Above: Front Cover to the EC Comics Tribute #1 Mini-Comic from Main Enterprises!

TODAY'S FEATURE - Blog #3368:

Jim Main of Main Enterprises sent in a few of his recent publications for possible review in this Blog. I've been blogging about several of his publications, ranging from mini-comics like this one being reviewed today, to full sized magazines, as seen in this link: Main Enterprises.

So what's this EC Comics Tribute #1 all about?

Here's what the publisher has for a promo blurb:

"This excellently produced, 20 page, b&w, mini comic size title features illustrations that pay tribute to the late, great EC Comics company. The talents involved are Jeff Mason, JTW, Floydman, Barry Southworth, Jeff Austin, Scott Shriver, Terry Pavlet, Dave Farley, Jim Siergey and Troy Boyle. Top notch production by Dan Taylor. 2.50 postpaid."

The above is exactly what is printed in this mini-comic book!

It is all contained in a 4 & 1/4" x 5 & 1/2" publication.

The front cover, by Robert 'Floydman' Sumner, captures the essence of the EC Glory Days.

The inside front cover is a message from the Publisher, Jim Main, along with a table of contents listing the artists names and what pages they have contributed full page illustrations.

Jeff Mason has the most illustrations printed in this mini-comic, with seven out of the twenty pages. His illustrations also bring back memories of what EC used to publish.

Terry Pavlet's contributions on pages 5 & 12 also capture the mood of the sci-fi stories that were once published years ago.

The parody covers on pages 9 & 15 are also illustrated in the style of EC Comics, but with a twist.  Interesting concepts by Jim Siegey.

This mini-comic is exactly what its sub title is called: "EC For Me, See?!".  Other than the message from the publisher & the table of contents, there isn't any other text in the publication.

My Review Rating for this mini-comic is a: VERY FINE / NEAR MINT (VF/NM) out of a possible 10.0 Comic Book Grading scale.

Retail Price $1.75 / ($2.50 when mailed)  Page count: 20 pages

Format: mini-comic book with 1 staple, 4.25" x 5.5", black & white

Teen Plus Readers (IMO.)

Here is the link to the order page for this mini-comic. Please see the other page links on that order page for the additional publications from Main Enterprises.

There isn't a Facebook Fan Page for Main Enterprises.  There is a Closed: Limited Public Content Facebook Group Page, which I'm not listing here.

My thanks to Jim Main for sending me the package of a few of the publications he currently has listed for sale.  More review blogs are planned for the near future on them.

TODAY'S FEATURE - Blog #3367:

Of course today is St. Patrick's Day!  Which is why I titled this blog post, 'Happy St. Patrick's Day Via Comic Books!

I haven't found any comic book covers that actually feature St. Patrick... But I did find a few comic book covers that feature leprechauns... which I suppose is the next best thing?!

Leprechauns have been featured almost since comic book began, but aren't found on that many comic book covers that I've noticed...

St. Patrick's Day isn't as 'popular' on comic book covers as say... Easter, or Christmas, or the 4th of July, so finding comic book covers to share here was just a little harder than you would think!

Almost every blog that even mentions St. Patrick's Day includes the Dell Four Color #426 from September / October of 1952, that featured Porky Pig with a leprechaun, as seen at the top right!

The Dell Four Color #325 with Mickey Mouse and a leprechaun form April of 1951 isn't seen so much, when mentioning St. Patrick's Day. That one is the comic book cover seen at the top left.

The All-American Comics #70 from January / February with Green Lantern and a leprechaun, is included here, because I really enjoyed the cover artist's, (Paul Reinman), work in later years inking Jack Kirby on Fantastic Four, and then in his own pencils for ACG Comics.

Of course there are other comic book covers, including the HoRRoR 'Leprechaun' movie comic book series, but those are so 'different' from the comic book covers presented here today, that I'm going to 'ignore' them for this year...

I'm also 'saving' the other ones I've found for future St. Patrick's Day posts... As there really aren't all that many of them to share!

I'm dedicating this year's 'Happy St. Patrick's Day' blog post to my wife Tina LoSasso, who actually is more 'Irish' than 'Italian' even though her maiden name surname is 'Italian'!

