Escapes Alive From The...

Vault of Evil!

This was a 1970's HoRRoR / Monster comic book series from Marvel Comics with twenty-three issues in total for the series run.

The series ran from February 1973 to November 1975 and is but one of several reprint HoRRoR and MoNSter comics that Marvel published after the Comics Code Authority, (CCA), loosened its' stringent rules and policies.

The comics were originally published at 20 cents cover price, and moving to 25 cents cover price by the end of its' print run.

Several of the stories reprinted were from pre-Marvel Comics days, when the company was known as Atlas Comics. The comics today range in price from $12.00 to $60 in Near Mint (NM 9.4) unslabbed 'raw' grade.

The 3rd party graded (CGC) comic to the top left is issue #1 and in NM- 9.2 grade, has averaged $43.00 during the last 12 months in value, and had hit a high of $93.00 at one time.

Vault of Evil was started during the time that Marvel Comics was flooding the newstands with titles, trying to increase its' market share!

The HoRRoR / MoNSter genre increased in volume of sales for Marvel and also DC Comics during the early 1970's. Even Dell Comics, with their 'Dell Comics Are Good Comics' motto, were printing HoRRoR comics!

For those interested in checking out HoRRoR and MoNSter comics we have several unslabbed and CGC graded comics listed in our eBay Featured Comic Books Store !

PLEASE NOTE: The following is a repost of our July 8th, 2007 blog post. Since that time the eBay techs have changed the blog format so much that our original blog post is near un-readable. Since there have been several bloggers viewing the archived post this week, I am revising the format and re-posting on the right column of this blog post:

Or

 Even Rent

 This One!

As part of our eBay Blogs we are watching all the movies based on comic books or comic strips etc to see if they are entertaining or even watchable....

This is a terrible 'B Movie' !!  I continued to watch it till the end for our blog report, but Tina pulled out her book and read that until the end of the movie. Every so often she would make a wisecrack about a scene that had just ended in her 'Jersey Girl' way of talking.

Tina had liked Joan Severance in her role on the TV Show 'Wiseguy'. She thought that this movie wasted her talents! I informed her that Joan had gone on to do a sequel as Roger Corman has boasted that none of his movies had ever lost money so someone must have liked the first movie!!

Tina said that was because none of the actors could act in this movie and that Roger saved a lot of money by hiring these actors! I would tend to agree with that statement!

The movie does feature a sexy Joan Severance in the lead role of the Black Scorpion. The Black Scorpion is based on a comic book heroine. I have not read any of the Black Scorpion comics, and after this film.... well they won't be on the top of my list to find at the SDCC later this month!!

This film was advertised to be a Roger Corman erotic thriller. (The Movie is rated 'R'.)

It was not erotic, basically it was 'gratious sex scenes' and definitely not a thriller. There was no suspense at all.

Funny thing is, I could see scenes in this movie that looked so similar in the later film 'Catwoman' starring Halle Berry. Especially between Black Scorpion and her alter ego's boyfriend when Black Scorpion seduces the boyfriend. However Catwoman (Halle Berry) was much better at that!

Also the movie is stated to be about "a sexy undercover cop turns into a one-woman vigilante squad--Black Scorpion--following the murder of her father".

Well, Joan is sexy looking and the Black Scorpion costume accentuates her great looks, a little too much for Tina!

The fight scenes are not realistic, of course this is a mid 1990's film, and a Roger Corman film, so that can be understood.

I found the transformation of Darcy's (the alter ego of Black Scorpion) orange Corvette into the Scorpion-mobile to be cool, but Tina thought it was laughable. There were some other scenes in this movie that reminded Tina of the hoky-ness of the 1966 Batman TV series. However this movie was not made for laughs so it missed the mark with Tina!

One last point, that of the villain. His origin was OK, but the costume was so bad... it was so bad it reminded me how bad the Green Goblin's costume was in the Spider-Man I movie.

Due to the gratitous sex scenes, the poor plotline, and the unrealistic fight scenes we will not be viewing the sequel to this movie. Tina refuses!!
