TODAY'S FEATURE - Blog #3297:

Comic Books are an American pop culture creation. At times they have been used for promotional purposes to sell cars, or burgers, or to introduce a company itself to the general public.

Other times they have been printed to get a point across to the reading public, such as during the 'Cold War' when comics warning about the 'Red Menance' were seen.

Well, back in the 1941 era, many comic book covers had a call for patriotism because of what happened on this date back in 1941.

The front page of the newpaper shown at the top right from Honolulu, Hawaii says it all.  War!

And the comic books also went to war!

There are hundreds of comic books from that era that were published.  I've chosen just a handful to show here today.

From Timely (now Marvel) Comics, Fawcett Comics, and DC / Superman Comics are comics cover dated from 1942 - 1943. Comics always seemed to be 'cover dated' a few months ahead since they were periodicals, and the publishers thought readers would want the newest comic magazines.  So they kept moving up the 'cover date' on the newstands!

I'm not old enough to remember that day.  My dad wasn't old enough to serve yet either.  However, 'war comics' were an early part of my growing up reading and then collecting comics. Possibly because I was a 'Navy Brat', and war comics were at the Navy Bases in relatively larger numbers in the barbershops and Navy Exchanges.

Not to glorify war, but the comic book covers shown at the top of this blog post helped to galvanize the younger readers, and also the servicemen to do what they could for the war effort.

A large readership of comics were servicemen in those days.  So it had to have been a good morale booster to see Captain America, Toro & Bucky, Superman and Batman, Spy Smasher, and others do what they could in the comics for the war effort.  Especially with the early days of the WWII looking so bleak for the Allies.

I just wanted to remember this day, now 69 years ago(!), via some of the comic book covers during that time period here today.

The sacrifices that our servicemen and servicewomen gave during that time period are the reasons why we are able to have the freedom that we still have today.

My thoughts go out to those that lost family or friends during that 'Day of Infamy', and in the days and years that followed until World War II ended... I may have not been there, but I still 'Remember Pearl Harbor' each year in this blog...

------------------

A Special Ending Note from Michael:

As shown in today's blog, there's a lot of history that can be read in comics.

Plus we are fortunate to still have with us several comics creators from that time period, including a Facebook Friend of mine, Allen Bellman, 'Who Was There' at Timely Comics during this time period, and who recently offered to illustrate a sketch for my 2nd Annual 'Black Friday Comics' Event on Facebook.  The Winner of the Grand Prize is to receive a fully illustrated sketch of Captain America belting a villain of the Prize Winner's choice. Similar to the one at the far right in the photo shown here.  I'll be sharing that here after it is finished.

For those of YOU that didn't know about the Event, Mr. Bellman also does commissioned sketches.  You can contact him via his web site at: AllenBellman.com, which has just gone through a nice looking revision.

TODAY'S FEATURE - Blog #3296:

Yesterday I started pulling boxes from my collections and recent purchases to start processing for selling on my own 'Local Comic Book Shop', (LCBS),  a.k.a. ComicBooksCircus.com.  For listing there either before or after our year end vacation at the end of this month.

In a box of my Elvis collectibles was a photo album that I hadn't seen in years.  Plus a photo of myself in 1977 at the Capitol Records Collectors Meet that I used to attend and sell at.  I immediately scanned it and placed at my new Facebook Fan Page at Hamersky.com. That's the photo at the top left of this post.

I used to get up really early and arrive at the Capitol Records Collector Meet when it was still dark!  Instead of setting up with tables, everyone basically sold out of the back of their car's trunk!  Since I had a mini-pickup, a Ford Courier with a shell on the back, I just opened it up and sold from the tailgate.

Once while up there in Hollywood, we took a drive afterwards, and wound up seeing the Elvis Film Festival being shown at the Encore Theater in the area, as seen in the 2nd photo from the top left of this blog.

Another time, we went to Bel-Air, where Elvis had his 'Hollywood' home.  Of course the gate was closed, but being the Elvis fan that I was, I had to stop and take a photo! (3rd pic from top left.)