Wishing ALL of YOU a 'Happy St. Patrick's Day', and don't forget to 'Wear the Green'!

~Michael D Hamersky, (who is Scottish / Not Irish from his mother's side, but is also wearing the green today!)

TODAY'S FEATURE - Blog #3366:

(Vinnie) This weekend, I was with my dad, and I decided I wanted to write a blog. As I was looking through the box of publications to review, the comic book "Mortifera" caught my eye. The artwork, let alone the name, seemed as though they were medieval styled. This caught my eye because I had just finished this past week, building a medieval castle with 3 classmates for a project at school. The following is my review on the comic Mortifera.

So what's this comic about, once you get past the front cover? Here's the promotional information from the publisher, which I didn't see until after reading the comic book:

"Mortifera is the story of the demon hunter Catherine Gregor, her brother Ethan and the demon Durin. The three are in pursuit of the demon Kanisus, who is slowly bringing more of his kind back to earth.
The story follows the Mortifera, an order of knights who use occult methods to combat demons. Conversing with the dead and using demonic relics are common practice for the Mortifera.
A rival group known as the Exturminata also hunt demons, but stay within the ecclesiastical guidelines of dispatching the fallen ones.
Catherine, Ethan and Durin must wage war with the damned as well as combat earthly rivals to survive. The story begins in Ireland with the death of Elias Gregor, Catherine's father and leader of the Mortifera. Kanisus has murdered his old rival Elias. In doing so he also came into the possesion of vast quantity of demon's blood, which is necessary for Demonic resurrection.
In desperation Catherine summons Durin, a demon from the Dark Ages to aide in their quest to kill off Kanisus and his followers.
Thus begins their quest for revenge and salvation of Europe from another demonic invasion."

In this comic, I really enjoyed the setting, the artwork, and the storyline. I enjoyed reading and learning about the middle ages in school recently, and this was one of the very few comics with the theme of medieval times that I have seen. The artwork was in the middle on a style between cartoon-like and realistic. It was vibrantly colored, but still maintained enough doom and gloom to hold the title of the dark ages. The storyline was interesting, and not hard to follow. It was an interesting story, and each of the main characters had started to be developed fully by the end.

What I didn't like about this comic was the ending. Right after a massive onslaught and a big confrontation between the main characters and an evil villain, it ends with "to be continued". I get that they want readers to have that suspense to buy the next comic. However, did it really have to end right after that?

Overall, I did enjoy this comic, but I just wish they ended the story with an explanation as to why it just ended at that point. I give this comic book, Mortifera, a comic book grade of Very Fine Plus (VF+), an 8.5 out of a 10.0 grading scale.

~Vinnie!

TODAY'S FEATURE - Blog #3365:

I met Hector Reyes again at the recent ConDor XVIII which was held at the Town & Country Resort in the Mission Valley area of San Diego.

Hector mentioned to me that the 2nd Annual Anime Conji would be held at this same facility that ConDor was at... During the upcoming weekend of March 25th - 27th of 2011.

Funny thing is... That Tina & I actually 'semi-attended' the final hour of the 1st Anime Conji that was held at the Doubletree Hotel Club back on April 9th - 11th of 2010!

That's because I drove us to that Doubletree instead of the Doubletree Hotel at the North side of I-10 when I was driving us to meet my cousin and her husband who had flown in to San Diego for a different convention last April!

So I was totally surpised to find the 1st Anime Conji at 'her hotel'!  However it turned out that we were at the wrong Doubletree!

But while Tina and I were there looking for my cousin... I took a quick look at the convention.

That's because we were surprised at the large turnout for this con.  Because after all, wasn't it the 1st gathering for this con?!

I took a few photos, as shown above, and then drove to the correct Doubletree Hotel next!

So my youngest son and I are interested in attending probably two of the three days of this year's con...

So what's happening at this year's con?

Here's just a brief outline:

Come to the 2nd annual Anime Conji: Returns the Saga Continues! Three days of Art, Music and Cosplay celebrating Japanese Animation and Manga.

TODAY'S FEATURE - Blog #3364:

I'm sure several readers of this blog are wondering... "What is Winkie Con?".

