TODAY'S FEATURE - Blog #3321: I recently blogged about the then upcoming 'The Cape' Pilot Episode, (as seen here), and voiced my opinion that it needed some 'work' before it would be aired. Of course, I had only seen what the producers of the show wanted the audience at the 2010 Comic-Con International: San Diego to see, so as to create a 'buzz' about it in social media. One of the best parts about the special presentation at Comic-Con was the fact that there were 'Ashcans', mini-comics promotional items that were distributed at the panel. So even though the TV Show isn't based on a comic book, I feel fine blogging about it here, because they were smart enough to distribute those mini-comics (see top left for sample), at the presentation! It also appears that the producers were also smart enough to realize they needed to 'fix' the pilot that was shown at the Comic-Con. For me, the cast was basically unknown, except for Summer Glau, who has a built-in following wherever she goes. Smart move by the casting department! Casting David Lyons as Vince Faraday, a.k.a. The Cape, was an okay choice for me at the Comic-Con, after seeing the abbreviated showing. However, after seeing the full 2 hour pilot episode, I believe he was the right choice for this series. The rest of the cast were believable for the most part in their roles. With most of the actors unknown to me, I didn't see them in the same 'light' as I did Summer Glau, who played Orwell, an investigative blogger. So I could watch and rate them on their role playing only, not their 'star' status. Actually, I believe that too many villains were introduced in this two hour pilot episode. Something that a lot of viewers said about Spider-Man 3, which had too many villains. Here's a link to the Wikipedia entry for this TV Show so you can see who who in this new TV series. What was nice was the 'titling' of each segment shown after a commercial break. That was cool, something that the TV Show 'Heroes' should have thought of, as that show was just too convoluted. And yes, Tina and I watched all the episodes of 'Heroes' to the very end! The fact that this show runs on Monday nights with CHUCK, could make a one-two punch for NBC. However, the two shows may not have one audience viewership stay tuned for the next TV show. Yes, CHUCK has gotten a little more 'dark' this Season, but nowhere as 'Dark' as this 'The Cape' TV Show is, if it follows the pilot's lead. However, those that like their 'superheroes' fare in a 'Dark' sort of vein, (i.e. Batman Begins), will tune in to this show, if they are shown the 'light' to actually view it! The main cast meshes well with the pilot's plotline, and the supporting cast definitely meets the needs of the background setting. My only thought is that too many villains were thrown at the viewers in this pilot episode. That may be a 'turn-off' and invoke a do not 'tune-in' again kind of response. It is tough nowadays to produce a TV show that is for 'everyone' on a 'mainstream' network like NBC. Thus I'm hoping that the producers of this show have gone off and developed the 'dark' tone of this show in the episodes that are waiting to be shown. They need to stay with their 'genre' and tone and satisfy that crowd to be able to stay on the air. As for myself, I give the 'pilot episode' a Very Fine Plus (VF+) 8.5 out of a possible 10.0 on a comic book grading scale grade. It came a long way from what was presented to us both in film and mini-comic book format at the San Diego Comic Con back in July! -------------- I want to mention that the 'Ashcan' / 'Mini-comic book' that is shown at the top left of this blog post is available for sale in our online comic book shop as seen in this link. Currently we only have it listed for sale to those with USA addresses. If YOU are reading this and are not in the USA, but would like to purchase one, please be aware that it is an 8 page smaller than normal sized comic book, an 'ashcan'. Plus the shipping is a lot more than what is asked for shipping to USA addresses, as the weight of the package is higher due to the cardboard inserts that are protecting the mini-comic book in transit. Understanding that... Then you can message me via the 'contact the seller' link at the shop. My thanks to the producers who came to the 2010 Comic-Con International and presented this show to the audience!
