The Comic Reader

The Comic Reader

Was a Magazine that was first started by two men who have gone on to make their names well known  in the comic book industry!

Paul Kupperberg was a former editor for DC Comics.  He has also been a writer of comic books and newspaper strips.

Paul Levitz is currently the President of DC Comics, (Batman / Superman / Wonder Woman etc.), and responsible for that comics line.

Both Pauls ran the comics fanzine 'The Comic Reader' (1971-1973) and also the fanzine 'Etcetera' (1972-1973) before moving into the comic book industry itself, while the magazines kept going for a long run.

The issue to the top right is an example of a later issue.  The cover is by Sergio Aragones, of 'Groo' fame and also the fastest artist at the annual SDCC's 'Quick Draw' contest.

Amazing Heroes Magazine

AMAZING HEROES

Was A Long Running Magazine About  Amazing Comic Book Heroes!

We just finished listing several in our eBay Featured Store and wanted to tell you a little bit about the history of the magazine...

Amazing Heroes was another fine magazine about the comic book industry which was published by the Fantagraphics Books company from 1981 to 1992.

It was originally published bi-weekly for many years, and then in 1989 it went on a  monthly basis.

Amazing Heroes magazine ran for 203 issues, which was amazing in itself as a lot of competitors bit the dust during that run!

The first twelve issues were magazine sized, then the rest of issues were comic book sized.

Amazing Heroes lasted so long in my opinion  because it took a somewhat lighter editorial tone to its review of comic books. It seemed to come from a fan's point of view.  It was a fun read while it lasted!

Additionally there would be special features like comic book hero histories articles that were written which would help new fans find out about a hero's past.

Regular features included comic book industry news, comics creator interviews, and of course reviews on new products.

One of the most anticipated highlights during the years in print were the 'Swimsuit Special  Editions' where various comic book artists would submit illustrated drawings  of characters  in bikinis and other beach apparel!

Lastly, the Amazing Heroes Preview Special would appear twice a year, and would present  previews of all comic books scheduled to appear over the next several months. Of course with such a large scope those issues would be over-sized issues and quite often were squarebound.

Comics Interview Magazine

COMICS INTERVIEW

We just listed several Comics Interview magazines in our eBay Featured Store!

This highly regarded magazine about comics creators was edited and published by David Anthony Kraft.

The magazine lasted many years and was an informative in-depth magazine with multiple articles in each and every issue.

Some issues would have a theme such as the one to the right, where the theme was on 'The Punisher'.

Other issues would be on Star Trek, major Marvel Comics super-heroes, major DC Comics superheroes, or independent comics creators.

Some of my favorite articles would be on the comic book originators from the 1930's to 1960's. Those were fun reads!

Just click on the magazine cover on the top right to see what issues of 'Comics Interview' we currently have in stock!

Star Trek Fan Club Magazines

Star Trek Fan Club

We listed some Star Trek Fan Club magazines alongside our Star Trek Comics & Mags!

Star Trek has had several comic book series published through the years.

Marvel Comics, DC Comics, Malibu Comics, etc. have added greatly to the lore of the Star Trek Universe.

Of course there have been paperback and hardcover novels in printed form.

The Star Trek Club magazines are not that easy to find in SoCal where we are, probably because the TV Shows and the Films have several actors/actresses that are in demand for collectibles.

The issue to the top right is an example of that collectability.  Kim Cattrall starred in an early Star Trek Film, and went on to star in the TV series 'Sex and the City', thus making this magazine issue collectible for both Star Trek Fans & Sex and the City fans.

Just click on the magazine cover on the top right to see what Star Trek media items we currently have in stock!

Secret Agent Man

Another Secret Agent Man!

No, Not James Bond...

No, Not Maxwell Smart...but

David Hasselhoff as....

Nick Fury,  Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. !

Secret Agents were very big in the 1960's. Only one has continued on into this time period, and he has been re-invented recently, James Bond.

Well this blog post isn't about James Bond, but rather it is about Nick Fury, Agent of SHIELD in the 1997 TV Movie,.

This movie was made for TV before Marvel Comics started to make it big with Theatrical Movies of their super-heroes like Spider-Man, X-Men, Fantastic Four, etc.

In my opinion this TV movie definitely was not up to par with the above named theatrical movies.

David Hasselhoff tried to portray Nick Fury in the movie, but he just didn't make it for me, too much of a caricature for me...

Lisa Rinna was the 'Contessa', but she didn't come across either for me. Come to think of it... none of the actors really portrayed the characters that have a long history in the comic books.

Unfortunately there was too much background info to give to the viewer all at once, and it just wasn't done right.  This is a poor example of a comic book movie, sad to say.

For those interested in 'Strange Tales' and 'Nick Fury' Marvel comic books, from which this Nick Fury TV Movie is derived, we have several listed in both our eBay Featured Store.

Thanks for reading this pop culture / comic books blog post, and feel free to post your comment!