Heck, I wasn't even aware of it, until running into David Maxine at the recent ConDor XVIII, where he had a dealer's booth!
I was referred to his booth by Eric Shanower, who I met at an earlier panel during the first day of the three day convention.

Eric Shanower, who is a freelance cartoonist, illustrator, and writer, has been writing "adaptations of L. Frank Baum's original Oz novels for Marvel Comics, illustrated by artist Skottie Young. The first, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz was released in a hardcover collection on September 2, 2009. The follow-up, The Marvelous Land of Oz began in November 2009 as an 8 issue monthly comic series, while the third mini i.e. Ozma of Oz began in November 2010".
So when I stopped in at the booth, David and I talked about his 'Hungry Tiger Press' publications, which included quite a few OZ related items.

When I stated I had read several of the OZ books when I was a child, he mentioned the Winkie Con, which is now in its 47th year!
David presented me with a copy of his edited and designed program book for the 2009 Winkie Con, which I just finished reading.
I was impressed with the great layout of the program book and the fine illustrations that were included.  Plus being someone who enjoys reading history, I also read with interest the history of the Winkie Con.
Enough that I wanted to mention this upcoming convention!

Plus the fact that I've recently reviewed blogged several comics based on the OZ books by L. Frank Baum, including: 'Woe Is Oz' by Ethan Tarshish & Kelly Brown, 'OZopolis' - Written by: Kirk Kushin and Illustrated by: Gonzalo Martinez, and ECB / Emerald City Blues #2 by Karl Altstaetter, just to name a few.

Here is more on the upcoming event:

"Please keep in mind that the full-registration price for the weekend includes ALL con activities, your hotel room for two nights, six meals, coffee breaks, and all tips and gratuity. It's a GREAT deal! And a LOT of fun! Join us for the 47th annual Winkie Convention as we journey Under the Sea to celebrate all th...ings oceanic in and around L. Frank Baum’s Land of Oz. This year’s programming chairman, David Maxine, invites you to come and celebrate the 100th anniversary of Baum’s underwater fairytale The Sea Fairies and the 80th anniversary of Ruth Plumly Thompson’s Pirates in Oz. What could be better than pirates and mermaids in Oz?

Our guests of honor will be Tommy Kovac, writer of the acclaimed new comic book series The Royal Historian of Oz, and Kirk Kushin, writer of the new comic book series Ozopolis. Oz writer and artist Eric Shanower will take you on a visual tour of the deep as we explore our theme of Oz Under the Sea. Other convention highlights include a terrific new documentary on Fred Stone, who played the Scarecrow in the 1903 Broadway Wizard of Oz musical, featuring rare film footage of Stone in action. You’ll see a presentation on W. W. Denslow's many rare and elegant book cover designs. You’ll discover the brand new phenomenon of making your own replica Ruby Slippers! This is becoming a very high-end art and the quality, detail, and research that go into these amazing shoes is not to be believed! On Saturday night you’ll be treated to a full evening of Ozzy song starring Joe Cascone and David Haines from the Toronto Civic Light Opera Company. This program will feature a hundred years of Oz music from stage, film, and pop music, and a few surprises, too! It will be a night to remember!

And don’t miss our traditional Winkie Costume Contest, Treasure Hunt, and Winkie Quiz—not to mention the fabulous Winkie Auction of rare Baum and Oz material!"

I've never been to a Winkie Con before, but this sure sounds like fun to me! For those of YOU that have a fondness for the OZ series of books by L. Frank Baum and others, (see this link for the books!), here are links that you should look at now to see if you can make this convention this year!

The Facebook Event Page for this event is: 2011 Winkie Con

I do not see a Facebook Fan Page for Winkie Con, although two Facebookers 'created' this upcoming event on facebook, (David Maxine & Peter Hanff).

The Winkie Newsletter Website can be found here.

The Hungry Tiger Talk blog post on the Winkie Con can be found here.

The History of the Winkies can be found here.

The above links appear to be just a few of the links that mention the upcoming Winkie Con this July.  Again, if YOU have a fondness or interest in the OZ boooks or film(s), now is the time to check this event out!
