Getting Ready For A

 Transformation!

That Would Be The San Diego Convention Center!

Yesterday morning Tina and I went past Downtown San Diego on the way to my folks to 'farm out' our bird as we did not want him to stay home by himself while we attended the upcoming Comic Con International.

As we were learned a few years ago, it is best to preview our travel route to the San Diego Convention Center a few days before the start of the Con as sometimes the route is being worked on by the street department which would cause us delays to getting there early to find underground parking before that is filled to capacity!

One of the worst things about the Comic Con, and there are very bad things about it, is that we are among the 125,000 other attendees that possibly need to find parking!

We've already checked to make sure the San Diego Padres DO NOT have a day game at the Ballpark next door, as a couple of years ago all the baseball fans had taken up all the parking in the immediate area for their ballgame!  It was NO fun lugging a 'long box' of comics to the far parking, even though it was a fantastic 'flip deal' we made that very first day!

We are sharing some photos just taken yesterday morning in this blog post in the right column.

The San Diego Convention Center has two 'wings' which still isn't enough room to get all the people that want to get in to the Comic Con! You can tell from the photos that it is a large 2 1/2 story building and runs Eastward a loooong ways!

There isn't enough parking at the SD Convention Center, but for out of townies the Comic Con shuttle bus works wonders by going to many major hotels surrounding the area.

Talking about room, the exhibit hall(s) feature 525,701 sq ft of room! It is almost like Disneyland in that you really can't see it all in one day anymore!

That square footage number does not take in the giant halls for programs or the other large rooms for smaller programs.

The San Diego Comic Con International convention is now the largest convention held at the SD Convention Center. That title used to be held by 'AA'!

As for the last photo on the right, Tina and I saw 'The Dark Knight' Film Friday, so this weekend I'm going around in different Batman T-Shirts as seen in the last photo!

BTW, we also have an ongoing Comic Con  and Pop Culture convention here at Make It So Marketing, what with our daily blog posts and listings of items for sale!

Thanks for reading this post today and please join us again as we blog about the 2008 Comic Con before it starts and after we get back!

This photo doesn't do it justice... but this is the far East end of the Convention Center. You can't see the far west start of the center, but it is a hike that Tina and I take multiple times during the  4 1/2 day Comic Con!

As you can tell, Michael just can't wait for the Comic Con to open!  This was shot at the Convention Center the night after the Batman Film, 'The Dark Knight' opened!

The Annual Jack Kirby Tribute Program 2008
Mood:  a-ok
Topic: Comic Cons

This Is A 'Must See' Program For Me...

The Annual Jack Kirby Tribute Program

At The 2008 SDCC  Comic Con International!

As our regular blog readers know from our previous archived blog posts... I consider Jack Kirby and Stan Lee  the two main reasons that I started 'collecting' comics to begin with back in the early 1960's!

I had been reading comics since the late 1950's but it wasn't until Journey Into Mystery #72 by Jack Kirby and Stan Lee  that I became a collector of comic books!

Thus my annual pilgrimage to the San Diego Comic Con International is not 'completed' until I attend the Annual Jack Kirby Tribute Program!

Jack passed away in 1994... but Mark Evanier started and continues the tradition of holding an 'Annual Jack Kirby Tribute' Program at each year's Con.

Here is the program note for this special Tribute Program that is being held the final day of this year's Comic Con, Sunday July 27th 2008:

10:00-11:00 Jack Kirby Tribute— As we do every year, friend and family of the great Jack Kirby to remember the man some call The King. Participating this year are animation producers Joe Ruby and Ken Spears, Marvel writer-artist Larry Lieber, and comic book legend Jerry Robinson.  And it's all hosted by—who else?—Mark Evanier, author of the recent book, Kirby: King of Comics. Room 7AB.

I don't miss each year's special tribute program.... period.  I don't care what else is scheduled against it! Mark always has interesting guests and they have Great Stories about their experiences with the 'King of Comics' Jack Kirby!

Take a look at who joined Mark at last year's Kirby Tribute Program at the top right of this blog! Just one of several special guests that year!

