TODAY'S 'MAIN FEATURE':

Recently I received a package of mini-comics in the mail from Matt Levin. This was after he saw my 'Featurette' blog post on Jim Main's own mini-comics from Main Enterprises...

I was pleased to receive these issues as I had not been aware of them being published, even though they have been in print for a decade now!

Here's a little bit of info that I received and / or found on WALKING MAN COMICS:

These series were created by Matt Levin, (words, music & pictures). He actually started publishing mini-comics in 1988!  Then he published a 12-page mini-comic monthly from February 1996 to March 2006, which is quite a long period of time in the self-publishing arena!

What Matt published were his original songs and short essays in two altnernating series, "Musicomics" with 60 total issues, and also "Walking Man Comics Presents Specials", which has run 71 issues.

Currently Matt is publishing the latter title on a bi-monthly basis. Matt's goals for "Walking Man" are:

"Imagination, brevity, elegance and wit", and the promotion of mini-comics as an affordable pocket-sized means of personal communications available to everyone, regardless of age, education, and 'professional ability', dedicated to the principle that one's level of drawing abioity should never discourage creators."

Again, although I've never seen these mini-comics, episodes of them have been also published in the monly Small Press Syndicate zine "Rap Sheet", the bi-annual rubberstamp magazine "Banzai", and annually to other small press zines such as "Oh, Comics!", and the "Big Book of Small Press".

One of the titles that I found 'unique' was the "Musicomics" issues he enclosed in the package.  Those had original songs concerned with life, love, and loss, the world plus its ecology.  Reminded me kind of the years of the 1960's when there was a lot of self expression published. Kind of 'Cool' in a way...

Plus with his comics so inexpensive, it would be easy for you to share them with others of like mind via snail mail, after YOU read them.  That would help spread the word about his efforts.
Matt prefers to sell his mini-comics via mail order. So I'm going to refer you directly to him:

Walking Man Comics, 123 Elm St., Hatfield, MA 01038!

The mini-comics are priced at $1.00 each post-paid.

A 12-page "Sampler" is also available for a first-class postage stamp.

You can also contact him via email for additional info at:

walingmancomics@comcast.net

My thanks to Matt Levin for bringing his mini-comics history and ongoing publishing format to my attention!

AND...My thanks again to all of YOU reading this blog and our archived blog posts!

TODAY'S FEATURETTE by Guest Blogger, Vinnie:

"Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs" - The NEW DVD version for 2010!

This movie is based on the children's book "Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs".  My dad,step-mom, and I rented "Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs" yesterday from RedBox and watched it last night. It is 90 minutes of lunacy and fun.

"Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs" is about a town that has food for weather. The invention of the machine that turns water into food was that of Flint Lockwood, a scientist who has always ha an idea to fix the world.

In the past, they had all been failures, but this time, his invention worked. He just needed extra electricity to power it but in doing so it went haywire, flew into the sky, and with the moisture in the clouds it made, and rained cheeseburgers.

Even though at first it was a failure to him, everyone loved it and asked him for requests of food. In doing so, the machine made everything bigger because the food had mutated. Then, it brought in the problem of food coming alive. Then, Flint deactivated the machine causing the world to go back to normal.

This movie was really funny, good, and interesting.  I recommend it to any age, particularily 5-9 but adults may find enjoyment in it too. I know my dad and Tina sure did!

Part of the reason it was so good was because the animation was incredible.  It looked almost real, but not quite there.

Below is the cover to the DVD so YOU can check it out!

Thanks Vinnie for blogging about what you watched last night! That Was a Fun Movie to Watch!  I remember you and Tina reading that book a few years ago.  Glad it was an interesting animated cartoon movie to blog about!

Above: The Front Cover To Comic Book Sized Issue #9 Now For Sale!

TODAY'S 'MAIN FEATURE':

Not too long ago I ran a "Featurette" here in my Blog on "Chase!", which at the time was a mini-comic! (Click here for that post. It's at the bottom right of the blog.)

I received a promo copy in the mail for issue #9, which to my surprise was a "full sized comic book".  Full size in regards to dimensions of the printed format.

There were eight (8) black and white interior pages, sandwiched between color front and back covers.

I found this new format for this series to be eye opening to say the least!

Yeah, I continued to enjoy Jim Main's writing for this series, but the art and lettering by John Lambert really jumped up and out at me in this larger size!  He puts a lot of effort into his artwork on this series, which can be seen even better in the new larger published size!

And the color covers by Marc Haines was a good difference from the earlier black & white covers too!

If YOU haven't caught the earlier 8 issues yet, there is still opportunity for you to do so!

Just click the following link:

http://mainenterprises.ecrater.com/product.php?pid=4267780.

There you will find a limited time special to pick up all 8 of the earlier mini-comic sized issues!

