TODAY'S FEATURE - Blog #3320:

Tina and I are still suffering from bad colds that we picked up during our Holidays Vacation Trip to Las Vegas.

So I wanted to read something that would be both 'fun' and 'light' to read.  Which got me to pull out the TPB from Bongo Comics titled "Best Radioactive Man Event Ever".

This was given to me by the penciller, Tone Rodriquez, who I met once again at a comic con, this time at the 2010 Long Beach Comic Con, (LBCC), held during Halloween Weekend.

I've seen Tone several times in the past few years at comic cons, but haven't really seen much of his published work.  Whenever I've gone by his table, usually in the 'Artist Alley' of those cons, he is always with his head down, busy illustrating sketches for those that have commissioned him to draw for them.  So he's always a busy guy at those cons!

I mentioned that fact to Tone at the 2010 LBCC, and he asked me to come back on the last day of the con.  When I did, he handed me several of his earlier published works, which included this TPB. 

Of course I was interested about this TPB. I've mentioned before that I enjoyed the character Radioactive Man from Bongo Comics at my Facebook pages.

I was doubly pleased to see that Batton Lash, (also pictured at the top right column of this blog post), was the writer of all three stories.

So what did I find in this compilation of the three separate Bongo Issues?

Well... It wasn't that 'light' of reading!  This was a 96-page full color trade paperback, (TPB), which was limited to a print run of 1,000 copies for the 2009 Comic-Con International: San Diego. It reprinted the three-part 'Summer Crossover Event' that ran in 'Simpsons Comics' #155, 'Bart Simpson' #48, and 'Simpsons Super Spectacular' #9.

As I stated in the beginning of this blog, the story was written by Batton Lash, with pencils by Tone Rodriguez and inks by Andrew Pepoy, who I haven't mentioned here yet.

I found the storyline to be 'fantastic' in a 'great' way.  The story and dialogue were well written by Batton, with plenty of comic book 'insider' jokes to keep me laughing! Plus the spacing of the panels and the illustrations therein were portrayed very well by Tone, with inks by Andrew! Everything meshed smoothly and was a Great read!

I am so glad that these three issues, which I normally would not buy off the newstands, were compiled into this TPB.  This is what TPBs are for, in my opinion.  Three different titles, three different issues, with a 'Summer Crossover Event' spilling over into each title, collected for easier reading. 

Was it the 'Best Radioactive Man Event Ever'?!

Well, considering I'm thinking it's the 'only' one published so far, (but I'm not 100% sure on that!), the answer would have to be Yes!

But, I truly would say Yes anyways, because this 3 issue story arc confirms my belief that this sequential art format is one that is worth reading, no matter what the reader's age!

I would give this TBP the highest grade I award... A Near Mint (NM) 9.4 out of a possible 10.0 comic book grading scale.

Where do YOU get a copy of this 1,000 print run TPB?  Well... I've looked, and it would appear that this is a HTF (Hard To Find), Trade PaperBack!  So, I don't have a link to send you to; even the publisher doesn't seem to have it, and points to Amazon for back issues of its other TPBs.

TODAY'S FEATURE - Blog #3319:

Last year I blogged about Elvis Presley's birthdate the day after, (as seen here), as I was extremely busy, and the date just slipped by me before I realized that should have been my topic for tht day's blog.

This year, I'm recovering from a bad cold that I picked up on our Holidays Vacation to Las Vegas, so I'm a little less 'busy', and am blogging about his birthday on the 8th of January. 

Elvis Aaron Presley was born January 8th of 1935, so today would have been his 76th Birthday!  That I just can't fathom, as one of the last times I physically saw him was in concert at the Long Beach Convention Center in Long Beach California. 

I'm publishing a few of the photos from that concert at the top right of this blog post.  I also have the newspaper clippings, similar to the ones I posted in this blog post a while back, but not publishing them here today. That link I just provided was the last concert I saw Elvis at, on November 30th of 1976.

I've also posted many comic book covers that Elvis was pictured on since 1957, but I think the one that really stands out the most for me is the comic book cover shown at the top left of this blog, which was published by Charlton Comics for May of 1957!

I mentioned Las Vegas at the top of this blog... That we had just come back from there where we rang in the New Year on The Strip that was closed down for that purpose.

Well, I was also in Las Vegas during the period that Elvis was performing at the (International) / Hilton for what turned out to be his last series of concerts there, back in December 2nd through the 12th of 1976... WoW! 34 years ago now!

It was a last minute trip to Vegas, and unfortunately the days we were there the concerts were 'Sold Out'. And I had just seen him in a few days before in Anaheim.  So I thought... OK, so I couldn't see him this time in Vegas.  There will be a 'Next time' in Vegas or in SoCal in 1977... Well, You know, it never occured to me that Elvis, who had just turned 42 wouldn't live out the year of 1977.  It just didn't... And now, I'm older than the years he spent on this earth... I just can't picture him as 76, no matter how hard I try...

You know, I've seen performers live in concert, ranging from Rick Nelson, Little Richard, Diana Ross, The Whisperers, Paul Revere & the Raiders, Chuck Berry, Johnny Cash, Moody Blues, Led Zeppelin, to Black Sabbath even..., but Elvis was the one who ignited the whole concert hall the moment he stepped on stage. No one that I've ever seen live in concert held the adoration of so many, nor had the charisma that he had on stage. Period! 'Nuff Said!

Michael D Hamersky On Comics: The Secret History Book 13 - Twilight Of The Gods From Archaia Entertainment!     -

TODAY'S FEATURE - Blog #3318:

I recently blogged about Books Ten and Eleven in this Limited Series of comic books titled 'The Secret Story' from Archaia Entertainment.

