TODAY'S FEATURE - Blog #3539:

This past weekend Tina and I attended the 3rd Annual Long Beach Comic & Horror Con in Long Beach, California.

While walking through the vast Artists Alley of the exhibit floor at this con, we both came up to the Comic Book Junkie / Hyno Comics table. I recognized the signage from the wall posts on the LBC&HC's Facebook wall, that George Chase had been posting on.

I said hello to both George Chase, (creator & writer), and Lance Sawyer (cover & interior art) and proceeded to check out issue #1 of their new title 'Comic Book Junkie' issue #1.  I had mentioned previously on George's work at this blog and at my own Facebook fan page as seen here.  Same with Lance, as seen here.

So what's this comic book about?  Here's what the publisher has as a promo:

"If you are looking for Superheroes, yeah we got 'em, but they're going to cost you.  I'm going to let you in on a secret. A dark, violent, and humourous secret.

A secret about being a comic book dealer back in the 1990s.  You're about to get a glimpse behind the curtain through the drug glazed eyes of people who made their livings selling you books about men in tights.

It was the 90's and it was good to be a comic book dealer.

This was a time of the variant cover, speculative buyers, and suckers. The comic companies were turning out crap that fanboys were more than happy to spend their hard earned cash on and there were dealers like us woh cashed in on it."

So... What's 'My Take' on this comic book?

First up was the front cover.  From the first glance at this cover, you know it is going to be 'hard hitting'.   The 'warning' label at the bottom right of the cover confirms that.  The use of the black / grey / white / red colors on the cover are striking.  Good first impression!

Inside front cover - Good introduction with credits immediately shown.  I had picked up the regular cover by Lance Sawyer.  There is also a 'variant cover' by Ryan Kincaid.

Splash page -  This does make a 'splash' going into it.  Hard hitting and with the title of the story being:  "Bitch Betta Have My Comics!", the warning label on the front cover is justified right off the bat.

Interior pages - This is a 20 page black & white interior pages comic book. The storyline is set at a good pace and the artwork totally blends in with the story. This is a 'continued series', but the first chapter wraps up nicely.  There are a few curse words used in the dialogue as the story unfolds.

The inside back cover is a preview of what is to come in the future... With a photo of George and Lance with their thanks to those that have already supported the effort on getting this series off the ground.

The back cover is a collage of ads which is fine.

I found this first issue a good intro to the series, and the set up for the next issue, "Going To The Show", a logical step in telling the story arc. Where it is going from there... I don't know?!

The last time I personally had set up as comic book dealer was in the boom years of the early to mid 1990's, (well... until this past August at the So Cal Comic Con, 20 years later!), but I don't remember having this much 'fun'! Of course, I was married then, and the comic book setup at cons was a part-time gig for me!

I'm looking forward to seeing where George & Lance take us on this series!

My comic book grade for this first issue is a VERY FINE / NEAR MINT (VF/NM) 9.0 out of a possible 10.0 comic book grading scale. I do want to emphasize the 'Warning' label at the bottom right of the front cover.  'Parental Advisory Explicit Content.  It says what it means, folks!  No young children!

For those of you on Facebook... You can find more info, and 'Like' the Fan Page at:  Comic Book Junkie #1, to interact with the comic book creators and other fans.

You can find this comic book online for purchase at this link:  Hypno Comics

My thanks to George Chase and Lance Sawyer  for bringing this comic book series to my attention!

BTW, if YOU are in the Los Angeles Metro Area THIS upcoming weekend...November 5th & 6th... Hypno Comics / Comic Book Junkie will have a booth at the upcoming ComiKaze Expo, which I have blogged about at this link!

Photo at top of this column:  After the 'Monsterverse Comics Rips Open Flesh And Blood!' panel at the 2011 Long Beach Comic & Horror Con, (L-R) Robert Tinnell, Michael D Hamersky, & Sam F Park!

TODAY'S FEATURE - Blog #3538:

This past weekend Tina and I attended the 3rd Annual Long Beach Comic & Horror Con in Long Beach, California.

Before we finished walking through the Artists Alley of the exhibit floor there, we both attended two panels, one of which was the 'Monsterverse Comics Rips Open Flesh And Blood!'.

There I met again, Kerry Gammill and Sam F Park of Monsterverse.  I had already review blogged their earlier publication, "Bela Lugosi's Tales From The Grave #1' and indeed proclaimed it 'The Best Anthology Comic Book of 2010 earlier this year!'.

So yes, I was very interested in seeing their newest title, 'Flesh And Blood', at this panel, as I hadn't yet been at their table in Artist Alley.

Kerry Gammill and Robert Tinnell were already there at the room when Tina and I arrived.  When Sam walked in with more attendees that were sitting in the audience, the panel started.

