TODAY'S 'MAIN FEATURE':
This is a review on 'Haven', an upcoming Graphic Novel that is first being presented in a comic book format...
Leonardo 'Lenny' Ramirez sent me several items to help me better understand what he was doing with his 'Haven' project. Including a timeline, photos of himself, background history of the project, and the .pdfs of the first two issues of the presentation in comic book format. Plus the 107 page storyline! Thus I have basically everything I needed to review this project of his, even though it isn't totally completed at this time.
So, what's this project about? Here it is in his own words:
The Dante family line has been in the fires of an ancient war between humanity and the nine circles of hell for generations. As a self-proclaimed "Aristocracy" the circles have now set their sights on the one chosen to fight the raging war …Haven Irena Dante. But soon after the tragic death of her mother, Haven endures the vile theft of her innocence and disappears….
No one has seen or heard from her in two years.
Until now.
Okay... the above set up the background for me. I read the first issue, and then most of the second, as the copy I received is not the 'final' version with full dialogue that is to be used.
So what did I think of this?
Well, I appreciated the 'behind the scenes' look at this project, and could see where this story was headed. Maybe that's 'cheating' a little by having this whole project preview, but since the project is not completed yet, it was good to compare the actual pages ready for print versus the project's 'road map'!
From what I could see via Davy Fisher's art...It is a well laid out story, with art that fits the tone of the project.
I had to read the classic story of Dante's Inferno years ago, so seeing Lenny's thoughts of a 'Dante Family' in a 107 page outline was interesting to me. And seeing those thoughts transformed to pictures was kinda 'cool' to me also, (wink!).
The two issues that I read were not 'over the top', and the dialogue was well written. Whereas this topic would not be one that I would usually search out for my own reading pleasure at the LCBS, the storyline and storytelling via pictures is presented well. Thus this should be aimed toward a more 'mainstream' reading graphic novel audience.
Talking about the artwork, Davy's artwork is not understated nor over the top either in presentation. It had a nice consistency in presentation, considering the subject matter and certain characters that were illustrated in the two issues I read.
I'm going to keep my eyes on this project, so as to bring you more about it in the months to come. The Graphic Novel, which I understand to be more of a compilation of the issues presented in comic book format, is due out in August 2010!

Leonardo Ramirez
An American author, Leonardo has been scribbling words and thoughts onto paper for over 20 years in the genres of children's books, fantasy, and alternate reality with his first work being published (Haven) through Markosia Enterprises and available August 2010. Inspired by the horrendous assault on his wife years ago, Leonardo wrote the graphic novel in a humble effort to encourage others who have shared the inner struggle between love and hate, anger and resentment, and utter loss while drawing on the work of Dante Alighieri's masterpiece of redemption.
His greatest joy is spending time with his wife of 11 years and young daughter. Together, they are committed to the study of the martial arts at the American Karate Academy in Brentwood, Tennessee where Leonardo passes on what he has learned as he continues his training.

Okay.. You've been asking me, and I've been asking the Facebook Comic Con people when the next FBCC Costume Competition is happening.
Well, it kicks off April 1st and runs till May 30th.
Why not until then? Well, the theme this time is: "Iron Man Costume Competition", because of the Iron Man 2 Film being released soon!

Comic Con International To Stay In San Diego...?

TODAY'S 'MAIN FEATURE':

Lately it seems I can't pick up a Sunday paper or turn on a local TV news program without hearing about the Comic Con International possibly / probably leaving its' birthplace...San Diego.

