John Tartaglione

Would Have Been 88 Years Old This Month...

Celebrating The Birth of John Tartaglione

In January, 1921

Click Here to see our newly listed items for sale!  I wanted to mention John Tartaglione in our blog this month...  Because of his many contributions to comic books during the years he was active in the industry.

John was born either January 14th or 19th in 1921. I keep seeing both dates mentioned.

He passed away five years ago, on November 12th, 2003, but not before leaving us artwork that will be remembered for years to come.

Most articles on John mention his best seller, "The Life Of Pope John Paul II", where he was the penciller. If not that publication, then they cite his other well known comic book work, "Mother Theresa of Calcutta".

Myself, I saw his name in the credits of many Marvel Comics during the years, but mainly as an inker. He had a good run as inker on Dick Ayers' pencils on Sgt Fury & His Howling Commandos, issues #27-42, from 1966-1967.

John had actually started in the 1950's when credits weren't always shown in the publications. He was known as a good romance artist during that period.

So it wasn't any surprise that he did a great job on "Beach Blanket Bingo" comic book, which was in the Dell Comics 'Movie Classics' series that was published in 1965. I picked that one to showcase here because I am also an Annette Funicello fan.  But don't get my wife Tina started on that topic, LOL!

But then again, John also drew the Presidential Comics 'John F Kennedy' and 'Lyndon B Johnson'. This man was a versatile artist!

I kind of lost track of John's work for a while, as he was out of comic books doing a comic strip. Unfortunately I never met him at any of the Comic Cons I attended, so never got to thank him in person for the works that he created.

However, I am attempting to remedy this today by blogging this post in his honor. Thanks John for the memories!

Where Several Men And Women...

Have Gone Before!

As Documented In:

'Voyages Of Imagination'

The Star Trek Fiction Companion

By Jeff Ayers

Click Here to see our current listed Sci-Fi Comics, Magazines, Games and more including Star Trek, Star Wars, BSG etc.!  I grew up watching several of the original Star Trek (TOS) episodes during their first run...  I caught the episodes that I missed in the re-runs that followed of course!

During the years since 1966 I have also bought and sold multiple Star Trek comics by different publishers, including Gold Key, Marvel Comics, DC Comics, etc.

However I never really knew of the vast array of Star Trek Novels that were out there until obtaining this book!

The book is 'galactic' in size, because it truly is a resource on all of the Star Trek Novels up to 2006 when this book was first published.

My wife Tina thinks I'm a big fan of Star Trek, as I've re-watched the Star Trek Films with her, and we both are looking forward to the upcoming film.

However, it would take a Really Big Fan(atic) to have read all of the novels listed in this book!!

The author, Jeff Ayers, has the novels well organized into sections. The title, author, and a photo of the cover are first listed. Then a brief synopsis of what the novel covered. Plus, and this is a great insight for a fan, the thoughts of the novel's author at the time of publication!

I am recommending this book for Star Trek fans, no matter what level of fan(atic) you are... beginner, intermediate, or advanced!

At first look it is a little daunting to attempt to read the book, but this resource would be helpful to guide the reader into how the novels came about, what different novels there are for each TV show series, and what original fiction is out there for Trek fans.

There is so much continuity in the Star Trek Universe, that it can be overwhelming. This book is a great resource to at least figure out the novels that have printed.

(Please Note: A complimentary copy for this review was NOT provided by the publisher. We will have copies listed in our online store shortly.)

Not American Idol... It's

Small Press Idol!

And The Winner Is....

Click Here to see our current listed Comics, Magazines, Games and more!  ...To Be Determined!  That's right!  And since I am on the group mailing list for Ian Shires' SPA, (Self Publishers Association), I want to share this news with our blog readers who aren't on it!

Ian Spires, (pictured above), says that "the SPA is a loose gathering of creators (graphic novels, comics, etc.), publishers, and the fans of such, banded together to build better tools to make it more likely for good indy stuff to survive in today's marketplace".

It is actually Dimestore Productions, the parent enterprise, that is hosting Small Press Idol 2009, which is now in its' 6th year!

So what exactly is Small Press Idol?  I'll let their web site promo say it for them:

"Small Press Idol is the greatest amateur's contest in comics, mixing a bit of American Idol with a bit of The Apprentice, and a bunch of our own special social experiment elements. This contest is not for everyone...but it will be fun, and, for those that participate, it will challenge you to be the best you can be. If you survive round 1, your work WILL BE PUBLISHED! This year: We have national store distribution! It's our biggest year ever!"

For additional info, please see the rules of SPI for 2009, which have changed since the previous year at:

dimestoreproductions.com/content287.html#Guidelines

I was planning to run a different blog post today, but with the American Idol two hour premiere show for 2009 on later tonite, this was too good of a tie-in to NOT blog it today!

Also, for our long time blog readers that have been reading our blog posts on American Idol for the past two seasons, we have a change here ourselves this season... Sorry, but I have decided NOT to blog on American Idol tryouts, performances or result shows this Season.

