TODAY'S FEATURE - Blog #3308:

Back at Blog #3288 I announced a special Grand Prize to be awarded for my 2nd Annual Black Friday Event!

This was after Facebook Friend, Allen Bellman, saw that I was running the event and offered to contribute a personalized illustration for the Black Friday Comics Event!

Here's how Allen ended up saying what he would like to contribute as the 'Grand Prize':

"Michael, I will do a tight graphite pencil sketch 9x 12 of Cappy (Captain America), belting Hitler, or any other villain of that period."

He also went on to say..."I will put all but the kitchen sink into it. This one could have a value (of) $195", (plus shipping cost). "...This one will be special. I will spray it with a fixative so it doesn't smudge".

Well, late yesterday afternoon, Allen sent a me a scan of the finished illustration, shown at the above right!

I'm very pleased on how it turned out, and I am sure that the Grand Prize Winner, Mark Poe, will also be very pleased!

My Thanks to Mark for 'Liking' my New Facebook Fan Page AND clicking the 'Attending' button on the Event Page!  Which was all he had to do be eligible to win a prize at this 'virtual event' this past Black Friday!

And My Special Thanks to Mr. Allen Bellman for offering this illustration for my 2nd Annual Black Friday Event, this year sponsored by 'Michael D Hamersky On Comics', my New Facebook Fan Page!

If you are not aware of Mr. Bellman's history at Timely / Marvel Comics here's just a 'little bit':

"Allen Bellman was born in Manhattan and studied at the High School of Industrial Arts. He eventually became a staff artist at Timely during the Golden Age of comics. While still a teenager, he did the backgrounds for Syd Shores' Captain America in 1942, and eventually worked on titles such as: The Patriot, The Destroyer, The Human Torch, Jap Buster Johnson and Jet Dixon of the Space Squadron, All Winners Comics, Marvel Mystery, Sub Mariner Comics, Young Allies and so much more."

For those of YOU that would like a sketch similar to what you see at the top right, Mr. Bellman does commission sketches, Allen has a web site at:  AllenBellman.com, where you can contact him.

Currently for the upcoming 2011 Year, Allen is scheduled to be at: Tampa Bay Comic Con, MegaCon, Texas Comic Con, and the Florida SuperCon! For dates and times, please see those links!

TODAY'S FEATURE - Blog #3307:

My youngest son, Vinnie, has submitted another blog for publication! I appreciate his reading another comic book from the 'to be read and possibly reviewed' stack for publishing here!

------------------------

Hello all readers of this blog. I welcome you to "My Take" on the second issue of "Bear and Fox" #2.

Lately, I have been helping my dad do quite a few blogs, so I thought why not another one during my school break?!

While looking through the pile of comics to review, this one stood out to me. I remember this comic book from when I took the picture of the creator holding this comic and another comic of his own at the 2010 San Diego Comic Con International.

I had known from then I would enjoy it, if I got the chance to read it, and I did end up doing the exact thing. The following is my review of "Bear and Fox" issue 2.

The Front Cover - You can easily tell that there is going to be a war or a fight, as they are wearing the hats you would imagine people in the army to be wearing. They also sport the utility backpacks you would imagine the army using. And, we can't forget the gun and the bow that ties the package together. Now that we got that covered, let me explain the names.

Bear and Fox, are in fact animals. Despite their names, Bear is a bird, and Fox is a snake. I like how the creator made animals play the roles of humans. I have rarely seen many comics like this, but I liked it, as it's more imaginative. When I had finished reading the book, I noticed this time that the strange footprints of a character was in the background; the evil villain's eyes are behind the title; and a scribbled cat is sitting on the right of the fence. I guess I didn't notice it before, as it had nothing to do with the characters pictured in the front. Anyways, onto the next section.

The Inside Front Cover - It has a short "prologue" to the story, and it goes along with the sub-caption for this issue - "Recalled to Funny". Below that is a picture of a "disguise" they used in the comic. To the right of the picture, the creator states his special thanks.

The Interior Pages - The art has a goofy style which may be partially why I enjoyed this. I loved how they had guest characters from other comic strips, and how they interacted, as everyone was MUCH different here than in their own comics. It added a new perspective to view them in. (A parody?) I had quite enjoyed reading this comic book. The storyline was great, and was easily followed. It was a very funny plot, and I sure hope I get to read the creator's other comics and issues.

The Inside Back Cover - It has a white background, with the words, "I Miss You - I Miss You - I Miss You - Gloria In Excelsis Deo".  However, I don't know what he's meaning by this...