Of course I also saw Elvis in concert several times, one of them being the November 1976 at the Anaheim Convention Center.  A photo from that concert is shown at the top right.  Plus the following article / review in the Los Angeles Times shortly afterwards.  (YOU can see the newspaper clipping and any of the photos posted at top in larger size, by simply left clicking the pictures.)

So what does the above have to do with comics?  Well... There are several comic book covers with Elvis on them.  Many of those were once part of my comics collection!

Years later there were more comic books published about Elvis, after his untimely death on August 16th of 1977. I've published a couple of the better ones at the bottom right of this post.

As a matter of fact, back in October of 2009, I blogged about that Elvis Presley Experience comic book series being re-formatted into a graphic novel presentation, as seen in this link.

So, here was an instance of my appreciation for Elvis, his records, and his comics all neatly intertwined with my major collecting 'bug', that of still collecting comics during the mid-1970's!

In summary, I currently don't have any Elvis related comic books listed in my ROCK N ROLL comics aisle at my store, but I do have a few Elvis items in that Elvis store aisle.  More to follow in the months to come, as I sort out what I'm keeping and what will be placed for sale!

TODAY'S FEATURE - Blog #3295:

Vinnie is with us this weekend, and he asked what was new that had come in during the past two weeks.

He saw the above comic book, and I explained that this was a 'one-shot' comic book on a character that was in a series of TPBs that Jay Piscopo was publishing.

Vinnie read the one-shot, and chose it to be his blog post for this weekend.  Thanks again, Vinnie!

------------------------

This blog post is a review featuring "My Take" on "The Sea Ghost #1", by Jay Piscopo.

Jay Piscopo was the writer and illustrator for all of this, except for a few pin-up posters at the end of the comic itself.

I have not read the "The Capt'n Eli" Trade Paper Backs, so that must be taken into account when you read this review.

My dad had received a package from Nemo Publishing, LLC. It contained "The Sea Ghost" and "The Undersea Adventures of Capt'n Eli", and my dad will later do a review on Capt'n Eli, while I am doing this one. Well, enough of all the fluff; onto the review itself!

The Front Cover has an illustration of the Sea Ghost. It looks just like the average comic: illustration, title, publisher, issue number, and cost. He appears to have his eyes glowing, and a bright white light encircling him. I do not particularilly recall this scene in the story, however.

The Inside Front Cover has a "Table of Contents", (TOC). The TOC lists the story, a pin-up by Ramona Fradon, a message to the readers, a pin-up by Danny Kelly and Robert Caine Jeffcoat, and finally, a pin-up by Jay Piscopo. Beneath that is all the copyright information, so no need to explain any further.

The Interior Pages contain the story, "The Sea Ghost in the Machine", story and art by Jay Piscopo. I liked everything: the story was exciting, and easy to follow, and the art was just fantastic. It would be hard to explain, but to me it seemed realistic, yet cartoony at the same time.

This had me wanting to read the "Undersea Adventures of Capt'n Eli", so I could learn more about Sea Ghost, especially after I read the promotional information that was enclosed in the shipping package, but not shown here.

The promos stated his origin is in the above book. I will definitely have to ask my dad if I can read that trade paper back once he finishes reading it. After the story, there is a pin-up of the Sea Ghost, drawn by Ramona Fradon. I thought it was good, but just a little 'old school' for me. It seemed as though he was posing, like he was waiting for a camera to take a picture, rather than him in his "natural habitat" fighting enemies.

After that, there is a message to the readers. It was saying about who or what inspired Jay Piscopo to create this character, and for the fans of Capt'n Eli who wanted him to make this one-shot comic. Then, there is a pin-up by Danny Kelly and Robert Caine Jeffcoat. I liked it, as there was more going on, and it was exciting, but I'm just not too fond of the style of art. The next pin-up was done by Jay Piscopo. Wow. This one was great! It was definitely not dull, and I love this style of art. I also loved the interpretation of who I believe is Poseidon. I don't know what else I could say except for I love it, but I'm sure I already covered that. It's just awesome! Plus there is one more by Jay included on page 36!

The Inside Back Cover has an advertisement for the first two volumes of "The Undersea Adventures of Capt'n Eli". The ad does make the series sound interesting.