Whereas old timers such as myself still call it the San Diego Comic Con, (SDCC), the name was changed years ago to the Comic Con International: San Diego.
Indeed, when listing items for sale on our online store that come from Comic Con, I use the accronyms: SDCC, SDCCI, CCI and the words Comic Con, because those are the most popular names for the Comic Con International: San Diego.
My history with the San Diego Comic Con as a dealer goes back to 1972 when I bought out a dealer on the next to last day at the El Cortez Hotel and proceeded to sell the remainder of what were his wares, and then set up my own table in 1973 when the SDCC was held at the Sheraton on Harbor Island. (See photo top left of this post for a photo of tht.)
So it kind of hurts to think that I may not be going to what I and many others still call the 'San Diego Comic Con' in 2013, when the contract with the San Diego Convention Center expires after 2012.
Yeah, I realize it's probably all politics and bargaining chips being thrown around in the newspapers, on TV, and on radio interviews, but I for one would definitely miss the Comic Con NOT being in my own "backyard".
Sure, Anaheim isn't that far away from myself in North San Diego County, and for that matter neither is Los Angeles where their other convention center is mentioned in this Sunday's North County Times is located.
I have suggested before that the third suggested location, Las vegas, wouldn't make sense for that city to host it. That's because the 'comic con crowd' is not the gamblers nor high-end restuarant diners that Las Vegas would prefer to have. Note: I notice that Las Vegas isn't mentioned in this referenced article, althought that location was highly touted to be a major contender for Comic Con International in earlier articles.
The following is an excerpt from the North Cunty Times article on the front page, below the fold, Sunday March 14th for those of you that are not local to San Diego, but are interested in what's happening. Additionally there is a link to the rest of the story that follows the excerpt.
"Even as two cities try to lure Comic-Con International away from San Diego, the mayor and local business and tourism leaders are pushing hard to keep the popular four-day pop culture convention in town.
Parking problems, a lack of vacant and affordable hotel rooms and a cramped convention center threaten to end San Diego's association with the overcrowded fan gathering that in 40 years has grown into an internationally recognized celebration of pop culture and Hollywood fanfare.
"We just don't have space to accommodate the amount of people who attend the show or want to exhibit at the show," said David Glanzer, director of marketing and public relations for Comic-Con International. "Capped attendance means capped income, but costs continue to rise."
This year's convention is scheduled for July 22-25. And although it's still more than four months away, the four-day passes and single-day passes for Friday and Saturday sold out as long ago as September. The only tickets left ---- single-day passes for Thursday and Sunday ---- are going fast.
Some 126,000 people attended the convention last year".

I have been asked my thoughts repeatedly since this news first started appearing. I have preferred not to write anything publicly until now.

The reason why I'm blogging about it this morning is shown at the top right photo of this blog post.

What that photo shows is that of March 12th, 2010, that of the four days scheduled for the 2010 Con, Friday and Saturday memberships are sold out, (and have been before the 2009 Year ended!), and now the Thursday single one day membership is 97% sold out!

Take a look at Sunday, which is considered the 'slow day' and even that is 77% sold as of the 12th of March! All this with a little over four (4) months left before Opening Day!

I for one don't like everything that the old San Diego Comic Con has 'morphed' into, but this is ridiculous!

With a fixed number of memberships set, there is only one way membership costs are going to go and that is UP!

I for one, being basically a comics purist, don't like all of the changes that the CCI has evolved into.

However, people like my wife Tina, who does not have an affinity for comic books, are going because of the Hollywood influence. And yeah, I do attend several of the Hollywood panels and programs with her!

Something's gotta be done, and I hope that all parties concerned do what they can to keep the Comic Con International in 'my own backyard' of San Diego! 'Nuff Said! For Now at Least!

TODAY'S FEATURETTE:
Peter Graves passed away on Sunday, March 14th of a heart attack outside of his home in Pacific Palisades, California.
Peter Graves was 83 years old. I would have blogged about this yesterday, but already had my Monday blog formatted, plus I wanted to think a little more about this.
You see, I first remember Peter Graves as the dad on 'Fury', the TV Show. Yeah, that was a TV Show that also had comic books printed based on the show! As I had an affinity for TV shows that also had comics, I had those comics also for quite a while in my collection...
However, looking those up, I find that Peter wasn't pictured on the front cover of the few of the comic books that were published. However, the above photo in this 'Featurette' is Peter Graves as the dad, Jim Newton, on the TV Show.
I actually best remember Peter Graves, whose career spanned about 60 years(!), for his portrayal of the IMF leader James Phelps on the iconic spy series 'Mission: Impossible'. That ran for seven seasons on CBS.
At one time I had all 5 issues of the Dell Comics comic book series that were published on this TV Series. I had a buddy in high school who was enthralled with the format of spy shows including 'The Man From U.N.C.L.E., and was introduced to this MI show by him. (Thanks David!).
Below is the one that best featured Peter Graves on the front cover. It is from the October 1968 issue:


I also have tuned in to several episodes of A&E's 'Biography, of which Peter was the host of. That was in the mid 1990's. Peter was also on the revival TV series of Mission Impossible.
Of course, when I said that Peter was a star on the small and big screens, he was in several movies. I don't have any comics to share with you of those films here today...
My condolences to his family on his passing. He has given a lot of us many hours of entertainment throughout the years. He will be missed.

TODAY'S 'MAIN FEATURE':

I receive quite a few 'invites' to attend comic cons, comic shows, and other pop culture conventions...

Although we are based out of SoCal, we try to attend the ones that we can, based on what is happening at the event and costs of attending. If not, I try to at least 'publicize' those that look interesting to me at my Facebook Group Page at: http://www.Hamersky.com.
Those events and or shows or cons that I believe are unusual and deserving of more publicity, I usually at least mention in the 'Featurette' section of this Blog, (which would be seen at the bottom right of this blog).
This Event 'invite' was sent to me, and seemed timely to post here because of Vinnie's article in the Featurette section of this blog today.
The 'Kids Read Comics' Event in Dearborn, Michigan is one that I would take Vinnie to, IF we lived near that area! Why?

