TODAY'S FEATURE - Blog #3370:

I was very pleased to receive the package in the mail containing two issues of Classics Illustrated that are being reprinted by Jack Lake Productions Inc., out of Canada!

That's because Mike Gagnon had given me a 'heads up' that they would be coming, after I expressed my interest in seeing them.

I 'grew up' with Classics Illustrated, although by that time many of the earliest of the series had been reprinted several times.  By the time I obtained them, usually to give me a 'picture' of what the novel was about that I had to read for English classes, I had already read the novel in text format. I was a good reader, but sometimes the sequential illustrations in the Classics Illustrated would help make some of the language used by the original authors come more "to life" for me!

So what's with the new reprint editions?  And why should YOU possibly add these to YOUR reading list?  Well, here's part of the press release that was sent to me:

"Gagnon is breaking new ground as an inker and colorist for Classics Illustrated, published by Jack Lake Productions of Toronto. Classics Illustrated was a series of young reader friendly comics published in the 1950s and 60s that featured comic stories adapted from classic literature and true biographies of historical figures.

Today Jack Lake Productions re-masters and reprints the original Classics Illustrated comics for a new generation of readers.

“It’s amazing to be able to work on some of these books that were created by comic industry legends.” said Gagnon. “There’s a whole team of very talented artists working for JLP, each with their own individual projects, putting out some great stuff.”

Gagnon’s most recent project with Classics Illustrated is issue #129, which features the true biography of the real life frontier legend Davy Crockett. The original version was published in 1956 and illustrated by the legendary Lou Cameron. For the new versions Gagnon takes the original printed artwork and restores the black line art or “inks”, adds additional embellishments, and then creates all new colors.

“It’s crazy because some of the same books I’m restoring for a new generation of readers, I used to read when I was a kid, and they had been around for decades by then. It’s amazing the longevity this material has.” Gagnon added."

So that's the reason the comic has been reprinted.  Why YOU should think about adding  this to YOUR reading list is that I'm thinking that you would probably like to know about the persons that Classics Illustrated is having reprinted at this time for a new audience.  Plus I'm sure you also know of younger persons that would enjoy reading these, both for possible school projects, as well as getting to 'know' the characters that are being written & illstrated about!

I for one really enjoyed this issue of Davy Crockett.  Of course I was around in the mid 1950's when the Coonskin Cap Craze by Davy on the Walt Disney TV Show captured the imaginations of many 'baby boomers' such as myself!

So just to see what my youngest son would think of the 2nd issue that came in the package to me... I let him take it and read it.  I'm looking forward to seeing what he thought about issue #142 on Abraham Lincoln!  That will be published here in the near future...

The comic book sized publication has a stiff paper cover, and better paper interior pages than the original comics that were first published.

The inside front cover has an article on David Crockett, (he never called himself 'Davy'), which is continued on the back inside cover. Along with a recommended readings list.

In addition there was a two page story titled 'The Story of Great Britain' Part 3: Saxon England, which was the third of twelve features on the hisotry of Great Britain.

On the last interior page was a text piece on 'James Bowie', who also fought at the Alamo, which is where Davy Crockett died.

I've owned an earlier printing of this comic book, but have sold it since then.  I found that having this newly printed edition of the same comic book to be well produced, and a thing of beauty as well as more than readable!

I want to bring to your attention the inker and colorist of this newly printed edition...

Here's the Creator Bio for Mike Gagnon: "

Mike Gagnon is a comics pro with over a decade of experience, as well as a wandering nomad in the frozen climes of Canada. Gagnon is best known as a writer and colorist, but has also been known to do some fine inks and cover illustrations.

Mike spends his time using one or more of his talents creating work for clients of all sizes, from Marvel to small press. When not busy with paying gigs Mike enjoys developing his own creator owned comics where he continues to hone his craft in storytelling and expand his repertoire of skills. You can see more of his work at www.mikegagnon.ca".

Mike can be proud to be associated with this publishing effort!

My review rating for this comic book is a NEAR MINT (NM) 9.4 out of a 10.0 possible comic book grading scale.

If you don't find this comic book at your local retailer... You can find these comic books for sale at the Jack Lake Productions web site.

If you would like signed copies and / or original art, check out Mike's web site at: MikeGagnon.ca.

I do not see a Facebook Fan Page for the Classics Illustrated series.  However, there is a 'community page' on Facebook for Classics Illustrated., that gives a good background history, that is based on the Wikipedia entry.

Again, I'm looking forward to what my youngest son thinks of the issue I gave him to read and then review blog....

My thanks to Mike Gagnon for submitting these two issues of this comic book series for possible review here in my blog!

TODAY'S FEATURE - Blog #3369:

My thanks to Roger & Val Kevan of RV's Komix, who sent me copies of the preview publication for the 2011 Phoenix Comicon!  Roger & I go way back to the early days of the Comic-Con International: San Diego, when it was first known as the San Diego Comic Con.  He, Val and I met up again recently at the 2010 Comic-Con, as seen at the top left of this blog post.

