Guide to Business Gift-Giving

by Tina LoSasso

Anyone braving the shopping malls during the holiday season knows that finding the perfect gift for family or friends is not easy.

Business gift-giving can be even more challenging. Choosing the right business gift requires more time and thoughtfulness. How do you go about selecting exactly the right gift for that important client?  Here is another of time-honored rules of thumb from the new sales advice book, Top Dog Sales Secrets.

• Beware of booze.

Alcoholic beverages are usually risky business.

The one exception is when you know someone loves a certain brand of Scotch, a particular bottle of wine, or a regional microbrew.

Never send a bottle of champagne to that key account in Salt Lake City or for that matter, frozen steaks to a customer who is vegetarian.

Don’t laugh—it happens!

The above is from Tina's new book that is titled: 'Top Dog Sales Secrets' and we now have a few more copies listed for sale in our eBay Featured Store!

We've made it easy for you eBayers to buy this newly published book. Just click on the book cover at the top left to buy a copy with the 'Buy It Now' feature!

...BEFORE The Doors Even Open!

We received the Comic Con Update #3 a few weeks ago and on the inside splash page was an 'Open Letter' to all interested parties.

'Online Registration Is Open Now!'

Because of that, the San Diego Comic Con International expects to SELL OUT of all memberships - 4 day and 1 day memberships -PRIOR to Comic Con even opening its' doors on July 24th of 2008!

Since Opening Day is my birthday, Tina has already bought me my birthday present of a 4 day membeship, (plus hers of course... she's Not going to miss the Hollywood programs)!

If YOU even think of maybe attending next summer, NOW is the time to put those thoughts into action and make the committment to purchase.

No, I'm not an 'employee' or even a 'volunteer' for the con, but I do remember seeing many disappointed people being turned away last year when individual days sold out early!

This is the ONE Comic Book Con You have to attend at least once in your lifetime!

Is Your Comic Book Truly Rare?
Mood:  quizzical
Topic: Comic Book History

Click here to see all of our current listings!

A comic book may be truly 'rare', but if there is no demand for it... then the value of the comic book does not increase just because it is rare!

Additionally, there are several collectors who collect by topic... ie dinosaurs on comic book cover, bondage covers, favorite artist covers, etc etc.!

The above comic book is not 'rare', but because it has a cover and interior art work by Jack 'King' Kirby it is highly desirable in high grade and collectable.

Click here to see all of current comics and magazines listings!

Some collectors buy certain issues not because they are rare, but because the issue contains the first appearance of a villain.... like the above issue of Fantastic Four #5, the FIRST appearance of Dr Doom!

This is considered a 'Key' Issue as Dr Doom has gone on to be the FF's primary villain in the 46 years of the title's published works!

Is 'My' Comic Book Truly Rare?!

We have been asked again about 'rare' comic books and who / what decides a comic is rare?

We ran a blog post over a year ago about this subject, so am updating it in this blog post today!

So often you will see the word 'rare' in an eBay listing for a comic book. It is often an overused word in describing the listing.

How does one figure out if the comic book is truly 'rare'??

Back in 1990, Ernie Gerber published two volumes of his 'Photo Journal Guide to Comics'.  He later added two additional volumes just for Mavel Comics.

In those volumes he rated comics in regards to his research on rarity.  Please remember this is before the advent of mainstream use of the internet, and before internet auction sites like eBay came into existence.

This is the top of the 'rarity' scale per Gerber on a numerical number value:

#11      No copies known, but they are suspected to exist

#10      1 to 5 copies believed to exist

# 9     estimated 6 to 10 copies

#8      estimated 11 to 20 copies

# 7     estimated 21 to 50 copies

# 6     estimated 51 to 200 copies

# 5    estimated 201 to 1000 copies

Each listing in the Gerber books comes with its' own rarity number value.

Additionally, private companies like CGC have begun tracking comics in their own census. This only takes into account the books that have been submitted to CGC for grading, although they recently hit the 1,000,000 mark in graded comics!

Even though Gerber's books were printed in the early 1990's, most comic experts think that what Gerber has in his books are probably still a good estimate today.

There are copies of these Photo Journals for sale in eBay listings at times, and they are a good reference for the comic book investor, or those collectors that don't want to overpay for what is not a true 'rare' comic book.

(This is a repost of a popular archived blog post for those of you who haved missed it!)

You May Be Thinking... What Do You Mean That I Haven't Seen the First Fantastic Four Movie ???

The first live action Fantastic Four Movie was never shown in theaters after it was produced in 1994 by Roger Corman.

Roger quickly finished the film as his rights to the FF were running out...

I met three of the four actors who portrayed the FF at the 1994 San Diego Comic Con. They were sincere in their portrayals of the FF and I really enjoyed meeting them and having my pic taken with them!

However, the movie wasn't to be released, and upon purchasing a bootleg video at a later comic con, I realized why....  It was really bad,  terrible actually what had happened to my favorite comic book superheroes.

It wasn't until ten years later at the SDCC in 2004 that I saw the new actors who had just been signed to play in the new film have a program at the SDCC, and they were introduced to the con goers.

I thought the choice for Mr Fantastic, and the Thing were great. I thought the choice for the Invisible Woman was all wrong... she was too sexy to portray Sue Storm.  And I couldn't figure out the actor that would portray the Torch.

The capper to the program was the choice of director.... and what he had directed before...  oh no I thought, not another upcoming clunker movie of my FF !!!

Well I was wrong... the 2005 movie was a lot better than I expected, better than I hoped it could be.... and I came away a lot happier!!!

I looked forward to the second installment, 'The Rise of the Silver Surfer' for the Summer of 2007!

But I still thought Jessica Alba was too young and sexy for the Invisible Woman role !!

For those interested in Fantastic Four comics on which the movies are based on, we have several listed in our eBay Featured Store.

What A Tag Line...                          'The Mysterious Beauty'!

I don't see anything mysterious about her, as she doesn't cover her face with a disguise, she wears bright yellow clothes, and she is operating in the day time!

Guess they just didn't know what her tag line should be back then, but 'The Mysterious Beauty' just doesn't fit, IMHO !

Sun Girl?

Yes, Because She Was So 'Hot'...

That Her Publishers Gave Her A Comic Book Of Her Own!

Even thought she only lasted 3 Issues in her comic book series, her back issues are 'Hot'!

Her first issue was in August of 1948, and #3 was cover dated December 1948.

However, Her comic book pictured to the top left is worth $1,000 in Near Mint grade today! (Original cover price 10 cents!)

We don't have any Sun Girl Comics but we do have hundreds of comics in our eBay Featured Store! Just click on the top left comic book cover to view them.....
