The comic book shown above was published in 1956 by The Fellowship of Reconciliation. To my knowledge that is the oldest comic book with MLK on the cover.
-
This comic book had an English printing of 250,000 copies, and a Spanish version of 125,000 copies. They were used for teaching tools about the civil rights movement.
-
The graphic novel shown near the bottom right of this post is 'King' by Ho Che Anderson.

TODAY'S FEATURE - Blog #3326:

Today, January 17th of 2011, marks the 25th Anniversary of the Martin Luther King Jr. Federal Holiday.

The Day was also designated as a 'national day of volunteer service' by Congress in 1994, which I'm sure not too many Americans are aware of.

However, many Americans do honor the civil rights leader's legacy by engaging in volunteer services.

If YOU don't know how or where to volunteer your services today, or later on this week, you could check out this Facebook Fan Page: Create The Good!

TODAY'S FEATURE - Blog #3325:

Tina and I have been fighting these bad colds we picked up in Las Vegas over the Holidays Vacation that we took.

However, my youngest son, Vinnie, was visiting us this weekend, and he expressed his desire to see the Green Hornet film that came out on this past Friday.

Well... Since I was interested in seeing what the 2011 Black Beauty would do in the film... We took in an afternoon matinee yesterday.

Here are 'Our Takes' (reviews) on the film.

Please Note:  SPOILER WARNINGS AHEAD!

First: Tina's 'Take':

(From a mainstream movie goer with recent comics knowledge through exposure the past nine years of being married to a comics geek)

The Green Hornet movie is similiar to the 1960's tv series in one sense: Kato and The Black Beauty are, again, the entertainment highlights.

I went into the movie with low expectations. Michael has been ragging on the casting for over a year. And after being dragged to The (not so) Incredible Hulk (Ang Lee version), I was reluctant to see another "green" comic book movie. I'm glad to say I wasn't expecting much and I wasn't disappointed.

Highlights for me:

Kato, Jay Chou as Kato, Kato beating the crap out of Britt Reid

All the Black Beauties

The soundtrack lifted otherwise boring scenes...loved hearing Gangsta Paradise and seeing Rogen cut short

Hearing the Flight of the Bumblebee theme from the original tv show and seeing the swirling hornet (Credits at the end of the film)

The silly, implausible, action vs. the typical CGI action found in most comic book movies

Lowlights:

Seth Rogen

Seth Rogen's "comedic" dialogue

The slew of underdeveloped supporting characters

(did I mention?) Seth Rogen as Britt Reid

In the original tv series, Bruce Lee as Kato had me and my brothers running around the house karate-chopping and kicking each other. This movie update will be lucky to inspire anyone to buy a ticket.

Grade: FINE PLUS (F+) 6.5 Out of a 10.0 Possible Comic Book Grading Scale.

Vinnie's 'Take':

(From a tween's POV)

We just came out of a mid-afternoon viewing of "The Green Hornet," and these are my thoughts on it.

When reading this, you should know that I have not had much prior knowledge of the Green Hornet. The only knowledge of it I have is from the few episodes I have seen with my father. These were from the 1967 Green Hornet TV series starring Van Williams and Bruce Lee.

What I liked about this movie was the humor and the action.

I will admit that most of this humor was adult orientated, but I still found it funny. I also found it funny that the Green Hornet was kicking or hitting enemies that Kato knocked out or killed already, and he would exclaim sbout how awesome he did, although in reality, he did little to nothing.

My favorite parts about the action were mainly the fight scenes, but a few of the chases I enjoyed as well. What made me most enjoy the fight scenes was when Kato was fighting, and time "slowed." It didn't actually slow, but he felt it did as he concentrated. During this time, he was able to identify any weapons, and he easily manuevuered himself to react to anything the opponents did. It was as if he was "in the zone," you could say. Besides that, he was just awesome.

I can honestly say that there was nothing I didn't like in this movie. I loved the filming, casting, and even the songs used, although some may argure they weren't the best.

Although the rating is PG-13, I don't think I would recommend this to someone under at least 15. There was just a lot of adult humor, strong language, most of which was for no reason or purpose, and quite a bit of violence and blood. You wouldn't even have to to be a "hardcore" Green Hornet fan to enjoy this movie; just some interest in action films and you would enjoy this.

As you can see that I am overly thrilled by this movie, it shouldn't be a surprise that I am giving this movie, "The Green Hornet," a NEAR MINT (NM) a 9.4 out of a 10.0 possible comic book grade scale.

Michael's Take:

Well... I've hinted in this Blog a few times that I would love to see the 'Black Beauty' in action in this film.  Especially after being up close to it back at the Comic-Con International: San Diego way back in 2009!  Yeah, THAT long ago!