Then my wife, Tina LoSasso, followed up with her thoughts about Book Twelve.

When both of us agree on a comic book series, then that is something I take note of, as we usually don't agree on each others' reading materials!

Book Thirteen came in while we were on vacation in Las Vegas and surrounding areas.  One of the points of interest we stopped at was the Atomic Testing Museum near The Strip in Las Vegas, as seen in this blog post...

As in the earlier issues of this series, I found myself fascinated with the historical aspects that were included in this current issue.  Including Trinity, the first bomb test in New Mexico before dropping one on Hiroshima.

This series is a really good one, and I eagerly await the Fourteenth book in this series!

If YOU aren't reading this series yet... I highly suggest that you do!  Especially if you like history with an 'occult bent'!

This issue is from the hit comic book first published in France.  It has been translated for English speaking audiences.  The Ark of the Covenant figures highly in this issue.  As well as other historical items, including the Normandy landings, and the opposition of the Mafia in Sicily during WWII.

TODAY'S FEATURE - Blog #3317:

Tina and I have both been suffering from colds that we picked up during our Las Vegas Holidays Vacation.

So I just went to the Post Office yesterday to pick up the 'vacation hold' mail that had accumulated while we were gone. 

There was a large USPS mail tub full of mail for our PO Box and home address.  Lots of mail, including a brown box from Illinois. 

After arriving home, I opened the box and found that it contained my 'authors copies' of 'Gotham City 14 Miles (GC14M), 'my' new book! (Along with 13 other authors, LOL!)

Even though I had read a .pdf review copy for my two review blogs, Part 1 & Part 2, it was Great to finally hold a 'hard copy' of the book in my hands! This morning I still have the cold, and not feeling too well... But the arrival of my authors copies in the mail sure made my day yesterday!

I want to once again thank my Editor, Jim Beard, for asking me to join him and the 12 others in writing an essay for this book back in April of 2009.  It was a fun ride, and definitely a great experience in seeing this project of Jim's arrive in print yesterday!

YOU can order this new book and see what I, plus the thirteen other authors have written.  For those of YOU that did the pre-order with your LCBS, Wednesday January 5th should have been the date that the Diamond Distributors should have had the books to the comic shops.

- From Las Vegas... The Pinball Hall of Fame! - (Top Photo:)  On New Year's Eve, Tina and I stayed closer to Las Vegas, and took in a few museums.  Would you believe there is a Pinball Hall of Fame in Vegas! - (At the Top Right:) One of the Indiana Jones pinball machines that we saw.   - (At the Second Right:) One of the Superman pinball machines found in this very large warehouse used as a museum! - (At the Third Right:)  Tina and I took turns playing Dunk 'n' Alien.  It was so much fun listening to this sassy alien berate us for not dunking him. Also included were Ted Nugent, and Guns 'n Roses! - (At the Fifth  Right:) Michael couldn't go pass the Elvira pinball machine without having a photo taken! - (At the Sixth Right Photo:) Of course, Tina couldn't go past the '24' TV Show pinball machine without doing the same!  - (At The Seventh Right:) Dr. Dude reminded me so much of an underground comix pinball machine with all of the comix artwork!  - (At the Eighth Right:) Yeah, there were several western themed pinball machines there also.  This one was called 'Lawman' which I had to play! - NOTE: You can see a larger view of the pics shown at the right, if you 'right click' on the above photos using the Firefox browser - 'view image'! - - - - - -   -

TODAY'S FEATURE - Blog #3316:

Tina and I stayed close to our hotel in Las Vegas on New Year's Eve.  Which was good because we had driven earlier in the week, several hundreds of miles going as far West as Pahrump to see a winery, and as far Southeast as Kingman, Arizona to see the Andy Devine collection and the Route 66 Museum, which I haven't blogged about yet.

So I blogged about seeing the Atomic Testing Museum yesterday, and how dissapointed I was in not being able to shoot photos inside...

Today, I'm blogging about a different museum... One that is a lot friendlier to its patrons!

That would be the Pinball Hall of Fame, that recently moved to its new location, almost across the street from what was the Liberace Museum and shopping center!

Tina and I spent a couple of hours in this living / working museum, and even she found it quite enjoyable!  When I say even she... That's because we usually don't stop to play pinball machines anywhere on vacations or around our own hometown for that matter!

But here in this warehouse atmosphere, there was so much history and the chance to play such classic games that we both had to put in quarters to play machines we had never seen before, but enjoyed the characters on the boards and windows that enticed us to play!

We both had a great time here, especially after having a rough day so far that morning of the December 31st, with the Atomic Testing Museum being stodgy on taking photos, and the Liberace Museum being closed / out of business with no notice!

The Pinball Hall of Fame museum was just what the doctor ordered for us... Fun!

We both highly suggest that if YOU are in Las Vegas, to check out this fun place!

What they say on that page is true:  "The Pinball Hall of Fame in Las Vegas is the world's largest display of working pinball machines. Admission is free. Play your way through history with a pocket full of quarters".

My understanding from talking with the manager there, (pictured to the left here), is that the owner only has room to show 1/5 of his collection in this warehouse!  Whew!  That is a BIG Collection!

So, with the Free Admission, the ability to take photos of all the machines, and to have 'Fun'... I can't help but give 'Two Thumbs Up' for this museum!  Check it out when you are next in Vegas! The Hall of Fame is at: 1610 E. Tropicana, Las Vegas, NV, 89119!

That's it for today's blog post.  I still have several blogs to post in the days to come about our Las Vegas trip, but Tina and I both caught bad colds this trip, which are keeping us somewhat 'down'.
