CINEFANTASTIQUE !
Mood:  a-ok
Topic: Comic Book Movies

CINEFANTASTIQUE !

Cinefantastique was a magazine featuring horror, fantasy, and science fiction films with in depth articles and photos within its pages.

The magazine originally saw print as a mimeographed fanzine in 1967. Later it relaunched as a glossy, offset quarterly magazine in 1970 by publisher/editor Frederick S. Clarke. (Currently we have one copy of this hard to find OOP collector's item for sale!).

The magazine originally intended to be a serious review journal of the film genres.  It immediately set the standard for such an enterprise.

The magazine's competitors at the time were 'Famous Monsters of Filmland' and 'The Monster Times' both of which were good magazines, but were not high profile magazines.

Cinefantastique got rave reviews from the critics due to its' using a slick paper stock and using many full color film stills within its interior pages.

Cinefantastique's approach to printing articles and reviews used a near-scholarly approach and didn't speak down to the readers, similar to what Stan Lee did when starting the Marvel Age of Comics.

Cinefantastique quickly became known for its jam-packed "retrospective" articles. When it saw it circulation increase, Cinefantastique began producing huge 'double sized issues' which would have a theme, such as the 'Making Of' Star Wars or the 'Making Of' the Black Hole, etc.

The magazine has recently gone through a re-organzation and is now called 'CFQ'.

For in depth articles on some of the best pop culture movie films OR TV shows, just click on the 'X-Files' cover on the top right to see what issues of Cinefantastiquewe we have in stock! We have about three dozen to list at this time...

Ghost Rider DVD Bonus Features Reviewed
Mood:  d'oh

Ghost Rider DVD

Bonus Features Reviewed!

As Promised I am posting about the 2 Disc Ghost Rider DVD that was just released!

The 2nd Disc is the one with the Bonus Features...
One of the Features is called: Spirit of Vengeance, The Making of Ghost Rider:
Part 1: This had some interesting interviews and some background history.
For those that did not know, this movie was supposed to be a 'supernatural western' movie, based on the 1950-1970's comic book version.  That definitely has some of the fans upset, as they were expecting a more grim and gritty 1990's - 2000's Ghost Rider comic book version.
Johnny Blaze's bike was patterned after the movie 'Easy Rider' where Peter Fonda played 'Captain America'. Peter was also in this Ghost Rider movie, so the bike was intentionally styled after the one he rode in Easy Rider!
The coats the fallen angels wear were patterned after the coats worn by the gunslingers in 'Once Upon A Time In the West'!
Part 2:  Some interesting background on the making of the movie... in Australia. This I found to be informative and a little entertaining.  However it was seeing Eva Mendes, and Nic Cage doing their scenes that kept my interest.
Part 3:  Could have done without this part... very technical, and overlong in running time. After the first few minutes, I didn't see anything valuable so fast forwarded thru some of it....
Next part of the Bonus Features was the Comic Book Origin featurettes:
1970's - actually started by going back to the 1950's where there was a 'Ghost Rider' from M.E. Comics, which got cancelled around the time of the Comics Code Authority coming into being.  Dick Ayers was the artist on this version.  Then in 1968 the Ghost Rider name was taken by Marvel Comics when Stan Lee directed Roy Thomas to have a comic written about this Ghost Rider who was also a western character. Roy had Gary Friedrich write the story and Dick Ayers was there to draw it! Westerns had become passe by then, so this Ghost Rider version lasted a short while only....
1980's - Roy Thomas was asked about having a motorcycle rider as a villain, which he had done in a Daredevil comic, with the villain called 'Stunt-Master'.  However Roy decided that the concept should be a superhero instead of a villain, and thus the new Ghost Rider was born!  Roy had been a fan of Elvis Presley since 1956 when Elvis sang Heartbreak Hotel, and remembered how hot Elvis looked in his leather outfit in the '68 'Comeback Special'. Thus the Ghost Rider had a look, which Mike Ploog the artist added to with a flaming skull head.  Stan Lee called Roy and asked that the character's name be 'Johnny Blaze', which sounded a lot like 'Johnny Storm' the Human Torch who was a member of the Fantastic Four!  Mike Ploog borrowed some concepts from Evel Knievel and the comic book lasted for several years!
1990's - This period was covered also. There was a new Ghost Rider, named Danny Ketch.  I had read just a few of these comics, as Marvel expanded its' comic line by almost fourfold during this period, and I had cut back on purchases..... This period was sufficiently covered in the DVD for those who are fans of this period of the Ghost Rider.
2000's - This period was additionally covered, and had a good interview with the Kubert Family, (Joe, Adam and Andy), who were involved in this period.  The Ghost Rider is now a more supernatural book, and a lot more grim and gritty. The editor-in-chief Joe Quesada explains why this is the case. Fans of this period would understandably not be over enthusiastic about the movie being about the earlier Johnny Blaze period.
That is about it on the Bonus Features. If you are a fan of the Ghost Rider AND interested in his history the Origin Featurettes are worth the extra money.

