TODAY'S FEATURE - Blog #3346:

I was contacted by one of the creators of this series of comic books, Cameron Douraghy, via phone.  Talking with Cameron, I mentioned that I only possibly 'review blog' comics / graphic novels from 'hard copies', (a policy since March of 2010 when I realized that I was being flooded with .pdfs and not getting to them as I don't use my laptop for reading for pleasure).

While talking with Cameron on the phone, I was checking with my laptop on whatever I could find on the series.

I was surprised to see a familiar name in the credits.  Karl Altstaetter was the illustrator for all four issues of the series published thus far.  Surprised because I've seen Karl at a few comic cons in the fast few years, and don't remember seeing this series on his table in the Artists Alleys he has been in...

(Note: I have review blogged Karl's own self-published series of 'Emerald City Blues (a.k.a. ECB) in this Blog, starting back in December of 2009.)

So even though the storyline was one I was not familiar with... The fact alone that Karl had illustrated it, made me receptive to seeing an issue in hard copy format.

I was expecting to see the 1st issue of the comic book in the mail, and was surprised / pleased to see all four issues printed to date in the package.

When I was ready to start reading them, I realized that there wasn't any issue number on the front covers.  So I looked on the inside front cover at the bottom left to see any publishing date.  So placing them in date published order, I started reading them...

It appears that the series has been published similiar to what I can best describe as in 'Star Wars' order.  No, the storyline isn't 'sci-fi', but instead, just like 'Star Wars', the middle 'episode' was presented first, and then after the middle to 'end' was published, the first episode was presented / published.

No wonder I was just a little 'confused' when reading!  Add to that fact, this 'Rostam' storyline is based on 55,000 couplets, which contain over 100,000 verses, and this series has incorporated what it could in four isues so far!

As a little bit of background for those of you that aren't aware of the story of Rostam, (neither was I!), here is a brief background from the Wikipedia entry:

"Rostam (pronounced [ɾostæm, ɾʊstæm]) is the national hero of Greater Iran from Zabulistan in Persian mythology and son of Zal and Rudaba. In some ways, the position of Rostam in the historical tradition is parallel to that of Surena, the hero of the Carrhae. His figure was endowed with many features of the historical personality of Rostam. The latter was always represented as the mightiest of Iranian paladins, and the atmosphere of the episodes in which he features is strongly reminiscent of the Arsacid period. He was immortalized by the 10th century poet Ferdowsi of Tus in the Shahnameh or Epic of Kings, which contain pre-Islamic folklore and history. He also called Rostam "Dastan" (pronounced das-TAN), which means strong."

Which is very helpful to read prior to reading the series, IMO.

Not that this series isn't a fun-to-read series, but like another series that I've recently read and review blogged, (Yi Soon Shin from Onrie Kompan Productions), I didn't know the historical story of the main character, nor the incidents in history that the series covered.

However, just like the other series I just mentioned, I found myself engaged in reading each issue.  It was helpful that each issue was basically a self contained story. Which may have been why the series is not numbered on the front cover...

Here's what the publisher has for the promo info on the series via the web site:

"Rostam: Tales from The Shahnameh is the 1st series of books from the Publishers at Hyperwerks, bringing Ferdowsi's Masterpiece to life into the American Comic Book Genre. Written over 1,000 years ago, "The Shahnameh" chronicles Persia's rich Mythological and Historical traditions and contains some 100,000 verses of poetry (making it over seven times the size of Homers' Illiad)."

So what's my 'take' on this series of comics?

As stated earlier, I was not aware of the background story of this main character.  It was 'foreign' to me.  However, because of the way the writer enveloped me into the storyline that was being presented, and the fact that I was already 'partial' to Karl's style of artwork, I found myself wanting to read issue after issue.

The fact that the storyline seemed a little 'out of order' to me in order of being published was explained to me by Cameron when calling him on the phone after reading the series.  This will be addressed when a TPB is published, possibly at the end of 2011 or early 2012.

