There's a Bigger Pattern to "Fringe"
A mega-hyped tv show created by JJ Abrams opens with a shot of an airplane in a storm -- hmmm -- there's severe turbulence -- hmmm -- passengers are getting nervous -- hmmm.
Sound like Abrams' LOST? Well, not exactly. Actually it "sounds" like X-Files - especially the opening theme music. "Fringe" referes to "fringe science" the study of the paranormal -- X-Files again. Did I mention the two main characters you meet in the opening are a male-female FBI team? In fairness, unlike X-Files, Fringe introduces the concept of a wider conspiracy (via Blair Brown's character) early on in the pilot episode. The Executive Director (Brown) of Massive Dynamics (think Microsoft meets Halliburton and plays around in genetic research) warns Olivia (the female half of the FBI team) to be very careful. You can almost hear the X-Files spine-tingling theme playing in the background. Despite some silly plot holes, Fringe does through us some awesome curves - courtesy of Mark Valley's FBI agent character. It's nice to see the typical "all American" play a heavy for once. I got a kick out of the crazy location "signage" -- it puts the use of these elements in shows like "24" and "Law and Order" to shame. My verdict is "Fringe" is on my must-watch list for this tv season. Like LOST, I love a show that surprises me. They threw me some great curves in the pilot so I'm signing on for more. Michael, I'm not so sure about - he'll tell you later. He doesn't react as well to "surprise twists" as I do- he tends to call them the result of "poor writing"!!! I reserve that comment for Bobby in Dallas coming out of the shower saying it was all a dream! If you missed Fringe you can catch the premiere episode again on Sunday. And, if you want to check out some X-Files and other "fringe-like" comic books, click here. - Tina | The Premiere Episode, (September 9th), of the Fringe TV Series was shown twice at the San Diego Comic Con International in July. However due to programming conflicts neither Michael or Tina were able to preview it. Thus last night's premiere show was also new to them.... The Premiere Episode of the Fringe TV Series included scenes with Anna Torv, Christopher Britton, Joshua Jackson, Charlotte Rampling, Kirk Acevedo, Lance Reddick, Mark Valley, John Noble, Blair Brown, and Jasika Nicole.
