TODAY'S FEATURE:

Allright... I've been getting quite a bit of emails and messages about when I'm going to be publishing more of the 'finds' that Tina and I found at the recent Long Beach Comic Con Expo!

Believe it or not, I haven't run out of features to run here about that one day con in my blog!

And this 'find'... Well, You've got to see it to believe it!

It's kind of cute and kind of risque... not over the top like the Feature from this past Saturday's blog, yet in a similar vein, but lighter in tone.

What is it you say?  Well, first... Make sure you take a look at the photo of the Pirate, the Turtle, and Me at the top right of this post...Yeah, I said Pirate, Turtle and Me!

That's because the two costumed characters above are from:

http://www.supapiratebootyhunt.com/

Huh?  Well... You gotta take a look at the portal page of their web site to figure it out!

Plus there are several of the cartoons already up for your viewing pleasure!

I met Daniel the Turtle, (a.k.a. Steven Sievers) at the LBCC Expo, along with Dahveed.  Tina kind of surprised them by thinking and saying out loud that the Pirate's Hat looked like a Survivor TV Show Hidden Immunity Idol!

Hey!  She meant it as a compliment, guys!  ;)

Here, this is what the cartoon show is all about in their own blurbs:

"Supa Pirate Booty Hunt is a new animated show created by Steve Sievers of Level 27 Clothing & Dahveed of Smorgasbordproductions.com.

It's sex, drugs and rock 'n roll all on the high seas! Supa Pirate Booty Hunt is a cartoon intended for a hip, young adult audience. It has no nudity but adult humor and implied sexual situations. It is a hip late night show with a style similar to Adult Swim shows such as Venture Brothers and Aqua Teen Hunger Force.

The show combines classic slapstick squash and stretch Looney Tunes style animation with great action adventure story arches and hilarious comedy. The show spoofs current events, celebrities and the media while being set in a world of ancient magic and futuristic technology."

Steven has placed a few of the cartoon videos on my Facebook Pages since the LBCC as a reminder for me to blog about it...

Okay, Okay, enuff already!  Here's the mention!  ;)

Anyways, this is a pretty good cartoon show and I think you should give it a look / listen.

They also have a Facebook Fan Page that YOU can be interactive with them at:   "Supa Pirate Booty Hunt".

Oh, and for those that of YOU that would like to attend the NEXT Long Beach Comic Con... check out their Facebook Fan Page by clicking here!

My thanks to Steven for reminding me about their works, and to Tina LoSasso who once again took a great photo at the LBCC!

AND...My thanks again to all of YOU reading this blog and our archived blog posts, now almost 3,100 in number!!

TODAY'S FEATURE:

This is the SECOND in a series of THREE Clases on this subject:

MASTER CLASS SERIES IN COMICS WRITING - You know... I am really impressed with what MoCCA offers to their members at a discounted rate, and even to non-members for just a little more!

Makes me wish we lived or could commute easily to NYC just to attend the programs and workshops that are sponsored by this organization!

Anyways here's the scoop on what this Master Class Series in Comics Writing per the invite I received:

Type: Education - Workshop
Start Time: Tuesday, March 16, 2010 at 6:30pm
End Time: Tuesday, April 13, 2010 at 8:30pm
Location: Museum of Comic and Cartoon Art - MoCCA

The Museum of Comic and Cartoon Art – MoCCA is proud to announce the spring offerings from its Education Department. Organized and headed by Senior Vice-President of Education, DANNY FINGEROTH, the season’s initial offering will be:

MASTER CLASS SERIES IN COMICS WRITING
3 sessions, TUESDAYS, March 16 & 23; April 13, 6:30-8:30 pm

March 16: CHRIS CLAREMONT

March 23: TOM DeFALCO

April 13: DENNIS O’NEIL

Series Cost: $100 | $90 for MoCCA members
Individual sessions: $40 | $35 for MoCCA members

CHRIS CLAREMONT, TOM DeFALCO, AND DENNIS O’NEIL will each hold a master class session in comics writing. These three extraordinarily accomplished writers have written some of the highest profile and most acclaimed comics of all time, with bodies of work that have played significant parts in defining the modern versions of The X-Men (Claremont), Spider-Man (DeFalco), and Batman (O’Neil). Each of them will condense the most important things they know about writing into highly-concentrated (and entertaining!) lecture form. This is a rare opportunity to hear these top names in the field speak about what makes for great comics writing.

Here is a bit more on Tom DeFalco who is hosting the 2nd class on March 23rd:

TOM DeFALCO, a former editor-in-chief of Marvel Comics with over thirty books currently in print, has written comic books, graphic novels, short stories, prose novels and books like Spider-Man: The Ultimate Guide and Comic Creators on Fantastic Four. He was also a major contributor to The Marvel Encyclopedia and The Marvel Chronology. DeFalco has recently worked on Star Wars: The Clone Wars for Titan Comics, The Man From RIVERDALE for Archie Comics, Flash Gordon for Ardden Entertainment, The Flying Fool for Moonstone Books, The Super Seven for Stan Lee Comics and, of course, The Spectacular Spider-Girl for Marvel Comics.