The preview publication's cover displays several characters, thus showing the reader that there are several elements that comprise the comic con.  Including DC Superheroes, Marvel Superheroes, Steampunk, Sci-Fi, and fantasy.

Checking out the inside front cover I found that several of the 100+ guests that are attending this year are from TV & Film also.  Including Leonard Nimoy, George Takei, Billy Dee Williams, Bruce Boxleitner, Adam Baldwin, Elvira, and more!

Of course there are comics guests as well, including Stan Lee, Todd McFarlane, Mark Texeira, Stan Sakai, Whilce Portacio, Michael Golden, Todd Nauck, Dan Wickline, Kirk Kushin, and Larry Hama among others mentioned on the first two pages.

Programming... You ask about programming?  Well, there's over 500+ hours of events at the upcoming Phoenix Comicon!  There were several listed in the preview publication, along with pics from previous cons.

Additionally there are a few events, including: Kids Need to Read, Geek Prom Charity Event, Charity Art Auction, Smuggler's Run, and Bounty Hunt that were listed in the publication.

The Con Hotel, Hyatt Regency, had its rates published, which seemed to be a fair amount to me to stay so close to the con center.

There was also a listing of several of the 'Con Exclusives', including Lady Death comics, Mecha Lincolnstein piece, Tyrannosaurus Rex print, etc., which always have interested parties looking to score con exclusives like those.

Avatar Press seems to be coming to Phoenix Comicon in a 'big way', with creators, exclusives, etc.

This con also has Anime & Costuming being featured. Plus gaming going on.

There will be a 'Steampunk' presence at the con, with a 'Steampunk Ball', and a 'Steampunk Fashion Show'.

Plus a couple of our favorite TV shows will be represented there by cast and creators, including those from CHUCK & EuREKA!

There seems to be a lot of different pop culture niches being covered at this show.

For those of you that attended last year, and were a little disappointed in the staging of the registration... That issue appears to be addressed for this year.  Matt Solberg has an 'open letter from the convention director' stating that the size of the Con has tripled for this year.  And that the registration problem from last year has shown the organizers a need for indoor registration lines.  So if you are in the area, check it out!

The con runs from May 26th - 29th of 2011.  Yes, that is the Memorial Day Weekend!  Full event passes $35 until May 25th.  Kids 12 & Under Free with paying adult!

The 2011 Phoenix Comicon will be held at the Phoenix Convention Center & the Hyatt Regency!

Here is the Facebook Fan Page for Phoenix Comicon.

Here is the Facebook Event Page for the 2011 Phoenix Comicon.

Here is the eBay Store for Roger & Val's RV's Komix.

Again, my thanks to Roger & Val Kevan for sending me the preview publication for this upcoming con for me to blog about it!

TODAY'S FEATURE - Blog #3368:

Jim Main of Main Enterprises sent in a few of his recent publications for possible review in this Blog. I've been blogging about several of his publications, ranging from mini-comics like this one being reviewed today, to full sized magazines, as seen in this link: Main Enterprises.

So what's this EC Comics Tribute #1 all about?

Here's what the publisher has for a promo blurb:

"This excellently produced, 20 page, b&w, mini comic size title features illustrations that pay tribute to the late, great EC Comics company. The talents involved are Jeff Mason, JTW, Floydman, Barry Southworth, Jeff Austin, Scott Shriver, Terry Pavlet, Dave Farley, Jim Siergey and Troy Boyle. Top notch production by Dan Taylor. 2.50 postpaid."

The above is exactly what is printed in this mini-comic book!

It is all contained in a 4 & 1/4" x 5 & 1/2" publication.

The front cover, by Robert 'Floydman' Sumner, captures the essence of the EC Glory Days.

The inside front cover is a message from the Publisher, Jim Main, along with a table of contents listing the artists names and what pages they have contributed full page illustrations.

Jeff Mason has the most illustrations printed in this mini-comic, with seven out of the twenty pages. His illustrations also bring back memories of what EC used to publish.

Terry Pavlet's contributions on pages 5 & 12 also capture the mood of the sci-fi stories that were once published years ago.

The parody covers on pages 9 & 15 are also illustrated in the style of EC Comics, but with a twist.  Interesting concepts by Jim Siegey.

This mini-comic is exactly what its sub title is called: "EC For Me, See?!".  Other than the message from the publisher & the table of contents, there isn't any other text in the publication.

My Review Rating for this mini-comic is a: VERY FINE / NEAR MINT (VF/NM) out of a possible 10.0 Comic Book Grading scale.

Retail Price $1.75 / ($2.50 when mailed)  Page count: 20 pages

Format: mini-comic book with 1 staple, 4.25" x 5.5", black & white

Teen Plus Readers (IMO.)

Here is the link to the order page for this mini-comic. Please see the other page links on that order page for the additional publications from Main Enterprises.