The Back Cover has another style drawn of the Sea Ghost. In the message to the readers, Jay says it was his attempt at a Jack Kirby style of it. I like it, but personally, I like the one on the front cover more. But it is nice to have two different covers on the same comic book without paying for another separate variant cover issue!

Overall, I really liked this one-shot comic book, "The Sea Ghost". It has great art, and a great story, and I really enjoyed it. I wish it wsn't a one-shot comic, and that Jay could make another Sea Ghost comic.

I give this issue #1 a comic book grade, I would give it a Near Mint (NM), a 9.4 out of a 10.0 grading scale.

You should be able to find this comic book at your LCBS, as it is distributed by Diamond Comics Distributors. YOU can order it at YOUR LCBS by using  the UPC: 0 74470 26292 3 01 - Look for it in January PREVIEWS from Diamond Comics Distributors!

But if they don't have it, then you can see this comic and Jay's other works in progress at the following web site: Captneli.com

~Vinnie!

----------------------

Thanks Vinnie, for guest blogging here today, and giving us your thoughts on this publication from a tween's POV!  I'll share my thoughts on this comic book and / or the other work sent in by Jay in a future blog post!

BTW, If you liked Vinnie's 'Take' on this publication, he's also review blogged several other publications so far this year!

Including the graphic novel as shown to the left.  Here's his review blog on this publication: Vinnie's Take on Berona's War: Field Guide.  After reading that and thinking that this is something YOU would like to read or give as a gift for this Holiday Season, here's a link to where you can purchase it online! For those of you that didn't know me before today... I first set up as a 'dealer' at the 1972 San Diego West Coast Comic Con (SDCC) at the El Cortez Hotel. So I've been around comic conventions for a little while, LOL

My wife Tina and I now have an on-line exhibitor (dealer) table at the first "virtual" comic con titled the "Facebook Comic Con" (FBCC)!

You can view our dealer table and interact with us there on Facebook by clicking this link, which takes you to our table named: 'Facebook Comic Con | Make It So Marketing'.

Plus I have a chapter in a new book coming out in December of 2010, that is pictured above, "Gotham City 14 Miles"!  Click here to become a 'Fan' of the GC14M Facebook Fan Page!.

Also, if you are a Facebook member and would like to also join my Facebook Network, I would have liked to have sent you a Friend Request.  However,  I have reached the maximum of 5,000 Facebook Friends and Fan pages 'limit' already, so I have now added on a personal Facebook Fan Page of my own!

TODAY'S FEATURE - Blog #3294:

Early last month my wife, Tina LoSasso, immediately guest blogged her review on 8-9-3 the Graphic Novel (GN) after finding it at the 2010 Long Beach Comic Con, as seen in this link!

That's because she found it to read "like a John Woo film, plenty of action, deceit, choreographed violence, beautiful women, and a surprising twist at the end. This entertaining tale has everything but the booming sound track!"

Which is why I'm adding my thoughts here today!

I finally read it over the Thankgiving / Black Friday holiday weekend.

I must say that Tina didn't overstate the quality of the production value of this GN!

Instead of my usual 'breakdowns' of what the GN consists of, I'll just say this... This GN is definitely worthy of being converted into either a live action film or an animated one!  And Tina has already left her copy with a film producer!

Also... I'll match Tina's rating of the GN plus add it a few points higher in my own rating.

Rating: a NEAR MINT (NM) 9.4 out of a 10.0 comic book grading scale.

I'm also going to recommend this as  'Holiday Gift' for those of you looking for a 'mature' graphic novel, that is NOT 'over the top' in presentation!

For those of you that would like to get your friends reading graphic novels, this could be a good choice, taking into account the violence and some sexual content.  It's NOT for kids, just like John Woo movies aren't!

Here is the link to where you can find more on this graphic novel.  Plus this is where you can purchase it online, at WayOutComics.com.

--------------

Note from Michael:  My thanks to Jack Hsu for bringing this graphic novel to Tina's attention at the 2010 Long Beach Comic Con!  This was the one that she wanted to read first and possibly review blog.

Also, my thanks to Tina for reminding me this past week that I had not yet read this GN she so highly praised!  Since she had already blogged about it, I thought I should read other publications that we also received first, but darn she was right, (again!). LOL!
