TODAY'S FEATURE:

I just read our subscription copy to the "All About ROI" Magazine, the March 2010 issue...

The acronym 'ROI' in this case stands for "Retail Online Integration'.

The Editor's Note on page 7 of this issue grabbed my attention right away, as both Tina and I use Facebook for Networking and we have a Fan Page, a branded (Facebook Comic Con) Group Page, a brand new invitation only Facebook Group Page, and a Facebook Blogging App (Networked Blogs) on our social networking.

I'm going to post the Editor's Note that Editor-In-Chief Melissa Campanelli wrote, and then take those to show how You as an independent comics creator / publisher can utilize this info to your benefit.

First, here's the excerpts, (and the text hi-lited in RED is my doing so for emphasis):

Editor's Note : Is Facebook a Friend to Retailers?

Yes, at least according to a report that arrived in my email inbox
last month.

The report, ForeSee Results 2010 Social Media Report, found that retailers that focus their energies and resources on Facebook — as opposed to the myriad of other social media sites — are making the best choice.

Why is Facebook the best place to focus your social media initiatives? It's where shoppers are when they're online, and where shoppers want to hear from you. In fact, more than half of everyone who shops online uses Facebook, according to the report. What's more, of those online shoppers who engage in social media, more than 80 percent use Facebook. (YouTube comes in second at 31 percent, followed by MySpace with 22 percent, Twitter with 16 percent and LinkedIn at 12 percent.)

An unofficial look at the Facebook pages of the Top 100 online retailers, however, shows a different side of the story. Only one quarter of these leading brands actually have Facebook pages, according to the report. And another 25 percent have fewer than 10,000 fans.

"Facebook and other social media [sites] are still unknown territories for a lot of retailers," says Kevin Ertell , vice president of retail strategy for ForeSee Results and author of the report. "Retailers are often given conflicting advice about what to do with it, and [therefore tend to] wait until they're exactly sure what their goals are before taking the plunge."

One piece of conflicting advice retailers hear, Ertell says, is that Facebook pages and other social media campaigns shouldn't be used for promotional purposes. But, according to this report, that's exactly want consumers want: 49 percent of people who follow companies through social media do so to learn about deals and promotions, and 45 percent want to view products. A mere 5 percent use social media primarily for customer service.

Retailers also have to start treating their best "fans" as they would treat their best customers, Ertell advises.

"People who become fans of retailers are usually their best and most engaged customers," he says. "Retailers should think about segmenting those customers and treating them as they would their traditional best customers."

Now that's a lot of info to digest! I am highly suggesting those comic book creators / independent publishers to look very closely at the above Editor's Note and look to where they should be centering their marketing efforts!

Ewwww... "marketing efforts"?  Yes, I know, you want to just either write / illustrate / publish your comic book or graphic novel.  But folks... it's the marketing where I see so many indy publishers fall down at.

I can name on my one hand indie publishers that I personally have met who have the social media marketing markets, (Facebook / MySpace / Twitter / YouTube) down to a science AND appear to be successfully inter-mingling them for a really good marketing effort.

Yes, it does take time, but aren't You setting up yourself as a publisher as well as a creator?  Then it's about time you used the non-distributor channels to market your product.

And I don't mean following the 'herd mentality'.  I get dozens of 'invites' each week to to be a 'Fan' of this or that Facebook Fan Page.  Quite a few of those invites lead to half started, incomplete and possibly just a 'vanity' page for the creator to say they have a 'Facebook Fan Page' and / or get their friends off their back by saying they "have" a Facebook Fan Page.

Please re-read the above Editor's Note.  There's Gold in them thar Facebook Fan Pages!  You just gotta know how to pan for it.

And talking about 'panning'... don't forget to tie Your Twitter account to Your Facebook Fan Page!  (Unless you use your Twitter account to tweet a lot of personal stuff!)

This is another of my blogs that really isn't strictly comic book / graphic novel oriented, but with so many persons out there striking out on their own with mini-comics / comic books / graphic novels, etc., I felt that this Editor's Note was too important and meaningful to NOT blog about it here.....

My thanks to Melissa Campanelli for writing such a great Editor's Note! You too can check out more of this great magazine online at:

TODAY'S FEATURE:

Last year I posted a few blogs about sketch cards that were being illustrated by several artists for the 'Comics For Cures' Auction...

I haven't posted any blogs about this upcoming event so far, and was reminded about the upcoming event after seeing the above photos of the sketch cards illustrated by Bobby Nash.

Of course seeing my favorite comic book character of all time, THE THING from the Fantastic Four, grabbed my attention, and then there was THE GREEN HORNET in addition!

Well... I immediately clicked the 'Like' icon on Bobby Nash's Facebook Wall Posting and then proceeded to ask him if I could use the photos above for my own blog publicizing the upcoming event and his sketch cards!

He said yes, and added a little more:

"I am participating in the 3rd annual Comics For A Cure sketch card charity auction on April 3rd.

Posted on my Facebook Comicon/Bobby Nash page are the cards I drew in the pencil, ink, and color stages.

My cards feature G-Man, The Thing, Thor, and The Green Hornet. I hope I did them all justice. You can find more information at http://www.comicsforcures.com/."

Well Bobby... I for one thought you did a great job!  And for such a worthy cause too!

I invite all of you reading this blog post to check out both Bobby's own Facebook Group Page | Bobby Nash, and of course the 'Comic For Cures' page.

My thanks to Bobby Nash for allowing me to post the sketch cards in the varying stages as he penciled, inked and colored them!

To The Bottom Left:  Just One of the Many Posters for Supa Pirate Booty Hunt!