There isn't a Facebook Fan Page for Main Enterprises.  There is a Closed: Limited Public Content Facebook Group Page, which I'm not listing here.

My thanks to Jim Main for sending me the package of a few of the publications he currently has listed for sale.  More review blogs are planned for the near future on them.

TODAY'S FEATURE - Blog #3367:

Of course today is St. Patrick's Day!  Which is why I titled this blog post, 'Happy St. Patrick's Day Via Comic Books!

I haven't found any comic book covers that actually feature St. Patrick... But I did find a few comic book covers that feature leprechauns... which I suppose is the next best thing?!

Leprechauns have been featured almost since comic book began, but aren't found on that many comic book covers that I've noticed...

St. Patrick's Day isn't as 'popular' on comic book covers as say... Easter, or Christmas, or the 4th of July, so finding comic book covers to share here was just a little harder than you would think!

Almost every blog that even mentions St. Patrick's Day includes the Dell Four Color #426 from September / October of 1952, that featured Porky Pig with a leprechaun, as seen at the top right!

The Dell Four Color #325 with Mickey Mouse and a leprechaun form April of 1951 isn't seen so much, when mentioning St. Patrick's Day. That one is the comic book cover seen at the top left.

The All-American Comics #70 from January / February with Green Lantern and a leprechaun, is included here, because I really enjoyed the cover artist's, (Paul Reinman), work in later years inking Jack Kirby on Fantastic Four, and then in his own pencils for ACG Comics.

Of course there are other comic book covers, including the HoRRoR 'Leprechaun' movie comic book series, but those are so 'different' from the comic book covers presented here today, that I'm going to 'ignore' them for this year...

I'm also 'saving' the other ones I've found for future St. Patrick's Day posts... As there really aren't all that many of them to share!

I'm dedicating this year's 'Happy St. Patrick's Day' blog post to my wife Tina LoSasso, who actually is more 'Irish' than 'Italian' even though her maiden name surname is 'Italian'!

Wishing ALL of YOU a 'Happy St. Patrick's Day', and don't forget to 'Wear the Green'!

~Michael D Hamersky, (who is Scottish / Not Irish from his mother's side, but is also wearing the green today!)

TODAY'S FEATURE - Blog #3366:

(Vinnie) This weekend, I was with my dad, and I decided I wanted to write a blog. As I was looking through the box of publications to review, the comic book "Mortifera" caught my eye. The artwork, let alone the name, seemed as though they were medieval styled. This caught my eye because I had just finished this past week, building a medieval castle with 3 classmates for a project at school. The following is my review on the comic Mortifera.

So what's this comic about, once you get past the front cover? Here's the promotional information from the publisher, which I didn't see until after reading the comic book:

"Mortifera is the story of the demon hunter Catherine Gregor, her brother Ethan and the demon Durin. The three are in pursuit of the demon Kanisus, who is slowly bringing more of his kind back to earth.
The story follows the Mortifera, an order of knights who use occult methods to combat demons. Conversing with the dead and using demonic relics are common practice for the Mortifera.
A rival group known as the Exturminata also hunt demons, but stay within the ecclesiastical guidelines of dispatching the fallen ones.
Catherine, Ethan and Durin must wage war with the damned as well as combat earthly rivals to survive. The story begins in Ireland with the death of Elias Gregor, Catherine's father and leader of the Mortifera. Kanisus has murdered his old rival Elias. In doing so he also came into the possesion of vast quantity of demon's blood, which is necessary for Demonic resurrection.
In desperation Catherine summons Durin, a demon from the Dark Ages to aide in their quest to kill off Kanisus and his followers.
Thus begins their quest for revenge and salvation of Europe from another demonic invasion."

In this comic, I really enjoyed the setting, the artwork, and the storyline. I enjoyed reading and learning about the middle ages in school recently, and this was one of the very few comics with the theme of medieval times that I have seen. The artwork was in the middle on a style between cartoon-like and realistic. It was vibrantly colored, but still maintained enough doom and gloom to hold the title of the dark ages. The storyline was interesting, and not hard to follow. It was an interesting story, and each of the main characters had started to be developed fully by the end.

What I didn't like about this comic was the ending. Right after a massive onslaught and a big confrontation between the main characters and an evil villain, it ends with "to be continued". I get that they want readers to have that suspense to buy the next comic. However, did it really have to end right after that?

Overall, I did enjoy this comic, but I just wish they ended the story with an explanation as to why it just ended at that point. I give this comic book, Mortifera, a comic book grade of Very Fine Plus (VF+), an 8.5 out of a 10.0 grading scale.

If I have it... You can find it 'Under The Big Top Of Comics' at:   ComicBooksCircus.com.

If it isn't available in my online 'Local Comic Book Shop, (LCBS), then you may be able find it in my Amazon affiliate link, as seen here:  Comics & Graphic Novels at Amazon!
