Challengers of the Unknown - 50th Anniversary !
Mood:  celebratory
Topic: Comic Book History

'Challengers Of The Unknown'

50 th ANNIVERSARY

1957 - 2007

Before Jack Kirby co-created the Fantastic Four with Stan Lee, he was involved in the creation of 'The Challengers of the Unknown' for DC Comics.

The Challengers were a quartet of non-super powered adventurers who explored paranormal occurrences and faced fantastic menaces such as the one pictured on the comic book cover to the right.

The Challengers debuted in DC's Showcase #6 which was published in February 1957, shortly after The Flash's Revival in issue #4.

The four adventurers were  Kyle "Ace" Morgan, Matthew "Red" Ryan, Leslie "Rocky" Davis, and Walter Mark "Prof" Haley. After they miraculously survived a plane crash unscathed, they concluded that since they were "living on borrowed time", they would team up together to become the Challengers of the Unknown.

At this time in the 1957 superheroes had not yet had their revival, other than Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman and now the Flash being published by DC Comics.

Thus the Challengers helped pave the way for the 1960s superhero groups! Indeed, Jack Kirby's next major continuing series, The Fantastic Four for what became Marvel Comics, was essentially the Challengers as a superhero family, complete with a similar origin!

Both teams, although created for different publishers, were quartets who came together after a crash landing!  Plus, if you get a chance, take a look at  Challengers of the Unknown #3 where Rocky was shot into space and returned with several powers that the FF later acquired!

The Challengers series continued in Showcase for three more appearances, issues #7, 11, & 12, and then recieved its' own title.  After 12 issues in total, Jack Kirby went on to Marvel where he drew the famous monster comics before the Fantastic Four were born!

CHALLENGERS OF THE UNKNOWN Comics For Sale Here!

The 'Challengers of the Unknown' title continued through issue #75 (Aug.-Sept. 1970).  After that it had intermittent reprint and revival issues from 1973-78.  The Jack Kirby issues are among the most collectible of the series.

Model Cathy Christian

Avengelyne Was A Good Angel Among Bad Things in the Mid 1990's !

Avengelyne was a comic book character that was co-created by Rob Liefeld and Cathy Christian.

Cathy wore the costume at Comic-Cons including the SDCC and the LA Sci-Fi And Comic Book Con that I saw her at with my older sons in the mid 1990's.

The comic book character was first published in 1995 by Maximum Press. She had a 3 issue mini-series and a 14 issue regular series, plus other mini-series.

However, by the end of the speculative 1990's, Avengelyne Comics had a one-shot issue at Awesome Entertainment and the series had a short run at Avatar Press.

For those that never knew the character, Avengelyne was an angel who fought the forces of evil and often found herself face-to-face with demons, monsters, and other bad things on Earth!

The original character design for Avengelyne was based on the likeness of former 'Vampirella' model Cathy Christian. She graced many covers of the Avengelyne comics as well as attending conventions!

Buck Rogers In The 25th Century !

'Buck Rogers In the 25th Century '

Are Just Some of the comic books we are looking to find at the SDCC in July!

The comic book series was based on the TV Show that has been largely overlooked by collectors.

There have been a few attempts to get Buck Rogers back in mainstream media recently.

The 'Buck Rogers in the 25th Century' I am referring to was an American motion picture produced by Universal Studios and released in 1979.

It was also the title of a television series based upon that film that was aired by NBC for two seasons between 1979 and 1981.

Of course the film and TV series were based upon the Buck Rogers character that had been featured in comic strips since the 1920's.

The film was released after the huge success of 'Star Wars', and the TV show was made to capitalize on the new sci-fi craze (similiar to Battlestar Galactica appearing on TV) !

The TV series starred Gil Gerard as Buck, and Erin Gray as Colonel Wilma Deering.  The issues that feature Erin Gray don't last long when we have those for sale!