If you are disappointed in the movie because it is not the Ghost Rider you were expecting, then it probably would not behoove you to purchase this DVD.
The DVD is being distributed as an 'Extended Cut' DVD, where scenes deleted from the movie are added!  It is NOT a 'Director's Cut'. The director, Mark Steven Johnson, believes the released theatrical version is a better paced movie, but this one has additional background material added.
We reviewed this movie in an earlier blog post after it was released.

The movie opened February 16th, 2007, and set a new record for the 4 day Presidents' Day Weekend with $52 million dollars in ticket sales on 3,619 screens!
By the way, we currently have 234 DVDs reviewed, plus 15 VHS, 7 CDs, and 62 books in our eBay Reviews Section! Almost all of them are pop culture flicks or books, except for the occasional 'chick flick' that Tina slips in our DVD stack!!
Thanks for taking the time to read this!  Also, you can click on the pictures to the right for Ghost Rider Comics we have available for sale for more background on the Ghost Rider, or for other comic book genres!

8,000 Visitors To Our Blog !

8,000 Visitors To Our Blog Since July 15, 2006 !

Site Meter

This Blog Was Started June 7th 2006 shortly after eBay announced it was starting blogs!

Our first blog post was about seeing the last of the X-Men movies trilogy, X-Men III, and that we were listing several X-Men comics for sale because of the good review we gave the movie and interest in anything X-Men was growing...
Our second blog post came the next day, June 8th, where we proudly stated that we had hit the 5,000 mark of active listings in our eBay Featured Store!  (The next month we were at the San Diego Comic Con when eBay announced that they were raising store listings insertion fees from 2 cents to 5 or 10 cents in August... due to that increase we have kept approximately 2,000 active and expired listings since then in our eBay Featured Store, PLUS keeping approx 5,000 in our own web site!)

The earliest blog posts were simple text with a small pic or two.  Having been the publisher of a Family Genealogical Newsletter for 15 years, I wanted to make this blog post a little fancier and started adding graphics and links to previous blog posts for newcomers to the blog.  I have since been adding graphic links at the bottom of the main post as eBay is archiving the blogs only in html script.
When Tina bought the domain name www.ComicBookCollectorsBlog.com to distribute our blog posts even further than the eBay community, I proceeded to add each post to both the eBay Blog & Our Own Blog. Additionally I have submitted both to different Blog Directories for exposure outside the eBay community.

Today we get several visitors each day, with a few that add their comment to our blog posts. For non-ebayers, our domain name web site blog is the place to post your comment if you don't want to join eBay!
We want to thank YOU for checking out this blog post today, and appreciate all of YOU who have checked out our posts in the past months since July 15th 2006 when we added on a stats meter !

Why To San Diego Of Course !

Scores of Superheroes, Including:

Spider-Manthe Fantastic FourBatmanSuperman,  Wonder WomanIsis,  Mister Terrific, the Phantom, Daredevil, Doctor Strange, Nick Fury, Captain America, the Incredible Hulk, She-Hulk, Ant-Man, Green Lantern, Marvel Boy, the Champions, Iron Man, X-Men, X-Factor, Venus, the Flash, Captain Nice,  and many others Vacation in Sunny San Diego At the Comic-Con International (SDCC) Which This Year Will Run From July 26th - 29th at the San Diego Convention Center !

Comic-Con International, most commonly known as The Comic-Con or the San Diego Comic-Con, (SDCC) is an annual fan convention held in San Diego, California.  It first was named the 'Golden State Comic Book Convention' and became known later as the 'San Diego Comic Book Convention'.

It was started in 1970 by Shel Dorf and a group of San Diegans. Today it is traditionally a four-day event (Thursday through Sunday) held during the summer in San Diego, California, at the San Diego Convention Center.  In recent years the Con has held a 'Preview Night' on the Wednesday night before opening day for members with four day badges only.

Originally a showcase for comic books, the convention has expanded over the years to include a larger range of pop culture, including science fiction, fantasy animation/anime, manga, toys, collectible card games, video games, television shows previews, and movies trailers screenings.

This convention is the largest of its kind in the United States, last year filling to capacity the San Diego Convention Center with 125,000 attendees. Indeed on Saturday the Con had to stop allowing new one day ticket sales to attendees for a few hours due to the fire marshall's request.

Every year there are awards shows, a masquerade, art auctions, and lots more! Plus superheroes (and villains) stroll the aisles daily !

We will be buying comics at the Con, but will not have a booth to sell as we currently have thousands of comics listed in our eBay Featured Store .

Thanks for viewing this comic book blog post.... and feel free to comment!