Sheesh!  (See the two pics at the bottom right of this blog post for pics of Tina and myself in front of the Black Beauty at that 2009 SDCC!)

So, when my youngest son expressed his desire to see this film, I talked Tina into viewing it today at a mid-afternoon Saturday Matinee. As we are both still sick from a really bad cold we both caught in Las Vegas... Well, I thought it would be better to attend an earlier showing, without coughing and hacking away, interferring with the film.

Well... I was definitely pleased with the 'Black Beauty' in this film!  Or should I say 'Black Beauties'!  As there were at least three of them in the Reid Garage at the mansion.

The 'Black Beauty' was the highlight of the film for me.  It was really cool to see it in action!  And I'm NOT that much of an auto freak!

Kato, played by Jay Chou, came across really well in the film.

Britt Reid, a.k.a. The Green Hornet, played by Seth Rogen, was defintely NOT 'My' Green Hornet!  Van Williams will stay that for me!

Lenore Case, 'Casey', played by Cameron Diaz, was both 'Hot' and 'brainy'.  She just didn't see enough 'air time' IMO.

Christoph Waltz as Benjamin Chudnofsky, the villain, actually did pretty darn good in this film.  Although the film was played for ;laughs', he actually rolled with the drama / comedy / action scenes.

David Harbour as D.A. Frank Scanlon... Well, it's NOT his fault that the film re-wrote his role that I 'knew' him as in the 1967 TV Series...

There was a 'nod' to the TV Series... Edward James Olmos played Mike Axford...

Tom Wilkinson as James Reid, Britt's wealthy father and successful newspaper publisher was a 'new' bit for me... But vital to the storyline.

Yet even with all of the above characters, and a lot more included, the overall film for me had a LOT of ups and downs.

Maybe I'm getting a little older... But I'm really starting to get annoyed with younger creators taking time honored and revered characters of yesterday and 'playing' with them, 'updating' them, and siccing them onto today's younger audiences as being 'THE' character.

We stayed till the very end of the credits, so yeah, I did see that this film was 'based' on the Green Hornet 'radio series', not the 'film serials' of before my time even, and definitely not the 'TV Series' of 1967.

Yet, that is what caused me to even want to see this film in the first place.  Especially after seeing the 'souped up' Black Beauty at the July 2009 San Diego Comic Con!

To wait this long... (Read the Wikipedia entry for the Green Hornet film here as to why...!) And then end up with this uneven film... Well, I'm surprised myself as to the comic book grade I'm going to post here in a couple of paragraphs!

Did I enjoy seeing the film on the 'Big Screen'? Well yes, but I would have enjoyed it more if it was 'Brand New', and NOT building or destroying on time honored traditions of the Green Hornet, IMO.

Would I have gone to see this film if it didn't have that 'Green Hornet' tie-in?  Probably not... Because of Seth Rogen's take on the title character, and seeing the trailers beforehand would have made me not really care to see the film.

The Black Beauty and Kato were the best things in this film for me.

Which are two of the three reasons I even re-play the 1967 TV Series episodes at times for Vinnie and myself. It's a shame that Britt Reid and the Green Hornet were 'dumbed down' so much.

I'm giving this 2011 Green Hornet film a VERY FINE MINUS (VF-) 7.5 on a comic book grading scale.

----------------------

The above reviews were from three people, from different age groups, (late baby boomer / a late tween / early baby boomer), and different levels of exposure to the 'Green Hornet' history, (a child during 1967 TV Series / not yet born / a teenager who loved the 1967 TV series).

Thus I believe the reason for the wide variance in 'comic book grading' this film!

Take the above, compare it to your level of knowledge of the Green Hornet, and decide for yourself as to whether or not to see it on the 'Big Screen' / '3D' it / or wait for the video.  It cost us $25 in tickets to see this film, and it wasn't the 3D version...

TODAY'S FEATURE - Blog #3324:

I met Ray-Anthony Height for the first time at the 2009 Long Beach Comic Con (LBCC).

I noticed that he, like so many other comics artists that set up at table in Artists Alley at the different comic cons, was very busy sketching commissions for paying customers.

This I know pays for the cost of the table, the overhead of actually traveling to the comic con, etc., etc.

I have mentioned him several more times about his going to be attending different comic cons in this blog and on my Facebook Profile Page and Group Page since then.

I liked his sketches he was working on, and of course the banner behind him at the comic cons would grab my attention, (Wonder Woman!).