I found that after reading the four issues, that this was a good 'intro' to the story first written by Hakīm Abu'l-Qāsim Firdowsī Tūsī,  more commonly transliterated to Ferdowsi, (940 C.E. - 1020 C.E.).

I admire the creators of this series, who have taken an immense body of work, and transformed it into a comic book series.  That had to take a lot of effort to do! And of course with so much to draw from, the storyline is not over yet!

My understanding is that the creators want to add additional pages to a projected TBP compilation of what has been published so far.  That TPB would be a nice volume to have on a book shelf, but being more a fan of the 'floppy' comic book format, I would suggest picking up one of the issues published thus far, to see what is happening with 'Rostam' in a comic book format.

My Review Rating for the four issues published thus far in the series is a VERY FINE PLUS (VF+) 8.5 out of a possible 10.0 Comic Book Grading scale.

Here is the link to the Facebook Fan Page for Rostam - Tales From The Shahnameh, where you can be interactive with the creators.

Here is the link to web site for The Shahnameh, where you can see more of the creators have published so far.

I look forward to seeing more from the creators on this storyline in the months to come.

My thanks to Cameron Douraghy, for following up with me on the status of a possible review blog for this series of comics!

TODAY'S FEATURE - Blog #3345:

Today, 'Time' has really flown by!

Even though I was up at my 'usual' 5 AM schedule, I haven't been able to post a blog.

That's because I have so many different projects going on right now... And no, I'm not looking for sympathy, as the New Year of 2011 has started off Grrreat for Tina and myself!

Instead, I have been tweaking 'Fan Pages' that I have built for Tina LoSasso's business online, or for her clients, or mine that have requested Facebook Fan Pages either be started from the ground up, or revamped for them.

I'm not going to tell you the benefits of having a Facebook Fan Page here.  By now, if you are a comics creator, whether for print or webcomics, you know you should have one, especially if you are self-published, or hope to oneday monetize your webcomic!

Yet, for several different reasons, most of you don't have one...Yet.

Indeed, I've seen several 'Facebook Friends' use their own personal profile pages on Facebook to promote their works.  Nothing wrong with that...

However, there are several out there, who as 'businesses' / 'comic cons' / etc., are using personal 'profile' pages to invite others on Facebook to be 'their Facebook Friends'.  I suggest those of you doing so, to take a look at Facebook's TOS, (terms of service).  That is not allowed, and Facebook is starting to 'police' that infraction of their TOS.

So that is one more reason for YOU to start a Facebook Fan Page, now!

Tina and I have one personal 'profile' page each, plus several 'Fan Pages', and I even have a 'Group Page' in alliance with a virtual comic con on Facebook.

Plus the 'maximum' of Facebook Friends an individual's personal profile page can have is 5,000 Friend including whatever number of 'Fan Pages' they like.  That is not as hard to max out as you would think it is to do!

So here's what I'm going to do.

I'm suggesting as I 'tweak' the newest Facebook Fan Pages that either Tina or I 'own', that you follow along with the progress.

So today, I'm posting an invite to you to 'Like' one of my 'Fan Pages' by clicking this link to it: Michael D Hamersky On Comics, and follow what I am doing there, as that 'Fan Page' is most compatible to what this blog's main theme is... Comics!

Yesterday I added new tabs: 'Shop!', 'Blog', and 'Publicity'.  Today, thanks to a Facebook Friend (and 'Fan'), I added on an 'Author' tab.

Additionally each of the new tabs that 'warrant' it, now 'greet' the visitor to the tab page, by their name.  Yeah, it might be a little 'spooky' to someone coming to the tab page for the first time, but I'm placing the 'greeting' where it isn't so obtrusive.  Check it out for yourself, at the 'Like!', 'Shop!', and 'Blog' tabs.