What I saw on the screen for both 'Flesh And Blood', and 'Bela Lugosai's Tales From The Grave', reinforced the thought I had earlier that this Monsterverse company is one to watch!  (And no, it is NOT a client of mine or Tina's.)

After the panel I met Robert Tinnell for the first time, who is the author of the main feature in this graphic novel, and the scripter of the second feature, which I'll mention in this review.  (Neil Vokes, the artist of the first feature, wasn't attending this comic con.)

So what's this graphic novel about?  Here's what the publisher has as a promo:

"From acclaimed writer and artist team Robert Tinnell and Neil Vokes (THE BLACK FOREST, THE WICKED WEST) comes a sensuous horror epic in the spirit of European horror cinema of the 1960s and '70s. The death of Carmilla, the seductive vampire, sets in motion events that lead to a monumental struggle between the forces of darkness and a brave band of mortals. Its members include a reluctant young Abraham Van Helsing and a mysterious monster hunter struggling to keep his own inner monster at bay. When Baron Frankenstein is recruited to add his scientific genius to the group's arsenal, Dracula and his undead kingdom face the possibility of total annihilation. Cover art by Dan Brereton."

So... What's 'My Take' on this graphic novel?

First up was the front cover.  As stated above, it was illustrated / presented by Dan Brereton.  The artwork on the cover was enticing enough to make me place this graphic novel on the top of my 'To Read / Possibly Review' stack, which grew even taller after walking the exhibit floor of the 2011 Long Beach Comic & Horror Con!

The Inside Front Cover - was the list of credits for this series, showing that once again, many hands were involved in bringing this project to fruition.

The Introduction - by Tim Lucas was next. It built up the backstory behind this series. Plus it presented that... "What Flesh And Blood is, in some respects, is the wish fulfillment of Hammer's fan base". (Referring to the Hammer Films company.)

The graphic novel story, chapter 1, started next. I was impressed by the colors right away on the first page. (Colors are by Matt Webb.) Then the following page's lettering, (by Mike Anderson and Rick Lebo), came into play. Nice addition to the mix!

Turning the page I found that this series is NOT intended for younger audiences, (NOT mentioned on the front or back covers!).

The writer, Robert Tinnell, immediately brings the reader into the story with Laura's encounter with Carmilla!

The introduction to the rest of the cast of characters flowed nicely by the writer, and the sequential illutrations by Neil combined to make this a fine intro to the series of graphic novels.

By Chapter 4, I am totally into this series!  It is however the end of this main feature in Book One!

There is a three page text piece with illustrations next, titled 'Flesh... And Blood... And Fantasy' by Bruce G Hallenbeck, with more background history of Frankenstein, Carmilla Karnstein, and Count Dracula, with a tie-in to Hammer Films.

Then the reader is treated to a second feature titled 'Operation Satan' with cript by Robert Tinnell and art by Bob Hall, (Yes, THAT Bob Hall!), with tones by Kerry Gammill and letters by Rick Lebo.  It is a five page feature, and yes... to be continued as well.

What follows that was a feature called 'Art of Flesh And Blood' with illustrations by others known in the comics field.

Then there was the Neil Vokes Flesh And Blood Sketch Gallery, a four page feature showing character sketches for characters used in the main feature.

The interior pages ended with 'The Creators' credits on Robert Tinnell, Neil Vokes, Bob Hall, and Matt Webb.

The inside back cover is dedicated to Ingrid Pitt, and the back cover had a one word review by Guillermo del Toro that wraps up Book One!

Whew!  That's quite a presentation to what is basically is Book One of Four in this graphic novel series!

I enjoyed the back stories presented in the Intro, the section by Hallenbeck, and The Creators credits page.  The art galleries were a nice touch also.

I'm not for sure why the story 'Operation Satan' is in this graphic novel series, but the artwork by Bob Hall with tones by Kerry Gammill is beautiful! Perhaps the Editor or the Publisher will explain why this second feature is in this graphic novel series in a future book of the series?

My comic book grade for this first book in a four book series is a NEAR MINT MINUS (NM-) 9.2 out of a possible 10.0 comic book grading scale.

TODAY'S FEATURE - Blog #3537:

This past weekend, Tina and I attended the 3rd Annual Long Beach Comic Con... Which 'added' the word 'Horror' to its name, making it the 'Long Beach Comic & Horror Con'. We both enjoyed attending this convention, and felt that the name change was fitting, as this con keeps taking place during the Halloween season!  (Note: Here's my review blog on the 2011 con.)