However I finally mentioned to him, that although he was a published artist with Image and Marvel, plus work for Hasbro and Upper Deck, he didn't have any of his works for sale at his table, so that 'newbies' to his works would be able to see them, and possibly buy them...

Well, this past LBCC, Ray-Anthony had a 'Sketchbook' titled 'The Grind Mini 2010' - subtitled 'Art of Ray-Anthony Height'!

The 1st day of the 2010 LBCC, I saw him with his head down as usual sketching, so I went around the tables and stood behind him, watching him sketch.  He finally saw Tina taking photos of me behind him, (see top left photo), and starting cracking a smile!  He's a really nice guy!

Near the end of last day of the 2010 LBCC, Tina and I went by his table again, and he asked us to stop.  He gave me his 'Sketchbook', which I've read and enjoyed.  (See top right photo of this blog.)

Ray-Anthony started on Facebook with just a Member Profile Page, then started a Fan Page.  Near the end of last year he re-started with a new Fan Page, which I suggest you 'Like': Ray-Anthony Height And Icons.

As stated above, Ray-Anthony has seen several of his works be published.  However, the GCD (Grand Comics Database), has the problem of Ray-Anthony having an 'unusual' spelling of his name. So you'll find his credits under:

Ray-Anthony Height

Ray Anthony Height

Ray Height

and Anthony Height.

Plus possibly even other variations of the spelling of his name?!

Wherever you find his name in comics, you should stop and take a look at his published work. Plus if YOU are at a comic con and see his banner with his name, stop him for a second and say hi! Plus ask about his 'Sketchbook' for sale!

If you don't attend the comic cons that Ray-Anthony Height exhibits at on the con circuit, you could always 'Like' his Facebook Fan Page!

Ray-Anthony must have seen how search engines and reviewers have different variations of his name listed... So his web site is currently being revamped with the RAHeight.com name.  A recent post there states he will no longer being taking commissions online, nor conducting eBay sales of his works, as there isn't enough time to do so.

So I want to wish Ray-Anthony continued success in 2011, and I'll see you again at a comic con for sure!

----------------

The above was my 'Spotlight On... Ray-Anthony Height', one of several 'Spotlight On' blogs I've done over the years...

Matter of fact, YOU can check out the 'Spotlight On...' blogs by clicking this link where there are over 915 different links served up by Google!

There aren't THAT many individual posts, but the blogs have been picked up and re-posted by many others, including the person 'Spotlighted' at this Blog!

TODAY'S FEATURE - Blog #3323:

I met John Lustig and his wife Shelagh Lustig a few years back at a comic con.  This after reading John's LAST KISS feature in Comic Buyer's Guide for several years!

I have mentioned John's works before in my Facebook pages and in this blog as attending certain comic cons, but hadn't devoted a full blog post to his works. So I'm going to correct that here today!

John gave my wife, Tina LoSasso, and myself some LAST KISS items at the recent 2010 Long Beach Comic Con, (LBCC), including two issues of his LAST KISS comic book series that ran for a short time back in 2001 - 2003. There were a total of four issues in this series from Shanda Fantasy Arts.  John has a limited number of Issue #1, so he sells those only at comic cons at his table. The others have been available for purchase via the mail, along with other merchandise with LAST KISS logo / theme / etc. at the main web site LastKissComics.com

As I stated at the top of this post, I have liked this feature since first seeing it in Comic Buyer's Guide as a 'cartoon' feature.  I missed out on reading the 4 issue set of the comic, which is why I never blogged about it.  However, after reading issues #2 & 3, my respect for what John has done to date has increased! Those two issues were very well crafted for a comic book print format!

So what is 'LAST KISS' all about?

Here's what the web site states:

Pairing vintage comic art with hilarious, new dialog by Disney veteran writer John Lustig, Last Kiss revels in the absurdities of love, lust and ‘life with lip.’

The series originated when Lustig bought the publishing rights to a romance comic book series from the 50′s and 60′s, and started rewriting the stories for fun. Since then, the re-dialogued comics have been a popular feature in newspapers, magazines, comic books and greeting cards.

Today Last Kiss is gaining popularity and is also available on e-cards from JibJab.com and greeting cards (late 2009)from NobleWorks.  Check lastkissinc.com for the latest comic, news and product launches.

What about John Lustig, himself?

Here's what the web site reveals about him:

A top Disney creator for over 20 years, John Lustig has also written outrageously silly comics for Marvel, Viz and more.  He is best-known for his oddball series, Last Kiss, which features old comic book art with witty new dialog.

Before comics ruined his brain, Lustig was a newspaper reporter and columnist–covering everything from mass murders to school lunch menus. (Thankfully, never in the same article!)