There are more 'tweaks' to come.  And I'll be sharing them with you at that 'Fan Page' in the days / weeks to come.  The nice thing, and also a mild 'irritant' at times for most people, is that nothing stays 'static' on webpages, whether Facebook, or eBay, or other websites that you use!

In closing, I want to thank all of you readers that have come to this post, or any of my previous posts.  There are many readers that are interested in breaking into the comics 'world', in whatever way they can, either self-published hard copies, webcomics, or work-for-hire individuals for larger publishing companies. And there are many readers who just would like to know what is going on with the comics world, but just from the sidelines as they don't intend to do more than enjoy the output of work and enjoy it.

To all of you, I thank you for reading this post, and encourage you to check out what's happening next!

(Note: For those of you that want more than just what I have posted here, or at the Fan Page, and wish to inquire about our services, feel free to click the 'Publicity' tab on the Fan Page.)

TODAY'S FEATURE - Blog #3344:

May There Be Many Happy Returns of the Dapper Men!

Holding "Return of the Dapper Men" (Archaia Entertainment) in your hands, you know you're in for something special.

To start, you'll need to use both hands -- it weighs over two and a half pounds! It's oversized - not like a graphic novel, more like a children's book. The production value is astonishing. This is a book that is as well dressed as the Dapper Men themselves with gold lettering, red cloth binding and a page holder.

Open the cover and you're transformed to the land of Anorev, a place where time has ceased to exist, the children have never grown up, and the robots never stop working. Look closely as you turn the beautifully illustrated pages or you may miss some of the story - as I did - and have to backtrack. You'll marvel as the words weave round the artwork propelling the story forward.

"Return of the Dapper Men" is a fable for all ages. Children and adults alike will pore over the stunning artwork and enjoy the whimsical story of boy Ayden and robot Zoe and how the return of those well-dressed men sets time moving again.

The dialogue reminded me a bit of the first time I read The Little Prince - in high school French class. All my  classmates seemed to have read it as children and had an English/French side-by-side version. I struggled along with my French only version trying to understand why the little royal was in love with a rose. So, if you find yourself, like me, getting a little lost in Anorev, just keep twirling along. You'll get there.

What is really wonderful about "Return of the Dapper Men" is the illustrations. Janet Lee's work is what will make you keep coming back to the book again and again. Fans of fantasy fables, steampunk or Alice in Wonderland will love "Return of the Dapper Men." If you're looking for a special gift for a family with children, this is it!

Rating:  VERY FINE / NEAR MINT (VF/NM) 9.0 out of a possible 10.0 comic book grading scale.

~Tina LoSasso

Publisher's Promo:  Long from now in a land called Anorev, there lived, well, to be honest, not many people. There were no adults, only children. Why? That’s coming. Patience is something that always needs learning. But it hadn’t always been that way. Nor had this always been the name of this place. Some thought the land was named after a book, but there was no way to tell. There were very few books left and those that remained were not used for reading at all but for standing upon, for there was much that was out of reach.

And so begins RETURN OF THE DAPPER MEN, a tale of a world in between time, where children have played so long it’s almost become work, machines have worked so long they have begun to play, and all the clocks have stopped at the same time. This is how this land has remained, until 314 dapper-looking gentlemen rain down from the sky and set off in different directions to start the world again. Now Ayden, the only boy to still ask questions; Zoe, the robot girl all other machines hold dear; and the Dapper Man known only as “41″ must discover what happened that made time stop, understand what their true places are in this world, and learn what “tomorrow” really means. The sun is setting for the first time in memory, and once that happens, everything changes.

RETURN OF THE DAPPER MEN is a visually stunning fairy tale that combines steampunk with fantasy and science fiction with Renaissance style, brought to life from the minds of award-winning playwright and comic book writer Jim McCann (New Avengers: The Reunion) and critically acclaimed visual artist Janet Lee. Together, these two have created a world where J.M. Barrie, Lewis Carroll and Maurice Sendak meet Jim Henson and Tim Burton—all sharply dressed in a pin-stripe suit and a dapper bowler hat. Tick tock, time is about to start.