First...Here's the dates, time, and location:

Second, here is what the promo blurb sent to me said in the invite:

Our Kids Read Comics Convention is a totally free event that unites kids, teens, parents, teachers and librarians with professional artists and writers from the comics and animation fields. Our goal is to introduce kids to worlds of imagination while unlocking their creative impulses, and to serve that goal, the convention features:
* hands-on workshops
* panels and presentations for kids, families, and educators
* a chance for kids to meet and chat with comics and animation professionals
* the opportunity for kids to have their own art portfolios reviewed
KRC also works throughout the year to promote comics and creativity for kids and teens. We’re building a recommended reading list; gathering resources for parents, teachers and librarians; and organizing artists and writers who can bring presentations and workshops to libraries around the state of Michigan and beyond.
Kids Read Comics was founded by youth and teen librarian Edith Burney of Chelsea, cartoonist and educator Jerzy Drozd of Ann Arbor, comic shop owner Dan Merritt of Dearborn, and comic book writer Dan Mishkin of East Lansing.
Our second annual convention will be held on June 12 & 13, 2010 at the Henry Ford Centennial Library in Dearborn, and we hope to see you there!

So yeah, this is something I would take Vinnie to AND enjoy myself! You see, when I was growing up, (which was after the comic book burnings of the early to mid 1950's), comic books, or what my Great Aunt and Uncle called 'funnybooks', were given to me to read to expand my reading habits.

I've already stated here before that I started with 'Chilly Willy' comics, the usual Disney comics, and other 'funny books'.Of course there were a few DCs and several TV Western comics included in that mix of reading.

It was until the early 1960's that I discovered comic 'collecting' when Stan Lee and the 'Bullpen' published comics that I considered not to trade with my friends.

Too many comic cons that Tina and I go to, don't have enough kids there for the 'business' or 'pleasure' of reading comics, IMO. That's because most of the 'comic cons' I've been to in recent years are media cons, where the comics people are relegated to smaller booths out of the main walkways. Which is why I tend to go to sections like 'Artists Alley' and 'Small Press' sections.

But, those sections are not always conducive to exposing 'kids' to. So when I see an event like the one posted above, I've got to hi-light it in my Blog.

Without the younger generation being exposed to comics books, for stories aimed at their level, and not 'R' or 'XXX' rated, this comic industry is going to be an even smaller niche in the future, self-publishing not withstanding.

'MONSTERS VS ALIENS' - The DVD version!
"Monsters Vs. Aliens is an animated film that starts the storyline as this: It was Susan's and Derek's wedding day, when she gets hits by a meteorite and turns glowing green, starts growing taller and gets white hair. Then the government captured her and put her in a place for monsters where she was held, because monsters weren't given freedom.
I loved the quality of graphics and animation, including the clarity, coloring, and detail they put in the monsters, characters, and buildings.
I also loved the suspense; the plot being so in-depth, and it being so exciting. I also liked the ending for their were many surprises as well as a happy ending.
All the monsters got accepted because they saved the world, but no one thanked them for saving them on the Golden Gate Bridge. Not only did they get accepted that made it a happy ending, but Derek got what was coming his way because of his selfishness and arrogance when he asked Susan for an interview at his new job as a newsman in Fresno, and she picked him up, flicked him into the air, and Bob a fellow monster, caught him in his gelatin body and went on and on about their relationship was through, though they were never together.
This movie is great for adults and children who want pure fun, entertainment, and delight."

TODAY'S 'MAIN FEATURE':
This is another "Spotlight On..." blog in a series of blogs I have posted during the last two years!
I recently became aware of Bryan Reesman's works after winning a prize by subscribing to his blog via Facebook. It was a DVD that Tina and I just viewed last weekend matter of fact! Thanks again Bryan!
So being curious, I checked further into Bryan's Facebook profile, finding that Bryan also does more than just posting blog posts on a regular basis. He actually is involved in numerous activities that I will list later on in this post.
The following text and the photos supplied for this post of mine came from his blog. I'll give you the main link to all his activities and blog at the end of this post.
The main reason I chose to pick the following blog post and the photos out of all of his activities should be apparent to those of you that have been reading my own Blog for a while! Bryan's blog post was about one of the artists that I enjoy seeing also in person, and one that just doesn't receive enough acclaim in my opinion!