Here's Jim promotional verbage for this special:

For those who came in late, we have a small amount of complete sets of issues 1-8 of our award winning minicomic series CHASE!, that come with an exclusive, one of a kind index card sized b&w sketch of one of characters from the series, by series artist John Lambert. Only a few are available as the majority were sold at this years SPACE show. The set is 12.30, including shipping, in the USA. personal checks out to Jim Main or via paypal.

My thanks to Jim Main for bringing the new format of this series to my attention!

I realize that this "Featurette" may be a little late in getting published.

Matter of fact, one of them, Dave Fox, created an 'Event Page' at Facebook informing Facebook Friends and others that he will definitely be there tomorrow!

So, I wanted to feature just one of Dave's many works from the past below. Being a Fantastic Four Fan from 1962, this is one of the projects that he has been involved in that caught my eyes!

TODAY'S 'MAIN FEATURE':

It's NOT really a "Spotlight On...Geek Say What?" blog post today, but as much as an advance notice as possible that the hosts are playing their 1st Radio Show tonight!

Tina and I met them as a group for the first time at last Saturday's Long Beach Comic Con Expo, and of course I remembered two of them from the October 2009 Inaguaral Long Beach Comic Con, as we were all up close for the Opening Ribbon Cutting Ceremony!

However, I wasn't aware of this upcoming radio show until they told me this past Saturday.

After becoming Facebook Friends with all of them, I realized that they had a Facebook Fan Page, and was 'invited' to their 1st Facebook 'Event' Page, which I am going to post the link here for you to check out!

First, all three of them are students at Cal State Fullerton. Which reminded me of my family's connection to that school. For those of you that have attended the school, or know the area, the red house with the garage that looks like a barn, used to belong to my dad's brother and his wife!

Anyways, tonight is the big night for Cole, Alix, and Jason.

Here is the link to click to be 'taken' to the 'Event':

Geek Say What? - Our First Show!

Second, I'm not for sure what they are going to be 'covering' in this inagural show, nor upcoming ones, but their enthusiasm for this venture really 'showed' when I met them (again) at the LBCC Expo!

So I at least wanted to mention their 1st Show, plus give you a 'heads up' that it is happening tonight.  There should be a podcast afterwards, if you miss it.

For more info on that, and their upcoming radio shows, feel free to check out their Facebook Fan Page, and 'join' up if this is your thing!

Here's the link to their Facebook Fan Page:

Geek Say What? Facebook Fan Page!

My thanks to Cole, Alix, and Jason for coming up to Tina and myself at the LBCC Expo on Saturday, and telling us about their new venture on radio!  Good luck to you all on this 1st Show, and hopefully many more!

TODAY'S "FEATURETTE":

In today's "Main Feature" I stated that it wasn't a "Spotlight On..." post.

However, in this "Featurette" section today I am posting what could be considered a  "Mini Spotlight" on a great comics creator and his family!

That's because Tina and I met them in person at last weekend's Long Beach Comic Con Expo in Artists Alley!

That comics creator would be Mike Mignola, along with his wife Christine Beatty Mignola and daughter Katie, as pictured below!

I've said it a couple of times earlier this week, but again.. What was neat about the recent LBCC Expo was that it was large enough to have comics creators there of Mike's caliber, yet small enough that Tina and I could talk for a while with each creator, and in this case with their family also!

Click Here to see our HIGHEST PRICED comics, books and magazines listings!

My thanks to both Mike and Christine, who are actually both Facebook Friends of mine for the time they spent with us and for posing for the photos!  I hope you both and Katie had a Great Time at the Expo!

Tina and I can't always keep in stock Mike's publications at our own online store at http://www.ComicBooksCircus.com.  But you know... It was really more neat to see him, Christine and Katie at this more intimate setting than to talk about his work there.

I'll be sending a link of this post to Christine, who is also their Business Manager, to see what link she would like this post to 'point to'.

In the meantime, here is what I understand to be the 'Official Web Site' for 'Hellboy':

http://www.hellboy.com

If it isn't, I'll change it after hearing back from Christine!

-----------------------------

Because of great one-on-ones visits with comics greats like Mike along with his family; Tina and I are looking forward to the upcoming 2nd Annual Long Beach Comic Con.  That's the 3 day event at the end of October 2010.

Here's a link to the Con's Facebook Fan Page, so you can be interactive with them between now and October:

http://www.facebook.com/LongBeachComicCon?ref=ts

There you can also find out who's going to be there as guests, and links to where YOU can purchase advance tickets!

Tina and I are definitely booking October 29th thru the 31st!  I suggest that if YOU are in SoCal area during that time, that You should drop in at Least ONE of those Days!

---------------------------

Talking about comics and comic cons: if YOU are a comics creator, (writer, penciler, inker, colorist, letterer, etc.), OR even a Comics / Magazine Publisher, feel free to contact me regarding YOUR works for a possible mention / review!

