Ducks, Ducks, And More Ducks....

Carl Barks

"The Duck Man"!

Carl Barks (1901 - 2000), is widely respected as 'The Duck Man'!

Why? It was he that invented Duckburg, with Scrooge McDuck (1947), Gladstone Gander (1948), The Beagle Boys (1951), Gyro Gearloose (1952), Flintheart Glomgold (1956) and several more!

Carl first went to work for Walt Disney Studios as an 'inbetweener' in 1935.

(Donald Duck started in 1934.)

Carl quit in 1942, but contributed half the artwork to a oneshot Donald Duck comic book printed by Western Publishing that owned Dell Comics.

Shortly after that Carl started submitting both art and scripts to Dell and worked on the Duck Family for the next three decades!

Today, those Carl Barks issues are highly prized for collectibility, and the later issues that reprinted those issue are also valued for their great reading value.

Currently we have several of Carl Barks issues in stock as well as other Disney, Gladstone, Gold Key and Dell Comics with several 'watchers' on each listing.

So I am blogging this topic to bring more attention to those Bark issues before they are gone!

BTW, we have an ongoing Comic Con  and Pop Culture convention here at Make It So Marketing, what with our daily blog posts and listings of items for sale!

Thanks for reading this post today and please join us again!

H.E.R.B.I.E.

the Robot.... What Was He Doing In The Fantastic Four Comic Books?

We took a day off from comic book listing and blogging for the holiday yesterday.

Checking our blog stats this morning, and I see that there is a new interest in our 'HERBIE' archived blog post. Not for sure why that is today, but for those that don't know about HERBIE here is part of theat archived blog post:

H.E.R.B.I.E. was brought in during one of the cartoon periods of the FF on TV,  (1978), when the 'powers that be' producing the cartoon thought that kids shouldn't be emulating the Human Torch, who would 'flame on' when using his superpower! Plus they couldn't get the cartoon rights to the Torch, who had been optioned out separately...

In the comics, H.E.R.B.I.E. was created by Mister Fantastic and  Master Xar of an alien race.  They hoped that the robot would aid their search for Galactus.

As could only happen in comics, what neither of the creators realized, was that Dr Sun, an imprisoned enemy of Master Xar,  was able to escape  by jumping from an alien computer to H.E.R.B.I.E.'s robot body.

Thus, this robot was Dr Sun's sleeper agent, whom he could control whenever he wished.

The scene on the comic book cover to the top right shows Mister Fantastic and the Thing confronting H.E.R.B.I.E. who was under Doctor Sun's control.  After besting them and the other two members of the FF, Dr Sun then abandoned H.E.R.B.I.E.'s body and transferred his consciousness into the Baxter Building's main computer, which would allow him to control the entire building!

However, Mister Fantastic broke free and was able to lock Dr. Sun away from the rest of the computer system.

It was then H.E.R.B.I.E., now himself again, realized that Dr. Sun could always simply return to his robot body. Not wanting the villain to return again like so many other comic book villains,  the  robot heroically threw himself into the computer, destroying it, Dr. Sun, and himself!!!      What a story!!

If there is a major reason why H.E.R.B.I.E. is drawing several blog readers today, I'll update this blog post later...

BTW, We don't show TV Cartoon Show episodes here, although we do have an occasional  Cartoon Film or Cartoon TV Show DVD for sale here, but we do have an ongoing Comic Con  and Pop Culture convention here at Make It So Marketing, what with our daily blog posts and listings of items for sale!

H.E.R.B.I.E. stood for:

Humanoid Experimental Robot B-Type Integrated Electronics...... whew, what a mouthful !!!

HERBIE had the ability to connect to any computer system, electricity generators, etc.

He carried lasers, and various hidden tools and features as what was needed in the cartoons, almost like Felix the Cat and his bag of tricks. The photo above shows Herbie in the comic books.

Over 500 TV Show Episodes To Her Credit!

Barbara Luna!

Last week  I blogged about BarBara Luna being featured in one of my favorite episodes of Star Trek, 'Mirror Mirror'.

Also, that Tina had pointed out that BarBara was the same actress that was 'Elena' on the episode titled the same on a Mission Impossible episode.

So I 'Googled' her, and found that she was also in several other TV shows during the years as well as film. Those included Bonanza, Have Gun Will Travel, The Texans, The Untouchables, Tales of Wells Fargo, Death Valley Days, The Outer Limits, Ripcord, The Wild Wild West, The Invaders, The Man From U.N.C.L.E., Walt Disney's Zorro, Star Trek The New Voyages, Brenda Starr, two soap operas: Search For Tomorrow and One Life To Live, Plus more!

And that's just her TV Work! She was in many theatrical films also!

I wasn't aware that she has also been on the Star Trek convention circuit, as well as appearing at other comic conventions.

She has been at Dragon Con 2007, Wonder Con 2007, SDCC San Diego Comic Con 2006 among other recent appearances.

The photo at the above right is from her appearance earlier last year at Dragon Con 2007.

BTW, We don't show TV Show episodes here, although we do have an occasional  Film or TV Show DVD for sale here, but we do have an ongoing Comic Con  and Pop Culture convention here at Make It So Marketing, what with our daily blog posts and listings of items for sale!

The Leo Carrillo Ranch Part 4 (Cisco Kid and Pancho)

The Leo Carrillo Ranch

Part 4

The  2008 Friday Night Film Festival Continued!