The Back Cover - It has more words that are in the same font as the Inside Back Cover, but I don't know what it is meaning.

I still don't know who the creator of this comic book is though. His name was nowhere to be found!

Overall, I really enjoyed the artworkk and story. I can't describe it other than being great. I would give the second issue of the comic "Bear and Fox" series a Near Mint (NM), a 9.4 out of a 10.0 grading scale.

~Vinnie!

NOTE From Michael: You know... I couldn't believe there wasn't any contact info in the comic book!  We did pick this up at a comic con, in the Small Press section at the SDCC as Vinnie stated above.

However, there should be a point of contact on where a reader could contact the self-publisher for at least issue #1!  There isn't even a web site that an interested reader can be referred to.  I did 'google' the words "bear and fox", and found the web site: BearAndFox.com.  But I shouldn't have had to 'google' it.  Especially for a 2nd issue of a comic book series.

I do realize that this was originally a web comic. But the printed version should be more helpful in promoting the web site. I also had to 'google' to find the creator's name as I didn't see a business card in the bag / board that I placed the comic book in at the SDCC.  The creator is Randall Christopher.

I also found a Facebook Fan Page for the comic book at Bear and Fox.

Don't get me wrong... I too liked this comic book, but the marketing aspect of printing a comic book, even it is only 12 interior pages, should adhere to what print comics normally have for contact info, and copyright info, etc.  Plus 'point' the reader to where they could find more 'online'. Which BTW, is where you can find this comic book's pages to read.  As I don't see where you can buy one of the 2,000 copies that were printed anywhere on the web site.

----------------------

Thanks Vinnie, for guest blogging here once again, and giving us your thoughts on this publication from a tween's POV!

And... If you liked Vinnie's 'Take' on this publication, he's also review blogged several other publications so far this year!

Including the graphic novel as shown to the left.  Here's his review blog on this publication: Vinnie's Take on Berona's War: Field Guide.  After reading that and thinking that this is something YOU would like to read and / or give as a gift for a special occasion, such as a Birthday Gift, here's a link to where you can purchase it online! Berona's War: Field Guide

Also...If YOU liked his review today, you may enjoy reading Vinnie's other reviews on: Space Punks #1The Daughters of Merlin #1Sea Ghost #1Mouse Guard: Legends of the Guard #4 (of 4)Clutch Cargo DVD, The All New Super Friends Hour Season 1 DVDThe Ultimate Underdog Collection Volume 1Planet HulkCoraline, Ponyo, X-Men Origins: Wolverine, Sonic the Hedgehog TPB Vol 1, Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs, The Possum #1 comic book, just to name a recent few!

Plus check out Vinnie's 'Look at The Captain Rochester Party for the Artists' at the recent 2010 Comic-Con International: San Diego! He really had fun meeting and having dinner with Sergio Aragones and others there at this exclusive after hours Con Party!

Besides Thanking Vinnie for his blog contribution today... My thanks again to all of YOU reading this blog and our archived blog posts, now over the 3,305 total posts in number! I do appreciate your continued reading and support of this Blog!

TODAY'S FEATURE - Blog #3306:

Okay, okay... I know!  I've only been blogging about this 'upcoming' book for like... Forever!

(Holy Multiple References, Batman! Look how many links are at Google alone for 'ComicBookCollectors Blog.com + "Gotham City 14 Miles"!)

But it's finally here!  Well, in several places at least!

I'm bringing this to your attention today, because at the top right of this blog post is the only photo I've seen so far of the World Premiere Book Signing in Toledo, Ohio from this past Saturday, December 18th!

That's because Toledo is the 'hometown' of Jim Beard, who is the Editor of this book that I have an essay / chapter in!

He, and a couple of other contributors to the book, including Michael Johnson, also pictured in that same photo, were in attendance for the signing. There were 14 authors in this book, one for each 'mile marker' from the Batcave to Gotham City!

Unfortunately, I wasn't able to attend, being out here in 'Sunny San Diego', (so why has it been raining for the past 4 days?!), and neither were several others...!

So I'm sharing with you the first photo I've seen of the event, PLUS letting you know that if YOU pre-ordered it at YOUR Local Comic Book Shop (LCBS), it could be there tomorrow, Wednesday December 22nd.  So check it out, citizen!

And... If you didn't pre-order it, it is now available from LuLu.com... So if you get any $cash$ for Christmas, think about ordering this book!  My Editor, Jim Beard, would love it!  Plus the Publisher, Sequart, of course, LOL!