TODAY'S 'MAIN FEATURE':

It's "Spotlight On...Christian Meesey - a.k.a. Meesimo" Today!

That's because we met him for the first time at last Saturday's Long Beach Comic Con Expo, and I was impressed with his works in caricatures, a web comic, a graphic novel, and a comic book!

That's pretty versatile if you ask me!

Christian was actually a pretty quiet guy for the little while that we talked with him at the LBC Expo, where he shared a table with Christian Beranek, (click here to see my blog on Beranek's works).

However, Christian's works more than speak for him!

First, even though it is not pictured above, Christian gave me a comic book titled 'Motley', which I found to be an interesting black & white read.  Here's a link to that project:

http://motleycomics.com/motleyhomepage/motleyhomepage.html.

Second, Chris also give me a copy of his "Contropussy: The Sketchbook Vol. 1" to read.  That led me to the actual web comic at: http://www.contropussy.com/?p=193 which is where you can start reading this web comic that started back in August 2009.

Third, his biz card gave me the address for his blogspot blog, where I found dozens of his caricatures, one of which I posted at the above left of this blog post:

http://meesimo.blogspot.com/.

I think that's enough for now to show you on what Chris has been doing. It appears that he has many facets, of which I believe you can enjoy viewing his works by following the above links.

My thanks to Christian - 'Chris' - 'Meesimo' for taking the time to show us just a few of works and the review copies that led me to blogging about him today!

PLUS my thanks to Christian Beranek for informing me that Christian Meesey would be sharing a table with him at the LBCC Expo!

TODAY'S "FEATURETTE":

It's another "Mini Spotlight" on a great comics creator today!

That's because Tina and I met him at last weekend's Long Beach Comic Con Expo in Artists Alley!

That comics creator would be Stan Sakai as pictured below with Michael!

I've said it earlier this week, but again.. What was neat about the recent LBCC Expo was that it was large enough to have comics creators there of Stan's caliber, yet small enough that Tina and I could talk for a while with each creator!

Click Here to see our HIGHEST PRICED comics, books and magazines listings!

My thanks to Stan for the time he spent with us and for posing for the photos!

For those of you that don't know of Stan's early history in comics, the following is excerpted from the Wikipedia entry on Stan Sakai:

"Born in Kyoto, Japan, Sakai grew up in Hawaii and studied fine arts at the University of Hawaii. He later attended the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California. He and his wife, Sharon, presently reside and work in Pasadena.

He began his career by lettering comic books (notably Groo the Wanderer by Sergio Aragonés and Mark Evanier) and wrote and illustrated The Adventures of Nilson Groundthumper and Hermy; a comic series with a medieval setting, influenced by Sergio Aragones's Groo the Wanderer. The characters first appeared in Albedo #1 in 1984, and were subsequently featured in issues of Critters, GrimJack, Amazing Heroes and Furrlough.

Sakai became famous with the creation of Usagi Yojimbo, the epic saga of Miyamoto Usagi, a samurai rabbit living in late-sixteenth and early-seventeenth-century Japan. First published in 1984, the comic continues to this day, with Sakai as the lone author and nearly-sole artist (Tom Luth serves as the main colorist on the series, and Sergio Aragonés has made two small contributions to the series: the story "Broken Ritual" is based on an idea by Aragonés, and he served as a guest inker for the black and white version of the story "Return to Adachi Plain" that is featured in the Volume 11 trade paperback edition of Usagi Yojimbo). He also created a futuristic spinoff series Space Usagi."

Tina and I can't keep Stan's publications in stock at our own online store at http://www.ComicBooksCircus.com.  It was really neat to see the the items that he brought for sale to the Expo that were one of a kind, plus his published works.

You can keep up with what Stan is doing by reading his own blog at:

http://usagiguy.livejournal.com/

Plus you can see more of Stan's works for sale at his own web site at:

http://www.usagiyojimbo.com/

You don't want to miss out on his 25th Anniversary collectibles on Usagi Yojimbo!

JIM MAIN PROFILE-PART 1

"Publishing was apparently the destiny of Jim Main, a resident of Brookfield, CT, who celebrates his birthday today, February 23rd. (Jim was born in the year 1955.)

An avid fan of comic books, from the moment he was introduced to them in the early sixties by his uncle, he soon became aware of fandom and fanzines and the publishing thereof by classmate Carl Gafford.

Carl, a senior at Jim's high school the same year he was a freshman, taught him the ropes of production via the dreaded spirit duplicator machine!

Jim's first 'zine, *PPFSZT!, published in the early 1970's, featured material such as an interview with Jim Aparo (conducted through the mail), a sf strip Jesse Stuart, by classmate Mike Tuz, plus then current comic book news and reviews and fiction by Main, Tuz and other friends.