TODAY'S FEATURE:

Allright... I've been getting quite a bit of emails and messages about when I'm going to be publishing more of the 'finds' that Tina and I found at the recent Long Beach Comic Con Expo!

Believe it or not, I haven't run out of features to run here about that one day con in my blog!

And this 'find'... Well, You've got to see it to believe it!

It's kind of cute and kind of risque... not over the top like the Feature from this past Saturday's blog, yet in a similar vein, but lighter in tone.

What is it you say?  Well, first... Make sure you take a look at the photo of the Pirate, the Turtle, and Me at the top right of this post...Yeah, I said Pirate, Turtle and Me!

That's because the two costumed characters above are from:

http://www.supapiratebootyhunt.com/

Huh?  Well... You gotta take a look at the portal page of their web site to figure it out!

Plus there are several of the cartoons already up for your viewing pleasure!

I met Daniel the Turtle, (a.k.a. Steven Sievers) at the LBCC Expo, along with Dahveed.  Tina kind of surprised them by thinking and saying out loud that the Pirate's Hat looked like a Survivor TV Show Hidden Immunity Idol!

Hey!  She meant it as a compliment, guys!  ;)

Here, this is what the cartoon show is all about in their own blurbs:

"Supa Pirate Booty Hunt is a new animated show created by Steve Sievers of Level 27 Clothing & Dahveed of Smorgasbordproductions.com.

It's sex, drugs and rock 'n roll all on the high seas! Supa Pirate Booty Hunt is a cartoon intended for a hip, young adult audience. It has no nudity but adult humor and implied sexual situations. It is a hip late night show with a style similar to Adult Swim shows such as Venture Brothers and Aqua Teen Hunger Force.

The show combines classic slapstick squash and stretch Looney Tunes style animation with great action adventure story arches and hilarious comedy. The show spoofs current events, celebrities and the media while being set in a world of ancient magic and futuristic technology."

Steven has placed a few of the cartoon videos on my Facebook Pages since the LBCC as a reminder for me to blog about it...

Okay, Okay, enuff already!  Here's the mention!  ;)

Anyways, this is a pretty good cartoon show and I think you should give it a look / listen.

They also have a Facebook Fan Page that YOU can be interactive with them at:   "Supa Pirate Booty Hunt".

Oh, and for those that of YOU that would like to attend the NEXT Long Beach Comic Con... check out their Facebook Fan Page by clicking here!

My thanks to Steven for reminding me about their works, and to Tina LoSasso who once again took a great photo at the LBCC!

AND...My thanks again to all of YOU reading this blog and our archived blog posts, now almost 3,100 in number!!

TODAY'S FEATURE:

This is a review on 'The H-Boyz' #1 from Graphic Artists Inc....

My thanks to Clay Henss, (a.k.a. Clay Hatrison), who sent this in for a possible mention / review in my blog...

So what's this H-Boyz all about?

First, I must place a 'Disclaimer / Warning' on this blog post of mine!  Similar to what Clay and Blake Hatrison posted on the cover of the comic book itself.

That would be:  "Adult Content" & "Viewers Discrection Advised".

Why?  Well right on the cover itself, at the bottom, is the promo: "Introducing the New Lords of the Underground... The H-Boyz!".

And that is exactly what this comic book reminds me of, comics from the late 1960's - early 1970's that I'm currently selling a collection of in our own online store! (Unabashed plug here, LOL!)

Let me say this, though.  When and IF You go to their web site, Clay (Demonchild) and Blake (B-Boy) want to be in Your face, daring you to read further!

They'll throw a lot of 'bad words' at you and other phrases to introduce you to their publication.  They want to be known as the "nefarious duo known as the H-Boyz".

Here's a comment from them about what they are doing with this comic: "The H-Boys represent a new era in underground comix, hateful music and the proliferation of the dont-give-a-___, DIY aesthetic. We are the new overlords of the underground, and we command you to kneel before your death rock gods".

Due to the 'standards' my blogging host server has, I shouldn't list the titles of the short illustrated stories in their comic book here in this post.

I did note that both of them contributed artwork for the comic that is supposed to "act as an autobiography of our heinous exploits".

Well, so far their efforts to secure a publisher "brave enough" to bring their work into print and mass produced form has been "fruitless", to use their own word for it.

Well, there's a reason for this guys!

This comic ain't for the masses!

That's why there is the 'self-publishing' route to go to.  And You are going to have to market / market / market it yourselves to get your work known!

In all seriousness, the art ain't half-bad.  Matter of fact it is pretty darn good.  The situations that they place themselves in is 'typical' for an underground comix.

Nothing really new there for those that have read underground comix for years... but it would definitely be new and loud for those that hadn't read underground comix before!

But this genre is NOT for everyone!  Heck, it is probably a really limited niche to begin with... And with the 'In Your Face' attitude in print, it just might turn off the readers you want to attract.  Then again... it might not...it could be a niche within a niche sales market.

As I have mentioned in another review I posted on another underground style comix, (that of Iota Arcane's Imaginary Slave),  this series also had a CD with music tracks.  Unfortunately the CD itself is 'Sold Out' per their web site 'store' tab.

So what's my final thoughts on this...?

If You are into underground comix, then you should give it a try. Please note that is NOT for underage readers, PERIOD. There is some commercial value to this comix, but you can't be upset at the language and situations mentioned in this comix.  You have definitely been warned!

This is NOT a 'mainstream' comic book, and is NOT meant for everyone... And this could, (probably?), mean YOU!

You too can  view a few 'censored' pages of it, and even order it at your own mind-rotting peril at:

http://malignantstrain.com/hcomix.html

My thanks to Clay for bringing this publication to my attention.

AND...My thanks again to all of YOU reading this blog and our archived blog posts!