MoCCA Education Programs: All classes are held at MoCCA, except where otherwise noted.

To register for a class, please call 212-254-3511, Tuesday through Fridays, 1AM to 5 PM.

However you can see what else this event is about by checking out further the link shown below:

A Review On: The H-Boyz #1

TODAY'S FEATURE:

This is a review on 'The H-Boyz' #1 from Graphic Artists Inc....

My thanks to Clay Henss, (a.k.a. Clay Hatrison), who sent this in for a possible mention / review in my blog...

So what's this H-Boyz all about?

First, I must place a 'Disclaimer / Warning' on this blog post of mine!  Similar to what Clay and Blake Hatrison posted on the cover of the comic book itself.

That would be:  "Adult Content" & "Viewers Discrection Advised".

Why?  Well right on the cover itself, at the bottom, is the promo: "Introducing the New Lords of the Underground... The H-Boyz!".

And that is exactly what this comic book reminds me of, comics from the late 1960's - early 1970's that I'm currently selling a collection of in our own online store! (Unabashed plug here, LOL!)

Let me say this, though.  When and IF You go to their web site, Clay (Demonchild) and Blake (B-Boy) want to be in Your face, daring you to read further!

They'll throw a lot of 'bad words' at you and other phrases to introduce you to their publication.  They want to be known as the "nefarious duo known as the H-Boyz".

Here's a comment from them about what they are doing with this comic: "The H-Boys represent a new era in underground comix, hateful music and the proliferation of the dont-give-a-___, DIY aesthetic. We are the new overlords of the underground, and we command you to kneel before your death rock gods".

Due to the 'standards' my blogging host server has, I shouldn't list the titles of the short illustrated stories in their comic book here in this post.

I did note that both of them contributed artwork for the comic that is supposed to "act as an autobiography of our heinous exploits".

Well, so far their efforts to secure a publisher "brave enough" to bring their work into print and mass produced form has been "fruitless", to use their own word for it.

Well, there's a reason for this guys!

This comic ain't for the masses!

That's why there is the 'self-publishing' route to go to.  And You are going to have to market / market / market it yourselves to get your work known!

In all seriousness, the art ain't half-bad.  Matter of fact it is pretty darn good.  The situations that they place themselves in is 'typical' for an underground comix.

Nothing really new there for those that have read underground comix for years... but it would definitely be new and loud for those that hadn't read underground comix before!

But this genre is NOT for everyone!  Heck, it is probably a really limited niche to begin with... And with the 'In Your Face' attitude in print, it just might turn off the readers you want to attract.  Then again... it might not...it could be a niche within a niche sales market.

As I have mentioned in another review I posted on another underground style comix, (that of Iota Arcane's Imaginary Slave),  this series also had a CD with music tracks.  Unfortunately the CD itself is 'Sold Out' per their web site 'store' tab.

So what's my final thoughts on this...?

If You are into underground comix, then you should give it a try. Please note that is NOT for underage readers, PERIOD. There is some commercial value to this comix, but you can't be upset at the language and situations mentioned in this comix.  You have definitely been warned!

This is NOT a 'mainstream' comic book, and is NOT meant for everyone... And this could, (probably?), mean YOU!

You too can  view a few 'censored' pages of it, and even order it at your own mind-rotting peril at:

http://malignantstrain.com/hcomix.html

My thanks to Clay for bringing this publication to my attention.

AND...My thanks again to all of YOU reading this blog and our archived blog posts!

TONIGHT'S 'MAIN FEATURE':

Just a little while ago, Tina and I were having dinner and catching up with the evening news in between our conversation...

Tina suddenly brought to my attention that the scrolling headline at the bottom of the screen seemed to point out something about Fess Parker.  It was an announcement of his passing, at the age of 85 years old...

Thus I wanted to change what I was going to do tonight by first blogging about Fess Parker.

You see, we had the honor of meeting Fess Parker back in 2003 when we visited his bed and breakfast inn.  (As seen in the above photo.)

I had grown up watching the multiple shows on Walt Disney's programs about Davy Crockett, and yeah, I had a coonskin cap too.

So I was very pleased to meet and talk with him, especially after we had just had a fantastic dinner at his restaurant.

Fess was perfect for the 'hospitality' business in his later life. He took control of the conversation, made sure we were more than happy at his bed and breakfast, and was pleased about our choices of entrees and wine at his restaurant.  Of course I mentioned our visit at his winery earlier that very day.

That meeting with Fess Parker confirmed to me what a gentleman he was, and that my 'hero worship' of him when I was a child was justified.

It was good to see those qualities in this man who had portrayed such a striking hero on TV during my early childhood.

He will be missed...

My condolences to his family, and to his many friends and employees at his different operations.

My thanks to my wife, Tina, for bringing this to my attention tonight. She's already posted a notice on her Facebook member wall, as she was very impressed with Fess Parker also...