Today is October 31st of 2011... And it is time for Halloween! Besides getting interested in it by attending the Long Beach Comic & Horror Con, and seeing the attempt for the largest attended Zombie Walk ever, which took place at the same Long Beach Convention Center where the con was located, I'm also looking forward to the upcoming weekend, where I will see 'Elvira' for the 'last time' in costume.    This will take place at the 1st ever ComiKaze Expo at the Los Angeles Convention Center!  (NOTE: Here's the link to my Halloween of 2009 archived blog post on Elvira, "What's Halloween WITHOUT Elvira?!")

Okay... Enough of the 'commercials' for the cons!  Where's the comic book covers guaranteed to get YOU in the mood for Halloween??!!

Here's a few from the past... The recent past, and the far far away past for several of you readers out there!  I'm including Silly Comic Book Covers... Fun Comic Book Covers for the special day, and then lastly... Downright SCARY Comic Books Covers!  Enjoy!

Hey!  Just like I said... Silly, Fun & then Downright Scary Comic Book Covers!  LOL!

Happy Halloween to all of You!

TODAY'S FEATURE - Blog #3536:

Back in blog #3516, I mentioned that I was looking forward to attending a comic con in the Long Beach area of the Los Angeles Metro Area...

That would be the Long Beach Comic Con, which added the 'Horror' word to its name this year, as once again it occured during the Halloween Season!

I'm not going to repeat here what I said in the earlier blog post for the most part, other than the links I believe you would be interested in.

This 2011 LBCC is now the third of the three of the weekend cons that the LBCC has hosted. There has also been two one day expos, which I have had the pleasure of also attending!

Here are just a few photos from the earlier cons, as uploaded at my Facebook Fan Page, Michael D Hamersky On Comics:

2009 LBCC

2010 LBCC 1 Day Expo

2010 LBCC

2011 LBCC 1 Day Expo

2011 LBC&HC

I will be adding more photos to the 2011 LBCC&HC photo album in the next four hours, and in the days to follow.  Tina took over 200 photos and I took over 200 photos from our one day there, (Saturday).  Plus I have videos to share from this con, which will be posted both at my YouTube Channel as well as the Facebook Fan Page.

Plus here are the links for you to check out to match up with the photos and videos that I will be presenting at my Facebook Fan Page, as these links have links to the exhibitors, panelists, and Artist Alley participants:

The 2011 Scheduled Guests

The 2011 Artist Alley Tables

The 2011 Exhibitors

The 2011 Programming Schedule Including 1st time Masquerade Ball

Oh, and so you can see what everyone else is saying or has alreday said about this year's Long Beach Comic & Horrr Con... Here's the Facebook Fan Page for the LBCC, so that you can be interactive with the promoters / attendees for this year's Con!

So... With All that out of the way... What was 'My Take' on this year's con?!

First, Tina had a book launch that has to be finalized for this upcoming week, so we just made plans to arrive early and stay as long as we could yesterday... Which turned out to be from 9:30 AM to 9:30 PM, so we saw quite a bit during those 12 hours!

Here's my immediate topics and my thoughts:

Parking:  Totally blown away by the numbers of cars we saw in line before it was even 9:30 AM! We arrived at 9:20 AM, hoping to make it inside the underground parking facility at the Long Beach Convention Center!  We did, which was great, as the parking was only $10 and we had access to our car whenever we needed it!

Registration:  If the numbers of cars was any indication of what we would find upstairs in the convention center itself... Well we were blown away by the long line to get the badges to get in!   We were going to pick up our Press Badges at the Professional Counter, but stopped to take pics of the line, and that everyone at that time was in a good mood, and ready to take on the con in half an hour.  My understanding later, when inside, was the line had grown even longer, and reached the corner of the block on the outside.  This was the most persons arriving early at this con ever in its three years of operating, and the staff had to add on additional computers to handle the overflow of those wanting to get in, and had not purchased online badges!

Opening Day Ceremony:  (Pictured above and with a video to be uploaded!) Tom Pinchuk once again provided the welcoming message, and a good job in doing so once again!

Exhibit Hall:  The Entrance was the same as the previous year, but the con's promoters had listened to the advice given last year, and made several improvements on where to stage certain events, etc.  The layout design of where Artists Alley was placed was better also!

Panels:  Yeah!  All the panels were on the same floor as the exhibit hall!   And we didn't have to go around the building to get to them like last year!  Vast improvement!   Of the 12 hours we were at the convention, we spent almost 4 hours at 4 different panels.  Great selection of topics for me!

Events:  The 1st ever Masquerade was fine for a first time event at this con.  Tina refuses to stand in line for tickets to get into the main hall for the San Deigo Comic Con Masquerade, and I just don't get the same feeling as attending it when seeing it in adjacent hall with the video piped in!  Here at the Long Beach Comic Con... We walked in a half hour before starting time, and had front row seats!  We'll be sharing photos and videos in the days to follow.  Plus for a 1st time event... It had 17 entries!  Not bad at all!  Plus, those that were there, had fun!

