Don't Trust A Black Scorpion!

Most Recent Reviews!

As part of our eBay Blogs we are watching all the movies based on comic books or comic strips etc to see if they are entertaining or even watchable....

This is a terrible 'B Movie' !! I continued to watch it till the end for our blog report, but Tina pulled out her book and read that until the end of the movie. Every so often she would make a wisecrack about a scene that had just ended in her 'Jersey Girl' way of talking.

Tina had liked Joan Severance in her role on the TV Show 'Wiseguy'. She thought that this movie wasted her talents! I informed her that Joan had gone on to do a sequel as Roger Corman has boasted that none of his movies had ever lost money so someone must have liked the first movie!!

Tina said that was because none of the actors could act in this movie and that Roger saved a lot of money by hiring these actors! I would tend to agree with that statement!

The movie does feature a sexy Joan Severance in the lead role of the Black Scorpion. The Black Scorpion is based on a comic book heroine. I have not read any of the Black Scorpion comics, and after this film.... well they won't be on the top of my list to find at the SDCC later this month!!

This film was advertised to be a Roger Corman erotic thriller. (The Movie is rated 'R'.)

It was not erotic, basically it was 'gratious sex scenes' and definitely not a thriller. There was no suspense at all.

Funny thing is, I could see scenes in this movie that looked so similar in the later film 'Catwoman' starring Halle Berry. Especially between Black Scorpion and her alter ego's boyfriend when Black Scorpion seduces the boyfriend. However Catwoman (Halle Berry) was much better at that!

Also the movie is stated to be about "a sexy undercover cop turns into a one-woman vigilante squad--Black Scorpion--following the murder of her father".

Well, Joan is sexy looking and the Black Scorpion costume accentuates her great looks, a little too much for Tina!

The fight scenes are not realistic, of course this is a mid 1990's film, and a Roger Corman film, so that can be understood.

I found the transformation of Darcy's (the alter ego of Black Scorpion) orange Corvette into the Scorpion-mobile to be cool, but Tina thought it was laughable. There were some other scenes in this movie that reminded Tina of the hoky-ness of the 1966 Batman TV series. However this movie was not made for laughs so it missed the mark with Tina!

One last point, that of the villain. His origin was OK, but the costume was so bad... it was so bad it reminded me how bad the Green Goblin's costume was in the Spider-Man I movie.

Due to the gratitous sex scenes, the poor plotline, and the unrealistic fight scenes we will not be viewing the sequel to this movie. Tina refuses!!

LOL, Michael (and Tina)

THIS Was The One !

THIS WAS THE ONE!

The Comic Book In The Right Column Is What Started Me As A Collector....

... of comic books.... Journey Into Mystery #72 from Atlas Comics. (Atlas evolved into what we know as Marvel Comics today, you know, Spider-Man, X-Men etc.)

Before I was given this comic book, all I had been reading were 'funnybooks' with an occasional National (Superman) comic book thrown in.

Journey Into Mystery #72 was cover dated September 1961, which would have made me nine years old.  The title had started with issue #1 in June of 1952, which would have been a month older than I was.

What made this one issue stand out enough to make me start collecting comic books???

It was the artwork that did it for me. It was when I first truly realized that it was real people that drew these comics, in this case they were Jack Kirby and Dick Ayers, who signed their work 'Kirby/Ayers'.

Before this comic, all that I was aware of were the 'cookie cutter' artwork in funnybooks of Chilly Willy, Woody Woodpecker, Mickey Mouse, etc.  The art from one artist to another was almost indistinguishable, and no one signed their names to the artwork...   However the artwork of this Journey Into Mystery was so far different from what I was used to, that I immediately looked for more by the Kirby/Ayers team and kept the book in better shape!

I didn't have too long to wait... as Kirby drew Fantastic Four #1 for the November 1961 cover date, which I picked up after seeing Fantastic Four #3 from March 1962 where the FF wore costumes for the first time!

It was unusual that this comic was given to me as it was a 'monster' comic, which probably would have been thought to give me 'nightmares', but I am glad that it was given to me and that it started my lifelong collecting bug of collecting comics!!!

I was fortunate to meet Jack Kirby at the SDCC before he passed away, and to have met Dick Ayers at Wonder-Con and the SDCC a few times through the years.  They were definitely the great guys I thought them to be when I was a kid!!  Thanks Jack & Dick for the memories !!

For those interested in seeing more Jack Kirby comics, we have several in our eBay Featured Store