"One of my favorite comic book artists growing up and the greatest artist ever to draw The Incredible Hulk, Herb Trimpe has always had a signature style that dazzled me. I recently interviewed Trimpe for ADD, but beyond that the one thing I really wanted was to have my likeness sketched by him.
I did not have time while I was attending New York Comic Con this past February because I was busy on assignment.
So when the Big Apple Comic Con rolled into town last weekend, I made sure I attended and got what I craved.
Trimpe admitted that he had not sketched someone on the spot in awhile, so I felt honored that he took a shot at it. Both he and I were pleased with the result! It’s the closest I’ll get to looking like a real superhero."

Recently promoted to New York editor for Stage Directions magazine, Bryan has also served as a Contributing Editor to Keyboard magazine.

He is a columnist for Metal Edge, Stage Directions, and Projection, Lights & Staging News, and he was a panelist at the 25th annual CMJ New Music Marathon in 2005.

Various assignments have taken him to England, Germany, Norway, Denmark, Tenerife, British Columbia, Belgium, Monaco, and the Czech Republic.

A voting member of the Recording Academy, Bryan has written liner notes for heavy metal legends Judas Priest, Black Sabbath, AC/DC, Dokken, Aldo Nova, and Yngwie Malmsteen, among others.

Bryan recently contributed over 1,200 questions to the Caddyshack and Killer Trivia board games from USAopoly.

For three years he was the U.S. correspondent for Malcolm Dome’s weekly “Nu World Order” radio broadcast on Total Rock.com. He has been interviewed by ICE Magazine (U.S.), El Pais (Spain), and Spotlight Magazine (Germany).
Bryan’s diverse tastes and in-depth knowledge of pop culture have made him a sought after entertainment journalist by dozens of media outlets over the last decade.
Whew! When I said a "little about Bryan Reesman", it actually turned out to be a 'Lot'! Bryan is a busy guy!!

I have previously blogged about finding this Museum after becoming Facebook Friends with the owner, Allen Stewart.
Well now, I've received an invite to the event being called: Hall Of Heroes Comicon!
So for those of you that are able to attend, (we can't...) here's the info that you would need to be able to attend:

Here's the greeting from the invite:
"Welcome to the 1st Hall of Heroes Comicon! We will have local and out of town dealers selling both comics and toys here at the museum.
Come and see what treasures you will find to complete your collection or start collecting.
We will also have a surprise guest on hand and a s Super-Hero will be wandering the museum, so don't forget your camera!
Great fun for all. Admission is only $5.00 for adults, $3.00 for children under 10.
Come and meet Casey Heying, artist and co-writer of The Oz/Wonderland comic book series and get some of his book autographed, and also appearing in person, the fastest man alive...The Flash!

TODAY'S 'MAIN FEATURE':
This is another "Spotlight On..." blog in a series of blogs I have posted during the last two years!
Well... Actually, you could actually call it more of a 'Mini-Sptlight' on Robert Roach today, because Tina and I met him briefly again at the recent LBCC Expo up in Long Beach California!
Briefly, because although Robert was there to help man The Antidote Booth with others from the 'TAT Collective', he had to leave early to teach a class elsewhere later that afternoon! Busy guy, that Robert!
I have blogged about Robert's two different mini series before, both the (non-autobiographical) "The Roach" and also "Menthu". See the links for those archived blog posts for actual reviews of each of the series, by clicking on the mini-series names.
Robert still has those issues available for sale at: http://www.hometownprods.com/commerce even though I've personally stated that "The Roach" was the Best Mini-Series I read in 2009! ;-)
I'm looking forward to see what is next in line for Robert's publishing line. I'll be sure to let you know when his next work is available here in this blog.
And Robert, it was Great to see You again, however brief a time it was!

TODAY'S FEATURETTE:
Kat Nicholson, a Facebook Friend, sent me an 'invite' to attend the 'Comic City' show being held within the upcoming 'Memorablia Show'.
Only thing is... it's "Across the Pond" in the UK! But I did want to bring it to the attention of those of YOU reading this Blog that are already in the UK or flying there for business or pleasure during that time period!
Here's just a part of what the promo flyer stated:
"The Spring Memorabilia Show is nearly upon us. Along with the Sporting Memorabilia and the comings and going of All sorted manner of Sci-Fi fans there is now Comic City! Come along see original artwork, get sketches or just have a chat with Artist from within the Comics Industry."
The show is happening March 27th & 28th of 2010. The following is more info that I received regarding Kat at the show:
"Kat Nicholson is a comic artist currently drawing "A Midsummer Night's dream" for Classical Comics, & also worked as a colourist on; Marvel Heroes, Action Man Atom, Transformers animated, Dream works tales & Scooby Doo.
Jason Cardy and Kat Nicholson will be joined by other artists drawing sketches to raise money for "Draw the World Together", a charitable art project that raises money for under privilaged children in some of the poorest regions of the world."
