Mood:  a-ok
Topic: Comic Book History

ERB are the initials for....

... Edgar Rice Burroughs (September 1, 1875March 19, 1950) who was a famous American author.
He was best known for his creation of the jungle hero Tarzan, although he also produced works in many genres.
Those other works were the John Carters of Mars series, the Pellucidar series, the Venus series, the Caspak series, and the Moon series!
There have been several fanzines that elaborate further on ERB's works, among them ERB-dom, ERBania, Tarzine and others.
We have listed a few from my personal library for those that are into ERB's works, and would like to know more about the man and/or his works of fiction. Just click on the photo of Tarzan to the right for the listings.

For those interested in 'Tarzan' comics, we have several from those comic books series in our eBay Featured Comic Book Store also!

Alter Ego Is A Magazine Edited by Roy Thomas

... Who will be a Special Guest at the upcoming San Diego Comic Con International  (SDCC) July 26-29, 2007 !

Alter Ego was one of the earliest superhero comics fanzines, first founded in 1961 by Jerry Bails. Roy Thomas later became editor before moving into the comics industry itself. The first volume of Alter Ego ran for 11 issues.

In 1998 Alter Ego was revived, with Roy being the editor again. It appeared as a flip-book to 'Comic Book Artist' magazine for the first 5 issues (which is now referred to being 'volume 2').

Then in 1999, it became the slick covered stand-alone magazine ('volume 3'), which is still being published by TwoMorrows Publishing.

I first met Roy at an earlier SDCC, where pictured to the right, he signed several Fantastic Four Comics that he was the writer on, for my personal collection. He was fun to talk with, and I enjoyed meeting him in person.

For those interested in comic books and magazines that Roy wrote, both for Marvel, DC Comics, and TwoMorrows , please check out our eBay Featured Store

'Our Take' On the New Fantastic Four Movie !
Mood:  a-ok

This Is What Galactus Really Looks Like!

'Our Take' On FF 2:

Rise of the Silver Surfer ! !

"Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer" caught the nationwide wave of moviegoers  to the No. 1 spot at the weekend box office.

Before we get to 'Our Take' on the movie itself, I wanted to show those that were disappointed in the 'clouds' being the threat called 'Galactus' in the movie the 'real' Galactus.

To the left is the cover of issue #75 of the Fantastic Four comic book. The Silver Surfer is at the bottom right of the cover.  Above him is the giant head of 'Galactus' who was personified as being a god-like being in the comics.   Galactus was a few hundred feet tall and not a 'cloud-like' being in the comics. Sometimes the producers or directors or writers of the movie just don't get it right!

    And Now....

Our Take On the New FF 2 Movie !

That's right, we took it in this past Sunday for our Father's Day outing !!

Here's our thoughts on the movie with a  SPOILER WARNING!!!!!!!!!!

If You have NOT yet seen the movie & Don't Want to Know the Plot or Ending, DON'T READ BELOW THIS LINE ! :

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Topic

Vinnie's ( pre-teen comic fan ) thoughts

Tina 's- mainstream viewer thoughts

Michael's  - Comic Book Geek from 1960's thoughts

Best  Movie Scene

Attack on top of Baxter Building during Wedding!

Sue Storm & the Silver Surfer meeting and talking in the forest.

The multiple times the Thing & the Torch banter and bicker with each other... I can't get enough of this. Director Tim Story's best angle!

Worst Scene

Galactus portrayed as a 'cloud' being

Johnny Storm tries to 'pick up' the Army girl.

Galactus not personified, but portrayed as a 'cloud being'

Best Battle Scene in Movie

Attack on the rooftop during the wedding of Reed & Sue at the beginning.

Torch follows the Surfer the first in the movie, through the tunnels, around and through buildings etc.

The FF versus the Silver Surfer in the Fantasti-Car at the Wall of China. The Fantasti-Car then splits up into 3 sections. This was cool looking Fantasti-Car even though I love the cover of FF #3 with the original 'flying bathtub' look of the car.

