TODAY'S FEATURE - Blog #3341:

I started reading this mini-series with Issue #3 back in October of  2010.  As I said in my Blog #3261 that reviewed Issues #3 & 4, I normally don't start reading a series that has already started... But the artwork of these two issues made me change my mind.

After reading both issues, I found myself enjoying the theme, and then read the monthly publications since then, most recently blogging about issue #5 in Blog #3281, and issue #6 in my Blog #3329.

As you can see by reading those earlier blogs, this series kept my interest and I found that I would enjoy seeing the collected series come out in a collected edition...

Well, my PO Box had the above shown hardcover collected edition in it on Friday evening, so I just had to read the two issues I hadn't read already!  And then moved it to the top of the 'to be reviewed' stack!

Here's what the publisher uses for the 'promo blurb':

"A professional assassin comes out of retirement--out of boredom, out of necessity? He takes a job and soon finds himself emeshed in an international conspiracy, and when he begins to question the identies of his employers, he find himself seeking new allies to cover his back.  This third volume of the Eisner Award-nominated 'The Killer' collects the six-issue MODUS VIENDI series."

So what's my take on this 'collected edition'?

Well, I'm not going to recap the 3rd through 6th issues again that were collected in this hardcover edition.

Nor am I going to cover what happened in the first two issues that I missed out on reading early on.

What I am going to say is this:  Even though the 'politics' expressed in this series / hardcover edition are NOT my 'politics', I still found that the storyline was a 'satisfying read'.  Again, it was the artwork that first pulled me into reading it, starting at issue #3 for me.

This is a good enough read to suggest to your non-comics reading friends, to introduce them to sequential art in a 'collected edition'.  If you have to tell them it's a 'graphic novel' to get them to even touch it, go right ahead!

I will touch upon what I said in my review blog of issue #6.  I was a little 'surprised' to find out that the 'story' would be 'continued', after reading what I thought was issue #6 of 6 issues in the series.

Here in the collected edition hardcover, that fact didn't hit me as hard.  This series is probably better read as a collected edition for those that aren't into comic book 'floppies' like I am!

My Review Rating for this publication is NEAR MINT MINUS (NM-) 9.2 out of a possible 10.0 Comic Book Grading scale.

TODAY'S FEATURE - Blog #3340:

If the title of the today's featured publication sounds familiar to you, that could be that you've seen it here in my blog before.

My youngest son, Vinnie, blogged about the one-shot comic book, Sea Ghost #1 back in December, when both that comic book and this graphic novel came in the mail for possible review, from Nemo Publishing, LLC.

I don't make it a habit to review blog the same publication that either Vinnie, or my wife, Tina LoSasso, has already blogged on.  I usually save that for either joint blogs or separate blogs on comic book movies that we attend.

So I'm going to go straight to the publication that you can see the front cover of at the top right of this post.

Here's what the publisher has for the promo blurb:

"Fans of classic adventure, meet Capt'n Eli! Created in the tradition of Flash Gordon, Buck Rogers, and 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, The Undersea Adventures of Capt’n Eli is the story of a boy with extraordinary scientific abilities and unusual ties to the sea.

For all ages, this book is an imaginative blend of traditional comics storytelling and contemporary 3-D CGI. Written and illustrated by Jay Piscopo, The Undersea Adventures of Capt’n Eli graphic novel series is distributed nationally to comic shops, book stores, and libraries through Diamond Comic Distributors.

Capt'n Eli's origins are quite unique! He’s the namesake of real-life World War II veteran Eli Forsley who was also the inspiration for a line of hand-crafted sodas from Portland, Maine!"

So when starting to read this...(after reading the Sea Ghost #1 first), I found that what the publisher stated above was actually understated!

I found myself 'transported' back to my own childhood, during the 'Silver Age of Comics', because of the storyline, the ease of reading the story even though this is Volume 2, and I hadn't read Volume 1, and the great artwork!

First, the storyline:  Just like Stan Lee did during the 'Silver Age of Comics', Jay uses the 'splash page' to recap what has gone on before, making it 'reader friendly' and not leaving a new reader wondering what they have gotten into!

Also, just like Stan did in connecting the early comics titles he and Jack / Steve / Don & others produced, Jay ties in the Sea Ghost to this title, by showing the 'Origin' of Sea Ghost, starting on page 15!

The ease of reading is because this volume is for all ages.  I don't mean 'dumbed down' either for a younger reading audience, as I am definitely not 'young', and found this to be quite an enjoyable adventure story!  It kind of reminds me of the fun I had reading Jules Vernes classics and then seeing thosestories on the big screen! It would also be enjoyable to read to a much younger audience.

The artwork is 'current' and even a little 'futuristic', what with the 3-D CGI included.  Yet, although a few pages are a little dialogue heavy, the story and art mesh together very well.

