shows of Los Angeles during that time were Sheriff John, Chucko the Clown, and Bozo the Clown.

I don't remember many 'National' shows that I watched during that time but one for sure was Captain Kangaroo seen in black and white format.

The above is a picture of 'Engineer Bill' taken during the 1960's while holding his "RED LIGHT-GREEN LIGHT" Glass used during the portion of the show that my brother and I used to follow and imitate while watching his show!

He was a Great influence on us and will be missed! Our condolences to his daughter and family.

Excessive Shipping Warning!
Mood:  quizzical
Topic: eBay Info

Warning! Warning!

Warning Will Robinson!

Sheesh!  That's What I 'Hear' In My Mind Whenever I See The Following Notice From eBay After Listing An Item Every So Often This Week!

 Attention Seller!

We noticed your shipping cost looks high compared to other listings in your category with similar shipping services. .

We've found that buyers are sensitive to shipping costs. Items with high shipping costs may be less likely to sell and may get less visibility in search results. Listings that violate the eBay Excessive Shipping Charges  policy may be removed from the site.

Please review your shipping costs and make changes if necessary. For help, click the Research rates link in the shipping section.

Well.... I went through the excercise of following the links provided in the above 'warning', and found that because of the weight of the packages we ship, that we really aren't, IMHO, 'over charging' to ship a protected comic book to most areas in the USA... which I already knew!  Indeed, when a buyer adds on additional purchases, then we actually 'lose' money because of the additional weight we have to ship by priority mail, and with a Delivery Confirmation Receipt, we are charged $5.45 by the USPS and we only charge $4.99 for our qualified 'shipping special'!

For those of you that don't know, we went to a 'Flat Rate Shipping Charge' back in May 2007, when the USPS and eBay changed the cost of shipping and the shipping fields respectively.

We don't use 'media mail' rates, because both our local Postmaster and Washington DC have notified us that comics are not to be shipped 'media mail'.

So, yes, if a customer buys just one comic book from us, our 'Unlimited Shipping Flat Rate' shipping charge of $4.99 to USA addresses for raw unslabbed comic books only, may seem a little high to those that don't ship comic books via USPS.

However, the shipping charge also includes a delivery confirmation receipt to protect the buyer and seller for the delivery of the item(s).   The shipping charge also includes at least one cardboard insert, a protective folder, the comic is bagged and boarded, and the folder is taped and enclosed securely into the bubble wrap envelope, along with the invoice.

So, where does eBay get its' idea that we may be charging excessive shipping?

Well, it's probably due to the fact that several sellers do NOT include cardboard inserts in their envelopes.  They also don't use backing boards and bags made for comics. Plus, they probably don't use bubble wrap envelopes to additionally protect the valuable comics content inside!

I have purchased several lots in the past off of eBay, and shook my head at the way those purchases arrived to our address!

Of course I also came across a seller who was selling his own personal collection and took the utmost care in packing my purchases. They were as Near Mint when they arrived as they were in the photos. He was rewarded by our additional purchases!

(continued to top of second column...)

(continued from bottom of first column)

....Back to eBay's possibly reasoning to automatically insert a 'warning'....

Additionally, the #1 seller in our sales niche, (#1 by the amount of listings that are listed in their eBay Store), only charges $2.95 for shipping via USPS Priority Mail.

Even casual eBay sellers will know that $2.95 is below the actual cost of mailing the item(s) to a buyer!  To see the 'true' USPS cost take a look at the USPS web site.

So are other sellers in that sales niche supposed to lose money on shipping? Just because one seller elects to do so?  IMHO if that seller wishes to lose money on shipping that is their choice. They should make it up on volume.

But does that mean that eBay is comparing us (and other sellers) in that niche with that seller's below cost shipping charges?

Possibly as eBay is now including the 'warning' at the left on several of our items as we list them...

Speaking of shipping costs... eBay is promoting 'Free Shipping' listings with 'Free Shipping' Icons to go with the listings!

Once again that is up to the individual seller if they wish to use that promotion... and we have used that on occasion in the past.  But I sure wouldn't want to have our shipping charge compared to a seller that is usuing 'Free Shipping' as a promotional gimmick....

Anyway, I just want to 'vent' this via blogging today....

With all of the changes this year that have occured, and with more 'coming',  we need more than just one 'scorecard' to keep track of all of the changes!

We enjoy selling here on eBay, and intend on continuing to do so. Ebay Live 2005 Convention in San Jose was a Grrreat Venue to become motivated into expanding further on eBay!

BTW, We also have an ongoing convention here, it's a Comic Con  and Pop Culture convention at Make It So Marketing, what with our daily blog posts and listings of items for sale!

Thanks for reading this post today and please join us again when we blog more fun topics like photos and stories from the recent 2008 Comic Con!

Star Wars At The Comic Con?

Star Wars

At The Comic Con?

As Reported From The Floor Of The 2008 SDCC Comic Con  International!

There were several Star Wars themed costumed characters roaming the exhibit hall of the recent San Diego Comic Con of course!

Besides the usual Slave Girl Leias, there were Storm Troopers marching up and down the premises during the times that we were there either individually or together!

And no, I wasn't able to attend the late announced 25th Anniversary of 'The Return of The Jedi' Film with the Slave Girl Leia Group Foto with Jabba the Hut as blogged about here previously!

Lucas Film had a giant sized booth again, and we stopped long enough to have my photo taken with one of the Stormtroopers nearby. See top right photo.

And of course, who could miss the life-sized Jabba The Hut that towered over the rest of the over sized booth?! See middle right photo.

Unfortunately we did not get to attend the Star Wars Fan Film Awards this year, as that special program running on Thursday July 24th from 8:30 to 10:00 conflicted with two other programs I wanted to see. (Will Eisner: Portrait Of A Sequential Artist, and 'Superhero Kung Fu Extravanganza'!

There is sooo much to see at the Comic Con that no one could see it All!!!

BTW, We also have an ongoing Comic Con  and Pop Culture convention here at Make It So Marketing, what with our daily blog posts and listings of items for sale such as Star Wars Comics!

We Didn't Get To See The X-Files Film While At...

We Didn't Get To See The X-Files Film While At...

The 2008 Comic Con...

But We Did Get To See Dean Haglund!

The X-Files Film opened during Comic Con Week in San Diego, California.

Thus we didn't make the time to go see it, as we were at the Comic Con by 5:45 a.m. at the latest each day just to obtain an underground parking space!

And trust me.... once you get underground parking, you don't want to leave until it's closing time for the Con!

So we were walking through the Sails Pavilion of the San Diego Convention Center, enroute to another Con Program, when I noticed it was one of the three 'Lone Gunman' trio from the X-Files TV Series we were walking by!

So, since I was keeping my camera around my neck for easier access, I quickly snapped a few shots, of which I am sharing a couple at this time!

I had been to a 'Lone Gunman' special program at the LA Sci-Fi and Comics Con years ago, but Dean was the only one that hadn't shown up there for that program!

So now I've seen all three of the trio in person!

Also, for those of you that are wondering... Yes there is a charge for almost all autographs and photos taken with the stars at these booths. The stars do come down to the Con and several run the convention circuit so that you can obtain an autograph, chat briefly with them etc. etc...

Check out the signed memorablilia on eBay in case you think their charging for autographs is unreasonable!

BTW, We also have an ongoing Comic Con  and Pop Culture convention here at Make It So Marketing, what with our daily blog posts and listings of items for sale!

Thanks for reading this post today and please join us again for more photos and stories from the Comic Con!