So here's hoping that You get want you want for Christmas... And if it is a book on the 1960's Batman TV Show... Well, You know where to get one now!

For All of You that celebrate Christmas, here's an early "Merry Christmas" to you!

'Special', because these would have been the 1st Christmas Comic Books for those little ones named Frank, Carolyn, Michael, and Tina, had their parents picked them up for them!  Or if Santa Claus had dropped one down the chimney!

And not to leave myself out, I've added on one for me too, as I'm feeling a little 'merry' this morning! LOL!

For those of YOU that would like to share a Christmas comic book cover with your family members, or friends, here's the link to check them out: 'Christmas' in the Title Of Comic Books, from the GCD!

Although there aren't as many published nowadays, there have been 'Christmas' comic books published in each decade!

TODAY'S FEATURE - Blog #3304:

Vinnie is with us this weekend, and has his first blog ready to be posted.

I appreciate his reading and submitting his guest blog(s) for publishing here!

------------------------

Welcome one and all, to "My Take" on Space Punks #1!

As I was looking through comics to review for my dad's blog, this comic jumped out at me. This was the only comic in the large stack of comics to possibly review,  that was not realistic looking.

It also 'felt' age appropriate, as there were no blood, guts, gore, or any other thing I'd rather not see.

After reading just a short bit of it, I realized that this was a comic book series of major foolishness. Although there was that "Cartoon-y" feel to the art, which makes it seem suitable to young children, it is somewhat the opposite. There is a little bit of mild language, but most of it is censored with random symbols. Anyways, I will now describe the art and story, as well as the covers and interior pages.

The Front Cover is what mainly caught my attention. It looked 'cartoony', which if you have read a previous blog post of mine, you would know I love the style. It depicted half of a battle scene, that is continued on the Back Cover. More information on that later though. The name, "Space Punks" also made me interested. It made me think there was some mischief going on. My suspicions were correct.

The Inside Front Cover shows the logo seen on the Front Cover for the Space Punks. Below that, it states each job of the four people who worked on it. I now know that the creator of Space Punks is Josep Blas. Beneath all those "credits" is where Josep introduces the characters and their names. It helped, as some conversations you didn't see who was talking. You would have had to seen what names each voice was saying, so you could know which character was which. Below that is the copyright information, so let's move on to the Interior Pages.

The Interior Pages, sadly are just in black and white. As the cover was in color, I figured the rest of the book would be too. Despite the conditions that were well fit for being a dull and boring comic, this was great instead!

Some of the art had looked like sketches straight off the drawing board, but just something about it made me grow on it. I liked the story, and especially the dramatic and suspenseful ending.

Reading this makes me want to read the second and third book. However good it may have been, I think the writer could've left out a couple censored words. Not just the censor, but the word being censored as well. Maybe my age isn't the age group expected for this? I'm not entirely sure. Whatever the case is, it was still definitely a good comic.

The Inside Back Cover has two, what I believe are, advertisements. It is split in half equally, horizontally. The top one is for the Space Punks.

Josep stated his thanks for his readers, er well, reading. He also left his email for anyone to leave their thoughts for him about it. The advertisement below that was for Blambot, a comic lettering, font, and logo design company. I found it funny, as it was talking about radioactive Kung-Fu chihuahuas bombing an orphanage. Well, I at least found the part about the radioactive Kung-Fu chihuahuas funny...

The Back Cover, as I've already mentioned above, is a continuation of the Front Cover's image, being a 'wrap-a-round' cover.  This shows the enemies, and the rest of the battle scene. These are the same enemies you would have seen in the comic, had you read it. I had liked this whole battle scene, as it was in color, and not just black and white.

It was quite strange seeing it this way as a wrap-a-round cover, as lately, all I've seen on the back of a comic is either advertisements or other promotional stuff. I much prefer this, but any extra money for them helps, I guess, in recovering the cost of printing.

Overall, I really enjoyed this first issue of "Space Punks". I would have better enjoyed it, had it been in color, though. I liked the art and the story, and really don't have much to complain about. I would give this comic a comic book grade of a Very Fine / Near Mint (VF/NM), a 9.0 out of a 10.0 grading scale.

And hopefully, Josep can make a color version too! I haven't seen the Interior Pages of issue 2 or 3, but hopefully they are in color!

I thank you all for reading my review.

~Vinnie.

NOTE From Michael: You can check out more on this comic book series from the publisher via their web site at: SpacePunks.com.