Also included were pin-ups by Herb Trimpe, Joe Zierman, and Lauren Monardo.  I've blogged about Herb a few times before, and yes, he was part of the 'Silver Age of Comics', as well as the 'Bronze Age', and 'Copper Age' of Comics!

This second volume publishes Acts 4 through 8, and is continued in Volume 3. Which is understandable, as Jay includes a lot of characters in this series.

My Review Rating for this publication is NEAR MINT (NM) 9.4 out of a possible 10.0 Comic Book Grading scale.

Nemo Publishing, LLC has their marketing act 'together', as besides having their web site, CaptainEli.com, they also have separate Facebook Fan Pages for both Sea Ghost, and The Undersea Adventures of Capt'n Eli, which I suggest YOU 'Like' after reading this blog / and reviewed publication!

You can purchase this at several different venues.  Diamond Comics Distributors has this volume and the others in their catalogs, so your LCBS should be able to back order it if they don't have it in stock, or you can purchase it direct from Capt'n Eli's own online shop! Or you can purchase it via my Amazon link as seen here: The Undersea Adventures of Capt'n Eli Volume 2

My thanks to Tami Kennedy of Nemo Publishing, LLC, for following up with me on the status of a possible review blog for this volume!

TODAY'S FEATURE - Blog #3339:

(Vinnie) Today I will be reviewing Space Punks issue #2. I was visiting my dad this weekend, so I asked if I could do some review blogs for him.
When going through the box of comics and graphic novels to review, I came across this comic book title that I remembered doing a blog on, but for issue one. So, I read it and I enjoyed it, just as I did the first one.
Well, I looked in the comic, on the website, and on the SpacePunks FaceBook Fan Page, yet found nothing on what the creator wanted Space Punks issue two, to represent. So keep in mind when reading this review that I am not basing it from what the creator wanted it represented it as.
The art was it's cartoony self, so I found that enjoyable. The story was interesting, and I did feel the continuation of the first issue. The lettering was pretty plain, but I do think highly of the letters being bigger, in bold, and capitalized when a character is yelling.
Overall, I liked the art and the story, and the previously mentioned part of the lettering. Any previous reader of my writings in my dad's blog may know that I enjoy cartoony art.
Well, this comic, Space Punks issue #2, is full of this art style. The story was interesting, and I definitely felt the continuation in issues that I think most comics should do, but don't. As the lettering was prettyplain, I was happy that they spiced it up by doing the aforementioned to the text.
The only thing that I didn't like was that it was in black and white. The previous issue was in black and white as well, which was kind of disappointing. When I was reading the first issue, I thought that maybe because the comic was new, and they didn't know if it would be liked or not, that they didn't want to put a big endeavor, and if it was not liked, than for nothing.
But since issue two was still in black and white, than I don't know. I just hope that when I read issue three, it will be in color.
Overall, I did enjoy Space Punks #2, just they need to work on getting it in color, (IMO). I give this comic a Very Fine Plus (VF+), an 8.5 out of a 10.0 grade scale.
~Vinnie

(From Michael:) Here is the info needed for you to be able to find this comic book and the earlier issue #1 for possible purchase:
Retail Price $4.00   Page count: 24 pages

The web site to buy from is at: SpacePunks.com

Update!  Josep Blas has started a 'Facebook Fan Page' for himself as of January 21st of this year.  The earlier blog post on issue #1 of Space Punks didn't have that link, as it was posted a month before in December of 2010.

Note: Vinnie makes it to as many comic cons with me as he can. He collects the 'Amazing Spider-Man' comic book series, but is open to read other titles from publishers that print titles that are age appropriate for him.  He also has been attending 'behind the scenes' events, such as the one he blogged about ht here: Vinnie's Special 'Look at The Captain Rochester Party for the Artists' at the recent 2010 Comic-Con International: San Diego! He really had fun meeting and having dinner with Sergio Aragones, Bob Burden, Scott Shaw! and others there at this exclusive after hours Comic-Con Party in San Diego!

Thanks Vinnie, for guest blogging here today!

(Addendum to Vinnie's article - Please note that my youngest son, whom I believe is part of the 'target market' for this comic book series, is not a complete 'color snob', in that he only reads color comics.  However, as he points out in his review, he would have expected it to be in color by the 2nd issue, and was disappointed that it wasn't.  I find that several non-comics readers to whom I mention that I review comics are totally surprised that several of the comics that I receive to read and possibly review are with black & white interior pages... They are actually floored!  So comics creators, keep that in mind when you targeting your markets for sales!  I do realize the economics of b&w versus color, but that is where you need to figure 'marketing' into the costs of producing and actually selling your comics!)