Here at Make It So Marketing we also have an ongoing Comic Con  and Pop Culture convention, what with our daily blog posts and listings of items for sale!

Thanks for reading this post today and please join us again!

Erik Larsen also attended the SDCC Comic Con International 2007 Jack Kirby Tribute Program, and is pictured at the top left. Erik is known for several creations including The Savage Dragon. He is also known for his Amazing Spider-Man art in that title's run.

Darwyn Cooke is pictured at the top right. Some of his work includes art and or stories on The Spirit, Batman, Green Lantern, Wolverine, Catwoman among other works...

The Lull Before The Storm....

The Lull Before The Storm....

In Downtown San Diego!

Yesterday morning Tina and I went past Downtown San Diego on the way to my folks to 'farm out' our bird as we did not want him to stay home by himself while we attended the upcoming Comic Con  International.

As we were learned a few years ago, it is best to preview our travel route to the San Diego Convention Center a few days before the start of the Con as sometimes the route is being worked on by the street department which would cause us delays to getting there early to achieve underground parking before that is filled to capacity!

One of the worst things about the Comic Con, and there are very bad things about it, is that we are among the 125,000 other attendees that possibly need to find parking!

The Comic Con itself has a great shuttle system between hotels to the Convention Center! When I used to live in Downtown San Diego, that would be my choice of transportation if I wasn't planning to buy a lot to resale that day and had mostly programs to attend.

Tina and I arrive there early each morning to get one of the few underground spaces that is available to the general public.

Then we wait in line to get in each morning for that day's programs and exhibit hall hours.

So this year we stopped to check out the route, saw that the street banners were already in place and shot a few photos to share with you!

The first photo at the top right is shown looking East on Broadway after coming South on Pacific Coast Highway.

Each year the City of San Diego places banners up 'Celebrating The Popular Arts', as the Comic Con is a lot more than just about comics!

The 2nd photo in the right column shows the emphasis on the upcoming Star Trek Film, which a lot of mainstream viewers wouldn't recognize except for the small 'Star Trek' letters in white at the bottom left corner of the left side of the banners.

Thus the 'Lull Before The Storm' of con-goers that swarm into the City of San Diego!  The Gaslamp District is definitely to be avoided this upcoming week due to the 125,000+ expected attendees and guests!

BTW, we also have an ongoing Comic Con  and Pop Culture convention here at Make It So Marketing, what with our daily blog posts and listings of items for sale!

Thanks for reading this post today and please join us again as we blog about the 2008 Comic Con before it starts and after we get back!

"Planetary" Or "Planet Terry"?
Mood:  quizzical
Topic: Comic Book History

"Planetary" Or

"Planet Terry"?

I have blogged before about the fact that young children are just not reading comics like they used to. After seeing comic book movies like 'The Dark Knight' last night, I can see why some parents would be concerned to have their younger children reading comics that the film is based on...

There has been several attempts in the 'Modern Age' of Comics to correct that status.

'Planet Terry' was an one of those attempts in the 1980's.

It was published by Star Comics, which was an "imprint' of Marvel Comics.

Planet Terry actually lasted 12 issues, from April 1985 to March 1986, in conjunction with being published with other 'Star Comics'.

This title was authored by Lenni  Herman, who was the writer of fellow Star Comics books Top Dog and Royal Roy.

Planet Terry was illustrated by artist Warren Kremer, who had previously worked for Harvey Comics.

'Planet Terry' was a pun on the word "planetary", meaning of or relating to planets!

Terry was a teenager, who was on a quest to find his parents. They were officers on the spaceship 'Star Warp'.

The parents had accidentally launched him off the space craft!

So Terry, along with a robot named Robota, and a yellow-skinned alien named Omnus, went searching the galaxy for his parents.

Unfortunately, Planet Terry's story was never fully resolved before it's cancellation!

However, it is a good title to introduce young children to comics with. We currently have most of the 12 issues, and are listing them for sale in our eBay Featured Store.

For those that are new to us.... We have an ongoing Comic Con  and pop culture convention here at Make It So Marketing, what with our daily blog posts and listings of items for sale!