Last Season we had many bloggers come in and read, and / or comment on Tina's and my scoring of the contestants, and it was a lot of fun. However it is just too much of my time to write notes and score the performances AND then blog about them the next day.  Our viewing and blogging habits have definitely changed since the WGA Strike affected our viewing season last year... there are other bloggers that are specializing in American Idol only, so we'll leave that to them this season!

For those that don't know about our blogging on American Idol the previous two seasons, we have over 200 previous archived blog posts that you can read! Click here for An Index to our blog posts on 'American Idol' and 'The Next Great American Band'!

(Please Note: Michael / Tina / Make It So Marketing Inc are not affialiated with, nor compensated by the publisher, the SPA, or the SPI. This blog post is for mention of the SPI only.)

Will This Be The End Of...

Gallant Girl?!

By Kat Cahill & Seth Damoose

Well... It Is The Last Issue Of The Mini-Series!

Click Here to see our current listed Comics, Magazines, Games and more!  That's right!  Issue #3 of Kat Cahill's new three issue mini-series will be out at your local comic book stores this week, December 14th, 2008!

A while back I became Facebook Friends with Kat Cahill, who then messaged me that she her debut issue of her comic book mini-series was released on November 12th, 2008!

And... now her mini-series is at the 3rd and final issue! Oh No!

In case you missed my earlier blog post about issue #1 or #2, here is the background for this mini-series:

The comic book mini-series is being published through Shadowline/Image Comics. Issue number two arrived December 4th, 2008 with the final issue of the three issue mini series arriving this January 14th, 2009.

So what is the mini-series about?

Well, the comic book follows a young woman named Renée Tempete.  She aspires to be the next 'Gallant Girl'...

'Gallant Girl' is actually a "legacy super-heroic identity" whose host is determined every ten years by pageant! Gallant Girl is the sole female member of the 'Fellowship of Freedom'.

I still have not read the entire series storyline yet, so I didn't want to list more about the mini-series premise other than that. However would you believe issue #1 is already sold out?!

But.... Here is where Kat Cahill's story becomes one that many would love to have happen to them:  “I Hate Gallant Girl” took an unusual route to the comics stands, in that it was part of a contest that was held by Shadowline.

Shadowline asked writers to submit their concepts for consideration, and from those thousands of entries, only five were voted on by the public!

Of the five, it was a different concept that was the actual 'winner' and that concept has already been published. However, "I Hate Gallant Girl", was such a favorite runner up that it too was selected for publication!

So, here's a comic book mini-series about a super-heroine that our blog readers might want to seek out either at their LCBS, or at their favorite online store... however the first issue is sold out by the publisher already so don't wait too long!

(Please Note: A complimentary copy for this review was NOT provided by the publisher.)

WebComics... The Book !

WebComics

The Book!

By Steven Withrow and John Barber!

This book's cover jumped out at me while Tina and I were out at a book store... Because it was on 'webcomics' but in print format!

The target market for this book is geared for those that are artists and want to know the tools and techniques for digital cartooning and get their works online.

It is also probably best for those who are in the generation that grew up with the world web web already in place. Because that is the audience "with no nostalgic affinity for the smell of paper, the turn of the page, the ritual of the cramped and difficult distribution / retail network" as stated by the author.

Those persons are probably best suited to initially take their creations and put them online after checking out what is involved to do so.

I have blogged before that my preference is with hard copies of comics, graphic novels, books etc. because of my own life style.  When I want to read, it is away from my laptop, because the laptop is my primary tool during the day or evening for 'work'.  Reading comics online is too much like 'work' for me to enjoy doing so for my 'pleasure' reading.

However, knowing that younger readers of this blog do enjoy this artform online, and not following it since the 'Stone Age' of Online Comics started back in 1993-1996, I am attempting to catch up with what has happened, what tools have been used, and a projection as to where this artform is going.

Heck, I've even been selling some my collections and went to DVDs because of space limitations!  So while I am not stuck in the past totally, I also haven't kept up with what was online to read.

Having new FaceBook Friends that are in webcomics is changing that for me. I am receiving more works to review via online links with comics or .pdf files with previews on published or soon to be published works.

So my thanks to those that have introduced me as to what is being done. For those that need to catch up like I did, this book is an excellent tool for that purpose.

There are many stories in this book by persons that have been doing webcomics for a while.  You as the reader, get to see what they did right (or wrong), and take your own artistical skills and apply them to the web.

The many drawings, pictures, and actual examples shown are well worth the cost of this book IMHO. There are also resource references to use. All this in one book. Even though it was printed in 2005, it seems to still be timely for an artist that wants to put their creations online.

If you do, feel free to email me or message me through FaceBook if you are a member!  I'd enjoy seeing your work for possible blog mention...

(Please Note: A complimentary copy for this review was NOT provided by the publisher. Matter of fact, we have a couple of copies of this book for sale listed!)
