The Tales Of The Last Boy On Earth!
Mood:  happy
Topic: Comic Book History

The LAST BOY On Earth!

Jack Kirby's KAMANDI

Kamandi was a DC Comics comic book character created by  artist and writer Jack Kirby in the early 1970's.

The majority of Kamandi's appearances to date occurred in the first comic book series Kamandi: The Last Boy on Earth, which was published from 1972 to 1978.

Kamandi was portayed as a young 'hero' in a Post-Apocalyptic future, which was set in a parallel Earth of the DC Universe's future.

It was set in a period after an event called "The Great Disaster". In that period humans are a persecuted minority in a world ruled by intelligent, highly evolved animals. If that sounds familiar to you, then remember that an earlier 1968 movie 'Planet of the Apes'  also portrayed an animal-ruled world!

Indeed, the cover of Kamandi #1, showing a demolished Statue of Liberty, was posibly inspired by a similar scene in the 'Planet of the Apes' movie just before it ended!

However, if you were to think that Jack Kirby was copying the movie, he actually had drawn a similiar theme in a comic book story in 'Alarming Tales' #1 back in September 1957.

In that comic book Jack drew a story entitled "The Last Enemy." In the story, he has a man traveling in time to the year 2514, where he finds that humans are extinct! That time traveler finds that the world is ruled by tribes of intelligent tigers, dogs, and rats!

Jack's drawings of these intelligent animals are very much similar to his later drawings in Kamandi 15 years later.

This series was one of the last that Jack Kirby wrote and drew for DC Comics before returning to Marvel Comics.

Quite often you can find high grade copies of these at comic book conventions. For those of you that can't make it to Comic Cons... We have an ongoing comic book convention here at Make It So Marketing, what with our daily blog posts and new listings of items for sale! Just click on the pic at the top left to see our listings!

Reaper, The TV Show...

...on The CW Network will be continuing with new shows, now that the WGA Strike is settled.

Reaper will have 8 more new episodes.

Tina first found out about this show at the 2007 SDCC - San Diego Comic Con, when Kevin Smith introduced it during a preview program.

Normally this would not be a show we would have watched, as it is not aimed for our age group... but we have found the early season's episodes to be funny, witty, and entertaining!

One of the reasons is the casting, and Ray Wise, pictured at top right, is perfect as the Devil!

Looking forward to more new episodes!

Thanks for reading our pop culture - comics - comic book blog post!

American Idol TV Show
Season 7  Week 3
Night 1 - The 'Boys'
03-04-08 Our Take
Theme Was "The Eighties"!

Last Night it was the 'boys' who performed... The Top 8 of them in a 60 minute show. These 8 guys are chasing 6 spots in the Top 12! Here are our 'scores', (based on 1-10, 10 being highest), on each performance with the 4th column showing the difference between my score and Tina's score. The 'boys' are listed in order of performance during the night, NOT by numerical score:
The 'Boys'

(No #)

Name of ContestantMichael's TakeScore DifferenceTina's Take
1Luke Menard   6.5   0.57.0
2

David Archuleta (pictured above)

   9.0   0.58.5
3

Danny Noriega

   6.0   1.07.0
4David Hernandez   6.5   1.07.5
5Michael Johns   7.0   1.58.5
6David Cook   9.0   0.59.5
7Jason Castro    7.0  1.58.5
8Chikezie    7.5 1.08.5

FYI, for those that followed our American Idol Blog Posts last season... you'll know that Tina and I usually don't agree on the contestants' performances until the final weeks.
Last night only two stood out for me... and while Tina stated that several were not good, she scored most of them higher than I did...

Tina's Take on the night:  "Luke Menard goes home, and so does Danny Noriega".  (Those two were her lowest scoring contestants.)

Michael's Take on the night: Once again Michael Johns has not repeated his performance that he did on 'Light My Fire'. Has he peaked too early? Chikezie moved up in performance points for me. Michael is still not playing 'favorites' although Tina has admitted to doing so.

What we do this early in the process is to vote for the highest one or two contestants per the score we gave them.  Michael voted for David Cook  and David Archuleta who both scored 9.0, while Tina voted for David Cook and Michael Johns!  Michael was part of a four-way tie with David Archuleta, Jason Castro, and Chikezie for her.

When the Top 24 starts getting down to the Top 12, then we'll start adding more than just a 'numerical' score. Due to space limitations on the eBay Blog format that we first post in,  we only have so much room to blog...

Well... that's it for 'The Boys'... Tonight are 'The Girls'.  Be back tomorrow when we blog about 'Our Take' on American Idol's Girls! FYI, we are on the West Coast by Legoland so there is a time zone difference in our viewing and blogging between our East Coast readers!

For those that missed our previous blog posts on this TV Show.... Please see the following link for our previous blog post. We have been blogging about Season 7 since the first week:

Just A Dozen Days...
Mood:  sad
Topic: TV Shows

...Before the DC5 (Dave Clark 5 Band) Were To...

...be inducted into the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame, the lead singer of the DC5, Mike Smith died of pneumonia at age 64.

Mike Smith was the lead singer, keyboard player and chief co-writer of the DC5, who during their heyday were the chief rivals of the Beatles!

The DC5 had 16 Top 30 Hits from 1964 - 1967 and 13 Record Albums during this same period! It is estimated that this group sold 100 million records!

During this period I was up in Kodiak Island, Alaska, and this band was bigger than the Stones, (quite possibly due to the quiet censorship on the airwaves...)

I was not aware of Mike Smith having a spinal cord injury in 2003, which had left him paralyzed below the rib cage... Mike had developed a chest infection, and now has passed away from pneumonia.

Once again the 'Music Industry'  has waited too long to 'validate' one of their top acts in the biz. The Dave Clark Five band was to be inducted into the Hall of Fame this March 10th, 2008. Sadly Mike will not be there to see this...

Beowulf The Movie DVD

We have blogged about seeing this movie back when it was first previewed at the July 2007 SDCC - San Diego Comic Con International.

For those that have not seen the movie at the theater or viewed the DVD yet... The Beowulf trailer links are still active at:

Beowulf Movie Trailer

Here Are Tina's Thoughts on the movie preview program she attended while at the July 2007 San Diego Comic Con on the movie:

Neil Gaiman and director Roger Avery gave Comic Con fans a first look at a 2-D trailer for the upcoming movie 'Beowulf'.

The digitally enhanced live action is their attempt to 'tell the oldest story in the English language', said Gaiman, 'with the technology we have today'.

To me it was a little creepy and alienating, but maybe Angelina Jolie in 2-D just creeps me out...

Jolie's part of what Gaiman calls his 'bull---- casting'. Gaiman continues with 'You know the game we all play, who would you cast for...??'

Holed up in Mexico writing the screenplay and drinking too much beer Gaiman and Avery speculated on their dream cast; Angelina Jolie, Anthony Hopkins, John Malkovich and Crispen Glover.  They were amazed when everyone said yes!

Well, in November we'll see if the the movie is a dream or a nightmare...

Michael says: Today you can now view this movie on DVD, plus see the behind the scenes on the Bonus Features! For me, the Bonus Features were actually better than the movie! I watched the Bonuses first, then the Film, and have a better appreciation of what was made. This is definitely NOT family viewing, and the gruesome scenes are not for everyone.

You can have your own keepsake of the movie by checking out the movie adaptation in comic book format.  Just click on the SDCC Comic Con comic book Exclusive at the middle left column for a copy!

Thanks for reading this pop culture - comics - comic book blog post!