Retail Price $24.95   Page count: 128 pages

Format: hardcover book, 11.1 x 9.7 x 0.8 inches, full color

My thanks to Archaia for bringing their comics & collected editions to my attention at the 2010 San Diego Comic Con International!  As stated in earlier blogs, both Tina and myself have enjoyed many of the published works from Archaia Entertainment since then!

TODAY'S FEATURE - Blog #3343:

I have seen Jamilyn Parks at several comic cons during the last couple of years. Usually he is in an 'Artists Alley' area, busy illustrating commissioned sketches for fans of his.

Here is an earlier blog where Jamilyn was also featured in, when I review blogged Pink Power #1. I had picked up the comic book at the 2010 Wizard World Anaheim Comic Con.  Jamilyn is pictured there along with Zen, and Lindsey Zimmerman.

At the recent 2010 Long Beach Comic Con, (LBCC), I asked Jamilyn if he had any recent published comic book work that I could possibly review in this blog of mine.

Jamilyn pulled out a copy of 'Tales From The Comic Bug: Infected! #1' that I had see around at other comics creators tables in Artists Alley.

I figured that this had to be an 'anthology', which are usually very hard to review blog, as there are so many contributions of works to these.

I was right, so instead of 'reviewing' this comic book, I'll just center on what Jamily contributed to this comic book, which BTW, is a publication from one of the better known LCBS in the Los Angeles Metro Area!

Jamilyn was the cover colorist, and was involved with the design & production of the comic, as well as a letterer on it.  The comic book's front cover definitely sets the tone for what is on the interior pages!

If you haven't seen this yet, you should check it out... Besides Jamilyn's works on it, there are contributions by Ralph Miranda, Bobby Mort, Chris Patton, Luis Calderon, Dean Yeagle, Evan Ferrell, and others. The comic book was first published July of 2010, so there are still probably copies available, as I saw it on several of the creators tables at the LBCC.

You can see more of Jamilyn's works, plus even 'commission' him, by checking out these websites:

ComicArtCommission.com, Jamilyn Parks on DeviantArt.com, The Sketch Files blog by Jamilyn, and Jamilyn's web site at Carbonmade.com. Note: Jamilyn's works also show up on other sites, but I'm just listing his sites here.

Plus if you are in the SoCal area, be sure to check out when he will be at another comic convention, where you can 'commission' him to illustrate a sketch for you.

Thanks again Jamilyn, for the review copy that included your work!

The above is my 'Spotlight On... Jamilyn Parks', one of several 'Spotlight On' blogs I've done over the years...

Matter of fact, YOU can check out the 'Spotlight On...' blogs by clicking this link where there currently are over 837 different links served up by Google!

Last year at this time, I blogged about the 99th Anniversary of Ronald Reagan's birth, as seen in this blog post.

I was going to wait to post this blog about the Centennial of Ronald Reagan's birth to coincide with the 1st Day of Issue of the new stamp honoring President Ronald Reagan on February 10th, but there has been so much on what has been going on in Simi Valley, California at the Ronald Reagan Library this past week, that I decided to go ahead and post this blog today on the anniversary date, and then re-mention it at my Facebook 'Fan Page' on the 10th again.

Today is also Super Bowl Sunday, and I didn't want that to overshadow this blog post... So posting it today and then mentioning it again on my Fan Page on the 10th is probably the best way of celebrating / honoring him.

First of all, there will be a new US Postal stamp issue as stated above on February 10th.  That stamp is shown at the top left of this blog.  Here is the info from the USPS about the stamp itself:

The Postal Service recognizes the centennial of the birth of Ronald Reagan (1911-2004), America’s 40th President. The stamp issuance is one of a number of centennial events taking place across the nation in 2011 to commemorate Reagan’s life and legacy. The stamp goes on sale Feb. 10.

