We will be attending the San Diego Comic Con International (SDCC) in less than two weeks from now!  We are going over the posted program schedule for all four days to make our plans, but still taking in a movie a night to relax! This movie review now puts us up to 374 total reviews!

Currently we have 283 DVDs reviewed, plus 15 VHS, 7 Music CDs, and 69 books.

Yes, since our sales niche is "comic book, sci-fi and pop culture related", we do have a lot of comic book movies or books on comics reviewed.

BUT we also have reviews on 'chick flicks' and dramas as Tina tries to balance out the 'action movies' that we watch with other movies!  AND I personally enjoyed viewing the film 'Miss Potter' starring Renee Zellweger!

So just click on the links provided above to be taken to our reviews on DVDs, VHS, CDs and Books for what should be a pleasurable viewing, listening or reading night!

Thanks for taking the time to read this, and feel free to post your comment below or on the review itself that we posted!

Robert E Howard
As part of our eBay Blog Posts we are watching all the movies based on comic books or comic strips etc to see if they are entertaining or even watchable....

In addition we are watching other movies, such as this one, which are becoming part of 'pop culture'.  This love story was released in 1996 at the same time 'Titanic' was released and was lost in the 'Titanic's wake!  Even I missed this one!

The Movie Review:

Wow!

I thought I knew a lot about Robert E Howard, (REH), but this movie added another facet to his life.

The movie is about a Texas school teacher,(Renee Zellweger), who has been dabling with writing while teaching school.

Her old boyfriend introduces her to REH, and she is drawn romantically to him.
However REH is an idiosyncratic writer, (played by Vincent D'Onofrio), of pulp action / adventure / fantasy /horror tales. Actually he describes himself as the 'greatest pulp writer of all'.

However the romance that Novalyn, (the school teacher), wants with REH doesn't go anywere because of REH's Oedipal attachment to his convalescent mother.

Add to that problem that REH has some other emotional troubles, such as his attitude towards women, and that he doesn't want to be tied down.  Yet he is tied down to his mother, who he could afford to have a home nurse care for, due to all the money he makes writing pulp stories!!

This is definitely an offbeat romantic movie that was based on the memoir "One Who Walked Alone". The book was written by Novalyne Price at 76 years of age about her brief affair with "Conan the Barbarian" creator Robert E. Howard, (REH) in the early 1930's.

Tina wanted to watch this for the romantic aspect of the movie, not realizing who it was about. I was thrilled to see it was about REH, who besides creating Conan, also created Solomon Kane, Kull the Conqueror, and Red Sonja!!!

Recommended viewing for those that love REH's works, and you can 'sneak' this DVD in as a 'chick flick' to watch with your loved one besides!

LOL, Michael

Now That I Have All The Trekkies' Attention In Blogland:

We have several  more Star Trek Fan Club magazines listed along with our Star Trek Comics & Mags!

Star Trek has had several comic book series published through the years.

Marvel Comics, DC Comics, Malibu Comics, etc. have added greatly to the lore of the Star Trek Universe.

Of course there have been paperback and hardcover novels in printed form.

The Star Trek Club magazines are not that easy to find in SoCal where we are, probably because the TV Shows and the Films have several actors/actresses that are in demand for collectibles.

The issue to the top right is an example of that collectability.  Kim Cattrall starred in an early Star Trek Film, and went on to star in the TV series 'Sex and the City', thus making this magazine issue collectible for both Star Trek Fans PLUS Sex and the City fans.

Just click on the magazine cover on the top right to see what Star Trek media items we currently have in stock!

Hero At Large
As part of our eBay Blog Posts we are watching all the movies based on comic books, cartoons or comic strips etc to see if they are entertaining or even watchable....

The Movie Review:

This 1980 movie is about an out-of-work actor named Steve Nichols who is mistaken for the "Captain Avenger" character from a comic book movie that he was hired to promote at a theater showing!

The actor, (played by "Three's Company" star John Ritter), does a good deed at a neighboring grocery store while in costume.  When the selfless act is played up on a TV channel he decides to act out the role of the 'reel superhero' in real life!

Of course he is not a real superhero and in an act of stupid bravado gets shot in the arm during a drug bust chase in his second act as Captain Avenger.

He makes it back to his apartment but is locked out by his landlady. His neighbor next door, (played by Anne Archer who goes on to a great role of
Jack Ryan's wife in the Harrison Ford incarnation of Tom Clancy novel's 'Clear and Present Danger'), fixes him up and takes him in to her apartment.

From there the movie goes on about its' way in true late 1970's style. John shows off his manly hairy chest several times in the movie, (a la Three's Company), while Anne plays the 1970's woman who wants a career without a personal relationship with a man....

Kevin McCarthy plays his usual role of a semi-bad guy who puts winning above everything else.  Bert Convy plays his usual Bert Convy role.  Dr Joyce Brothers appears as herself on a talk show talking about superhero hijinks.

It's almost as if the storyline was written around the actors that played the roles... It's like a vehichle for the actors to play their typecast roles in acting!  Other than being a 'superhero' movie its very much like a long 1970's tv show!

Tina, my wife, could not watch this movie all the way through... She pulled out a book she had been reading and only caught certain scenes like this one: a very young Kevin Bacon has a bit part as a smartass kid at the movie theater where Steve (John Ritter) was posing as Captain Avenger.

Sorry to say the punchline of the movie 'Help Is On the Way' is not true. The real Captain Avenger should have saved this movie from itself!

Don't Have A Cow Man ! Only Two Weeks to Go !
Mood:  d'oh
Topic: Comic Book Movies

Only TWO More Weeks

With a Release Date of July 27th this movie will be all alone after the Big Blockbusters have already been released!

(You know the BBs, Spider-Man 3, Shrek 3, Pirates 3, Fantastic Four 2, Transformers....)

So should YOU be excited about the Simpsons Movie?

We've only been waiting for a big-screen version of 'The Simpsons' for six years or so... and the producers  have kept  saying 'Seventeen Years In the Making' in their promos!

The revealing teaser trailer with full frontal nudity of Bart had America talking about three weeks ago!

Must have been a slow news week for that much publicity on Bart skateboarding naked on a dare from Homer ???

The movie will be released while we are at the SDCC, (San Diego Comic Con International), so we'll have to check it out afterwards as the Con runs for four days and nights!

BUT If you aren't going to the Con, then check out the MOVIE and let us know how it was for YOU!

For those interested in 'funnybooks' like the Simpsons comics we have several of those comic books in our eBay Featured Comic Book Store  !