SEEDS - An Anthology Of Comics About Food...?!

Click Here to see our HoRRoR and MoNSTer COMICS listings!

TODAY'S 'MAIN FEATURE':

This is a review on 'SEEDS' - An Anthology Of Comics About Food...

Matt Levin, about whom I blogged about HERE, sent me this publication for possible mention / review in my Blog.

So, what's this publication about? I grabbed this excerpt from the Trees and Hills Comics Group Web Site:

"Seeds - by Adam Kaiser, Anne Thalheimer, Blake Parker, Colin Tedford, Colleen Frakes, Dan Archer, Daniel Barlow, E.J. Barnes, Jesse DuRona, Keith Moriarty, Marek Bennett, Matt Levin, Matt Sundstrom, Max Lewis, Mike Lynch, Mischa Rich, RF, Sam Leveillee, Star Chickaderis.

The new Trees & Hills anthology contains comics about FOOD with an emphasis on its social aspects. It comes with a booklet of cartoonists’ favorite recipes and a packet of organic lettuce seeds from a Vermont farm, and the whole package is wrapped in an apple-stamped cover (the apples, of course, were organic heirloom varieties from a VT farmer’s market…).

How cool is that? Get it now, nourish your mind, and prepare yourself for the planting season!"

Okay... that's definitely a different type of publication, but you know what?

It was a FUN READ! Why?

Because it had so many different stories in it, that several were very interesting to me! The others, like all anthologies that are sent to me for possible review, were of varying levels of interest to me personally.

Some of the features that really jumped out at me were:

The Introduction: 'Truth In the Dirt' - a text peice by Daniel Barlow

'The Sugar Tree' by Matthew Sundstrom

'Apple Rant' by Colin Tedford

'Food Chain' by Daniel Barlow, Keith Moriarty and Matthew Reidsma

'Seeds Part 2': Attack' by Marek Bennett

'Food' by Matt Levin

This is definitely a 'message' publication, but whether or not you 'get the message' or even care for the 'message', there is also entertainment value in it.

PLUS: There is a packet of 'Seeds' for YOU to grow!  Now that's different! No 'variant covers' here!  LOL

For more info on this publication and others that Trees and Hills sells, please see their web site at:

http://www.treesandhills.org

My thanks to Matt Levin for bringing this publication to my attention!

AND...My thanks again to all of YOU reading this blog and our archived blog posts!

TODAY'S FEATURETTE:

Okay.. it definitely is the con season...AND I don't mean just comic con season!

I was sent an 'invite' to attend this event via the social network I mainly subscribe to, that of Facebook.

Here are the actual dates, times, and the link to where YOU can 'attend' the event:

Start Time:  Friday, March 26, 2010 at 11:00pm
End Time:    Sunday, March 28, 2010 at 5:00pm
Location: George R. Brown Convention Center 3rd Floor
Street:   1001 Avenida de las Americas
City/Town:   Houston, TX

The following are just a few of those that will be attending this convention AND whom I would want to see for sure:

"From his first film, The Cliffdwellers, which was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Short Subject Film in 1962, to the multi-award winning movie Slingblade, James Hampton’s career as an actor, writer and director spans over 40 years. Along the way, he has been nominated for a Golden Globe for his role as Caretaker in the original version of The Longest Yard and has starred in such memorable films as Teen Wolf, China Syndrome, Hawmps! and Pump Up the Volume. On television, James was the tone-deaf bugler Hannibal Dobbs on the classic ‘60s sitcom F Troop and appeared in hundreds of TV show favorites like The Bob Newhart Show and Gunsmoke. James also worked as a writer/producer/director on Evening Shade and worked as a director on numerous successful sitcoms such as Grace Under Fire."

"Actress Tracy Scoggins might have gotten her start as a gymnast and a supermodel, but she is best known to sci-fi fans the world over as Captain Elizabeth Lochley on TV’s Babylon 5 and its various spinoffs. But Tracy has also appeared on such cult favorites as Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman, The A-Team, Dynasty, Nip/Tuck, Highlander and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. She has also employed her athletic abilities to produce and star in motivational workout videos. Whether she’s kicking alien butt in space or kicking your butt through exercise here on Earth, the gorgeous Tracy Scoggins is always a joy to behold."

"Dirk Strangely is an artist in the truest sense. Drawing upon his taste for the bizarre, Dirk creates macabre reveries in many media. Whether painting, writing, creating music or making films, Dirk’s singular vision is indeed disturbingly beautiful. His work has been displayed at conventions, private shows and galleries. He has been published in magazines and newspapers as well."

And yeah, there are others that will be there... but this is the limited amount of space 'Featurette' section, NOT the 'Main Feature' today, LOL!

My thanks to the folks at Angel Comics who sent me the Facebook Event Invite!  I have previously blogged about them at:

https://makeitsomarketing.tripod.com/popularcultureblog/index.blog?entry_id=1997016

If YOU are attending this convention, be sure to stop in and see them at their booth at this convention!