Favorite Line In Movie

(Didn't Have One)

Sue says to Reed, "I'm so hot for you', and Johnny puts his arm on Reed and says 'me too!"

So many good linesactually!  I also like the 'so hot for you' lines, and also the security person telling Stan Lee that he is not on the wedding guest list!

Overall Grade

A  He really liked this movie!

A-   She enjoyed the Silver Surfer portrayal.

A-    The Thing and the Torch were portrayed right on again!  Reed was a little more human this time and more super-heroic. Sue just still isn't right for me. The Silver Surfer rocks!  Galactus...(censored)... well I can't print here what I really think, but it isn't good!

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The above are our thoughts on this new Fantastic Four  comic book Film!

Local Reactions To The Movie!

Fantastic Four 2:

Rise of the Silver Surfer!

( According to Informal Poll taken 06-18-07 in San Diego North County )

Made my rounds this afternoon, the local USPS office for shipping, the BlockBuster video store for returns, local supermarket and the bank for business.

The newly released "Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer" comic book movie definitely was watched here in the North County San Diego area this past weekend, as all those that know me had their opinions on the movie!

For those wondering, the newest FF movie was the No. 1 seen movie at this past weekend's box office, according to Reuters.

There was an outcry that there was not enough of the Silver Surfer being seen onscreen, even though Roeper, of Ebert & Roeper thought that the Surfer spoke too much!  When I brought that to the attention of one of the people telling me about lack of the Surfer on the screen, he asked me if Roeper was watching the same movie that we did??!! LOL....

Another person wondered why the movie was called Rise of the Silver Surfer, when the Surfer was not seen very much at all... I had no explanation for that one!  Another person enjoyed the voice of the Surfer and would have enjoyed more of a speaking part for the Surfer.

There seemed to be a consensus that the 'cloud' (who was supposed to be Galactus) didn't come over right.  What kind of 'bad guy' was that I was asked. I explained that the Galactus wasn't personified in this movie, that actually he was cast a giant being in the comics, close to god-like.  The non-comic book viewers just didn't understand what the cloud was all about and felt let down by this ending...

The majority of viewers had seen the first FF movie, and felt this was not as 'comic-booky' as the first one was with the big battle of the FF versus Doctor Doom at the end of the first movie.

I was asked what I thought of the movie, and in the brief time in line at each of the above named facilities I told them what I thought, and told them to check out our blog later today.

Which reminds me.... I gotta do the blog post on 'Our Take' of the movie!

LOL,

Michael

Rise Of The Silver Surfer!

Of Course THE THING Is In It Too!

Fantastic Four 2:

Rise of the Silver Surfer

Is #1  At The Box Office! !

 ( According to Reuters 06-18-07 )

The newly released "Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer" comic book movie caught the nationwide wave of moviegoers to the No. 1 spot at this past weekend's box office, according to studio estimates.

This sequel to the "Fantastic Four" movie outperformed its predecessor, by bringing in an estimated $57.4 million for its distributor, 20th Century Fox.

This is compared to July 2005, when in its first three days, "Fantastic Four" grossed $56 million in ticket sales for 20th Century Fox, which is a unit of News Corp..

"We did fantastically, pun intended," Aronson of 20th Century Fox said. "The silver lining is that it outperformed the first one. It worked from Fairbanks to Fort Lauderdale and everywhere in between. It worked in big cities. It worked in small towns."

Fairbanks is in Alaska and Fort Lauderdale is in southeast Florida, spanning most of the North American market where the movie was shown on 3,959 screens that averaged $15,000 per location.

So what was the competition that the FF movie had this weekend?  Well, #2 was Oceans 13 with $19.1 million, #3 was Knocked Up with $14.5 million, #4 was Pirates 3 with $12 million & #5 was Surf's Up with $9.3 million.

I will be posting 'Our Take' on this movie later on today....

Michael