Last night Tina and I once again went to the Leo Carrillo Ranch in Carlsbad, California to take in one of the special Friday Night Film Festival shows starring Leo Carrillo! The Film Festival ends September 12th, 2008.

For those that don't know who Leo Carrillo was, please see our previous blog posts by clicking Part 1, Part 2, and Part 3.

Last night's festivities started with wine and a picnic dinner, (bring your own or buy a Carrillo Combo consisting of hot dog, chips and soda), then a showing of a Cisco Kid TV Show episode from the early 1950's, and then the Main Feature!

The Cicso Kid episode last night was a more serious one, with two female ranchers who also had a lunch room in town. A couple of 'con men' rode into town, and came up with the idea of a staging a rodeo and making off with the prize money. Well, the Cisco Kid had other ideas on how to distribute the prize money! It was a pretty good episode and of course shown in color as all of the Cisco Kid TV Shows were filmed in during the b&w days of early TV!

The 'Main Feature' for this Friday Night  was the 1941 Film 'HoRRoR Island' where Leo was acting with Dick Foran, Peggy Moran, and Fuzzy Knight.

Others in the cast were: Foy Van Dolsen, Iris Adrian, Emmett Vogan, John Eldredge and Hobart Cavanaugh.

The title of the film was a misnomer, as it wasn't a 'HoRRoR Film', but instead a play on the 'Ten Little Indians' where one after another the adventurers to the island were bumped off!

This was another short 'B' film, (60 minutes long), and this time Leo played a one-legged sailor with a treasure map to Morgan the Pirate's buried treasure...

Or at least half of the map, as 'The Phantom' took the other half of the map early in the movie and thus it was more of a semi-thriller with comedic scenes instead of a 'HoRRoR' film!

Dick Foran, the lead actor, was a good 'B' Film actor who also was in several TV Shows later including Laramie, Bonanza, Rawhide, Death Valley Days, and more.

Tina thought it was a good play on 'The Ten Little Indians' angle, and the film reminded her of her Aunt Anne's talking about going to see 'B' Films during the time period of this film with her Aunt.

I enjoyed seeing the film, with Leo playing a comedic swashbuckler. The outdoor showing was more heavily attended last night, with approximately half of the audience being 'newbies' to the Film Festival.

There are only two films left for the 2008 Summer Friday Night Film Festival.  I am looking forward to the 'A' Film running 127 minutes, The 'Lillian Russell' film from 1940, where Leo Carrillo also had a big role in it!

BTW, We don't show films here, although we do have an occasional DVD for sale here, but we do have an ongoing Comic Con  and Pop Culture convention here at Make It So Marketing, what with our daily blog posts and listings of items for sale!

The Carlsbad Recreation Department, that presents the Friday Night Film Festival, uses 'The Cabana' for selling movie concessions today. The 'reflecting pool' used to be a true swimming pool when Leo and his wife Deedie owned the ranch.

Click here to see our currently listed items for sale!

Above is a photo showing the actual pool with Leo and Deedie relaxing by it!  They entertained many Hollywood Stars of their time by the pool.  The ranch was so large, and at the time so far away from Hollywood in the back country of Carlsbad, that the film stars would come down with their 'Airstreams' and camp in an area near the Cabana for several days at a time!

Click here to see some of the great westen comic book covers we have owned!

I have been asked whether or not this was a true working ranch. The answer is yes, as Leo had at one time 600 head of cattle and several vaqueros that lived on the ranch!  Above is a photo of Leo at the Ranch.

Click here to see Our World at eBay!

The crowd last night placed their low back chairs on the grass by the pool, and then proceeded to wine and dine until the Cisco Kid episode and film came on. The current status of the Film Festival is to have the films shown outside, but there is a fund raiser going on to have the films shown in what was the old barn, (shown above), after it is restored. It won't be the same, as being out under the stars at night is part of the charm of the Film Festival, but then again, maybe there won't be so many darn mosquitoes!

Continual Interest In Isis The Cat!

Continual Interest

In Mister Seven's Cat 'Isis'

 As Pictured In Human Form!

That Was Victoria Vetri's

(a.k.a. Angela Dorian)

Role on The Star Trek: TOS TV Show!

Earlier this week I blogged about our renting the Star Trek TOS Season 2 DVD to view, after catching what we wanted to of the DNC Convention in Denver each night.

The 'Assignment: Earth' episode jumped out at me, because of an archived blog post of ours that has been in the Top 20 the past week.

Last year I had blogged about Angela Dorian / Victoria Vetri being on the 1960's Batman TV Show and referenced that she had also been on Star Trek The Original Series (TOS). That blog post has been in our Top 20 all week!

Even today, that archived blog post and the one we published earlier this week are in our Top 10 archived blog posts.

I don't have an answer as to why... but the fact is that for some reason those two blogs are very popular this week!

At the top right is a new close up pic of 'Isis' from the episode, and below that is the one that has been published in the earlier blog posts for comparison.

'Isis' only had a couple of minutes in 'human form' at the end of the episode, as she immediately turned back to the black cat form.

The episode 'Assignment: Earth' originally aired March 29, 1968.

It still holds up today as a good hour of entertainment even though the stage sets were a little skimpy...

For those of you interested in Star Trek comic books or other sci-fi comics, just click on the picture at the top right