More contacts and staff were made via zines such as the RBCC and the newest adzine THE BUYERS GUIDE TO COMICS FANDOM, (now known as CBG).

Soon he became a member of the first fanzine co-op, the Blue Plaque Publishing group, (now known as the United Fanzine Organization), which was created by Gafford originally, via good friend Steve Keeter and more contacts and contributors were established.

Certainly one to give readers their money's worth, he loved producing big books, some unfortunately with dire results, like the third issue of his comics anthology SPECTRUM...a 138 page full size ditto zine that had more than it's share of problems due to a finicky machine.

The problems were later smoothed out though in his later attempts, in his last issues of *PPFSZT! as well as new zine SATYR, but he had had enough of this method of printing and finally went to photo-offset with issue #6 of *PPFSZT! which was also one of the first digest sized fanzines.

As the 70's came to an end, Jim had published 9 issues of *PPFSZT!, 2 issues of SATYR, 3 issues of SPECTRUM, (formerly known as The Guilded Splinter), 1 issue of GNOME,  as well as filling in as publisher of 2 issues of friend Rod Synder's newszine The Esgaroth Express.

Some of the many creative individuals who had had their material published in Main's publications during these early years were Mike Tuz, Larry Johnson, Steve Keeter, Carl Gafford, Cara Sherman, Joe Jenkins, Rod Snyder, Carl Taylor, Mike Swanson, John Dwyer, Mike Canuel, Jack Monniger, Steve Lafler, Donna Hallecks, Frank Cirocco, Brent Anderson, Roland Austin, Wes Smith, Jack Kirby, Doug Hazlewood, Al Orne, Rich Hadden, Basil Wolverton, Neal Adams, Kurt Erichsen, Gil Kane, Steve Ditko, Ed Romero...and many others.

However, due to one thing or another, he was about to experience his first bout of gafiation...what many comic fans go through from time to time when situations arise that no longer permit continuing this interest...

That, though, would not be for very long..."

(Oh No... it's a Continued Story!) TO BE CONTINUED...(Sometime in the near future?!)....

My thanks to Facebook for reminding me that today is Jim's Birthday ahead of time... And to Jim, himself, for providing the photos of his earliest works so I could reprint them here!

TODAY'S "FEATURETTE":

It's a "Mini Spotlight" on another comics creator today!

That's because Tina and I met him at last weekend's Long Beach Comic Con Expo in Artists Alley!

That comics creator would be Bernie 'Berni' Wrightson as pictured below!

What was neat about the LBCC Expo was that it was large enough to have comics creators there of Bernie's caliber, yet small enough that Tina and I could talk for a while with each creator!

When Tina was ready to take a couple of photos for our Blog, I asked Bernie if he would pick up something on his table that he would like to pose with. He had all kinds of original artwork that he brought to sell at the convention

Imagine my surprise when he picked up the flyer I had given him to re-introduce myself and now Tina to him!

Click Here to see our HIGHEST PRICED comics, books and magazines listings!

My thanks to Bernie for the time he spent with us and for posing for the photos!

For those of you that don't know of Bernie's early history in comics, the following is excerpted from the Wikipedia entry on Bernie:

"In 1966, Wrightson began working for The Baltimore Sun newspaper as an illustrator. The following year, after meeting artist Frank Frazetta at a comic-book convention in New York City, he was inspired to produce his own stories. In 1968, he showed copies of his sequential art to DC Comics editor Dick Giordano and was given a freelance assignment. Wrightson began spelling his name "Berni" in his professional work to distinguish himself from an Olympic diver named Bernie Wrightson, but later restored the final E to his name.

His first professional comic work appeared in House of Mystery #179 in 1968. He continued to work on a variety of mystery and anthology titles for both DC and its principal rival, Marvel Comics. In 1971, with writer Len Wein, Wrightson co-created the muck creature Swamp Thing for DC. He also co-created Destiny, later to become famous in the work of Neil Gaiman. In 1971 he also published BadTime Stories, a horror/sci-fi comics anthology featuring his own scripts and artwork, each story being drawn in a different medium (ink wash, tonal pencil drawings, duoshade paper, screen tones, e.g., along with traditional pen-and-ink and brushwork).

Tina and I can't keep Bernie's early work in stock at our own online store.  It was really neat to see the original artwork that he brought for sale to the Expo.

You can see Bernie's work for sale at his own web site at:

-----------------------------

Because of great one-on-ones visits with comics greats like Bernie, Tina and I are looking forward to the upcoming 2nd Annual Long Beach Comic Con.

I've made a special blog post about: "How To Best Submit YOUR Publication For Possible Review!" for those creators / publishers that would like to possibly have their publications mentioned or reviewed, which could either be published in the 'Main Feature' or 'Featurette' sections.