Artists Alley:  There were so many people to see, both Facebook Friends and newbies (to me!) at this show, that I didn't get to see everyone one on one this time.  I knew we just had the one day, but there were four really goood panels I wanted to attend as well.  My apologies to those we didn't get time to talk with!  And yes, there were many artists there, from comics, fantasy, sci-fi, anime, etc.  This is a great section to check out!

Exhibitors: The way the floor design is set up... You had to walk by and through the front wave of booths that were held by the exhibitors.  We spent a little bit of time checking some of them out... But since I wasn't there to buy from other dealers or comics publishers... I walked by the comic dealers, waving to those I knew, and glancing at the comics publishers wares that were displayed.   For those that were there for this activity, there appeared to be ample supply of dealers and exhibitors to choose from.

Other Activities:  Films -  There were films, but after an hour and a half drive up for us from the San Diego area... I'm not going to take in a film.  Plus the majority of the films were horror films, which Tina normally doesn't take in at the Big Screen.  So we didn't check this out.

After Exhibit Hall Closed Activities:  Although not officially part of the Long Beach Comic & Horror Con... The 2011 Zombie Walk at the Long Beach Convention Center was a massive undertaking!  There was talk of the Zombie Walk's promoters going for the record of the most Zombies ever!  And trust Tina... She believes they were darn close, if not setting a new record!   We were coming back from dinner and upon the elevator door opening... Were shocked at the crowd size! We had come to finish the con's activities of a concert and the Masquerade. The concert was not set up, and with the crowd outside, I believe that took some of the con's attendees attention. However, the Masquerade although small in number of attendees at first, ended up with about 40% of the room filled. Tina enjoyed herself at this Masquerade, and believe me... She is tough on Masquerades that are held!

Well... That's it for the written word on the 2011 LBCC. For visual sights and sounds... Be sure to check the links to the photo album and the YouTube Channel videos via my Facebook Fan Page shown above!

My thanks again to Martha Donato, Phil Lawrence, Mike Scigliano, and Drew Seldin for presenting once again such a smooth & FUN comic con!

We will definitely be looking forward to the 2012 one day LBCC Expo in the Spring, and then the weekend con in November of 2012!

TODAY'S FEATURE - Blog #3535:

This upcoming Nuke The Fridge Con is really coming up with guest stars to feature!

I previously posted in blog #3529 who was going to be there as guests... But on the way out Saturday night of the 2011 Long Beach Comic Con, Promoter Louis Love let me in on an Exclusive who else would be attending as a guest!

None other than 'The Silver Surfer' himself, Doug Jones!

So this will defintely be a 'MARVEL-ous Comic Con' to attend, as the others pictured above are all Stars who have played Marvel Comics Characters either on TV or on the Big Screen!

So my thanks to Louis Love for this Exclusive!  We were going to be there anyways as Tina and I are going to be setting up a comic books dealer table at this comic con as well, but now it is truly a 'MARVEL-ous' Team-Up!

Plus, although it is a different 'comic book universe', I'll be selling AND signing copies of 'my' new book, 'GOTHAM CITY 14 MILES', of which I'll have a dozen copies coming in time for this event.  With only a dozen copies of the book available there... If YOU want a signed copy, be sure to stop by my table as you get in!  Of course, if you have already bought the book elsewhere, I'd be glad to personally sign it for you as well!

Yeah I know... I mentioned earlier that I haven't set up at a con for many years, but after Tina and my youngest son got a kick out of setting up in August when invited to do so at another con... Tina and I are doing it again... This time at the 2011 NukeTheFridge.com Con!

And... If I can break away from our table long enough to do so... I for one want to sell hello again to several of the guest stars at this 1 day event!  As you can see from several of the pics above, I've already had the pleasure of meeting them and having my pic taken with them!

My thanks again to Louis Love, of NuketheFridge.com, for telling me the EXCLUSIVE News about who else will be at this con!

Well, that's it for announcing this con... Except for posting the links YOU should check out:

Facebook Fan Page for NukeTheFridge.com

Tina and I hope to see you there!  Feel free to stop by and say hello at any time! We will be there before the opening at 8:30 all set up, and staying till closing time at 5PM.

Which reminds me... Here's the event info once more:

Time:  Saturday, December 10 · 8:30 AM - 5 PM

Location: Frank and Son Collectible Show 19649 San Jose Ave. Industry, CA

With FREE admission AND FREE parking!  Wotta Deal!

~Oh, and if you are reading this on Sunday, October 30th... The Long Beach Comic & Horror Con is still happening this weekend, as it ends today in Long Beach, California!  Stop by and see Louis Love at Booth #901  which is on the way in & out of the main entrance to the LBCC!