Ronald Wilson Reagan was a well-known Hollywood actor who appeared in more than fifty films before becoming a prominent political leader. Distinguished by his charisma and oratorical skills, he was one of the most influential Presidents of the 20th century.

In the year following Reagan’s death on June 5, 2004, the Postal Service issued a memorial stamp honoring him for his service as a U.S. President.

The stamp art, by Bart Forbes of Plano, TX, was created in oil wash on board. It is based on a photograph of Reagan taken in 1985, during his second term as President, at his beloved "Rancho del Cielo" (Ranch in the Sky), near Santa Barbara, CA.

So, after the 1st Day of Issue ceremony is completed, the USPS will be selling the stamps at your local post office.  Since it is a 'Forever' stamp, there will be many of these printed, so the odds of it being a 'collectible' stamp are pretty slim.  However, being an ex-stamp collector, it is pretty nice to see our 40th President of the United States being honored this way.

In addition, as I mentioned in my blog post from last year at this time... Ronald Reagan was also the 'Star' of a really curious comic book series from SolSon Publications.

Yes, Ronald Reagan had been shown on comic book covers before, after all he was a Movie and TV Star... but it was the SolSon Publications' Limited Series (Mini-Series?) from 1986, titled "Reagan's Raiders" that a LOT of people still don't know about.

That's Right!

The Ultimate Patriotic Super Heroes Team 'Reagan's Raiders' Existed Back In the 1980's!

Actually published in 1986-87, there were three issues of this title of 'Reagan's Raiders'.

Created by artist Rich (Deathlok / Black Panther) Buckler and actor Monroe (Alice's Restaurant / Goodbye Columbus) Arnold, this was part of the black and white comic book explosion when hundreds of new comics were published by many publishers now defunct!

How did this happen??  Well their secret origin is as follows:

Using a 'physo-nuclear conversion process', Project Alpha Soldier staff scientist Professor Cashchaser transformed President Ronald Reagan, Vice President George Bush Sr., Secretary Of Defense Casper W. Weinberger,  and Secretary of State George P. Shultz into the patriotic super-team known as Reagans Raiders!

Such an 'Oddball Comics' series, (acknowledgment to Scott Shaw! for the term), as it may seem, this series was actually a good read, and not derogatory to the then President as you may think it would be!

Here is the link to the GCD gallery of comic book covers for this 3 issue comic book series.

I keep coming accross issues of this comic book here and there, and usually pick them up for resale, because of the 'cross-over effect' between comic book collectors, political items collectors, and Hollywood memorabilia collectors.

If you don't have a copy, well... we currently have listed a few copies in our own online store at: ComicBooksCircus.com!

An interesting side note:  In researching for any updates since last year, I came across another "Reagan Raiders", a high school in Austin, Texas! However this high school was NOT named after Ronald Reagan.)

For more in-depth articles on Reagan's Raiders - the Comic Book Series, please see these links:  Don Markstein's Toonopedia entry, the Wikipedia for Solson Publications, and those found in Google among others.

Please note:  Almost all of the articles that mention this comic book series either pan it or deride it.  I would assume that would be due to the 'politics' of the writers of the articles themselves, plus the premise was a little 'out there'.  I normally don't 'play politics' in this Blog of mine.  I present articles for my readers and usually keep 'my own political beliefs' out of the blog.  I have blogged on a wide range of comics related themes from Barrack Obama to Joe Biden to John McCain to Ronald Reagan and several persons inbetween those political viewpoints.

This blog post is to honor Ronald Reagan the man and celebrate his Centennial.

For more info on him, you can multiple links in Google.  However I would start with the Wikipedia entry as found here.  Which does not seem to carry as much political bias.

I was 28 years old when Ronald Reagan became President.  I lived through the 8 years that he was President.  That period was among the best years of my life, both personally and professionally.  This blog today is my way of honoring his memory during the Centennial Celebration...