In 2001, Cartoonist Northwest presented Lustig with its highest award, the Golden Toonie. Lustig lives in Seattle with his wife and a giant, insane cat.

And now, as the title of this blog post states...

John Lustig's LAST KISS Is Back In The Newspaper Business!

I'll re-print what John posted on his web site:

Last Kiss is back in the newspaper business. As of today, Last Kiss will be appearing in every issue of the Dayton City Paper. Yes, I’m excited! Today Dayton, tomorrow the universe…or at least maybe Akron, OH.

Congrats, John!  And here's to a whole new readership finding out about your great works!

Oh, and before I forget... I was waiting for Tina to blog about the above issue #3 of the LAST KISS comic book series, but she has been so busy with all of her clients book launches that she hasn't made time to write a blog about this issue or #2.  However, she enjoyed reading the issues, and also the regular cartoons posted by John on Facebook.

So I'll post my own rating here for the issue above...

Review Rating: 9.4 NEAR MINT (NM) out of a possible 10.0 Comic Book Grading scale.  There is a LOT of work on taking the old comics and re-scripting them into a saleable comic book.  I can see that quite easily, and being a guy that used to buy romance comics for the artwork, (Jack Kirby, Gene Colan, John Romita Jr., John Buscema, Don Heck, etc.), I can enjoy the concept that John Lustig brings to the genre!

Lest I forget, here's John Facebook Fan Page for Last Kiss, which I urge YOU to 'Like'!

As well as John's web site for LastKissComics.com where YOU too can purchase these goodies!

TODAY'S FEATURE - Blog #3322:

I met the writer of this comic book at the recent 2010 Long Beach Comic, (LBCC).  His comic book, OZopolis #1 was one of many comic book that I received there for possible review in this blog.

In this case, I went by the cover and decided to place it in the middle of my 'To Read / Possibly to Review Blog' stack.

I had interest in the topic, Wizard of Oz, because I am a fan of the film and the 1st book.  Plus I read most of the other books in this OZ series when I was much younger.  "Oz Series?", you say? Yes, OZ series!

L Frank Baum wrote 14 total in the series, starting with the one everyone knows about in 1900. After his death in 1919, Ruth Plumly Thompson went on to write 19 more in the series.  Then other writers took over and a total of 40 are considered the canon of Oz, and titled as a group 'The Famous Forty'.  Other books have been written since, but the original forty are the foundation of the OZ Universe.

So I just finished reading this comic book last night... And I knew I had to blog about it here this morning!

Why?  Because when I turned the cover of the comic book and started reading the story, I was 'transported' back to my childhood when I read those sequels to the first book!

Here's my 'Take' (review):

Front Cover:  The fact that Dorothy was pictured as a blonde on the cover, (which she was in the OZ books), made me realize that this would probably be true to the original series of books.  However, it didn't make me place this comic book as one of the ones I had to read right away.  And I get a LOT of comics at comic cons and others mailed to me for possible review here...

Inside Front Cover:  Was laid out nicely, and gave credit to the L. Frank Baum, the originator of the OZ series.  Nice layout.

Splash Page: the left third of this page was an illustration, and gave a hint of the majesty of OZ. The other two-thirds was text, which brought me up to date on the storyline, even though this was issue #1 of this new series. Good touch!

Interior Pages:  The artwork immediately 'transported' me to my childhood when I read many of the 'Famous Forty' of this series!  The black and white interior pages were in sharp contrast to the color front cover.  But were 'better' illustrations in my opinion!  The storyline and dialogue by Kirk Kushin kept my interest going as well as bringing to life characters I hadn't read about in decades.  Gonzalo Martinez did a 'Fantastic' job in illustrating the pages!  Extremely well done! Laura Abella's Logo Design for OZopolis was perfect for this introductory issue of the comic book series.

The Final Page was a note from the writer, Kirk. With an invitation to visit OZopolis.com for more info on the series.  Good way to continue the interest!

The Inside Back Cover was a pin-up lovingly dedicated to Ruth S. Smith.

The Back Cover was the Ka-Blam ad, as they are the printers of this comic book.  Which BTW, was the 1st time I had seen a comic book from them with printer defects.  I'm not taking that away from the publication itself, but it was unusual to say the least.

My overall thoughts on this comic book is that I would definitely recommend it for all ages! The interior pages of this comic book surpassed what I originally thought this comic book would be.

To 'transport' me to fond rememberances of a book series that I had read as a child, remaining 'true' to the original vision of L. Frank Baum takes some 'doing'!  I look forward to more issues in this series from the publishers!

Review Rating: 9.4 NEAR MINT (NM) out of a possible 10.0 Comic Book Grading scale.