TODAY'S FEATURE - Blog #3338:

(Vinnie) Today I will be reviewing Fraggle Rock Volume 2 Issue #1. I was over at my dad's house this past weekend, so I asked if there were any new publications to review that were age appropriate, and there were.
I found the Fraggle Rock, (pictured above), in the 'to be reviewed stack', so I asked if I could read and blog on this, and my dad said sure, as he had review blogged a different issue from the first volume!
Keep in mind that this is an anthology comic, so in this case, there are three stories, each by different people.
Fraggle Rock Vol. 2 - #1 (of 3)
(W) Grace Randolph, Jake Forbes and ose LeFavi (A) Chris Lie, Mark Simmons, Cory Godbey, and Katie Cook (Cover) David Petersen and Chris Lie (50/50 split)
Here is what the publisher has for the promo blurb:
Get ready to rock -- Fraggle style! Archaia and The Jim Henson Company follow up their highly acclaimed Fraggle Rock anthology series with a brand-new line of comics, featuring the antics of Gobo, Mokey, Wembley, Boober and Red! Worry is indeed for another day, as this new series features a stellar lineupof talent including: Grace Randolph (Muppet Peter Pan, Marvel Her-oes), Chris Lie (Return  to Labyrinth), Jake Forbes (Return to Labyrinth) and Ross Campbell (Wet Moon, Shadoweyes)! Featuring a cover from Mouse Guard's David Petersen and activity pages from fan-favorite Katie Cook.

Story 1: Wembley and the Great Dream-Capade
This story was my favorite, and by far the longest, covering over half of this book, and 20 pages long. The art was amazing as it wasn't too realistic, yet not too cartoony, which is what I think Fraggle Rock is supposed to represent. The coloring was vibrant and definitely no where close to dull. The story was understandable, didn't leave me questioning anything, told a great tale, and most of all, told a great moral.
Story 2: Boober and the Ghastly Stain
This story was my second favorite, and was the shortest, with only four pages. The art didn't seem as flowing or graceful as the first story. The style kept changing and it seemed too realistic at some times, and too cartoony at others. The story was building excitement as the story went on, but it didn't really do anything with it by the time it was over.
Story 3: Brave Sir Wembley
This story was my least favorite, and was second longest, with 6 pages. The art was different in a way I didn't like. I don't know how to explain what it was. The coloring was very dull and dark, which I felt was the exact opposite of what Fraggle Rock is supposed to be. Even most of the characters looked different, so I could only know who was who based on their shirts, as it was apparent they wear the same ones all the time. The story was kind of awkward, dark, and mysterious. I just didn't really care for it.
Overall, I thought this was okay, but some of the stories I rated higher than others.  Grading anthologies are hard to do!  I give this overall comic, Fraggle Rock Volume 2 Issue #1 a Very Fine / Very Fine Plus (VF/VF+), an 8.25 out of a 10.0 grade scale.
I would recommend this to kids 13 and under, or to the parents of kids 10 and under to read it with them.
~Vinnie!

TODAY'S FEATURE - Blog #3337:

(Vinnie) This is my first guest blog of the year 2011, and today I will be reviewing Mouse Guard: The Black Axe.

This was sent in for possible review by Archaia, and since I enjoyed the other Mouse Guard publication that I read and blogged about, which can be found here, I decided that I would also read and blog about this one. In addition, I do want to point out that this comics publication is issue # 1 of 6 in a series.

(And on a side note, I can't wait to see how much this new blog layout differs from the older blogs from last year!)

Mouse Guard: The Black Axe #1 (of 6) - W/A/Cover:  David Petersen

This is the promo from the publisher about this issue:

The Eisner Award-winning Mouse Guard returns with The Black Axe, a third volume to be told in six bi-monthly issues. Set in 1115, this prequel to Mouse Guard: Fall 1152 fulfills the promise the wise oldfur Celanawe made to Lieam the day his paw first touched the Black Axe: to tell the young warrior about the mouse who first wielded the deadly weapon. The arrival of distant kin takes Celanawe on an adventure that will carry him across the sea to uncharted waters and lands, all the while unraveling the legend of Farrer, the blacksmith who forged the mythic Black Axe.

Mouse Guard: The Black Axe was just as expected from the previous Mouse Guard publication I have read - fantastic!  I found the art to be sophisticated, yet 'cartoony'. I would almost call it dignified. The art had a nice approach, as it wasn't too realistic, nor too unbelievable. The font used in the story was calligriphic-looking, which definitely ties the art and story together. The story was thrilling, as the events slowly built the story and the suspense. Then, the climax of this story happened, and left you with some questions, which will most likely be answered in the next issue. This definitely keeps me, and the other readers I'm sure, waiting painfully for the next issue to come out to read it.

I will say that I am very impressed with this comic publication. It was amazing, as expected, and there was not much for me to dislike. To be honest, I even went through again to see if there was anything, like a spelling mistake or otherwise, that I could write about, but nothing. Just truly amazing!

Because I enjoyed this book, Mouse Guard: The Black Axe, so much, I think anyone would know that I would give this a high grade. So, to end this blog off, I give Mouse Guard The Black Axe #1, a Near Mint (NM), 9.4 out of a 10.0 grade scale.
